    ‘The Mandalorian’: First Disney+ Show to Join Nielsen’s Top 10 Streaming List

    It’s been a big year for streaming services. As most people were stuck at home, they used the time to catch up on the latest shows by Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and more. These services do not provide much insight into how their shows are doing, so we depend on external analysts to give us a feeling if our favorite show is popular or not. Well, according to Nielsen, it looks like Disney+ has finally been able to join the top ten, as The Mandalorian has taken the third spot right behind The Office and Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. It is the first time a Disney+ series was able to join the list.

    The show was watched for over 1 billion minutes, which will only increase from here. Keep in mind this only accounts for the week of October 26th. So, it only takes into account the first season and the second season’s premiere episode. As such, it only counts the first nine episodes of the series’ run. Its performance wasn’t so far off from The Office, which consists of 192 episodes in total. As such, it does not include episodes that include the appearance of fan-favorite characters or the hype it built around Thanksgiving weekend.

    The Queen’s Gambit was also a massive success for Netflix, as it has managed to garner 1,850M viewed minutes since it released at the end of October. The rest of the list mostly consists of shows that are available via Netflix, such as Schitt’s Creek, Holidate, Grey’s Anatomy, and many more. It’ll be interesting to see if WandaVision will also join the list once it released in January.

    RUMOR: Florence Pugh to Return as Yelena Belova in ‘Hawkeye’ Series

    So, here is an interesting surprise. We are only a few days away before Hawkeye finally starts filming. We are still waiting for an official word on who might be playing Kate Bishop with Hailee Steinfeld still the biggest contender for the role. The story would be strongly inspired by Matt Fraction‘s run on the character. It was still uncertain what other characters we could see make a return from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Well, it looks like one important character that has yet been introduced will appear in the series after making her film debut. According to The Direct, Florence Pugh will return as Yelena Belova at one point in the series.

    That is not all, as they also state that she will don a Ronin-inspired costume. Now, this is interesting for multiple reasons. We saw Clint Barton wear the iconic suit during Avengers: Endgame, as he killed various Yakuza, which was teased to haunt him in this series. We also had the rumors of Echo making an appearance, who had also donned the suit at one point in the comics. The mantle was worn by various characters but this is the first time that it is connected to Yelena. We believed that she would carry on the mantle of Black Widow once she makes her debut in the upcoming film, but it looks like her journey won’t be an easy one.

    There is also the question of how her story will lead to the Disney+ series. We got a short teaser of her on a desk during the Black Widow trailer, so maybe she gets mind controlled and ends up in a similar situation to the Winter Soldier. Yet, there is a time difference between the film and the Disney+ series that opens up so many questions. There is a chance that she has met with Clint during his time as Ronin, who may have passed not he mantle to her rather than Echo. It’ll be interesting to see how it all connects once the show finally airs. Now, we just need to find out who is playing Kate Bishop.

    Marvel Studios Teases Thanos’ Eternals Heritage

    It seemed like Thanos’ story might’ve ended with Avengers: Endgame. Yet, comic fans know that the Mad Titan has some interesting connections to another race of aliens. He was the son of two Eternals, A’lars and Sui-San. Yet, he was born with the Deviants gene, which is why Thanos had his purple complexion. It was uncertain if he would still hold that connection in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially now that Eternals will release next year. Well, The Direct had a chance to visit the interactive exhibit Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. where they showcase props and information on the franchise. It seems they added something on the infamous titan that may finally confirm his lineage.

    Thanos’ origin is said to be on Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, making him a Titanian in nature. It is rumored however that Thanos is the last of an ancient and highly sophisticated species known throughout the universe as ‘The Eternals’.

    I do believe that there is a reason they say it is “rumored” as some may still be on Earth. Sersi is a prime candidate who might have chosen to stay among humans. We don’t know if the Eternals lived on Titan at one point, so it’ll be interesting to see if that gets explored in the upcoming film. Thor seems to be the source of this information. It looks like the Asgardians are aware of the Eternals’ existence, which may also hint at a connection if you consider the Norse Gods’ long lives.

