  • EXCLUSIVE: Lia McHugh on Sprite’s Future Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe

EXCLUSIVE: Lia McHugh on Sprite’s Future Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe

When most actors sign on to appear in a Marvel Studios film, they do so without a clear idea of how long their character will be around. In the past, Marvel Studios was known to sign actors for six-picture deals, however, that has since changed. Still, it’s hard to imagine most actors don’t envision a future for their characters within the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe at one point or another. For Eternals actor Lia McHugh, she’s unsure of Sprite’s future but seems hopeful.

In an exclusive interview with Murphy’s Multiverse, McHugh briefly discussed her future as Sprite. While she can’t comment on future appearances, the actress does discuss how she has earned the distinction of being the youngest superhero within the Marvel Cinematic Universe – despite playing a character well over thousands of years old.

You know, as a kid you sort of daydream about different, crazy things that don’t ever really come true. And I never thought in a million years that I would play a superhero because there’s never really been a kid superhero, especially at this level in the MCU. So, when I got this part, I was absolutely shocked and its been special that I’m the youngest superhero in the MCU. I’ve officially gotten that title. I really can’t comment on any future movies, they don’t tell me anything. So, you probably know more than I do.

She is open to doing voice work in an animated project, though. When asked if she would voice Sprite in an animated series for Marvel, McHugh kept it simple.

I mean, I don’t know. I would probably be open to anything.

Fans can meet McHugh’s Sprite when Eternals hits theaters on Nov. 5.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Lia McHugh Talks About the Casting Process for ‘Eternals’

EXCLUSIVE: Lia McHugh Talks About the Casting Process for ‘Eternals’

Marvel Studios’ latest blockbuster, Eternals, will not only tell the story of some of its oldest characters. The film will also debut 10 brand new heroes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Lia McHugh‘s Sprite. During an exclusive interview with Murphy’s Multiverse, the young actress briefly discussed the long casting process she endured for the role as Sprite.

During our one-on-one interview with McHugh, we asked her about the casting process for her role as Sprite in Eternals. Interestingly enough, McHugh revealed she auditioned for Marvel television roles in the past.

I had auditioned for, I think, a couple of Marvel TV shows when I was a lot younger. So, it was the same studio that I had been to for auditions back when we used to do in-person auditions.

At the time, McHugh wasn’t entirely sure what she was auditioning for, although she had her suspicions it could be for Marvel again. As we’ve seen in the past, Marvel Studios used fake sides for the casting process, which threw the young actress for a loop.

I kind of had the idea that it was something for Marvel. I didn’t know what, um, it was weird sides and the description was someone with dark hair, dark eyes. I remember when I went in, I was like ‘Just so you know, I’m willing to dye my hair and wear contacts’.

Eventually, McHugh was brought in to audition once again. This time, though, she was given real sides, and she realized she was auditioning for the chance to be a superhero.

I got a callback and then, I think my second round of callbacks, I finally got real sides. “It was one or two scenes… and I was sort of able to figure out who Sprite was by googling and I was like ‘Oh my gosh, this is for an Eternal. I could play a superhero.’

McHugh would go on to do a massive screentest on a soundstage in front of director Chloé Zhao and the film’s producers, where she found herself feeling nervous. She was told she would hear back within 30 days regarding whether or not she got the part. To her surprise, at the end of the 30 days, she was then flown out to London to do a screen test with Richard Madden at Pinewood Studios.

I got to go to London for a week before I even got the part, and I got to meet Richard Madden. And then, it was actually my brother’s birthday when we got the call, and they called my mom and she accidentally hung up the phone because she was so nervous. They called back and she woke me up because I was asleep… and we all started crying. It was a very vigorous process.

