  • ‘Y: The Last Man’’s Turbulent Journey to FX

‘Y: The Last Man’’s Turbulent Journey to FX

After what seems like an eternity, the Y: The Last Man trailer finally got released. With a little over a month to go before its September 13th premiere on FX, it feels like a good time to go back and remember just how difficult it was bringing the Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra iconic comic series to the small screen. In 2015, the series was announced to enter development over at FX. Since, the show has not only gone through different showrunners, a different main cast, but also a different title. From just the initial Y, it has since moved back to the source material’s original title, Y: The Last Man.

Michael Green (Smallville, Heroes, American Gods) was once slated to serve as showrunner, and was co-writing the pilot with Brian K. Vaughan., After working on the show for four years, he left the production in 2019 following “creative differences” being replaced by Eliza Clark (Extant, Animal Kingdom). With principal photography for the pilot taking place in 2018, it’s perhaps fair to assume that, following the changes to the leadership behind the show, we’ll be getting little to no footage of that period to show up in the final product.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, filming got postponed to later 2020. It only concluded last month, July 2021. Around the time filming began, it was also announced that the show would feature an almost entirely different cast from the one initially announced in 2018. Barry Keoghan (Eternals), Diane LaneImogen Poots (28 Weeks Later), Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel), Juliana Canfield, Marin Ireland, Amber Tamblyn, and Timothy Hutton were all set to star in the show, but perhaps due to delays and the way the approach towards the show evolved, some ended up getting replaced. Ashley Romans and Olivia Thirlby (Dredd) stepped into the roles which initially belonged to Lynch and Poots. Ben Schnetzer replaced Keoghan as Yorick Brown, the series lead. Paul Gross also joined the show at a later stage as Hutton, another of the big names from the original cast list, left following a restructuring surrounding his role.

Getting the show off the ground was obviously an extremely turbulent affair, something that might probably end up hurting the series’ quality. But it’s rather poetic if a show that focuses on a global cataclysmic event, that got postponed due to a global pandemic, somehow found redemption to its lackluster development story in a series that does justice to the brilliant, Eisner Award-winning comic series it’s based upon.

As stated above, the show focuses on the aftermath of a cataclysmic event that ends up killing every single mammal on planet earth with a Y chromosome. In layman’s terms, only females survived. Enter Yorick Brown, who mysteriously manages to survive with no idea of how that came to be. Alongside Ampersand, his pet monkey, he becomes involved in a world of governmental espionage and international intrigue. All of this with the backdrop of humanity possibly being on the verge of extinction for simply not being able to reproduce. We’re led in a globetrotting adventure, across multiple continents as Yorick, the Last Man, fights not only for his own future but also for his race. It is set to premiere on September 13th, 2021, on FX.

  • ‘M.O.D.O.K.’: The Best Marvel TV Show Since ‘Daredevil’

‘M.O.D.O.K.’: The Best Marvel TV Show Since ‘Daredevil’

It’s easy to forget that the Marvel brand isn’t as monolithic as we want it to be. It’s an enterprise that’s asymmetrical as they can come, with gear and chains that function unevenly and whose inner metrics are widely disparate from each other. The Marvel films may be Hollywood’s biggest commercial success for several years in a row, but Marvel Comics still struggles to keep their books selling. The Avengers brand is beloved worldwide, but a video game starring these billion characters was received coldly by the gaming market last year. Despite being in the same lucrative sandbox, Marvel Television and Marvel Animation have somewhat struggled to consistently churn out quality stuff that rivaled the famous films. It’s not always smooth sailing for some of the Marvel folk living in the era of Marvel domination.

This brings us to MODOK, an upcoming show from the underdog divisions that truly stands out in a Marvel era dominated and dictated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show absolutely rules, which coming from someone who has spoken ill things about the output from Marvel Television multiple times on record, is saying something. Granted, a lot of the stuff that frustrated me with Marvel TV was rooted in their less-is-more/grounded approach to what should be imaginative genre storytelling. MODOK is absolutely untethered from all that nonsense. A boisterous explosion of everything that makes the Marvel Universe truly fun.

Marvel's MODOK Trailer and Release Date Revealed by Hulu - Paste

Despite growing up in the era where Adult Swim blew up, I never really got into its network programming. It might have been too eccentric for my normie teenage self at the time. So, Seth McFarlane’s work is what I leaned towards for my adult humor. Seeing a Marvel property go the way of Robot Chicken, a self-referential, parodying, manic, stop-motion bonanza is a totally novel thing for the normie in me and I dig it because it works so damn well with a character like MODOK. This wouldn’t work elsewhere with, say, a property like Squadron Supreme.