    Marvel Studios Pays Tribute to Chadwick Boseman with New ‘Black Panther’ Intro

    Today is a sad day, as it would’ve been Chadwick Boseman‘s 44th birthday. It was still a shock to many when a few months ago he had tragically passed away after complications in his fight with cancer. Our hearts still go out to his friends and family, as it can’t be an easy time in an already turbulent year. It was revealed that he kept his cancer from many in the industry, so it had caught many off-guard when it was officially announced. Now, Marvel Studios prepared a touching tribute to the Black Panther actor by replacing the intro of his iconic film with a brand new one that showcases his legacy within the franchise.

    Marvel Studios has done something similar when Stan Lee passed away. His appeared during the opening for Captain Marvel and was just as heartbreaking as this. Right now, our mind should not be focused on the sequel but rather the legacy that the actor is leaving behind. His last film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is scheduled to release on Netflix in mid-December. Here he plays the trumpeter Levee alongside Viola Davis‘ Ma Rainey. She previously played his mother in the James Brown biopic Get On Up, who probably summed up his legacy best in an interview with the Guardian back in October.

    Chadwick was an artist. That is just what he was … he loved it, he demanded it in every single way. For someone so young it was incredible to watch.

    Disney+ One Year Later: A Desire for Updates

    It is hard to believe that Disney’s streaming service has already been around for over a year. As I live in Europe, we had to wait a bit longer to get our hands on it, but overall, I’ve been enjoying my experience with it. The service is still in its early phases of development. So, it would be unfair to compare it with Amazon Prime or Netflix directly. There are still some aspects I have been thinking about lately that would improve the overall experience, as well as add something unique to Disney+. We already heard the news of it being potentially expanded with R-rated content shortly, so I will not be tackling that here. Here are just some general issues I’ve had and hope to see adapted or added in the future.

     

    Time for a UI-Redesign

    I think the overall user interface is rather bland. It has all the main staples, such as a massive banner on the latest updates and different sections based on your interaction with the app. Of course, one of the earliest selling points were the unique banners highlighting the various major brands ranging from National Geographic, Star Wars to Marvel. Now, it is a great idea in concept, as it allows you to find the type of content you are looking for. Yet, it’s the only thing that stands out for the entire interface. It’s an odd juxtaposition between the vibrant blue of the Disney+ logo and the strangely dark and grey background of the app. I am generally a fan of flatter designs that could add some unique flourishes. Actually, why not just offer different design options to highlight one’s favorite brand. Marvel fans can highlight the films and shows like comic covers. Did you grow up with the Disney channel? Why not offer a design that pays tribute to that?

     

     

    Overall, I think as the subscriber numbers rise, it is time for a redesign. It was smart to make a basic design that people are familiar with so that they can easily find their way around the app. Now, Disney+ needs to stand out among the rest. They can keep the channel concept that was popularized by Netflix and Amazon but try to make it their own. They could make the shows stand out in a unique matter with short animations. Everything is tiny on my television. They have weekly release schedules for their Originals, but no information to showcase that directly in the app. Unlike Netflix, why not showcase upcoming releases so users can bookmark them on the front page. While the current season of The Mandalorian has no breaks, there is no issue but last year’s release did. So, making it easier to see various upcoming additions outside of Social Media for casual viewers could help the experience.

     

    Need for UX-Optimization

    Now that we discussed the visual changes, some usability aspects have been rather frustrating at times. I’ll start with a personal issue I’ve stumbled upon quite often. There is a strange restriction on how I can rewind what I am watching. Instead of selecting a specific time, it seems to allow me to fast-forward or to skip by 10 seconds, but that is it. Now, this could be a restriction by the app on my television but it still at times gets frustrating when it doesn’t remember where I left off. Also, if I select a show that I have currently watched, it jumped directly into the episode. Now, it didn’t remember that I finished it, but if I press to go back into the content-specific menu, I always end up back on the main menu. Now, I have to find the show I was watching to select the correct episode or check how many are potentially left. They don’t take away from the actual content that is offered but hampers the overall experience.

