  • Netflix’s ‘Sandman’ Adds Patton Oswalt, Stephen Fry, Jenna Coleman, And Many More

Netflix’s ‘Sandman’ Adds Patton Oswalt, Stephen Fry, Jenna Coleman, And Many More

When Netflix announced that it had begun development on an adaption of Sandman, people were both extremely optimistic and a bit cautious. The series would follow Morpheus, one of the seven siblings who represent an aspect of life. It includes Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destiny, Destruction, and of course Dream. These seven siblings were the children of Time and Night. They would be destined to serve their purpose until the end of time. So far, the series had only cast Dream at this point, and for a while, many had begun to wonder if any of the others would show up at all. Looks like that finally changed.

Netflix took to Twitter to officially reveal more casting for its upcoming adaption, including some fan favorites. The series has cast Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Donna Preston as Despair, Razane Jammal as Lyta Hall, Joely Richardson as Ethel Cripps, Niamh Walsh as Young Ethel Cripps, David Thewlis as John Dee, Kyo Ra as Rose Walker, Sandra James Young as Unity Kincaid, Stephen Fry as Fiddlers Green, and Patton Oswalt as Dreams Raven, Matthew.

It appears as if the upcoming series is set to adapt the first volume of the character’s iconic run. The story follows people trying to capture Dream’s sister, Death. But instead, Dream is captured and imprisoned for 70-years. The story picks up following his escape as he sets off to reclaim some very powerful items he lost during his travels. As production starts, hopefully we get some pictures from set teasing the look of Netflix’s next big franchise.

  • RUMOR: ‘Superman and Lois’ Director Lee Toland Krieger to Direct ‘Green Lantern’ Pilot

RUMOR: ‘Superman and Lois’ Director Lee Toland Krieger to Direct ‘Green Lantern’ Pilot

DC’s Green Lantern Corp has had a rough go of it ever since the live-action film hit screens all the way back in 2011. The big-budget film had hopes of spawning a franchise but got met with dismal reviews and flopped at the Box Office. It seemed like the Lanterns’ time on the screen has already passed. There were only bits of news teasing a new film. It all ended when DC announced that HBO Max began development on a series. It would span decades within the DC Universe, featuring Green Lanterns from across the DC Universe. The first castings found their way online and now we have our first tease of the production team.

A new report states that the series may already be assembling directors for the first season. The Direct reports that Lee Toland Krieger, who previously worked on CW’s Superman and Lois, has been tapped to helm the pilot of the upcoming series. He also is lined up for more episodes. Having someone whose previous works within the DC universe is reassuring for fans, especially as Superman and Lois wowed so many fans with its cinematography on a limited budget to bring the Man of Tomorrow to the small screen.

Green Lantern currently has no release date but will release exclusively on HBO Max. The series will span decades highlighting lanterns in each setting like Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Sinestro, and recently cast Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner and Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott.

  • CW Picks Up ‘Naomi’ Series and Passes on ‘Black Lightning’ Spin-Off

CW Picks Up ‘Naomi’ Series and Passes on ‘Black Lightning’ Spin-Off

The year 2019 marked the debut of yet another original character from Brian Michael Bendis, Naomi. He is best known for creating characters like Jessica Jones, Miles Morales, Ironheart, and Daisy Johnson. The story of his latest work followed the bright, young mind of Naomi. She slowly discovers that something larger at play going on in her small town of Port Oswego. The mystery expanded as Naomi began to dig deeper and deeper to discover just where she really came from, as she begins to develop abilities that rival even the might of Superman.

It was announced late last year that Ava DuVernay had begun development on a series surrounding the character for the CW network, writing and serving as executive producer on the series alongside Jill Blankenship. The project received a pilot order from the network and quickly jumped into production as it rounded out its cast. It’s now been confirmed that the CW has picked up the superhero drama to series. It’s currently unknown how many episodes the season will run and no timeframe for release has been given. DuVernay shared her enthusiasm on Twitter about the series pick-up:

    https://twitter.com/ava/status/1396894030533775360?s=20

For those unfamiliar with the character of Naomi and interested in her story, the best place to start would be Naomi issues #1-6. Naomi joins Bendis’ run on Young Justice in issue 10 and remains on the team till its end on issue #20. Naomi joins a packed roster alongside Stargirl, Superman and Lois, Batwoman, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. Alongside the news of a series pickup, the CW has confirmed that they’ve passed on the planned Painkiller series that was set to spin-off Black Lightning as the series reaches its end.

  • Dwayne Johnson Cast as Kryptro in DC’s ‘League of Super Pets’

Dwayne Johnson Cast as Kryptro in DC’s ‘League of Super Pets’

The League of Super-Pets film has been a DC project that’s been on the back burner for some time now. It was unclear who and what the film would follow, but it seems progress is moving forward. Variety is reporting that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson will play the Man of Steel’s best friend, Krypto the Superdog. With most plot details under wraps, the project follows Krypto as he teams up with a “Flying Cat” who is most likely going to be Streaky. It remains unclear just who the villain of the film may be.