MODOK is one of the most absurd characters in the Marvel universe. That the character has had a staying power this long in the lore, while his equally wacky cohorts such as Paste Pot Pete or Big Wheel disappear into obscurity, is practically a miracle. In the comics, MODOK is this mad scientist who mutates himself into this big-headed glob of a being. He’s a primary figure in the evil scientific alliance AIM and has gone on to fight the likes of Hulk and the Avengers. So he’s a heavy-hitter as far as being a looming big bad in the Marvel Universe.

The show takes this premise and totally craps on it in the best way possible. It’s clear how Patton Oswald and Jordan Blum are aware of how ludicrous MODOK is given the lengths they go to just to crank it up to 11. The first episode sets up the idea that this floating head, who has a day job trying to destroy the planet and fighting Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, has a home life he needs to attend to nightly. He has a human wife and son, and a daughter who looks exactly like him for no good reason. On top of all that, they have the flamboyant Super Adaptoid living with them, who they treat as the Meg Griffin of the family. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

I cannot count the times I laughed hard at the stuff they explore in the episodes. There’s an episode about MODOK wanting to time travel to a Third Eye Blind concert to appease his wife. In another one, MODOK dumps his trash via a portal on Asgard. Hell, there is even an episode that showcases some of the most Z-list villains planning to steal Captain America’s shield. All those things, of course, cascade into the dumbest antics a supervillain can get themselves into

This kind of self-awareness is key to a premise like this. Playing it straight is absolutely the wrong way to go. This is actually a gripe I have with the Avengers game that treats MODOK with the utmost seriousness. As great as that final boss fight is, there’s just something drab about a poker-faced take on the character. The man is a maniacal head that floats on a toilet and has T-rex arms. I don’t wanna see what that would feel like in a plausible reality. I wanna see MODOK deal with the true threat of not being able to stand up when he falls on his round back like a turtle.

So if you’re precious and uppity about the sanctity of your comics, everything that makes MODOK great might be a dealbreaker for you. This show doesn’t hold back. It’ll poke fun at everything; from its own characters to the source material. But that doesn’t mean the show thinks comics stink. There’s a reverence to the way the show is irreverent towards the trove of inspiration it draws from. It truly feels like a love letter to comics and it stems from Oswalt and Blum’s adoration for it. Sure, it craps on so much of it but it’s really done in an endearing way that’s never mean-spirited about the material or the people who love it.

Marvel's MODOK Trailer Shows New Hulu Comedy | Marijuanapy The World News

Easily the most evident way of expressing their admiration for the source material is the buffet of character cameos they pull from their disposal. Seriously, this show is like Super Smash Bros. but for characters that were left behind in the bargain bin of Marvel’s canon. And that’s not a bad thing at all. If anything, it’s an incredible showcase of just how rich Marvel’s villain roster is. There are bonkers cameos from characters that you didn’t even know existed in the canon. The fact that MODOK actually puts these characters in the forefront for people to enjoy is something to commend. Where else will I see Master Pandemonium host his own talk show?

The show wonderfully offsets all the craziness with some surprisingly real human character arcs. Never did I expect to be moved by the marital problems of a floating head or a child coping through a divorce but here we are. It’s incredible how the show manages to hone in on a lot of understated character work while treating its world with little to no regard. There are moments of tenderness in the show that make the experience. Doesn’t matter if it is MODOK doing his best to make sure his son doesn’t end up on the loser’s side of life like he is, or when he wrestles between his family’s happiness and his conflicting sense of purpose.

Hulu Releases New Marvel's MODOK Clip | LaptrinhX / News

A lot of the character work is done justice by a murderer’s row of voice talent. Oswalt is pitch-perfect as MODOK that it almost seems criminal to cast someone else in a live-action iteration. There’s a moment in the season where the show hilariously and brilliantly alludes to this too. MODOK’s family is voiced fabulously. Melissa Fumero of Brooklyn Nine-Nine fame plays his daughter, who by virtue of his gene in her, is the queen bee of her high school. She is fantastic here and goes against the Amy Santiago-type by being a mean yet lovable heel for once.

Aimee Garcia is MODOK’s wife, Jodie, who’s somewhat of a Martha Stewart retail personality in the story. I’m in awe at the mileage they got from the character. She’s in many ways the center of the season. Garcia really gets to shine by being the heart of the story and sometimes, an antagonist to her husband. Ben Schwartz plays their son Lou, who reminds me of Steve Smith from American Dad. He’s that eccentric lovable nerd that can never follow in the evil footsteps of his supervillain dad. Schwartz emanates the spirit of Jean Ralphio playing Lou Tarleton and it’s a very welcome thing to hear.

