We’ve been long waiting for an official casting for the upcoming The Mandalorian focused on Ahsoka Tano. Luckily, one has arrived and it’s quite the big announcement. The Hollywood Reporter has just announced that Hayden Christensen is returning as Anakin Skywalker, or rather as Darth Vader, in the upcoming Disney+ series. It’s his second return in the role, as he’ll also star in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
Dave Filoni is writing the series with Jon Favreau acting as a producer. Plot details remain under lock and key, but Christensen’s inclusion is a curious addition. The series supposedly takes place after Ahsoka meets with Din Djarin in The Mandalorian. Why is this relevant? Well, that was after the fall of the Empire and Darth Vader’s death as the New Republic started to form. There’s a chance he might make an appearance as a Force Ghost or even in flashbacks.
It’s great seeing the actor returning in the role beyond just Obi-Wan Kenobi. There’s a good chance that the welcoming experience might’ve convinced him to give the franchise another chance as it continues to expand on Disney+. There’s still a lot of potential on resisting Darth Vader’s story, especially if they take inspiration from 2020’s comic run on the character. We’ll see if there’s more Star Wars in his future.
It looks like casting is underway for the upcoming Disney+ spin-off Ahsoka. It’ll continue the story set up in The Mandalorian, where Rosario Dawson‘s take on the iconic Star Wars character sets out to find out what happened to Ezra after the events of Rebels. Cinelinx’s Jordan Maison and SlashFilm’s Adam Frazier shared some insight into the potential actors up for the role, as they shared information that includes Lana Condor, Tati Gabrielle, and Havana Rose Lui.
Sabine Wren has quite a few ties to the plot focused around the return to Mandalore. She is a female Mandalorian warrior, who acted as a revolutionary leader in the early times of the rebellion. She even was another Mandalorian to wield the Darksaber. Her goals align with those of Bo-Katan and her introduction into live-action might be the first inklings towards the overarching plot of the various stories.
The Mandalorian’s third season got delayed by some time, as we’re first to expand the franchise through the upcoming The Book of Boba Fett series. With Ahsoka rumors making the rounds, it might possibly enter production after Djin Darin’s story continues in the third season. So, they might even introduce Sabine in the mainline series before she takes a central role in the spin-off.
It was with little surprise that Lucasfilm announced to be developing a live-action Ahsoka series, following her live-action introduction in the second season of The Mandalorian. Ever since that announcement on December 10, 2020, that fans have eagerly awaited the confirmation that Mandalorian warrior Sabine Wren would be appearing alongside Rosario Dawnson‘s Ahsoka Tano, as her search for their long-lost friend Ezra Bridger continues.
This news has now seemingly been confirmed in a trade interview by Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming, television, and animation over at Marvel Studios, where, when referring that animation characters have often made the jump to live-action, it reads:
Dawson is leading a live-action Ahsoka spinoff for Disney+, with sources saying Lucasfilm is looking for an actress to star opposite Dawson as Mandalorian warrior Sabine Wren.
With Mena Massoud reportedly being the front runner to play live-action Ezra Bridger, and Lars Mikkelsen linked to the Admiral Thrawn role, all that’s missing is from Ahsoka‘s main cast is someone for the Sabine part. And we now have confirmation that Lucasfilm is indeed looking for someone to play the former Ghost crew member.
If rumors are true, they’ll also be joined by The Clone Wars character Barriss Offee. It seems worlds are colliding in the upcoming Ahsoka series, which will unite many open story points from Star Wars many animated series. It always opens up the potential to also expand into additional spin-offs that continue to expand upon the galaxy’s lore and visit the many unexplored corners along the way.
