Black Adam is quite possibly one of the most anticipated DC movies in development and is already living up to the hype with the addition of some of DC’s most iconic characters. With such a rich library to pick from, the film will introduce those from the Justice Society and the Black Marvel Family. The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change and Black Adam won’t let anything stand in between him and protecting the kingdom that he’s called home for thousands of years.
First appearing in All American Comics #3, Ma Hunkel was created by Sheldon Mayer, would go onto don the mantle of the Golden Age Red Tornado in All American Comics#20 and became quite possibly the first female superhero, debuting even before Wonder Woman. Ma Hunkel was a simple housewife in New York city who would go onto open a grocery store with the help of her brother-in-law Gus. Ma was eventually approached by some local no good racketeers who demanded Hunkel pay up protection money to ensure her store’s safety. Ma responded by giving them a good ol’fashioned beatdown, leading them to hastily run to their car in which Hunkel’s daughter and friend Dinky were hiding. When the cops refused to help Ma in fear of retribution at the hand of the mobster Tubbs Torponi, Ma knew she had to take matters into her own hands and was inspired by her son’s admiration of Green Lantern to become the Red Tornado and rescue the children in a suit that consisted of Long Johns, a red cape, and a shiny pot on her head, but furthering the disguise by appearing as a man.
Ma would go onto attend the first official meeting of the Justice Society of America but would flee when the bottoms of her suit were ripped, in fear of her secret being revealed. She would later take on a pair of sidekids, the Cylclone kids, who were actually just her daughter Amelia and her friend Dinky. The character would later go on to raise her Granddaughter Maxine Hunkle, Aka Cylclone, and become the caretaker of the JSA headquarters. Ma Hunkel will make her first live action appearence in Black Adam and will be reimagined as a transgender character and work as the caretaker in Carter Hall’s Museum
With Black Adam set to introduce the Justice Society of America, many have wondered what the ranks of the team will look like. It is also unsure if this is their first iteration within the DCEU. In the comics, the Justice Society first showed up around WW2 after thwarting an assassination attempt against President Roosevelt. We know about a few members, but a new one might be joining the roster. One of the team’s honorary members, Ma Hunkel a.k.a. the Golden Age Red Tornado may be next in line to make her first live-action appearance in the film.
Recent reports have pointed to the character making their appearance in the film. Ma Hunkel will act as the caretaker of Hawkman’s museum. This introduction is similar to how she transpired brought back in Geoff Johns JSA run, where she was the caretaker of the JSA headquarters. In her first appearance, she disguised herself as a man to go out and fight crime under the monicker of the Red Tornado. She would lead the way for our favorite red android years later. The character also happens to be the grandmother of the recruit Cyclone, who is also set to make her live-action debut in the film. Along with the report, it’s rumored that the character will be reimagined as a transgender character, a welcome addition for more inclusivity.
Black Adam currently has no set release date and will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. The film will star Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, and Sarah Shahi. The character of Ma Hunkel has yet to be cast, and it’s unclear if the character will don the Red Tornado name.

Based on a character played by Joanna Cameron from the Shazam!/Isis Hour, Adrianna Tomaz, once a slave, was a gift to Black Adam from the infamous Intergang, a group of mercs powered up by stolen Apokolips technology. Adam quickly cut these mercenaries down and freed Adrianna who quickly became critical of the way Adam was running Kahndaq and how he could be doing things better. Adam quickly fell for Adrianna and the two would wed in a ceremony officiated by Shazam, with many prominent members of the Shazamly in attendance such as Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr, Uncle Dudley, and of course Tawky Tawny.
Adrianna was given the the amulet of Isis after being approved by now sitting wizard, Captain Marvel. The amulet once belonged to Queen Pharaoh Hatshepsut, a previous champion of the wizard. The amulet of Isis, once in hand and the words “I am Isis” are spoken, allowed he or she who wore it to be instilled with the powers of the goddess Isis: speed, strength, wisdom, flight, and the ability to control nature. Together Adam and Adrianna traveled throughout the Middle East freeing the enslaved and searching for Adrianna’s lost brother, Amon, after the two were separated in enslavement. Amon would soon become bestowed with powers similar to Adam and Tomaz, donning the name Osiris.
A much more watered down version of the character named Zari, played by Tala Ashe, has become a series regular on Legends of Tomorrow wielding a similar amulet that allows her to control wind, the character is a hacker from the future who joined the legends to save her brother. Sarah Shahi has been cast in Black Adam and will play the powerful love interest herself.
While Black Adam may have been removed from the studio’s release slate, nothing seems to be slowing down its production. Recently, we got the news of Egyptian goddess Isis being added to the film. There are also rumors of popular Justice Society of America villain Eclipso making an appearance. With just a few known character spots left to fill, many have begun to wonder who may fill the antagonist role in the movie about one of DC’s most powerful antagonists.