There exists a through-line in MODOK in the form of two sinister subplots brewing within the shadows cast by the titular character’s charming stupidity. The subplots are mostly just okay. To me, it’s the weakest link of the entire season. It’s not flat-out terrible as it starts with a lot of intrigues and ties a lot of seemingly disparate plots together nicely. But as the season moves along, it gets buried in all the funnier elements of the series that by the time the subplots start falling into place, it almost feels too late. It certainly doesn’t help that the timing of when these subplots pay off in the season are sequenced oddly.  But who am I kidding? None of those weak links matter in a show that works as smoothly as MODOK. Like the megalomaniacal narcissist he is, the show revels in its strengths maniacally in the face of all its faults and is all the better for it. I’ve never had this much appreciation for a Marvel TV joint since Daredevil ended. The show is without a question, the best thing they’ve done since 2015.

  • ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Captain Raymond Holt is One of TV’s Best Characters

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Captain Raymond Holt is One of TV’s Best Characters

The tragic news has hit that Brooklyn Nine-Nine will sadly come to an end. Ironically, I am in the middle of binging the show, as it is one of my personal favorite shows. I am disappointed to find out that the show is coming to an end, but it did have an iconic run. There are still ten more episodes to come, so we get a chance to join Peralta, Santiago, Diaz, Jeffords, and so many more. As the title implies, I want to use this chance to talk bout one of my favorite TV characters ever, Captain Raymond Holt. The character is brought to life by Andre Braugher, whose promotion to Captain kickstarted the entire show’s premise. His journey throughout the show has made him, in my opinion, one of the best characters in television history.

Holt’s entire arc is about him growing from what seems to be a robotic and emotionless man to a heartfelt captain. As the seasons go on, he adapts to the crazy antics around him and even starts to join in on them. We get the first glance at his more loose side when he joins in on a Halloween heist. It started to become a seasonal tradition where the antics keep escalating with each one. In a way, the moment we realize how far Holt has come is in the episode “Monster in the Closet”, where he builds a beautiful Balloon Arch. After getting rejected, Stephanie Beatriz‘s Rosa Diaz praises his work, and he shouts full of glee: “Vindication!” Even as he joined in on the insanity, he remained a stoic and leading figure for the team.

What started as a joke character trait became the anchor of the show’s comedy and development. His robotic demeanor played off of the various members in the precinct perfectly so that each member of 99 developed a unique relationship with him. His constant lecturing of Peralta is an ongoing theme of their father-son relationship. There are some heartwarming moments between him and Rosa, as they continuously bond over their avoidance of emotions. We get to watch his guidance of Amy Santiago and Terry Jeffords to push them towards their future’s to becoming captains one day. It’s these personal interactions that define the show and its comedy. The actors embody these characters so well that it feels like a family.

Of course, there is also the aspect of the character that redefined representation in television. His relationship with Marc Evan Jackson‘s Kevin Cozner is probably one of the most adorable couples put to screen. Every episode featuring their banter is a delight. We get a fully realized relationship with ups and downs throughout each season. They bond over their love for plain stones and their challenges being from different worlds. The episode “The Bimbo” was a particular highlight to showcase their relationship and Holt’s development. It also kind of highlights in general what makes this character stand out. We see him change so much throughout the show, and it’s his relationships with everyone else that make him stand out even more. He embodies what Brooklyn Nine-Nine is all about and I wanted to pay tribute to one of my favorite new shows before it enters its final season.

  • ‘BROOKLYN NINE-NINE’ To End With Upcoming Eighth Season

‘BROOKLYN NINE-NINE’ To End With Upcoming Eighth Season

After an immensely successful run on two separate networks, fan-favorite cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine will end with its eighth season. The series focused on the daily antics of Brooklyn’s 99th precinct and featured a diverse cast led by SNL-alum Andy Samberg and Emmy Award winner Andre Braugher. After an initial five-season run on Fox, Nine-Nine found itself on the off-season chopping block. Luckily for the procedural, it had managed to garner a large fanbase.

