Grace VanderWall on How Stargirl Has Changed Going into ‘Hollywood Stargirl’

Hollywood Stargirl is on the horizon which continues the film that released on Disney+ back in 2020. While the sequel continues where the previous left off with Stargirl and her mother movie across the nation, it does not, in fact, adapt the original sequel novel written by Jerry Spinelli. So, it gives its star Grace VanderWall the opportunity to shape the character in new ways together with director Julia Hart.

In the film’s press conference, VanderWall was asked what we can expect from Stargirl Calaway and how she may have changed from the last time we saw her a few years ago. It seems the biggest change, as with any coming-of-age story, is that she has matured and also takes a closer look at what it means to go on that journey into adulthood.

So, she’s still her but I think that the difference in this one is she’s just maturing and kind of defining that word of maturity and what it really means to her.

    Grace VanderWall

She also highlighted how “nerve-wracking” it was returning to the role, while also growing alongside her and how it helped her “appreciate and be honored even more to play her character.”

So, it was very nerve-wracking, but I just feel like I just slowly grow more and more love for her. And just so happy to get to play her and she, you know, she’s growing up. She’s seeing the world, and experiencing different things.

    Grace VanderWall

After being more of a main side character in the first Stargirl film, but she gets the spotlight this time around. We’ll see just how much she’s evolved and what Los Angeles has in store for her when Hollywood Stargirl releases on Disney+ on June 3rd, 2022.

  • Updated ‘She-Hulk’ Trailer on Disney+ Teases Improved CG

Updated ‘She-Hulk’ Trailer on Disney+ Teases Improved CG

It’s an understatement to say that the CG of She-Hulk’s first trailer was quite controversial. The timing of CinemaCon seemed like Marvel Studios may have had no real choice but to release something while Disney+ embraces an ad-supported model. Yet, it seems that some more work is being shown off with a brand new trailer that has been made available through Disney+, as first noticed by The Direct.

There have been many that worried they might not truly improve upon the CG, but the new look highlights what may have been its underlying issue. Unlike Mark Ruffalo‘s returning Professor Hulk, the model used for She-Hulk had a lack of texture. Her body seemed too smooth in a way, which adds to the Uncanny Valley effect that it was out of place with its environment. Plus, it doesn’t feel as real as it could given how it stands out from the background.it brings Tatiana Maslany to life.

    via The Direct

The close-up might be the best showcase of just how much adding texture to the model makes a difference. The version on the right highlights pores on her face with more detailing added that highlights what was “missing” in the initial trailer release. Naturally, low-resolution footage doesn’t help matters and just adds to the issue while watching.

    via The Direct

The difference in the amount of time since the initial trailer release is impressive, but the trailer hasn’t been made available in all markets yet. They are very likely still actively working on the effects, which may become one of Marvel Studios’ most expensive series but it does help add some relief for those that wondered if the CG wouldn’t be reworked over time. It’s unclear just how much work went into this version and the next trailer release might help some get a better feeling for how the CG might end up being.

  • Three Ways ‘Ms. Marvel’ Will Tie Into ‘The Marvels’

Three Ways ‘Ms. Marvel’ Will Tie Into ‘The Marvels’

Now that Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness has released on the big screen, and Moon Knight has concluded its 6-episode run on Disney+, eyes have naturally pivoted to the next double entry in the MCU: Thor: Love & Thunder and the introduction of Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel. Ms. Marvel is about three weeks away from dropping, and as we have seen, the Disney+ shows are FIRMLY connected to the wider MCU (even Moon Knight had a reference to the GRC that debuted in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier). Ms. Marvel will be no different, forging ties to the 2023 theatrical release, The Marvels.

The 1-2 punch of Ms. Marvel/The Marvels seems in line with WandaVision/Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. As such, the speculation train is rampant as to how this story about a young hero from New Jersey can connect to the sequel for one of Marvel’s highest grossing films ever. We can start to answer that by going back to the source: the comics.