It’s being reported that WB has their eyes on Marwan Kenzari to play the films main antagonist Sabbac. The villain had three different comic iterations over the years, but the film will focus on Ishmael Gregor. He is the most well-known identity of Sabbac for the few that read his short run. He was a Russian immigrant, who made his way to New York, where he becomes a mob boss. Ishmael initiates a demonic ritual in which he sacrifices many innocent people to gain the powers of Sabbac. This is actually an acronym for the six that gives him his power, Satan, Aym, Belial, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, and Crateis. This is quite similar to how Shazam#s name in the comic derives from six immortal elders. Those were Solmon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury.
It seems highly likely that they could be combining some elements from the film. It seems they are changing his powers though, as Illuminerdi pointed out that there will be a crown of Sabbac. This may help them keep a PG rating instead of going into the satanistic origins of the characters abilities. The casting of Kenzari also moves away from the characters’ Russian background. He is described as a descendent of a “murdered pharaoh” so they could connect him to Adam’s past.
Black Adam currently has no release date, set to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and will star Dwayne Johnson, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, and Sarah Shahis
HBO Max’s Green Lantern was announced back in 2019 during the streaming service’s reveal event. We had little information at the time besides Greg Berlanti‘s involvement. He is certainly no stranger to DC, as he pioneered the current DC TV line-up. He is well-known behind the shows The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Titans, and Doom Patrol. Ever since we have not received any updates on the status of the show. Finally, Deadline announced that the show would be written by Arrowverse alum Marc Guggenheim and writer Seth Grahame-Smith, who is known for The Lego Batman Movieand the It films. With the announcement of the writers, we got also got the confirmation that the show was ordered for ten hour-long episodes. It will feature the likes of many fan-favorite lanterns such as Alan Scott, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Guy Gardner, Sinestro, and Kilowog. They also teased new additions to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps. Story details are still being kept under wraps so it will be interesting how they balance the different eras.
Alan Scott is the sole lantern of the Justice Society of America and is still confirmed as Earth’s first Green Lantern. It is uncertain if we even see Sinestro from the Yellow Lantern Corps at one point in the series. This show has the chance to introduce some really unique dynamics and relationships with its large cast. Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz, two recent additions, have shown the difficulties of fighting their inner demons. Especially Jessica’s anxiety could be an important aspect of the story. The powered rings are heavily tied to the characters’ emotions. So, they can use this chance to highlight the struggles we face in our own lives.
This is the most info we’ve gotten on the Green Lantern series in some time. Geoff Johns’ MadGhost Productions has also added the upcoming live-action series, so they will most likely be involved alongside Berlanti Productions. It’s currently unclear if fan-favorite characters such as Kyle Rayner, Jon Stewart, and Hal Jordan will make an appearance. It does seem likely they could be saved for a film project, or are introduced in a future season.
Though having recently been taken off the release slate, Black Adam doesn’t seem to be slowing down its development behind the scenes with casting becoming more and more frequent as of late. With the recent addition of Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, that only leaves a few more to be cast out of the characters we know will have a presence in the film.
Recent casting news points to Sarah Shahi being in talks to portray the female lead of the film, Adrianna Tomaz, better known as Isis in the comics. Tomaz is Teth-Adams love interest in the film and is also a mother to a son who has yet to be cast. Adrianna was once a slave who was freed by Black Adam. After he killed her slavers, she served as council to Adam as he ruled over Kahndaq and the two soon wed. Adrianna wields the amulet of Isis and when she speaks the words “I am Isis” is infused with the powers of the goddess and given the ability to control the forces of nature as well as speed, strength, and durability.
Black Adamwill be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and currently has no set release date but is set to begin filming early next year. The film will feature the likes of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the titular character along with introducing the Justice Society America currently made up of Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, with Dr Fate and Cyclone remaining uncast.
With filming on the third installment in the Sony-Marvel Spider-Man universe set to begin filming sometime this month, It seems the studio is rounding out its cast with the newest addition of Benedict Cumberbatch who is set to return as the socerer supreme in the upcoming untitled Spider-Man film.
Cumberbatch’s Strange may fill the mentor role that was once filled by Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark, and then Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. Cumberbatch will join Holland and recent addition Jamie Foxx, who previously played Electro is Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man 2, and will reprise the role in the film. Strange’s involvement in the film may add to the running theories of the film dealing a possible multiverse level threat seems to be making its way too the MCU.
Spider-Man 3 is being directed by Jon Watts and is set to release December 17, 2021 and will feature the return of Tom Holland’s Webhead along with the rest of the supporting cast from the previous installments.