It looks like we are finally getting our first tidbits on the upcoming live-action The Mandalorian spin-off focused on Ahsoka Tano. The Star Wars: The Clone Wars character gained quite a bit of popularity and finally adapted into live-action during Din Djarin’s travels to uncover Grogu’s heritage. In the series, she got played by Rosario Dawson, and it wasn’t long until a spin-off series got announced. We haven’t heard much from it since, but it seems Illuminerdi may have gotten their hands on some curious castings. They state that Lucasfilm is currently casting Barris Offee. The character had a substantial role in The Clone Wars and was voiced by Meredith Salenger. However, she made her live-action debut in Attack of the Clones. At the time, Nalini Krishan took on the role. There is no word if they are recasting or looking for Krishan to reprise the role. In the series, she was a Padawan along with Ahsoka. Together they developed a strong bond. It all changed when she became disenfranchised with the Jedi Order and bombed their temple. Not just that, she even framed her former ally for it. As Offee fell to the dark side, she may appear as an Inquisitor. It is still heavily rumored the series will focus on Ahoska’s search for Thrawn, but she might be a recurring villain that keeps her company on her quest. Whatever direction they decide to go, it’s going to be exciting to finally find out what happened to Ezra Bridger since Star Wars: Rebels.
Star Wars has quite a bright future ahead of it. Just today, a brand new open-world game was announced as Lucasfilms starts expanding beyond their EA deal. The Mandalorian kicked-off a slew of brand new series for Disney’s newest streaming service after being a key factor in its launch. It all seems to be going well for the service and all eyes are on its future. Among the many announced shows, many are excited to further explore the story of Ashoka Tano. The character was first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. After a mixed reception, she grew into one of the show’s most popular characters.
Just last year, she finally made her live-action debut on The Mandalorian‘s second season. Rosario Dawson took on the character’s role for one episode before it was announced that she would get an entire series focused on her. Now, many wondered how her story would interlink with that of Star Wars Rebels. It seemed like her story picks up where that left off, especially after the mentioning of Thrawn during the episode’s climax. Of course, fans will know this also means we would potentially see the return of Sabine Wren, but it was uncertain if she’d make it to live-acton. Well. Dawson liking a tweet reporting on the possibility may add some credence to it:
It makes sense that she would appear in the upcoming live-action show. Ahsoka will focus on her hunting down Thrawn through the galaxy, as he is the only connection she has on the whereabouts of Rebels‘ Ezra Bridger, which was talked bout in Kessel Run Transmissions’ latest exclusive. It seems the original plan was to create an animated sequel to Rebels that would’ve explored his storyline before Jon Favreau convinced Dave Filoni to continue her story in live-action. It seems that the sequel was already well into production, as they were unsure how successful Din Djarin’s adventures in The Mandalorian would turn out at the time. There may still be a chance that these animated sequences are released in some form or another if they already worked on them. Perhaps some of it was reworked as part of the upcoming animated The Bad Batch series so they don’t lose the existing assets. Dawson‘s like of a report on Wren is just the icing on the cake for how this story may unfold.
The 2 Charleses talk about the big DD news, the insanity that was the Disney Investor’s Day presentation and review the latest episode of The Mandalorian! Have a listen below…
During the Disney Investor Day on December 10, 2020, we got confirmation of an Ahsoka Tano series, after the character made her first live-action appearance on Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian. Rosario Dawson will return to play the former Jedi in a series that will be developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.
With the possibility of introducing characters such as Ezra Bridger, Grand Admiral Thrawn, or Sabine Wren still on the horizon, the first major addition to the cast is Hayden Christensen, reprising the role of Anakin Skywalker. Whether he will get to play Anakin before or after his turn to the dark side is yet to be confirmed.
Confirming the rumors that the storyline would follow Ahsoka as she met up with Sabine Wren (as seen in the Star Wars Rebels series finale), Natasha Liu Bordizzo was confirmed to be playing the Mandalorian warrior in the series. Besides the potential of being one of the best additions to live-action Star Wars, in line with Ahsoka herself, Sabine’s history also allows her to eventually cross paths with The Mandalorian‘s storyline as she’s closely connected to the Darksaber Din Djarin is seen wielding by the end of season 2.