Based on the trailer, Kamala Khan’s power source seems incredibly reminiscent of the Quantum Bands. The Quantum Bands, gifted in the comics to Mar-Vell as he became Protector of the Universe, may offer us our first connection to Carol Danvers.

In the MCU, the Bands are likely Kree tech with a connection to the Quantum Realm. The Kree came to Earth-616 to bring Carol Danvers back to Hala, and it is entirely possible that they left some tech that Kamala Khan stumbles upon. The last time we saw Carol, in the post-credit scene for Shang Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, where she was quickly distracted and had to run off. It’s incredibly likely that will coincide with the timeline of The Marvels.

The Disney Plus streaming series Hawkeye may also provide a template for a connection to form between Kamala and Carol. In that, we see a young Kate Bishop inspired by Hawkeye after watching him from her parents’ apartment as he fought off the Chitauri. In the comics, Kamala looks up to Carol in the same way, and you see hints of that transferring over from the page to the screen in the footage that Marvel has released. Kamala idolizes Carol, and it wouldn’t be too surprising to see a similar scene in Ms. Marvel that allows for Kamala to develop a deep respect for Carol. Keep in mind that, at this point in the MCU, Carol’s adventures have taken place off-world, so Marvel is going to have to show why Kamala feels this deep connection to Carol.

Lastly, we can’t talk about how Ms. Marvel will connect to The Marvels without discussing the third “Marvel”: Monica Rambeau. Imbued with powers from thrice crossing “The Hex”, it is possible that Monica Rambeau will be the one to remind Kamala that Carol is not the hero that she thinks she is. Monica blipped when her mother was alive, returning only to have her mother pass and Carol, her mother’s best friend, nowhere to be found. In Wandavision, we see a Monica that is very clearly not too fond of Carol, and now she’s going to be with a person in Kamala who adores the person she cannot stand.

Given that Carol didn’t Blip, and thus won’t understand why Monica is so pissed, it’s even likely that Kamala is who tells Carol that Monica has a reason to not be happy with her. Given Carol’s stubborn nature, this will most likely be needed. At the end of WandaVision, we also see that Monica is told by a friendly Skrull that someone wanted to see her, and that someone could be a Carol who has now recruited a kid into space (if Ms. Marvel ends with Kamala Khan being beamed up in order to be protected). Imagine her anger when seeing that Carol came to protect Kamala, but not her.

With her power source potentially being Kree tech, the idolization of one of the heroes, and potential role as an intermediary between Carol and Monica, Ms. Marvel will most definitely be required watching for anyone preparing to watch The Marvels.

REPORT: Runtime for ‘Ms. Marvel’s First 2 Episodes Revealed

As first reactions are hitting the web from Ms. Marvel, we also get some teases on what the first two episodes have to offer for those excited to check out Marvel Studios’ latest project. There’s always some excitement, or even uncertainty, about the runtime of these episodes as Marvel Studios has not truly broken beyond the one-hour mark with its drama series. It looks like the same can be said for the

The first episode of Ms. Marvel will be 47 minutes long with the sequel running for two minutes longer. As per usual, it also includes the usual credits that are different depending on what region you are from, as they also include the local dub actors. So, keep that in mind if the runtime is slightly off in your local region.

The runtime discussion has been an interesting one, as many have gotten the feeling that Marvel isn’t using more time to fully explore these stories. As we’re seeing these projects as quite new for Marvel Studios, who mainly focused on three cinematic productions per year. As they expand, they likely have to adjust to it and we’ll see how they learn moving forward.

Ms. Marvel will explore the story of Kamala Khan. A young teenager who looks up to the heroes she grew up admiring, only to suddenly gain a special ability of her own. As the Pakistani-American tries to find out what she is truly capable of, Khan also has to balance her studies, avoiding high school’s usual trappings and the watchful eye of her family.