It was a long process for the young actress, but luckily, McHugh secured the role as Sprite. Fans can catch McHugh in Marvel Studios’ Eternals when it hits theaters on Nov. 5.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Lia McHugh Was Surprised By Changes Made to ‘Eternals’

EXCLUSIVE: Lia McHugh Was Surprised By Changes Made to ‘Eternals’

Major studio films rarely stay the same from start to finish. Whether it be thanks to reshoots or constant script changes, movies are constantly evolving. It would seem Marvel Studios’ newest blockbuster saw plenty of changes, too, throughout production. During an exclusive interview with Murphy’s Multiverse, Eternals star Lia McHugh revealed she was caught off guard by a handful of changes made to the movie between the time of filming and its release. Of course, this is common practice for the House of Ideas. Sometimes it’s meant to keep actors in the dark. Other times, however, the alterations are made to enhance the quality of the film. Either way, statements regarding alterations throughout production have become a recurring statement among those involved with Marvel’s projects.

When asked directly if any parts of the final product were a surprise to her, McHugh responded:

There were a lot of changes… I mean, not a lot. There were a few changes made from when we shot the movie and then a couple things were changed in reshoots.

While this may not be all too interesting, it’s what she says next that will pique fans’ interest:

One of the after-credits scenes I was surprised. I watched like a rough cut of the movie before I saw the final cut, and I actually was surprised by a few things. I can’t say too much about it. But yeah, there were a few things that were changed that I was surprised.

It’s important to note that the up-and-coming actress does not specify what she was surprised by; it could have been because the after-credit scene was changed, or simply because she didn’t know it existed. Either way, it would appear Marvel Studios had a few secrets up its sleeve for both audiences and the cast of Chloe Zhao‘s latest work.

Eternals hits theaters on November 5, should fans like to see what surprises McHugh might have been talking about.

  • World War Hulk(s): What It Could and Should Be

World War Hulk(s): What It Could and Should Be

On Wednesday, Geeks World Wide broke the news that the next time we could potentially see Mark Ruffalo‘s Jade Green Giant is in a film adaptation of World War Hulk that will spring out of Disney Plus’s upcoming She-Hulk series releasing in 2022. With a World War Hulk(s) movie in the making, Anthony and Dalbin break down what a feature adaption of the comic could and should be!

Anthony: There’s always been a fascination from the comic book community about what a World War Hulk adaption would look like on the big screen. Does it need to be comics canon? Not completely. Some things are necessary, though.

We need to see Bruce Banner at odds with the Avengers physically. We got a taste of that in Age of Ultron as Hulk took on Veronica the hulk buster, but that didn’t have the emotional stakes this one could potentially have.

Whether it’s an accident or something more significant, Bruce could be at odds with one of the more powerful leaders of the Avengers. Maybe a throwdown with Captain Marvel, or perhaps a rematch with Thor? All the possibilities are tantalizing, the difference being that this time there’s personal stakes attached.

Even seeing something like the Hulk and his brethren take on multiple Avengers could have catastrophic consequences for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also would be extremely compelling, bringing grit and grime the Hulk has been way overdue for. This is also potentially a great way for Mark Ruffalo to end his run as the Hulk. He’s getting a bit older and maybe he doesn’t want to do this forever. A story like this would be a satisfying conclusion to his arc if Marvel Studios and Ruffalo chose to go that route. However it goes, World War Hulk has the potential to change the fabric of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s storytelling as we know it.

    she hulk production

Dalbin: She-Hulk, the Disney+ 10-part series, is shrouded in some mystery, but what we know is it will star Tatiana Maslany as the lead heroine and Jameela Jamil as the villainous Titania. They’re the newcomers joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the show is equally as important for who is returning.

Fresh off appearing in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the Abomination and a now-human Bruce Banner will feature in She-Hulk. As Jennifer Walters’s cousin, it’s no surprise we’ll see Banner, but last we saw Emil Blonsky he was no longer in a S.H.I.E.L.D. holding facility. (He was most likely on board the Raft). Instead, he had just fought Wong in the underground Fight Club that the new leader of the Ten Rings was overseeing. He and Wong left through a portal as Wong was training him on how to be a more effective fighter, however, it’s never made clear as to why Wong is training Abomination.

Could the Abomination, who is now free, be recruited by Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Val for whatever her endgame is? Does she send Blonsky after She-Hulk? More importantly, is Banner then forced to transform into the Hulk to defend his cousin from the two superpowered villains?