     

     

    My last gripe is connected to various shows that are available. Some shows’ broadcasting schedule did not match the chronological one. It is something that was shared online, especially with shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Its actual pilot was a film that is a separate option. So, if you are jumping into the series for the first time, you don’t realize that you’re missing an essential aspect of it. Marvel Rising consists of multiple short films that are all separately available properties. Instead of just offering them in chronological order, you have to look up a list online to figure out which one is the one you are looking for. This problem isn’t unique to Disney+, as Netflix has a similar approach with the Christmas special of Aggretsuko, which is canon, being a separate entity from the rest.

    I am curious what the future holds for Disney’s first venture into streaming. It isn’t perfect and has some potential to grow, especially if they add more mature content through Disney+ Star. There are other elements I would love to see added, such as a Marvel Cinematic Universe showcase, which could adapt the various films and upcoming original shows in the order of the official timeline. The same would be helpful for the Star Wars franchise, which consists of three unique time periods and may only expand in the future. I’d be happy enough if they give us some options to individualize our set-up. It is family-friendly content, so why not offer some fun before checking out the latest DuckTales reboot?

    ‘Marvel Disk Wars’: That Time Japan Turned the Avengers Into Pokémon

    Sometimes you start going down a strange rabbit hole. You get curious and think to yourself: “I wonder if there is an Avengers anime out there.” At that moment, you remember that they had one focused on Iron Man, Wolverine, the X-Men, and Blade. All of a sudden, you realize there is a strange show called Marvel Disk Wars. So, you start looking up what this could be. What hooks you in isn’t the premise but the odd designs of the characters. Unlike the previously-mentioned shows, this took a much more stylized approach with the iconic Marvel characters. It was a kid’s show with a limited budget that introduced us to a unique take on the Marvel universe. So, let’s jump into the story about how Japan saw a group of heroes and thought about sticking them into tiny collectible disks. What can go wrong?

    The series picks up with a young Akira, who is the son of Dr. Nozomu Akatsuki. His father was developing a device called the Digital Identity Securement Kit alongside Tony Stark. Of course, as is Marvel tradition, it was shortened to D.I.S.K. and was made to keep supervillains trapped within these containment DISKs. On the day of the announcement, Loki had other plans, as his goons the Celebrity Five unleashed a variety of villains, who escaped from the raft through the very DISKs that was supposed to contain them. Everything backfires when our Avengers team gets trapped within their tech, and only those imprinted with a Bio-Code can unleash them again. You might have guessed that Akira would be one to receive this gift. He is joined by his brother Hikaru, a bad boy with a soft heart cliché Chris Taylor, shy Edward Grant, and rich Jessica Shannon. 

     

     

    The series ran for 51 episodes that would feature a variety of villains and heroes from Marvel history. At one point, even Deadpool makes an appearance throwing the entire series into his usual chaos. The show revolves around these DISKs. Once one of our main characters needs a hero, they just throw this device on the floor, and it summons them. Yeah, it sounds a lot like Pokémon but with superheroes. It’s a kids’ show, so the focus is on introducing as many characters as possible so you too can purchase the Abomination DISK. Their designs are unique, so I’d be happy to see them adapted into other media like Marvel’s Avengers.

    Sadly, it also kind of shows in the series’ overall quality. They are dragging out quite a few episodes, especially early on as they introduce the kids. It starts strong with a showcase of various heroes that will appear throughout the show, but it takes a while for them to get the team together. The focus is mainly on the kids, so our favorite Avengers are mere holograms until they are summoned. It’s not a terrible concept, but it does drag on at times that I wasn’t able to force myself to finish the series. Yet, I’ll say it is something entertaining for kids that are into Anime like Digimon or Pokémon, who are also Marvel fans. I’ll say the most memorable aspect is just how handsome Hulk is in this series.

