‘Persona’ Producer Shares Why They Decided to Remake ‘Persona 3’

Persona 3 Reload sadly leaked a bit earlier than Atlus may have planned, but it’s definitely something many have been hoping to see for quite some time. The visuals are already teasing a promising return to the iconic franchise but many still are wondering why they decided to go with Persona 3. Well, the reasoning is quite simple actually: they see it as the turning point of the franchise that many have fallen in love with.

We believe Persona 3 was the game that marked the actual turning point in the Persona franchise, it’s a very important title for Atlus as well for the development team who were involved in the original version of the game.

    Ryota Niitsuma

A strong focus was on pushing people to learn more about the Persona series beyond just the rising popularity of the fifth entry. It seems though that they started working on the project around 2019. It’s crazy to think that they started production on the game just shortly before the pandemic hit, which makes you wonder if it may have been released earlier if things went as originally planned.

They also highlight that they remade everything from scratch from the original version of the game, but they have quite a few details they will reveal as we close in on the release. They do highlight that they updated the game to the level that players have gotten accustomed to with Persona 5, which does open many possibilities of modern elements making their way into the game.

  • ‘Persona 3’ Remake Will Not Include Portable or FES Content

‘Persona 3’ Remake Will Not Include Portable or FES Content

We’ve kind of expected it but luckily Persona 3 Reload producer Ryota Niitsuma and chief director Kazuhisa Wada did not let fans speculate for long if we’re going to see any additional content from previous Persona 3 editions included in the upcoming remake. In an interview with IGN, they confirmed that the game is a remake of the 2006 PlayStation 2 original.

So first I’d like to mention that since the basic concept of the Persona 3 remake was to remake the Persona 3, we don’t have the FES and Portable contents included. We wanted to really genuinely work on recreating the Persona 3 experience.

    Ryota Niitsuma

This might naturally annoy some as there’s the hunt for the “definite” edition of the iconic entry. FES is no longer accessible for those that don’t already won’t the game for PlayStation 2 and Portable doesn’t include that content. Plus, the female main character (FeMC as fans call her) was a great addition that brought along new social links and a new twist on the familiar story.

So we can’t really go into the details at this point yet, but we have remade basically everything from scratch as for Persona 3 the original version,” Niitsuma said. “So we have newly recorded voices, we have new scenes and events. We also have both new and arranged music. We’ll be kind of releasing that information, following everything. So please look forward to that
    Ryota Niitsuma

Their goal was to bring the original game to the modern era and preserve what made it stand out, while still taking the big learnings they had from Persona 5‘s experience. The franchise has changed quite a bit and while there is some skepticism on taking on these P5-esque elements, it does make sense they want to make sure of them to expand upon what made the original stand out.

So the basic concept of recreating the Persona story was that we wanted to keep everything from the original version, but update everything to the modern day. So at the same level of Persona 5, basically. So we have the newest graphics, we have updated the system to the newest usability… We have the voice lines in [both Japanese and English.] We also have the text available in 13 languages. So you should be able to have similar experiences to that of Persona 5.

    Kazuhisa Wada

Many are speculating that we might either see a new version that includes the missing content or we might even just have it as DLC. It’s surprising they didn’t just create two versions of the game similar to the Pokémon franchise but that might be for the best considering that those elements haven’t aged great for those wanting a fuller experience from a game. We’ll have to see if FES‘ story The Answer or even the FeMC might appear at a later point in this game.

  • New Details and Voice Cast Revealed for ‘Persona 3 Reload’

New Details and Voice Cast Revealed for ‘Persona 3 Reload’

Ahead of the Xbox Game Showcase, Atlus West accidentally leaked the trailer early for Persona 3 Reload; a remake of the iconic game that started the day system the franchise became famous for. Now that the trailer is officially released, we finally have some insights into what exactly we can expect from the new take on the iconic game that started Persona’s growth into the franchise it is today.

The one complaint some had was that Junpei Iori’s design in the footage shown was a bit off. And interestingly enough, the new website, P3RE.jp (which was part of why we knew the remake was coming eventually) gave us some brand new character portraits highlighting the updated designs that pay a bit more tribute to the original designs.