With its second season just about to wrap up,The Boys looks to be eyeing an early production start for its next season. Of course, Amazon won’t waste any time, as the show has become a smash hit for the streaming service. According to Forbes, The Boys was the first streaming show to break into Nielsen’s top ten streaming shows as a non-Netflix series. It came in at third place with 819 million minutes streamed. It is only beat out by Lucifer and Cobra Kai. The shows highly anticipated third season received an early renewal prior to the current seasons’ debut back in September. Now, they aim to begin production in early 2021.
The meta superhero drama is set to begin filming on February 12th in Toronto and wrap around August 12th. The upcoming season will introduce Soldier Boy, played by Jensen Ackles. He is one of the first superheroes to hit the scene during World War Two. We haven’t heard any other casting news, so they might roll out once they film. Shawn Ashmore‘s addition was quite a surprise in the later half of the current season, so they might have quite a few secrets under lock and key. For now, The Boys’ second season will finish up its eight-episode run this week. The highly anticipated finale “What I Know” will surely blow many fans minds (pun intended).
Once again the pandemic has hit the movie industry hard, this time affecting Warner Brothers highly anticipated and packed release slate. This isn’t the first round of delays the studio has faced since theaters shutdown in mid-March, being one of the first to release a film PVOD.
On Monday it was announced that Matt Reeves’The Batman would once again be facing another delay, moving from its October 1st, 2021 release date to March 4th, 2022. After shutting down production in March, the film had only just resumed filming this September before facing yet another day when their star Robert Pattinson, contracted COVID-19. The film has resumed filming in the UK and film more scenes outside in Chicago in the coming weeks.
The Batman delay was felt across the multiverse, reaching those in the main DCEU continuity with The Flash, Black Adam, and Shazam: Fury of The Gods all having their release dates reworked due to the uncertain times the industry currently faces. Andy Muschietti’sThe Flash has shifted from its June 3rd, 2022 release date to November 4th, 2022, it’s become hard to keep track of all the delays this film has faced so hopefully this is the last. Shazam: Fury of The Gods will move from its November 4th, release date to June 2nd, 2023. It’s unclear if these release date delays will affect the films current production schedules, with Shazam it’s become and apparent issue that the cast is quickly aging and these delays could make it much more of an issue for the film. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam faced probably the worst fate, having initially been dated to release on December 22nd, 2021, has now been removed from the release calendar and currently remains in limbo.
DC films such as The Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman 1984 remain in their current release dates but it isn’t hard to imagine that these films will also suffer the same fate. A delay for the next Wonder Woman film is almost certain, seeing as a Dune has moved from its December 18th, 2020 release date to October 1st, 2021, a date that belonged to The Batman before today’s announcements.
Many have tried and each time the lights went out. Just like that, the Justice League went dark. Justice League Dark could quite possibly be the prime example of being trapped in development hell. Not even Constantine could fight through this hell. The earliest reports on the film began all the way back in 2012. Rumors began to swirl of Guillermo del Toro‘s possibly developing the film. It would bring together some of DC’s best and brightest supernatural characters. During an interview with Gizmodo, del Toro’s 2012 animated feature Rise of The Guardians, he confirmed the rumors that he was indeed talking to WB and DC about bringing these characters to the silver screen. As time went on, del Toro would drop updates here and there. At one point, he even confirmed his script was finished and would be turned in as soon as possible.

Sadly, news broke in July of 2015 that Guillermo del Toro had departed the project but would remain as a producer. Shortly after, he commented on his departure

Joseph Kahn, a long-time music video director, was the next to revive the project. He pitched the film along with concept art for the potential adaption. It was sure to hype up long-time fans who’d been waiting patiently to see the adaptation. The concept art for the film included the film’s main roster. It offered our first look at Kahn’s vision of how he would translate characters like Swamp Thing and Deadman to the silver screen.
Suddenly in 2016, it was announced that Doug Liman would be leaving Fox’s Gambitin favor of directing DC’s Justice League Dark film. It would be written by Michael Gillio and was re-titled Dark Universe. This didn’t last long as Liman would end up departing the project in 2017 and move onto the yet-to-be-released YA novel adaption Chaos Walking. With Liman out, The search for a new director was on, with the studio eyeing Andy Muschietti, who would end up helming WB’s Flash project.

Even among the many new directors, Del Toro‘s original vision remained constant. Constantine, tired of Shadowpact’s fame and flare, decided to get his own team together. His stubborn attitude certainly didn’t help in listening to orders, believing he himself would be a natural-born leader. As is typical for the supernatural detective, his past comes to haunt him during his journey. He ends up recruiting people he has wronged in the past to make up for it. They end out seeking the book of life and death to ensure they don’t land in the wrong hands. He is forced to learn he cannot do it all alone.