The upcoming project won’t be the first time Krypto or Streaky got the spotlight. The character previously had an animated series on Cartoon Network that ran for 39 episodes. DC veterans Paul Dini and Alan Burnett developed the series. The series follows Krypto after being adopted by a family that believed he was just a normal white lab. Alongside Krypto starred Streaky, Stretch-O-Mutt, and Ace the Bathound. They were always around to help Krytpo fight Mechanikat and some of the notorious DC Villains Pets.

The project is set to be directed by Sam Levine and is produced by Johnsons’ Seven Bucks Productions. Hiram GarciaDany GarciaPatricia Hicks, and Jared stern will all serve as producers on the film. Serving on the project as executive producers are  John RequaGlenn Ficarra, and Nicholas Stoller. The film is set to release in theaters on May 20, 2022.

  • Animated ‘Injustice’ Film In Development

    Animated ‘Injustice’ Film In Development

Many fans always wondered what would happen if the DC Universe got turned upside down. What would happen if Superman embraced a darker side? The various Crisis events in the DC universe did tease this potential, but it wasn’t until NetherRealm Studio that went all-in with their Injustice franchise. The fighting games pitted villains and heroes alike to see who would be the last one standing. Its story was a standout when the first entry, Injustice: Gods Among Us, released in 2013. Now, WB Home Entertainment announced they are developing an animated film based on the Injustice franchise. We didn’t receive any details on the project, but we can expect an advanced sneak peek available in the upcoming release of the Batman: The Long Halloween Part II animated film.

With the film getting announced out of nowhere, there’s little to no information on the project. Warner Bros has not announced any plot details or casting as of now. The film could be an animated retelling or be part of their new choose-your-own-adventure animated films. WB Animation released an animated retelling of Under The Red Hood that gave the viewer a choice on how the events unfolded

The games did something similar. In the ending of Injustice 2, you were given a choice that resulted in one of two endings. One resulted in Superman getting banished to the Phantom Zone while the other saw him combine with Brainiac. As a consequence, he built an army to protect Earth and continue his rule overall. The games had an amazing roster to play with and we can expect a lot of familiar faces in the upcoming film. Here’s hoping the sneak peek offers more details on what to expect.

  • REPORT: HBO Max’s ‘Green Lantern’ Eyeing Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott

REPORT: HBO Max’s ‘Green Lantern’ Eyeing Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott

It looks like Green Lantern is all the rage again. Just recently, Zack Snyder revealed the first image of his original vision of Wayne T. Carr as John Stewart. Sadly, his original vision got cut by Warner Bros. and he gave a stronger focus on Martian Manhunter. Still, it doesn’t mean that the strong-willed galactic peace force won’t be seen again. DC and HBO Max have major plans for them, as a series is in development that will explore the various timelines and members of the space cops. It looks like the next casting is just around the corner, as Illuminerdi is reporting that HBO Max is eyeing Jeremy Irvine to play Alan Scott.

He doesn’t have the role yet, but he seems to be their preferred candidate. Illuminerdi also found out that it is pitched as a one-year deal unlike his future co-star Finn Wittrock, who was recently cast as Guy Gardner. Now, this doesn’t spell the end for the character but rather Irvine‘s version. In the comics, people commonly look at Scott as a veteran superhero holding the mantle of Green Lantern. There is a chance that we are introduced to a younger version in the first season and he is aged up in future entries. The series will span multiple histories and characters. We have no idea how long Alan Scott will be on-screen, as his story may act as a prelude for the rest of the season. Hopefully, we’ll get more details as official castings are announced.

  • New ‘The Batman’ Merchandise Offers New Look at Paul Dano’s Riddler

New ‘The Batman’ Merchandise Offers New Look at Paul Dano’s Riddler

The Riddler has been one of Batman’s greatest rogues ever since the character debuted in Detective Comics #140 back in 1948. He was famous for his mind, one that rivaled even the wit of the caped crusader, putting his detective skills to the test in a constant storm of riddles that all lead back to Edward. When word got out that actor Paul Dano would be playing the character, fans were stricken with joy. The actor’s performances in Prisoners and There Will be Blood made him the perfect choice for a cunning as well as obsessed Riddler.

The DC FanDome trailer offered a brief glimpse at the character’s redesign. Luckily, new merchandise from the upcoming film offers a closer look at Dano‘s Riddler, which was previously shrouded in thick shadows. The calendar includes a closeup of the character’s mask. It is a complete reinvention of the Batman rogue. He is famous for his green question-mark-covered clothing, domino mask, and top hat. Modern renditions ditched most of those staples, and he would reduce his wardrobe to a green shirt. This rendition of the character is sporting a full face mask, only revealing his eyes. The image reveals that he is wearing glasses underneath those goggles.

More graphics from the merchandise include a few more Riddler-centric months. They include the phrases “My Life has Been a Riddle” and “Unmask the Truth,” hinting at a new angle for the character. In a scene from the trailer, we hear him tell Bruce that “He’s a part of this,” adding to that theory. It feels like he could act as an anti-hero in a city like Gotham, where crime and corruption know no better home. Could this version of the Riddler be a byproduct of that society, which uses violent methods to expose the dark secrets Gothams held for years to come?

