  • The DCEU Can Shine Even Without Superman and Batman

The DCEU Can Shine Even Without Superman and Batman

Quite recently the internet has been ablaze with rumors and reports regarding the future of the DC Extended Universe. They have stated that Batman and Superman would essentially have no role in the DCEU moving forward. Michael Keaton might take on a role similar to Nick Fury in the early days of the MCU. Their original roles will be taken over by Batgirl and Supergirl of the trinity. While it seems like there’s a bit of uncertainty on what’s to become of the DCEU, I don’t think all is lost. In fact, I feel like there’s even more potential now than there was ever before.

Obviously, Batman and Superman are essential characters to the comics mythos. They are the literal pillars of the DC Universe across all mediums, and rightfully so. Luckily the characters will live on in multiple other projects like Matt ReevesThe Batman, Batman: The Caped Crusader, My Adventures With Superman, Superman and Lois, as well as whatever DC has planned. The two aren’t completely gone from DC’s cinematic future. As such, they can continue to exist in their own separate projects while minor characters get a chance to shine in a connected DCEU.

That is exactly why we shouldn’t look at this as the end but rather as an opportunity. In this instance, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has proven how a franchise can build itself without some of its most iconic characters. Yes, there have been comparisons when people pointed out that the DCEU went a little too fast so that they could catch up with the MCU, but in this case, they should take a page out of their book. With this new direction, they may be unshackled like Marvel Studios once was.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe was able to build without its pillar characters, as back in 2008 they only had limited access to their roster of characters. As such, the MCU was forced to start without the likes of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and even the X-Men. They couldn’t access these characters that put them on the map. Instead, they worked with what was available at their disposal and built a universe with the likes of Iron Man, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Vision, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and many more. While it seems difficult to imagine a world without them, they weren’t well-known at that time.

The DCEU has a chance to dig through its incredibly rich roster of characters and give the spotlight to those that would’ve otherwise never gotten the chance. Marvel is at a place now where they can introduce characters like the Eternals, Echo, Shang-Chi, and many more to their universe and instantly turn them into household names. Even Moon Knight just recently had more views within the first 24 hours than series like Hawkeye, WandaVision, and even Loki. These are all characters that became fan-favorites after being part of the franchise for years, and this new character managed to outperform them.

So, even if the future for Batman and Superman in the DCEU is uncertain, this isn’t something to fear but rather embrace. These two characters have such a strong place in the cinematic consciousness of the public. They aren’t dependent on the rest, especially with Reeves‘ plans of building an entire universe based solely on Batman. So, the DCEU can reestablish itself and become even more interconnected as minor characters get their time to shine. We’re already seeing the new direction with projects on Black Adam, Blue Beetle, and more. This is just the beginning of a brighter future.

  • RUMOR: Supergirl and Batgirl May Become Part of the DCEU’s New Trinity

RUMOR: Supergirl and Batgirl May Become Part of the DCEU’s New Trinity

Two of the biggest mysteries in the past few years have been the future of Batman and Superman in the DC Extended Universe. The characters are pillars of the comics alongside Wonder Woman and, most frequently, Harley Quinn, but their future live-action appearances within the DCEU seem to be ending a bit sooner than many had hoped.

Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck were reportedly set to leave their roles a few years ago, but since then things have gotten a bit foggy. MyTimeToShine, who has been on a DC hot streak as of late, is now reporting that both characters will effectively be wiped from canon in the DCEU. Yet, the big development lies in the fact that they already have characters ready to take over their original roles in the new canon.

Supergirl and Batgirl are set to make their DCEU debut this year with Sasha Calle aiding Barry in The Flash. Leslie Grace’s Batgirl will presumably take place in the post-Flash universe, with Michael Keaton set to play Batman in the film. Calle and Grace will reportedly take over as the main universe “Super” and “Bat” representatives, as the DCEU heads in an interesting new direction with its characters.

This news will surely confuse and upset many fans, but it’s best to keep an open mind as these are still purely rumors and we haven’t seen a finished project just yet. If these rumors are indeed true, it would mean Calle and Grace would join Gal Gadot in the new DCEU trinity. Along with being a member of the trinity, it seems likely that Leslie Grace could also join the Justice League, which is rumored to get a revival in The Flash. Whatever happens, we have a lot to look forward to.

  • ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ Writers Join Michael B. Jordan’s ‘Val Zod’ Superman Project for HBO Max

‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ Writers Join Michael B. Jordan’s ‘Val Zod’ Superman Project for HBO Max

It looks like Michael B. Jordan‘s adaptation of Val Zod, a Superman of another Earth, is moving forward. Deadline has just reported that writers Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters were hired to tackle the HBO Max’s adaptations script. It’s still unclear if Jordan will also take on the role of Val Zod, which still remains uncast. He is only set to act as an executive producer alongside Outlier Society’s Elizabeth Raposo.

While we still wait for a sign of life if Henry Cavill‘s time as Superman has a future within the DCEU, it’s great to see DC and Warner Bros. continued efforts to expand their slate by exploring the many different aspects of the multiverse. Val Zod explores the story of a different Kryptonian who lands on Earth, but this time Earth-2. He eventually went on to face off against Superman, who was brainwashed at the time.