    Merchandise May Offer First Look at Falcon’s Captain America Suit

    Many of us have gotten used to keeping a close eye on toys and merchandising products. Sometimes they end up revealing a lot more than what one would expect. We have that very case now as well, as the site SuperHeroStuff has started sharing some products for the upcoming Disney+ show Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Among them are a pair of socks that may give us our best look yet at what Sam Wilson’s Captain America suit may look like in the show.

     

    The colors are the dead giveaway with a nice combination of red, white, and blue. We also know it isn’t just his usual suit, as it is missing the red highlights that were showcased in the artwork reveal for the series. It also isn’t too far away from the design that Wilson got in the comics when he took on the mantle. Still, this could be a design that is just being tagged with Disney+ to get people to buy it. If it is real, I am sad that there is no star on his chest, which is an iconic aspect of any Captain America design. There is a good chance that this is also just a prototype suit before he upgrades it. Sadly, the socks don’t include him holding the shield, which would’ve been a final confirmation. The overall design is quite unique in comparison to what we have seen before, so it’ll be interesting to see how they’ll introduce it in the show, and if this turns out to be the real suit.

    Of course, as the other half of the show is about Bucky, you’ll find socks featuring the Winter Soldier. It is just noteworthy that this design is closer to that of Captain America: Winter Soldier. His long hair and purely grey arm showcase that this version might have some appearance in the show. We could get a flashback that ties into Bucky’s story in the Disney+ series. It could also just be an older design reused for merchandising but the mention of the streaming platform is just interesting. So, this does mean we have to take this with a grain of salt. Just like with Sam’s design, it could be a way to sell the socks by building on the hype for the upcoming series. Still, it is fun to speculate and see if this turns out to be the design that got leaked early on socks.

    Into the Jedi Lands: ‘THE MANDALORIAN’ Finally Embraces its Samurai Roots

    The latest episode of The Mandalorian introduced its first Jedi character. Fans of The Clone Wars and Rebels were excited when Ahsoka Tano got teased for the season. It was a long wait, but finally, in this seasons’ fifth episode, she made her live-action debut. Her introduction strongly moved the recent episode’s structure closer to one of the two main inspirations behind the franchise. Star Wars’ is a love letter to classic Western and Japanese Samurai films. Up until this point, the latter was more subtle in its inspiration, but Chapter 13 has switched that up. Ahsoka’s debut pushed the series towards it closer to its samurai inspirations.

     

    There will be minor spoilers for the episode, so only continue at your own risk if you have yet to watch it.

     

    The series’ biggest Japanese inspirations were in the core concept. The journey of Din and the Child, who now has a name, echoes the story of Lone Wolf and Cub. Yet, the samurai aspect was never at the forefront, as it focused more on Mando’s skills with the blaster. This episode introduced a character that changed that. His search for a Jedi has come to an end. After meeting Ahsoka, he asks her to look after the foundling and teach him to control his abilities. Yet, she refuses his inquiry. Mando is forced to make another deal, so he could change her mind. So, together they faced Diana Lee Inosanto‘s Magistrate and Michael Biehn‘s Lang.

     

     

    The episode ends with two showdowns. Once again, Mando faces Lang in a blaster showdown. Ahsoka was in a fight against the Magistrate, who was elegantly wielding a Beskar steel staff. Their showdown took place on a single path surrounded by a beautiful Koi pond. It wasn’t about who can attack first but a ballad between two skilled warriors. Visually, it was a beautifully done fight. Earlier in the episode, we got the reveal that Beskar armor can withstand lightsabers, so it set the stage for a fair fight. It felt like the perfect balance between the Prequel’s elegant coordination and the Original trilogy’s methodical approach. As the article’s title implies, it felt like an episode of Into the Badlands had mixed with Star Wars and Akira Kurosawa‘s work.