Of course, the merchandise won’t give away every secret the film has in store for us. We cannot wait to see this rendition of the character and what Dano has to offer for the interpretation. It looks like the character has an ulterior motive that may tie directly into Bruce Wayne’s family heritage. We’ve theorized there might be a connection to build up Scott Snyder‘s Court of Owls storyline, which you can read here. Hopefully, in the coming months, we’ll get a new trailer offering a closer glimpse at what the future may hold.

  • Jason Momoa Reveals He Co-Wrote ‘Aquaman 2’

Jason Momoa Reveals He Co-Wrote ‘Aquaman 2’

2018’s Aquaman took one of the oldest as well as most prominent characters in DC and rose the character to new heights. For years, he was always the butt of the joke, as many saw him as a glorified lifeguard with a social life that consisted of marine life. The first film saw the return of Jason Momoa as the titular Atlantean hero after his debut in a brief sequence in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He was the product of two worlds, a relationship that never should’ve been. In the franchise’s first entry, he teamed up with Mera and Vulko to find the Trident of Atlan and unite the seven kingdoms that once made up Atlantis.

Following the film’s critical and financial success, a sequel was quickly greenlit with James Wan returning to direct. While plot details for the upcoming film are still under wraps, Momoa recently shared some interesting tidbits on The Drew Barrymore Show on the film’s production:

After we ended the first one I went in with my writing partner and we dreamed up the second one and we went in and pitched the idea and the best thing I can give you is that I love it so much that I participated in the writing of it. And so, we did the first treatment and then James and our original writer David finished it off and all of our hearts are in it. Instead of just like getting a script and doing that like you are 100% being encouraged by your director and co-writers so that’s exciting for me and I’m excited to go over there. I leave in July and we start filming.

Momoa being much more hands-on with the upcoming sequel shows just how important this role is to him. He also confirmed that filming on the anticipated follow-up begins this summer. Hopefully, we’ll get more casting news on the rest of the sequel’s cast as we get closer to the production start.

  • Mark Strong Not Returning for ‘Shazam: Fury of The Gods’

Mark Strong Not Returning for ‘Shazam: Fury of The Gods’

The first Shazam film followed Billy Batson’s journey into becoming a hero and facing his first real supervillain, Thaddeus Sivana. The character was played by Mark Strong and left quite an impression. After the credits rolled, he was visited by the sentient caterpillar Mr. Mind in jail, which led to many of us assuming they would become the main antagonists in the sequel. The recent castings have pointed the sequel in a different direction and in a recent interview with Den of Geek, Strong confirmed that he would not be returning for the sequel.

I literally spoke to the producer last night, because I saw that Zach Levi tweeted that they’re about to start shooting in Atlanta. Doctor Sivana isn’t in Shazam! 2. What’s happened is, I think Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu and perhaps someone else — they’ve got some female villains in. And to be honest with you, I’m very happy to take a back seat to some female villains and let them have a go, because judging by the work that Emma Thompson and Emma Stone have done in Cruella, it’s about time.

It’s entirely possible Sivana and Mind could return in a future project. They may be assembling the Monster Society of Evil behind the scenes so that they have a fighting chance against the newly founded Shazamily. Shazam: Fury of the Gods will release in 2023 and will see the additions of Luci Liu and Helen Mirren in antagonistic roles.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Djimon Hounsou Returning as the Wizard in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’

EXCLUSIVE: Djimon Hounsou Returning as the Wizard in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’

That’s right, you read that headline correctly. Djimon Hounsou and his character, the ancient Wizard Shazam, will return in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. While I’m sure the Shazam-Fam will welcome the return, this does come as a bit of a shock based on the fact that the Wizard disintegrated to dust in front of our very eyes in the first film and his magical staff was broken. It will be interesting to see how the sequel works around all of that. While a flashback is certainly possible, I’d say that it also seems likely that those powerful but villainous sisters, Hespera and Kalypso (played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu), could have something to do with his resurrection. But it won’t be out of the goodness of their hearts.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods Djimon Hounsou's Wizard

Hounsou is no stranger to comic book properties, appearing in both Shazam! and Captain Marvel in 2019. Before that, he was the voice of King Ricou in Aquaman (2018), appeared as Korath in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), and with Keanu Reeves in DC’s Constantine (2005). His voice work also includes a part in Amazon’s Invincible and a 2010 Black Panther animated series in which he played T’Challa. But his “nerd cred” goes back even further, with a part in Angelina Jolie’s game-based adventure film Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life in 2003, and all the way back to 1994, when he appeared as Horus in the sci-fi cult classic Stargate.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods stars Zachary Levi as the superhero, and Asher Angel as his teenaged alter ego Billy Batson who was gifted a major “glow up” along with all of the amazing powers of the Wizard Shazam with the help of his magical staff. The DC comics film sequel, which is on the verge of commencing filming in Georgia alongside Black Adam, is scheduled to hit theaters on June 2nd, 2023.