They aren’t the only ones though. Dr. Jason Woodrue, also known as the Floronic Man is also on the hunt for the magical books of life and death. Woodrue was described as a villainous Johnny Appleseed. He is joined by Klarion, a small-blue-skinned boy, who’s followed by a cloud of flies, once an ally and informant to Constantine who went mad on astral energy. Throughout their journey, Jason is changing into a bark-clad beast as a result of a regenerative serum. He leaves behind seeds that sprout massive plant tendrils that destroy everything. An encounter in the Bayou with him also ends with him destroying Abby Arcanes bar and taking her as a prisoner, which results in Swamp-Thing having a sudden change of heart and joining the team

A man known as Carl Carnahan has the books and is set to sell them to a mystery buyer. The thing is, Carl is dead and the safe requires his handprint. Constantine’s only hope was to recruit Boston Brand, who is better known as Deadman. He promises to resurrect him if he helps them get their hands on the book. We even get a showcase of his possession ability in a chase sequence that sees him traverse the everchanging landscape of a bustling city. This leads them to the morgue, a scene that survived almost every rewrite. There they are introduced to Carnahan’s mysterious business associate, Jason Blood.
Blood and Constantine bicker over who will be taking the books home. Blood recommends they contact Doctor Face and the Shadowpact, which naturally doesn’t sit well with Constantine. Deadman also refuses to possess the dead body of Carl, as he fears getting stuck in a rotting husk. His refusal doesn’t last long though.
Suddenly, they hear a giant fly in the room. Klarion makes his presence known and demands the key to the safe. Luckily, he has no idea that it is actually in the drawer in front of him. As he becomes impatient, he hexes the cadavers to make them his unwilling pawns. Their bodies become infused with flies as they stagger like flesh puppets, becoming the Invunche, overwhelming the trio. Constantine tries to transport them through his talisman but is facing some issues. Without much choice left, Blood transforms into Etrigan the demon. This transformation comes at a heavy price for the demonologist, as each time he turns, he loses more and more of his mortal life.

Once Constantine is finally able to rally them all to his cause, it’s revealed by Deadman that Constantine is dying from Lung Cancer. The team ends up at the Oblivion Bar, a watering-hole located in a pocket dimension. It is run by Edward Deacon, where we get cameos of various characters ranging from Detective Chimp, Shade, Animal Man, Dr. Occult, Night Nurse, and Shade. There they also run into Doctor Fate and the Shadowpact. Their members consist of Black Orchid, the Phantom Stranger, and Pandora, with the team being heralded as a supernatural Justice League.
Later on, Deadman tries to possess the Floronic Man, failing he’s able to uncover his true plan. Within the mind of the Floronic Man, Deadman is reduced by Madame Xanadu, She shows him a puppet show of the Gilgamesh legend. This introduces viewers to Inanna, who was in love with king Gilgamesh and was jealous of his friendship with Enkidu. The pair were very close, fighting monsters across the world together. In a jealous rage, she summoned Gugalanna, a bull from heaven, described as a one-man rapture that could collapse civilizations. Still, it was defeated by Gilgamesh and Enkidu. Its remains were hidden in the lost city of Eruk, located now in modern-day Iraq, The Floronic Man aims to sacrifice Abby Arcane to resurrect Gugalanna, and usher in a time before humans were nature thrived. The team follows him after losing one of the books in Zatanna’s bright-pink private jet. Swamp Thing refuses and simply gives them a leaf to water once they arrive.
Once they arrive, Woodrue is drawing a blood sigil into the ground, chanting an ancient incantation. Deadman uses the chance to possess an unconscious Abby before she becomes a sacrifice. Still, Gugalanna’s revival is successful. Swamp Thing grows to colossal size to take him down while Zatanna harnesses the magic of the world. Yet, it was Constantine’s sacrifice that saves the world. As he was held in the grasp of the colossal Floronic Man, John realizes the amount of oxygen in the arm could seal the deal. Constantine reaches for his Zippo igniting it in an instant, Woodrue, Gugalanna, Klarion are reduced to seed, and not even Swamp Thing was safe, with only a seed left behind.
Abby tears up after the loss of Swamp Thing. Luckily, as her tears drop to what’s left of Swamp Thing, he begins to sprout up once more, back to life as the eternal protector of the green. Sadly, the same can’t be said about John Constantine, At least the team believes so. The film ends in a dark room. We can hear a raspy cough before a blue glow illuminates the inside of a bomber plane. Remember the malfunctioning orb? Well, it managed to transport him the moment he set the Floronic Man on fire.
The film ends with Deadman chasing a crook down a dark alley and questioning him about a man with a hook hand., a reference to the man that killed him, Hook. John steps out from the shadows much to Boston’s surprise and tells him he’s thinking about getting the band back together. Sadly, we will never know what the plans were for the future of this franchise. This film adaption has since been abandoned and will likely never see the light of day. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Bad Robot would be developing projects focused on the characters that made up the team of supernatural heroes. It was announced that a Justice League Dark project currently in the works at HBO Max. So maybe there is still some light in the dark after all.