It also looks like they are, indeed, going to have a new dub for the entire game. Some of the voice acting hasn’t aged too well when replaying Persona 3 Portable’s remaster and it wasn’t too surprising they’d go down this route but it’s definitely great to get a confirmation that they will add a new voice cast. It’s uncertain if some will return but it seems the one’s confirmed so far are:

    • Dawn M. Bennett as Aigis
    • Allegra Clark as Mitsuru Kirijo
    • Alejandro Saab as Akihiko Sanada
    • Zeno Robinson as Junpei Iori
    • Suzie Yeung as Fuuka Yamagishi
    • Justine Lee as Ken Amada
    • Justice Slocum as Shinjiro Aragaki
    • Heather Gonzalez as Yukari Takeba
    • Aleks Le as the Protagonist

That isn’t all, as a few screenshots from the game have also been released that offers a first look at some more gameplay with you interacting with some of the cast members. While the menu and everything remains pretty much the same (keep in mind this is very likely still an early version of the build that is being shown off and quite a few elements can change throughout the production) it does confirm that we are getting an animated opening and sequences. So, it won’t all just be in-game animations for this adaptation.

The game looks quite promising and we’ll hopefully get a good look at more in the coming months. While the primary focus will very likely be on Persona 5 Tactica ahead of its release, they may still share a new trailer that confirms the already leaked multi-console release of the game. There’s already a second trailer that does seem to show some slight changes from the initial showcase so we’ll see what else they might share.

  • Spanish Retailer Leaks ‘Persona 3 Reload’s Multi-Platform Release

Spanish Retailer Leaks ‘Persona 3 Reload’s Multi-Platform Release

Well, if the trailer didn’t leak in advance, it seems Spanish retailer Xtralife was going to do it for Atlus. A new listing has surfaced online and it confirms that while Persona 3 Reload was an Xbox Showcase exclusive, the game is going to be a multi-platform release. The retailer includes the games on multiple consoles which also includes a Switch release; which is not too surprising given Persona 5 Royal was recently made available on the console.

It also matches Atlus seeing the potential of multi-platform releases to truly bank on the success of their franchise. Though, rumors did point to Persona 6, the next actual mainline entry, potentially being an exclusive for PlayStation 5 for some time. That would make sense given that Persona 5 was a huge hit when it was first released and it would also allow the game’s core audience to stick with it while others get a chance to catch up on the remake of Persona 3.

What is interesting is that the box art is also included, which seems pretty much set in stone alongside the Reload logo. Though it does say “Not Final Artwork” and could change given its Early 2024 release. While personally wished they’d updated the logo, the visual of the game’s main character in water is seemingly going to be a recurring theme moving forward for the entry. Here’s hoping that they may have also added some elements into the actual remake that make this aspect come across outside of just the UI.

  • BREAKING: Atlus West Accidentally Leaks ‘Persona 3 Reload’ Trailer Early, Early 2024 Release

BREAKING: Atlus West Accidentally Leaks ‘Persona 3 Reload’ Trailer Early, Early 2024 Release

Well, it seems like Persona 3 Reload is real, as the trailer for the remake of the iconic game has seemingly leaked early. As shared by Twitter user @Spoopy06, the full trailer has seemingly found its way online and was initially shared by Atlus West’s Instagram account. The trailer showcases many familiar sequences but also has a variety of style updates that definitely is more in line with what we see with Persona 5.

Not just that, it starts with the Xbox logo and ends with “Play it Day 1 With Gamepass” further hinting that this trailer was part of the upcoming Xbox Showcase. So, either they accidentally leaked it with the wrong event or the timing was off. Either way, the trailer confirms that it’s an adaptation of the base game, as there’s no sign of the female route being present in this version of the game. @ScrambledFaz has shared a better look at the adaptation.

There’s no sign of it including a release on all consoles or PlayStation, but it does seem unlikely that this classic will only be available on one console. So, here’s hoping that the game will also be confirmed for other releases, as we saw a similar strategy with the remaster reveals earlier this year. It was commonly the website that revealed the multi-title release. The only big surprise is that this game is seemingly releasing in early 2024 rather than the rumored later this year. Perhaps that Persona 5 spinoff game, which was also hinted at potentially being revealed soon. Could we have a double-reveal planned for Xbox Showcase?