As such, a sky-rocketing amount of views on streaming combined with a loud campaign on social media led to a revival at NBC. Two more seasons followed, with the upcoming 10-episodes getting delayed due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. It looks like that season will end the long-running comedy, which is still waiting to return to production. Samberg has gone on record to state that filming will be back on track “fairly soon”. Series creator, Dan Goor, had the following to say regarding the end of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

I’m so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve. When Mike Schur and I first pitched the pilot episode to Andy, he said, ‘I’m in, but I think the only way to tell this story is over exactly 153 episodes,’ which was crazy because that was exactly the number Mike and I had envisioned. […] Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honor the characters, the story and our viewers. I know some people will be disappointed it’s ending so soon, but honestly, I’m grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape.”

Nine-Nine often found itself at the center of popular culture, as it pushed boundaries when it came to both POC and LGBTQ+ representation on mainstream television. Despite this, there was intense debate online about whether or not the show should continue following last year’s cultural re-evaluation in the wake of BLM protests against police brutality. Star Terry Crews subsequently revealed that the series’ writers had trashed the scripts previously written for season 8, opting to create new stories that addressed the current social climate. It’s unknown if this played a role in ending Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It’s comforting to know that this time, the ending will be on its terms.

  • CW Moves Forward With ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Live-Action Series

CW Moves Forward With ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Live-Action Series

It looks like The CW has found its next hit franchise to adapt, as Variety has just revealed they ordered a pilot for a live-action adaptation of Powerpuff Girls. We first heard of its development around six months ago, where it was revealed that CW regular Greg Berlanti and his team from Berlanti Productions are developing a series around the famous Cartoon Network franchise. Their success in adapting Riverdale may have sparked an interest to explore the story of three crime-fighting sisters in their later years. It comes at the worst time, as the world needs them more than ever before. The series joins other orders, such as a remake of USA Network’s The 4400, DC’s Naomi, and an untitled religious dramedy.

It will be based on the characters from the original animated series, which ran for six seasons from 1998 until 2005 before getting a reboot in 2016. This live-action adaptation will be written by Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody. The series will follow the trio in their early twenties, as they resent their childhood for wasting it on crime-fighting. So far, the series has only gotten a pilot, which means that CW still has to sign off on the series before ordering it to series.

It will be interesting to see how they adapt this iconic franchise. There is a chance it might be part of the HBO Max deal, as the production budget might rival Superman & Lois given the wide range of superheroic abilities the trio wields. There is also the question if they will include iconic characters from the series like Mojo Jojo or HIM, who might also require some heavy effects work. For now, we can only wait and see how the pilot turns out and if CW is interested in giving this adaptation a shot. It also opens up the question of which other Cartoon Network shows might be up next for a live-action adapation.

  • ‘Alien’ Series In Development for FX

‘Alien’ Series In Development for FX

It has been announced that Alien will get its own series on FX. While we sadly could not see the first footage, it seems that they will be continuing the story alongside Ridley Scott. A part of the story will take place on earth, so we can expect the Xenomorph to finally make his appearance on our planet. It will be exclusive on FX, but that brand will fall under the STAR banner internationally. Noah Hawley of Legion and Fargo fame will be the series’ showrunner.

  • ‘COBRA KAI’’s Latest Trailer Confirms Tamlyn Tomita and Yuji Okumoto Return

‘COBRA KAI’’s Latest Trailer Confirms Tamlyn Tomita and Yuji Okumoto Return

The new trailer for season three of The Karate Kid spin-off Cobra Kai is has been released. The new footage confirms the Murphy’s Multiverse exclusive that both Tamlyn Tomita and Yuji Okumoto will be indeed returning to the franchise, portraying Kumiko and Chozen Toguchi, their characters from the 1986 sequel The Karate Kid Part II.

The third season of the former YouTube Red series is now set to bring back two of Daniel LaRusso’s love-interests from the movies with Elizabeth Shue is also set to be coming back as Ali Mills, who we first saw in 1984’s The Karate Kid. It will be interesting to see how they play into the overarching story, but the trailer is promising quite a lot of drama and action. The inclusion of many classic characters from the franchise does open up the possibility of others following suit. Makes you wonder if they will get Hillary Swank to return as Julie Pierce from The Next Karate Kid in a future season. I’d love a cameo from Jackie Chan, who played Mr. Han in the 2010 remake.

Netflix has already renewed it for a fourth season before the third even aired, so they have a lot of hopes for this series’ future. Cobra Kai season three is set to premiere this January on Netflix, but they have yet to reveal a final release date. Going by the latest trailer, it seems they will release it on New Years’, or at least shortly after. So, we’ll have a great new series to kickstart 2021, as we’ll once again see the return of Ralph Macchio and William Zabka in their iconic roles.