Banner is the one whose appearance in Shang-Chi‘s post-credits scene raised even more eyebrows. No, not because Jolly Green seemed to be serving in a leadership role post-Endgame with Captain Marvel and Wong, but because he was human. Yes, his arm was in a sling, but he was very much Mark Ruffalo. What happened post-Endgame that split Hulk and Banner after Banner spent time post-Infinity War bringing them together? And how do we get from Banner in a leadership role to Banner potentially being exiled off Earth Prime?

What if it isn’t the Hulk we know? Could we be getting ready to see the introduction of the Immortal Hulk? A Bruce Banner whose timeline mirrors the Banner from Earth-Prime until the One Below All possesses him? This Hulk, in the comics, actually killed the son of Sue Storm and Reed Richards. Yes, the Franklin that tried to save the multiverse. An all-powerful Hulk unhinged is strong enough to be jettisoned off-world, but what if stopping at one Hulk isn’t enough? What if She-Hulk or any Hulk-like character are blasted off Earth Prime?

With the Multiverse opening up following the events of Loki, what we thought we knew about the Marvel Cinematic Universe no longer applies. After all, a Secret Invasion is heading our way soon that could pave the way for even more Skrulls to descend upon Earth or reveal themselves. Everything has within the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been leading to this. Yet, it’s hard to believe we are ready for what Marvel Studios has in store for Hulk.

World War Hulk will enter production sometime in 2022. A release date is yet to be announced.

  • Exclusive: Character Breakdowns & Start Date for Grease Prequel ‘Rise of the Pink Ladies’

Exclusive: Character Breakdowns & Start Date for Grease Prequel ‘Rise of the Pink Ladies’

It looks like things are moving along on Paramount Plus’ forthcoming Grease prequel, Rise of the Pink Ladies. We here at Murphy’s Multiverse have some fun news for Grease fans. Not only do we have two character breakdowns for two leads, but we also know when production will finally kick off.

The Grease prequel is looking to cast the roles of Nancy and Richie. Both characters are portrayed as 16-years-old, with the production seeking actors that are at least 18 years of age. Nancy, who is as a founding member of the Pink Ladies, is described as a Japanese-American female who is “unapologetically artsy and eccentric” with dreams of going to fashion school in New York City. The person cast for the role must be a strong singer & dancer. As Nancy is one of the Pink Ladies, this will be a series regular role.

Richie is described as a Mexican-American male who is a part of the T-Birds. He is a “cool playboy with a reputation” who is also a secret romantic with more depth than others would expect from him. The character is also a twin on the series, with a twin sister named Olivia. The person cast for the role must be a strong singer & dance, they must also be fluent in Spanish. Like Nancy, this is for a series regular role.

Grease prequel has been in the works for quite some time. Rise of the Pink Ladies was initially in development at HBO Max, before the streamer ultimately passed on the project resulting in Paramount+ picking it up. Prior to Rise of the Pink Ladies, another prequel series titled Summer Loving was in development, while HBO Max was looking to produce Grease: Rydell High. As it stands, the status of those projects is unclear.

Rise of the Pink Ladies takes place four years before the events of the iconic musical, Grease. The series will show the rise of the Pink Ladies, which will consist of four “fed-up, outcast girls” who simply want to have fun on their own terms. Their rise as the Pink Ladies will alter Rydell High forever.

Filming on Rise of the Pink Ladies is will begin in January 2022 in Vancouver. As always, production timelines can change, for now, though, the production is on track for a January 2022 start.