  • New Domain Update Further Hints at ‘Persona 3’ Remake Reveal as Rumor Hints at New Name

New Domain Update Further Hints at ‘Persona 3’ Remake Reveal as Rumor Hints at New Name

With Summer Game Fest just a few more hours away, the rumor mill is starting to go crazy once again. Surprisingly, after many years of holding back on their Persona franchise; especially with its 25th anniversary; it seems like we’re going to have many reveals building up across the rest of 2023. Just recently, we seemingly got a first hint that the rumored Persona 5 spinoff might be revealed soon with an Atlus-owned site titled P5T.jp getting updated.

Now, it seems like the same has happened with P3RE.jp, which we recently reported is very likely the site used by Atlus for the long-rumored Persona 3 remake. As mentioned, the site now links to a 404 which means that it is technically “live” but being worked on for publication. So, it seems the rumors of an announcement during the Xbox Showcase on Sunday might turn out to be true after all.

That isn’t all, Persona Central has retweeted an account that shared some supposed details on what we can expect from this remake of Persona 3. While we have to take it with a grain of salt, it seems the project might potentially be titled Persona 3 Reload, which still fits the P3RE.jp titling. They also hint that it’ll likely hit multiple consoles by November of this year.

They do highlight it’s a “full remake” but add it won’t be a “definitive” version. It might mean that we’re only getting the base game updated to the modern age rather than the Portable or FES versions. Reload is fitting instead of just going with the word remake, as it also matches with the Evokers which are a core element of the entry. With only a few more days to go, here’s hoping the confirmation is around the corner.

  • RUMOR: ‘Persona 3 Remake’ May Finally be Unveiled in Next Month’s Xbox Showcase

RUMOR: ‘Persona 3 Remake’ May Finally be Unveiled in Next Month’s Xbox Showcase

It looks like the upcoming PlayStation Showcase won’t have anything for Atlus fans if a new rumor is anything to go by. When it was finally announced that PlayStation is back to showcase its future line-up, there was some hope (personally) that we’d finally get a good look at what the future of the Persona series looks like. After the sixth installment was a no-show during its 25th anniversary, it seemed like the perfect time to share it. Yet, it seems a new rumor is hinting at a different direction for Atlus’ reveal.

Oddly enough, Resetera has become the main source for any future sight on what Persona fans can expect from the franchise, as not even Atlus has been willing to drop any real hints. Im A Hero Too, who previously shared that the Persona 3 Remake exists long before the first hint of it leaked online, has seemingly shared that we should expect a showcase of the game on June 11th, which is when the Xbox Showcase will take place.

The “It’ll be Evoke-itive” is the big reveal that it’s P3 related. Of course, this isn’t a confirmation that we’ll definitely see something and they might still have a tease of some kind in the upcoming PlayStation Showcase. This move also would highlight Atlus’ strategy of going beyond its PlayStation roots, and it doesn’t mean that Persona 6, which is also seemingly in development for some kind, wouldn’t also be a PlayStation exclusive.

It would be quite the double-hit with a first tease for the sixth installment as part of PlayStation’s showcase with a limited exclusive release similar to Final Fantasy VII Remake. In the meantime, they can keep fans happy on other consoles with a remake of Persona 3, which had the smallest amount of effort put into its remaster earlier this year. For now, it gives us at least a potential timeline on when we might expect something from this franchise for now.

  • New Report Claims ATLUS Has Worked on the ‘Persona 3’ Remake for “Several Years”

New Report Claims ATLUS Has Worked on the ‘Persona 3’ Remake for “Several Years”

The story surrounding Persona 3 has been quite an exciting one. Earlier this year, it kicked off with some random Reseterra rumor hinting at a remake of the iconic game. The irony was that ATLUS was just releasing a remaster of the PlayStation Portable version, Persona 3 Portable. Yet, given that it is a very basic version of the original, it made sense they’d want to modernize the game that kicked off the current version of the franchise.

Just yesterday, we had two more hints at its existence. First off, supposed footage of a remake has found its way online from a potential earlier build back in 2021 that was used for an internal presentation. Not just that, but someone else noticed that a new website similar to P5R.jp and P5S.jp had been uncovered titled P3RE.jp. So, more and more hints were gathering about the existence of this game.

Surprisingly, the news outlet Gematsu has also covered the recent leaks but went one step further. In a second tweet following the report that they “understand” the long-rumored Persona 3 remake has “been in development at ATLUS for several years.”

While we cannot verify the footage itself, Gematsu understands that a Persona 3 remake has been in development at ATLUS for several years.