  • The Imperfections of a Jedi Master: The Duchess, The Apprentice, and Obi-Wan Kenobi

The Imperfections of a Jedi Master: The Duchess, The Apprentice, and Obi-Wan Kenobi

Duchess Satine of Mandalore is on the run, and Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi has been assigned to save her. The two have a long history together, dating back to Kenobi’s time as Qui-Gon Jinn’s apprentice. For a moment, all feels right again. Remarks and retorts are thrown back and forth as they relive their glory days, nearly forgetting about the weight of their responsibilities. The same weight that crushed any chance they had at a life together all those years before. Then, suddenly, Senator Tal Merrik is unveiled as a traitor. His sights set on ending Satine’s life. Thinking this might be the end, the Duchess admits something she never thought she would. “I’ve always loved you“, she says to Obi-Wan. The Jedi responds with one of his classic quips, “This is hardly the time-“. Satine stops him with a furrowed brow. She knows something about him nobody else does, and no amount of wit will substitute the admission she’s looking for. Kenobi takes a moment, and then he says it. “If you had said the words, I would have left the Jedi Order.”

Obi-Wan is a lot of things. To one generation, he’s remembered as the wise old hermit who set Luke Skywalker on the path toward becoming a legendary Jedi. To another, he’s seen as a valiant hero of the Clone Wars, who never faltered in the face of tragedy. He’s loved by legions of fans because he is brave, he is charming, and he always appears to do the right thing. He is Jedi Master Kenobi, a purveyor of righteousness and adept at all things not flying. What people tend to forget, however, is that he is also deeply human. Full of regret, sorrow, and longing. He knows where he’s made mistakes, and he knows where he will continue to make them. He’s just really hoping the next one won’t be as bad as his last.

It’s this trait, perhaps his most crucial, that endears him so completely to so many, even if they aren’t aware of it. Duchess Satine would end up surviving that terrifying brush with death, but Kenobi’s reputation as a by-the-books mentor did not. Suddenly, fans across the globe were aware of Obi-Wan’s true self. Free of obligation and duty, for just one moment, Kenobi became every bit the emotional puppy he had spent years telling his apprentice it was unacceptable to be. This is because, as much as he tries to hide it, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker are one and the same. They just have different coping mechanisms.

Kenobi spends most of his time in the prequel trilogy scolding Anakin. The young Jedi feels so much at any given moment, and he feels it genuinely. When a person is constantly bombarded with that level of emotion, it begins to manifest in one of two ways. It either numbs itself, or it boils to the point of outward reaction. Anakin reacts, and Obi-Wan numbs. The Jedi Master’s way of dealing with his own trauma is to stuff it down and live by his code, in much the same way a real person might bury themselves in work after a bad breakup. He never truly believed in the code as an end-all-be-all solution. It was just easier to cite a rule of “no attachments” than it was to confront his own feelings. Life is less complicated when you’re not allowed to do things anyway.

During the Clone Wars, Jedi Master Luminara Unduli spoke to Anakin about his love for padawan Ashoka Tano. With both Tano and Barris Offee presumed dead, Skywalker became frantic. Unduli remained calm. Searching desperately for his learner, Anakin was told by Luminara that it was not the Jedi way to feel so strongly for his apprentice. He refused to comply. The moment is played as an indicator of Anakin’s future, but it plays surprisingly well into his own master’s future as well. This same type of emotional denial would emerge again in one of the franchise’s most iconic moments. Faced with losing his apprentice to the Dark Side amidst the fall of the Republic, to which he dedicated so much of his life, Kenobi says something that flies in the face of everything he’s told Anakin since their partnership began. “You were my brother, Anakin. I loved you!”. This, good folks, is attachment. Unbridled attachment, showing Kenobi’s true colors in the same way they emerged when he thought Satine would be gone forever.

Unfortunately, with the untimely death of Qui-Gon, Kenobi was forced to begin raising Anakin way before he was ready. At such a young age, the Jedi Knight was still learning who he was, and the Jedi Code was simply sitting there like the galaxy’s warmest comfort blanket. Qui-Gon never got the chance to teach Obi-Wan how to love himself, and he was never allowed the time to sort that out himself. Being then tasked with the emotions of a young, wildly Force-sensitive boy likely stunted his own emotional growth, and in turn, negatively impacted the way he was able to deal with Anakin’s own needs. He wanted to help, but he just couldn’t understand the way Anakin would respond to the same scenarios as himself. Both cared, both wanted nothing but the best, and yet they always argued over how to solve the problem. One reacts, one numbs, and neither is able to comprehend the other. This is the true tragedy of Star Wars, a catastrophic lack of communication.