Metayer and Peters are hot off the heels of their work on the new Transformers film, Rise of the Beasts. So, it’s a great get for Warner Bros. and the HBO Max project. As such, they’ve worked with Steven Caple Jr. who directed Creed II, one of Michael B. Jordan‘s many leading roles. There’s a good chance that their work together might’ve landed them this current gig.

  • Set Photo Offers First Look at Ezra Millers ‘The Flash’ Suit

Set Photo Offers First Look at Ezra Millers ‘The Flash’ Suit

Production on the upcoming Flash film has been quite busy recently. They took to the streets of Glasgow for a high-speed chase between Ben Affleck’s Batman and a mystery Humvee. While there seems to be no sign of the Flash anywhere that doesn’t mean he isn’t around. A photo leaked from the set of the DC film looks to have given us our very first look at the scarlet speedster in his new outfit, a much smoother and vibrant red suit featuring the classic gold accents and of course, the wings.

A new set photo from Twitter user crypt0dad looks to have given us the first look at a suit that looks to be quite the vast departure from Barry’s first suit, which was seen in both cuts of Justice League. What was once a armored suit made from rocket metal and held together with wires looks to have been turned into a much more streamlined look and features golden boots. Of course he has the classic wings on his helmet. Surrounded by quite the green screen, context on the scene remains absent. The tweet in question includes some might interesting details on who may be with Barry.

The user explains that while he was working on the film with the titular hero, he wasn’t the only one. The user mentions that Batman and Superman were on set with him at the same time. However it remains unclear which Batman it was whether it be Keaton or Affleck. The “Superman” could’ve been Sasha Calle‘s Supergirl, but would be odd to not call her by her name. While we’ve yet to see a full official look at Barry’s new out, this should give you a much better idea of what to expect, since it isn’t the best photo.

  • ‘Superman and Lois’: How Clark Kent Puts The Man In Man of Steel

‘Superman and Lois’: How Clark Kent Puts The Man In Man of Steel

In many iterations of Superman, there have been stories that have shaped how he deals with complicated choices. Specifically, when it comes to remaining in control. In stories involving Red Kryptonite, we’ve seen the impact of those scenarios. Even Injusticewhere the Joker influences him to kill Lois Lane is as far as the scope goes. In Superman & Lois‘ latest episode Clark has to deal with his own lack of control that is capable of destroying the world.

Superman & Lois Easter Eggs are a Love Letter to Every Era of DC History - Den of Geek

Regular human beings who have great wealth and power aren’t inclined to have control. They’re known to indulge and revel in the fruits of their labor. Superman has all the power someone can only dream of owning. Yet, he’s human enough to control it for the greater good, which isn’t easy. While he was under the influence of his brother Tal-Rho, there was a moment for Clark where it felt good to let go.

I’m not saying I want this to be true. I wish it wasn’t, but it felt good. It felt really, really good. That feeling worries me.

As Clark pleads with Lois that the kryptonite weapons should not be buried, this is the humanity that exists within the Kryptonian. Part of heroism is sacrifice, but an even bigger part is self-awareness. It’s easy to think that someone like Superman is infallible, and Lois Lane’s belief in her husband is admirable. In a way, it’s easy to get caught up in the praise and adulation that’s given to the Man of Tomorrow.

Yet, the greater power that Clark exhibits here, is one of understanding his own journey. Jonathan Kent taught Clark about controlling his gifts, knowing that one mistake could come at an unimaginable cost. Clark has lived with this for years upon years, yet with all of those lessons, there is no hubris.Eventually, Superman trusted John Henry Irons to hold onto the Kryptonite weapons after learning of his fate. In a parallel world, Superman was corrupted. He and other Kryptonians took over the world, including the horrifying act that led to the Man of Tomorrow killing Lois.

John showed up in this current world, wanting to make sure that the same thing wouldn’t happen again. Eventually, he was convinced that this Superman was different. It’s a credit to Clark for ignoring the praise and belief around him and doing the right thing. There is always a chance that someone or something could take control. In his vulnerability, Clark decided that a Superman could not. He put his trust into humanity, and it has made him the hero that he’s always been.

  • New ‘The Flash’ Set Photos Offer First Full Look at Sasha Calle’s Supergirl

New ‘The Flash’ Set Photos Offer First Full Look at Sasha Calle’s Supergirl

It seems we finally got a closer look at Supergirl’s new costume for the upcoming The Flash film. Twitter user @GothamAdam shared a high-res image that offers a full look at Sasha Calle as the classic heroine. We got a brief glimpse at her chest plate from director Andy Muschietti recently, but now we get a closer look at the costume in its entirety. The current version does not seem to include a cape and it is uncertain if it’ll get added in post, or they perhaps will have brief sequences of her without one. It was only a matter of time before they find their way online, as we already got glimpses of her from yesterday’s leaked set photos. either way, the costume seems strongly connected to Henry Cavill‘s design from Man of Steel, which continues to hint at her existence in the main timeline of the DCEU.