    There were some gorgeous shots in this episode, and going by the artwork you can see above, I am glad they decided to go with the exterior outside of the home. The Koi pond was just a great touch to offer a unique visual strongly tied to its inspiration. It also helped to restrict it in a way that they could make every step have weight. They didn’t have an entire room to jump around. All they had was a single path surrounded by water. Yet, they still stayed true to the Western by having these two distinctive fights with different stakes. Switching between them just added more tension and weight to every swing of the saber. The outcome of that fight would echo for those waiting outside. Hopefully, we will see more lightsaber action in future episodes. It would be a waste to introduce Ahsoka and not have her return, especially if someone is out there wielding the Darksaber.

    It looks like the next entry in the Monsterverse saga will have a new home. According to Hollywood Reporter, Netflix made an offer for over $200 million to get their hands on Warner Bros. Godzilla vs. Kong. Surprisingly, they declined the offer and are hoping for a bid by HBO Max to keep it in their own house. It is a curious move as Netflix would’ve covered 75% of the budget. Legendary still has plans to release the film in theaters, especially in international markets. A third of its Box Office was in China alone, which doesn’t have any Netflix presence. So, they might be hoping to still bank on that market potential outside of the US. Plus, this film combines two franchises in a massive crossover, which would surely draw attention to theaters.

    The film is still slated for a May release next year. It is uncertain if theaters will open by then, so it is a risk to wait it out and not take the digital route. Godzilla vs. Kong‘s future is in Legendary’s hands, who decide its release even if they only have a 25% stake in the film. There is a good chance they’ll wait out the success of Wonder Woman 1984, which will have a theatrical and digital release simultaneously in December. They might be nervous about giving Netflix the release, as it could restrict their attempt at a theatrical release. Plus, their main goal is to grow the internal streaming service, so it would be a waste not to use such a tentpole franchise to draw in new subscribers. Godzilla: King of Monsters sadly underperformed, so there was hope that this crossover could bring more attention to the franchise. Yet, this decision could make it difficult to determine if the Monsterverse will continue beyond this entry.

    Taking a Closer Look at the ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Sales and Loss

    There have been many discussions surrounding the sales numbers of Marvel’s Avengers. Just recently, we got the report that the game had only managed 60% of its predicted sales with an operating loss of 7 billion yen (which is around $67 million) during that financial quarter for Square-Enix. Now, we do know that this entire quarter was massively hit by the ongoing pandemic, so costs in many ways have probably seen an overall increase. Crystal Dynamics, who are the developers behind Avengers, reported issues massive issues due to home office and relocations due to the wildfires in California.

    Now, in a report by IGN, Square-Enix president Yosuke Matsuda clarified a few aspects of what most likely bloated the development costs of that quarter:

    In addition to the amortization of that game’s development costs, another significant factor associated with the title was the fact that we undertook a substantial advertising campaign at the time of its launch to make up for delays in our marketing efforts resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a certain amount of development costs still to be amortized in 3Q, but we want to recoup it by growing our sales going forward.

    The game undersold, which is very interesting if you consider that the game supposedly is the second best-selling superhero game currently. Hell, it is, as of October, the seventh best-selling game of the year if you exclude the digital sales by Nintendo. It is placed firmly right behind Square-Enix’s other major release, Final Fantasy VII: Remake. That means that the game technically sold well during its launch. Yes, it isn’t anywhere near Insomniac’s Spider-Man, but that game proved the strength of PlayStation exclusives. In October, three games that got an exclusive release on that console are in the top ten of best-selling games of 2020. Still, it is disappointing that a game with Marvel attached to it undersold. But, it also proves that the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe does not directly translate to another market.

     

     

    One thing I think we also need to keep in mind is Square-Enix’s strange history with terrible predictions. Even in 2006, the same year highly successful games Kingdom Hearts II and Final Fantasy XII released, they slashed their income figures from 17.5 billion to 10 billion yen. They had the same issue in 2012, where the underperformance of Sleeping Dogs led to sales and profit expectation cuts. Just in 2013 alone, Tomb RaiderHitman Absolution, and Sleeping Dogs continued to underperform. In total, they sold 8.75M which was a far cry from their expected 14.9M. Tomb Raider especially, another entry by Crystal Dynamics, had a reported production budget of 100M, so it also had to reach at least five to ten million units sold, which it certainly wasn’t able to do at the time.