While ATLUS still hasn’t given an official statement, it does seem more and more realistic that this remake is in development. Most rumors pointed to the project potentially releasing at some point this year, which definitely would be a nice way to get our Persona fix while we wait for any announcement for Persona 6. Here’s hoping there’s no additional delay for the future entry of the franchise due to the development time on this remake.

  • New Domain Registration Further Hints at ‘Persona 3’ Remake

New Domain Registration Further Hints at ‘Persona 3’ Remake

Looks like news and hints are piling on as of late. Earlier this year, we got our first rumor hinting at a future Persona 3 remake. It wasn’t too surprising if it had any validity given the project was voted as the top choice to get reworked by fans and there has been some concern over Atlus remastering the PlayStation Portable variant rather than tweaking the original Persona 3 FES release.

Earlier today, some supposed footage had leaked from a 2021 internal meeting at Atlus. While only a rumor at the time, the footage included one of Persona 3‘s main characters in a new model alongside never-before-seen Sonic Frontiers footage including an enemy that was only featured in concept art but not in the final release. It doesn’t confirm it and is just a rumor but it still is a curious leak.

Now, it seems another hint may have surfaced, as Twitter user @MbKKssTBhz5 has shared a new domain that has been registered in Japan. The title P3RE.JP doesn’t really give away what it is for but would match the naming that Atlus has given its other entries. The microsite for Persona 5 Royal is titled P5R.JP and would match this overall naming. Other titles haven’t received their own site to give a better comparison.

    https://twitter.com/MbKKssTBhz5/status/1645169046290149379

It seems like the naming was set earlier this month in 2023, which could hint that they are preparing the site for an upcoming announcement. It’s not uncommon that these kinds of site registrations are renewed or done ahead of announcements, but with P3 and a “RE” hinting at Remake, perhaps there’s more to this rumor than we thought at first. It’s definitely something to keep a close eye on.

  • RUMOR: Possible Leaked Footage Offers First Look at Long-Rumored ‘Persona 3’ Remake

RUMOR: Possible Leaked Footage Offers First Look at Long-Rumored ‘Persona 3’ Remake

A Persona 3 remake has always been something fans of the Atlus franchise joked around about. Not only because technically there are three other Persona entries that have yet to receive much love since the PSP era but also due to the many rumors that have lit a little spark of hope throughout the years. Still, the concept of an actual remake with Persona 5‘s engine has picked up quite a bit of steam as of late with a new rumor sparking the conversation earlier this year and we may have even gotten our first look at the project.

While not officially confirmed, user @AVtoGAMEnoYAMI has taken to Twitter and shared some footage of Yukari Takeba shooting her arrows at a shadow. Out of context, it looked like an impressive fan-made concept, especially as we don’t see her using an Evoker (the gun they point at themselves) and she also is seemingly using a bow from a Persona than something that was provided in the game. Plus, you don’t see the SEES armband either or any hint at the group.

    https://twitter.com/AVtoGAMEnoYAMI/status/1644990912328798208

Yet, the animation looks well done, the background is definitely Tartarus, and with the many rumors, it just feels like a curious timing to leak. What adds weight to it potentially being real is the fact that an additional showcase included the long-rumored Jet Set Radio sequel and most notably Beta footage of Sonic Frontier with a boss that was only confirmed to exist in concept art and never made it into the final game.

Supposedly this is footage that was shared initially 2021 during an internal meeting held in 2021, which would match with one of the earliest hints that Atlus might be working on trying to bring many of its iconic IPs back with remasters or remakes as first hints were given in 2020 of this new development (still waiting for Tales of Arcadia).

There’s a chance that what we’re seeing above was just a pitch visual using some minimal visuals to showcase the idea of remastering the game or an early test build that didn’t include all details. Of course, it also still remains a mystery and hasn’t been given a DMCA by Sega since it leaked online which means it might not be true (though they also may not want to raise any flags by doing so either).

For now, it’s just a rumor and if it turns out to be fan-made, it is extremely well done. Sadly the recent live stream that was hinted at in March was mostly about the Blu-ray release and an additional artbook from the stageplay inspired by the Persona series. So, who knows just how long we’ll have to wait for an actual game announcement but rumors pointed to Persona 3‘s remake hitting this year. So, all eyes will be on Summer Game Fest and whatever PlayStation stream is heading our way as some others believe reveals are “a ways off.”