Twitter user @bigscreenleaks shared more photos of the actress offering an even better look at the costume:

The costume looks great and the emphasis on the red makes it stand out quite a bit. As John Sabato pointed out in his piece covering yesterday’s coverage, it seems they are going with a design that is strongly inspired by Lara-Lane Kent’s look from Injustice. It’s uncertain if she might actually be the daughter of Clark Kent in this universe or if they simply wanted to make her stand out from the blue-dominated look that the DCEU’s Superman wears. Either way, it’s a great look and we can’t wait to see Calle in action.

  • Latest ‘The Flash’ Set Photos Tease Supergirls DCEU Origin

Latest ‘The Flash’ Set Photos Tease Supergirls DCEU Origin

With quite a few films in production, the DCEU is finally preparing its next wave of films. But even with a stable slate, the current state of the DCEU is still quite a bit of a mess. For a while now, fans have wondered what the future will hold for Superman or Batman in the mainline universe. The only answers we’ve received from WB are reboots of the popular characters separate from the other films. Many fans hope to see the upcoming Flash film set the record straight and give us some definitive answers on the future of this universe. It seems some set photos may have given us exactly that.

With The Flash currently filming in London, we were bound to get a few looks at the set via some passerby fans. One of the first things we saw from the set was a look at Sasha Calle in her Supergirl suit, being held up by wires as she made a classic superhero landing. The suit in question, which we got a brief look at previously, seems to be inspired by Lara-Lane Kent’s look in the Injustice storyline. The only difference is this one is sporting the DCEU Superman crest.

In addition, some more set photos confirm that she is indeed in Central City and what appears to be a one that is set in the mainline DCEU. On the street, a bus can be seen with Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman placed next to an advertisement for the Central City Children’s fund.

While plot details for The Flash are still very much under wraps, it seems that these set photos could hint at Calle’s Supergirl indeed being from the main universe and possibly filling in for Superman in his absence similar to Batman in Birds of Prey. Hopefully, The Flash will offer some sort of explanation for the absence of these iconic heroes and set the DCEU on a definitive path with a stable Justice League roster.

  • Animated ‘Injustice’ Film In Development

    Animated ‘Injustice’ Film In Development

Many fans always wondered what would happen if the DC Universe got turned upside down. What would happen if Superman embraced a darker side? The various Crisis events in the DC universe did tease this potential, but it wasn’t until NetherRealm Studio that went all-in with their Injustice franchise. The fighting games pitted villains and heroes alike to see who would be the last one standing. Its story was a standout when the first entry, Injustice: Gods Among Us, released in 2013. Now, WB Home Entertainment announced they are developing an animated film based on the Injustice franchise. We didn’t receive any details on the project, but we can expect an advanced sneak peek available in the upcoming release of the Batman: The Long Halloween Part II animated film.

With the film getting announced out of nowhere, there’s little to no information on the project. Warner Bros has not announced any plot details or casting as of now. The film could be an animated retelling or be part of their new choose-your-own-adventure animated films. WB Animation released an animated retelling of Under The Red Hood that gave the viewer a choice on how the events unfolded

The games did something similar. In the ending of Injustice 2, you were given a choice that resulted in one of two endings. One resulted in Superman getting banished to the Phantom Zone while the other saw him combine with Brainiac. As a consequence, he built an army to protect Earth and continue his rule overall. The games had an amazing roster to play with and we can expect a lot of familiar faces in the upcoming film. Here’s hoping the sneak peek offers more details on what to expect.

  • ‘THE BOYS’ Jack Quaid to Star in New Animated Superman Series for HBO Max

‘THE BOYS’ Jack Quaid to Star in New Animated Superman Series for HBO Max

Superman is coming back to the world of animation. HBO Max and Cartoon Network have ordered two seasons of My Adventures With Superman, a new series focusing on Clark Kent’s early days as the world’s original superhero. The title character will be voiced by Jack Quaid, best known for his work on Amazon’s The Boys, while Alice Lee will give life to Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane. The series will also feature Jimmy Olsen as part of Kent and Lane’s investigative journalist team, as the trio of twenty-somethings partner up to take on life together. Warner Bros. Animation President Sam Register elaborated on the series’ production:

This is the first animated Superman series in many years and we want to tell our Superman story through the trio of Clark, Lois, and Jimmy – whose relationship dynamic will allow for rich, serialized and engaging stories as we explore their lives as individuals and their journey together as friends.

The cartoon will function as Superman’s coming-of-age story, and will follow Clark as he builds his secret identity, falls in love with Lois, and embraces his role as the hero of Metropolis. Lois, portrayed as a growing star in her field, will share Clark’s adventures and help bring down the bad guys while taking aspiring photographer Jimmy Olsen under her wing. Warner Bros. Head of Kids & Family Programming Amy Freidman provided further explanation:

This fresh take from the Warner Bros. Animation team delivers a modern, relatable Clark Kent alongside a fearless, whip smart Lois Lane who are navigating the small tasks of both becoming adults and trying to save the world.

The series will be produced by animation veterans Jake WyattBrendan Clogher, and Josie Campbell. The trio’s collective work includes shows like Voltron: Legendary Defender, Teen Titans Go!, and Steven Universe.