    So, what we are seeing with Avengers is history repeating itself, only this time with an IP that many assume will make money due to its film counterpart. Just to give a comparison, let us look at another recent release on a console surrounding the brand. The Switch’s exclusive Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 was considered a success with surpassing one million sales by early 2020. Yet, many are claiming that the success of the MCU would technically have to catapult game adaptation sales like with Marvel’s Avengers. The IP is at the peak of its success, so it just makes sense on a surface level. Yet, MUA3 sold less than the brand new IP Astral Chain. Both games still enjoy a successful release, but it highlights that it is difficult to translate the success between markets. Games are more expensive investments, and the different gaming genres have unique audiences. This fact especially is very evident with the release of the Avengers. The Switch has sold more than 40 million units, so there is a large market here. We have no idea about the production budget that is a comparison point for the Crystal Dynamics game, which could also determine its success. 

     

     

    The year has seen an overall increase in the market, but it certainly hasn’t been a cakewalk either. Square-Enix’s financial results showcase that the higher production costs and diminished demand due to a global economic slump are still affecting companies heavily in an industry that, on-paper, is booming. There are a lot of factors at play here. The pandemic did boost digital sales, which would mean they have much higher margins in profit, something that was hinted at by EA five years ago. Avengers is their second best-selling digital release, which also is an interesting factor to consider.

    For now, the game has yet to make up its production costs. HD section of Square-Enix only seems to cover the actual sales of the game, which means that it also depends on MTX to cover some of the losses with current Black Friday sales-boosting those numbers. We also still have the holidays coming that could play an integral role. As Matsuda points out, upcoming character additions also can strengthen sales, especially fan-favorite characters like Black Panther and Spider-Man, who are going to join the game in 2021. Also, we have to keep in mind this is a Games-as-a-Service model. It is a long-term investment early on with future content covered by microtransactions. So, these numbers right now don’t say anything about its actual success, only where it is starting. Unlike Tomb Raider, they can cover the loss throughout the next quarter through microtransactions. Plus, Black Friday and holiday sales are great boosters. If they are smart, Crystal Dynamics and Square-Enix will reveal future character additions before the holidays to get more attention to the game. 

     

     

    Ben Kuchera from Polygon probably made the best assessment when he discussed Destiny‘s extravagant $500 million budget. GaaS are long-term investments with massive marketing and pre-production costs for an entire year of content. These costs cover a large quantity of post-launch content. These numbers only confirm that they invested a lot of money early on that couldn’t be covered directly by costs in that quarter. In a best-case scenario, the game would have covered its production costs, but it would not have turned much of an actual profit in its release. Also, Square-Enix’s quarter ends in September, so it makes sense that a lot of the game’s performance is also indicative of the third quarter and not just one of its release. Square-Enix most likely will not drop this game anytime soon. As long as they can make money off of the microtransactions and cover future additions, we’ll see this game grow.

    Plus, they made a multi-game deal with Marvel that adds more pressure to keep the first game running. There are a lot of factors influencing this, may it be the additional costs due to the pandemic and the overall reception of a faulty release. It is too early to call it a failure, but it most likely is a disappointment from Square-Enix’s point of view for now. If their long-term investment turns a profit, all this that we are discussing, at the end of the day, will be meaningless. The biggest concern will most likely be the continued negative press coverage that affects its word-of-mouth. Sandra Saad did win a Golden Joystick Award for her performance as Kamala Khan, which could help WOM for now. Time will tell if Avengers manages to regain players, be forced to do a soft launch, or even take the 2.0 route. For now, we can only see how Square-Enix and Crystal Dynamics handle the situation and turn the game into what it can be.