  • Richard Madden Calls Ikaris A “Soldier Driven By Love” In Marvel’s ‘ETERNALS’

Richard Madden Calls Ikaris A “Soldier Driven By Love” In Marvel’s ‘ETERNALS’

Marvel Studios’ Eternals is set to release to the public in cinemas on November 5, but the press train has already begun to chug down the tracks. In a global press conference earlier today, actor Richard Madden spoke about the internal conflict of his character, Ikaris, as it’s portrayed throughout the film. It’s been known for some time that Eternals would be heavily influenced by the love story between Madden’s hero and Gemma Chan‘s Sersi, and now the leading man has commented directly on how it’s made the experience playing Ikaris different from his previous roles:

I really loved it. I’m kind of used to playing lovers often, and to play someone who’s such a soldier but is completely driven by love. All his decisions are driven by love and it’s actually him that’s wrestling with that. I’m used to characters who are very focused on their love and that comes out, and with Ikaris it’s the opposite of that. He’s kind of trying to bury that love because it gets in the way of his duty and he’s constantly wrestling the two.

The former Game of Thrones star continued with an explanation of how this direction for the character made an impact on his portrayal of the role:

And that’s kind of what made it really interesting for me to pull out that relationship with all the characters, from Sprite to Sersi, and kind of work out what this relationship is when you’re trying to stick to duty but feelings get in the way.

These quotes go a long way in hinting at the idea that Eternals could be an overwhelmingly human experience, despite focusing mainly on gods and monsters. The film releases shortly, so we won’t have long to find out.

  • New ‘Hit-Monkey’ Trailer Seemingly Reveals Major X-Men Villain

New ‘Hit-Monkey’ Trailer Seemingly Reveals Major X-Men Villain

The new trailer for Marvel’s Hit-Monkey, set to stream exclusively on Hulu on November 17th, not only gave us a little more insight into the plot of the series, but also a look at another potential antagonist for the murderous macaque. The first look revealed that Hit-Monkey would be going up against Lady Bullseye and Fat Cobra and now it looks like we can add Wolverine’s one-time mentor and bad ass ninja sorcerer Ogun to the mix.

Ogun once trained Wolverine in the way of the samurai before betraying him and trying to inhabit his body to cheat death. He later abducted and possessed Logan’s student, Kitty Pryde, before being “killed” by Logan. Over the years, Ogun has returned to haunt Logan many times, including during the Death of Wolverine story line.

Though he’s not been revealed as part of the show, the trailer shows a character who seems to be wearing the trademark mask of Ogun and wielding two swords. In Hit-Monkey, it seems that Ogun is one of several “bosses” that the title character will face off against on his quest to avenge the death of the ghost of the assassin Bryce, voiced by Jason Sudekis, who becomes bound to Hit-Monkey following his murder. The trailer seems to set up what looks to be a pretty wild ride over the course of the series with a few other obscure characters whoing up as well.

    Hit-Monkey begins streaming November 17th.

  • Murphy’s Team-Up Volume 3: Russos Assemble

    Murphy’s Team-Up Volume 3: Russos Assemble

In this week’s Murphy’s Team-Up, the group talks about what project they would like to see the Russo brothers tackle when they return to Marvel Studios.

    Anthony Canton III

Annihilus: 10 Things To Know About Marvel's Cosmic Villain

As far as an Avengers team for the Russos to direct, let’s get Captain Marvel, Captain America, Spider-Man, Thor, Dr. Strange, Monica Rambeau, and Banner as our main team. There’ll be support from others if needed but I like that crew. The villain for a crew like this would be Annihilus. A fun scenario would be an earth takeover as the Avengers take on him and his army.

New Marvel Comic Offers A Look Into Silver Surfer's Troubled Psyche

While it’s more likely they’re coming back for something major like Secret Wars, I’d be happy for them to work on a Silver Surfer trilogy. Following the mold they cut on their work with Captain America, I’d love to see them explore the “fallen hero” themes from Stan Lee’s seminal late-60s/early 70s run (honestly some of Stan’s finest writing) without having him confined to Earth. Surfer is probably one of the heaviest hitters in the toy box that Marvel Studios bought from Fox and I hear he may be introduced sometime in 2022 (it’s just a rumor for now, so settle down); the Russos, who have expressed their love for the character in the past, could elevate the character to heights he deserves.

The Marvel Annihilation Event - How It Changed Marvel Comics Forever

The next team I’d like to see the Russos direct is Captain America, Wasp,
Ant-Man, Mighty Thor, Shang Chi, Black Knight, Sersi, and Photon. The villain? AC is right: Annihilus.