  • Ava DuVernay Adapting DC’s ‘Naomi’ as a CW Series

Ava DuVernay Adapting DC’s ‘Naomi’ as a CW Series

The Arrowverse has gone through quite the shakeup in the past year. Recently, we’ve seen reports almost weekly on shows getting canceled, such as Black Lightning, while brand new ones already being in development. One of those being Wonder Girl, based on Yara Flor. Well, now it seems the CW will be adding yet another DC comic book property to its roster with Ava DuVernay jumping into the world of DC yet again.

The report states that she will develop a live-action series based on the hero Naomi. She was born from two of the twenty-nine people who received god-like abilities after some form of radiation broke through her Earth’s shattered ozone layer. Naomi traveled to Earth-Prime to hide from Zumbado, one of the twenty-nine’s most sinister members. He sought to end the child so that he could prove his strength. The series is produced by DuVernary and her production company, Array. Former Arrow writer and executive producer Jill Blankenship will write the story.

The character of Naomi is pretty new, as she made her debut just last year in her very own solo title by the same name. She was created by comic book vet Brian Michael Bendis, who responsible for characters like Miles Morales, Jessica Jones, and Iron Heart. This property is not DuVernay‘s first venture into the DC Universe, as she is currently working on an adaption of DMZ, as well as co-writing a New Gods film alongside Tom King. She will also direct the blockbuster and has been very enthusiastic about tackling the iconic characters created by Jack Kirby. This show also seems to be one of the first DCTV Properties not to fall under Greg Berlanti, who’s pioneered the superhero television genre since the beginning of Arrow.

  • RUMOR: ‘House of Dragons’ Eyeing Matt Smith as Series Regular

RUMOR: ‘House of Dragons’ Eyeing Matt Smith as Series Regular

It looks like House of the Dragons is continuing its casting. The Game of Thrones spin-off will go back in time to an era when the Targaryen’s ruled alongside their dragons. Around four months ago, we covered Illuminerdi’s exclusive on the show’s lead, Prince Daemon Targaryen. There hasn’t been much news so far. We did get the casting of Paddy Considine, who is up for the role of King Viserys. Now, it looks like HBO may have found their Prince, as Illuminerdi is reporting they are eyeing Matt Smith for the titular role.

The character is the most experienced warrior of his time. He is easily bored, as he keeps moving from one distraction to another. All he wants the love and acceptance of his brother, the king. The most notable description is that he is the series “true rogue”. We can expect the character to straddle a thin line between good and vile. They haven’t yet offered the role to Smith, so there is a chance it might still end up being someone else. Warner Media is looking into multiple actions.

The dynamic will be quite interesting, as we will have an ambitious warrior trying to make his brother accept him, who may not be the man he believes he is. Considine‘s Viserys may be a good man, but that doesn’t make him a good king. It will be interesting to see how these two world views will end in conflict, as the story develops. We still don’t know how many Targaryen’s will be featured in the series, so we might see the cast expand only as we near its production start.

  • ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Adds Robert Englund and More

‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Adds Robert Englund and More

Strangers Things has become quite the household name since it premiered on Netflix in 2016. Over the past few seasons, the show has used many popular ’80s films as inspiration for its storyline. It follows the unfolding mystery of the upside-down and the things that bump within. The upcoming fourth season will even include nods to classic horror films, such as Alien and Maximum Overdrive. The pandemic has become the bane of many productions’ around the world, slowing and even completely halting them. Netflix’s tentpole franchise was no stranger to these delays, as it began filming earlier this year before being quickly shut down due to safety concerns. At least now, we are getting some major casting news for the series.

It’s being reported the show’s fourth season has just about rounded out its cast with some exciting editions that are sure to make horror fans and ’80s nostalgia junkies excited. Possibly the most exciting addition to this season is a horror icon, Robert Englund, most known for his portrayal of Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Englund will portray Victor Creel, who’s been locked up in a psychiatric hospital for some vicious murders that he committed in the 1950s. Joining Englund is Tom Wlaschia, most known for his role as Jaqen H’ghar on the HBO series Game of Thrones. Rounding out these exciting additions to the cast are Jamie Campbell Bower, Eduardo Franco, Joseph Quinn, Mason Dye, Nikolaj Djuricko, and Sherman Augustus.

Stranger Things‘ fourth season is currently in production and will change up what we are used to. The first trailer for the next installment teased that our favorite characters won’t all be together in Hawkins, Indiana. It is slated to air sometime next year.