The 10 Most Powerful Members of The Secret Avengers, Ranked | CBR

The Russos have themselves said that the inspiration behind Avengers: Infinity War’s team comprised of Cap, Falcon, Black Widow, and Wanda was Marvel’s Secret Avengers. Even in their debut feature for the franchise, Captain America: The Winter Soldier they managed to get Steve Rogers donning a suit clearly hinting at the one he wore while leading the Secret Avengers in the comics. So with that said, why not give them the keys to their own black-ops superhero team? There are a number of members that have already left the MCU but, hopefully, we’ll soon have brand new characters introduced that would manage to make the cut. Original team members Moon Knight and Nova would be welcomed additions, with Yelena Belova taking Natasha’s place in the team, all while having War Machine serve as the liaison between the team and government authorities. Hank McCoy and Shang-Chi would complete the team, making it extremely diverse in its disfunctionality.

Avengers 5' spoilers: A tragic 'Wandavision' leak sets up the MCU's future

With the Russos potentially returning, it seems like the obvious choice for them to spearhead the project featuring the Avengers fighting Kang the Conqueror, but I’d like to propose a different kind of story. After the aftermath of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the multiverse breaking loose is just a matter of time. They end up realizing that another multiverse is going to try and merge with theirs. A new team featuring Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, the new Black Panther, White Vision, and more face off against an Incursion. They meet familiar and new faces of old friends that force their hand in an unlikely war. Yet, at the end of the day, they realize this was just the prelude. Something sinister is waiting for them in the future.

Loki: Jonathan Majors on Playing He Who Remains and the Time Keepers | Marvel

I honestly don’t know who my preferred team for a Russo’s feature would be, but I am most excited for Sam Wilson to make his Avengers debut as Captain America, and would love for the Russos to have a hand in that. With all of the more complex storylines going on in Phase Four, he will definitely ground everything. His character also just rocks and will probably make a lot of wild stuff feel more human and relatable. As far as a villain, I would really like Kang to still be the Big Bad by Avengers 5. After he (his variant) appeared in the Loki series, it seems obvious to me that there is so much potential in building him up over time into something really special. The MCU sort of did that with Thanos, but mostly just through teases—we didn’t really see him do anything in particular until Infinity War. Kang, though, with Ant-Man 3 in particular, has the ability to feel like a huge and constant threat for the foreseeable future if they keep him around. It would definitely have an incredible payoff. Plus Jonathan Majors is going to be amazing, so we’d have a villain with some personality too.

The 11 Worst Things The Dark Avengers Ever Did | CBR

I’d honestly rather give Chloe Zhao or Nia DaCosta a go at directing the next Avengers film rather than the Russo brothers. I’d like to see the Russos have a go at a Dark Avengers or Thunderbolts Disney+ series instead. So inline with that, the team would be: Zemo, US Agent, Yelena Belova, Abomination, Songbird, Agatha Harkness and Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine. I can see them having a rivalry with a team Sam might put together, but not a wholly antagonistic relationship with them, with the bigger fractures likely from within the team itself. As for who they would be taking on, perhaps a villain like Morgan le Fay, or perhaps they might try to lay Siege to New Asgard.

  • DC’s ‘Black Adam’: Who is Doctor Fate?

DC’s ‘Black Adam’: Who is Doctor Fate?

Black Adam is quite possibly one of the most anticipated DC movies in development and is already living up to the hype with the addition of some of DC’s most iconic characters. With such a rich library to pick from, the film will introduce those from the Justice Society and the Black Marvel Family. The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change and Black Adam won’t let anything stand in between him and protecting the kingdom that he’s called home for thousands of years.

Created in May of 1940 in More Fun Comics #55 by Gardner Fox, many characters have been known as Doctor Fate over the years, but the most known of them all is Kent Nelson, who became the Agent of Order when traveling through Mesopotamia in 1920, with his father, and fellow archaeologist, Sven Nelson. In the Valley of Ur, the two discovered a pyramid that held Nabu, an ancient immortal being from the planet Cilia, who had been kept in a frozen state for centuries. But when a poisonous gas was released in the pyramid, killing Sven Nelson, Kent began to train with Nabu and learn the secrets of the universe. Through completion of his training, Nabu bestowed upon him the Helmet, Amulet, and cloak, making him an agent of the Lords of Order, known as Doctor Fate. Nelson’s adventures were guided by Nabu as his spirit had become bound to the helmet. Through his travels, Kent would meet his soon to be wife, Inza Carter, who’d join him in the battle against the the Lords of Chaos.

Around World War II, Doctor Fate and many other heroes teamed up to thwart a plot to assassinate President Roosevelt and go on to found the Justice Society of America. Others who have gone on to wear the helmet include Inza Cramer, Kents grandson Kent V. Nelson,  Kents Grand Nephew Khalid Nassour, and from time to time John Constantine.

Doctor Fate has previously only appeared in live action once, all the way back in the golden days of Smallville, played by Brent Strait. The character also famously appeared on the Justice League animated seriously, leading some of the series most popular episodes. The Kent Nelson iteration of Doctor Fate will make his first film appearance in Black Adam, portrayed by Pierce Brosnan.

  • Marvel Studios Could Do What Universal’s Dark Universe Couldn’t

Marvel Studios Could Do What Universal’s Dark Universe Couldn’t

Marvel Studios is expanding in more ways than one. Yes, our focus is primarily on the multiversal focus of the stories so far, but there’s another one that is heading our way soon. Its first tease came in 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con panel. Mahershala Ali came out and shared that he’ll star in a new adaptation of Blade. The Marvel Cinematic Universe would soon introduce vampires into its ever-expanding universe. Yet, that wasn’t all as shortly after followed the reveal of a Moon Knight Disney+ series. The supernatural side of this universe is expanding, but the report of a Werewolf by Night special for next year might hint at a bigger story at play. Marvel Studios might accomplish what the Dark Universe couldn’t.

To bring up some memories, In May 2017, Universal Pictures announced that a slew of films would create its universe. The idea made sense if you consider that the original Universal Monster films built their cross-over universe back in the day. Tom Cruise‘s The Mummy was the first in many projects to bring this idea to life but quickly fell into obscurity. It mostly is used as branding for the classic films to still make use of the visual. Still, the idea of various monsters facing each other is something that would’ve been great to see in the modern age.

Luckily, if Marvel Studios continues down this path, we might see that vision become a reality. Moon Knight is no stranger to face off against supernatural beings like Werewolf by Night. He’s a mercenary that believes he is possessed by the Egyptian god Khonshu. So, he could take the place of the usual mummy character in these types of stories. Blade makes for a natural addition to the team to represent vampires. Marvel Comics even had their own Invisible Man who was part of the modern Howling Commandos alongside Abominable Snowman, Glob, Man-Thing, The Living Mummy, Vampire by Night, and many more. Hell, they even had a clone of Frankenstein’s Monster that went by Frank.

Yet, they’re not bound by the classic movie monsters and can mix it up with their own. It’s uncertain if the team of the Midnight Sons is in the cards, but the potential of Ghost Rider, Hellstrom, and other supernatural characters teaming up would make for a compelling storyline. There’s also the option of pushing Nick Fury into a new part of the world, as he gathers the Howling Commandos together to face supernatural enemies. They could even bring back Dum Dum Dugan as a self-conscious Zombie in this story that leads the team. Not only would we get Neal McDonough back into the live-action franchise, but build upon the What If…? episode.

The comics offer quite an extensive source of inspirations to build upon a distinct corner of this universe. It’s also a genius move by Marvel studios to diversify their cinematic portfolio. Each new aspect of their universe allows them to attempt different types of stories. A space opera is not bound by the story conventions of a horror flick. They’re truly embracing their genre diversity rule by mixing up the characters they introduce. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was pitched as a horror story and we may get many more in the future. Perhaps his story is also building into the Marvel Monster corner of this franchise.