It doesn’t help that, typically, when confronted with accusation or pressure, Kenobi will respond with some sort of cheeky comment. For him, it makes it easier to sidestep the admittance of his own faults. Earlier in the same aforementioned adventure with Satine, the Duchess mentioned having a scar to prove she spent time with Kenobi in the past. “I remember carrying you to safety“, the debonair Jedi claims. “That’s from when you dropped me“, she informs him. The visual feedback on Obi-Wan’s face seems to communicate something along the lines of, “Why would you say that in front of my friends?”. In actuality, what Satine has done is cut through the teacher’s façade. In front of everyone, she has revealed him to be fallible. No matter how many cool moments he’s had in the past, everyone now knows that Obi-Wan Kenobi once dropped the damsel in distress. He is imperfect, and it’s beautiful.

If you had said the words, I would have left the Jedi Order“. Potentially the most important sentence Obi-Wan Kenobi said in his entire life. Only moments after speaking it, the Jedi Master would be given a near-impossible choice. Senator Merrik holds Satine at gunpoint, taunting Kenobi with the power he now holds. If Kenobi kills him in cold blood, he will betray his order and lose Satine’s respect, but if he doesn’t, Satine will die. Obi-Wan stands his ground as music swells, raising anticipation for the decision everyone hopes he’ll have to make. He grips his lightsaber, scowls, and prepares to do what must be done. Then, a blue-colored blade runs Merrik through. While Kenobi numbed himself and weighed his choices, Anakin reacted to save those he loved. “What“, Anakin says jovially, “He was gonna kill her“. The crisis is averted, and everyone involved is able to maintain the status quo. Life goes on, and nobody learns anything. This is the way of the Jedi, and its eventual demise. The rest is history.

  • ‘Echo’ Head Writer Shares Set Photo With First Look at New Logo

‘Echo’ Head Writer Shares Set Photo With First Look at New Logo

It’s not uncommon that Marvel Studios’ projects go through a variety of logos while they go into development. Initial announcements tend to use a logo strongly inspired by the character’s comic runs before starting to evolve into its own unique design. While we knew long before Hawkeye entered production that the character of Echo (Alaqua Cox) would get her own Disney+ series.

It wasn’t until Disney+ Day that we got our first look at its logo, which took a very simple design approach that isn’t new with any of the Marvel films. Yet, it looks like production has recently updated that they’ve updated the logo once again, as shared by the series head writer, Marion Dayre, on Twitter. While we don’t see anything from the actual production, we do get the series’ production name Solidarity alongside the new Echo logo.

The design seems a bit more steeped in what the series represents, and we may hopefully also get that in the eventual updated design for the logo, which has become part of their usual development cycle. The logo showcased above is very likely not going to be used outside of the production.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a unique logo design that was hard to decipher at first but was only meant for the production team. So, this design is very likely also following that very rule. Still, it’s always great to get an update, no matter how small it is and there’s a lot of promise to explore a smaller scale story with this series.

  • ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ to Take Inspiration From Martial Arts Films

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ to Take Inspiration From Martial Arts Films

Russian Doll’s Leslye Headland got a chance to sit down with Vanity Fair to talk about the future for Star Wars fans with her new series, The Acolyte. We’ve been anxiously awaiting an update on what to expect from the series. The new interview gave us a tease of how she’s approaching the series by highlighting the advice she got from The Mandalorian‘s Jon Favreau.

Jon Favreau said that when you’re working in this world, you want to go back to what George was inspired by. There were Westerns and then of course, Akira Kurosawa samurai films, and the fact that he originally offered Obi-Wan Kenobi to Toshiro Mifune …

    Leslye Headland

Hearing that there are many ways to approach the series, it seems that she focused on martial arts films as how she’ll approach the series. Headland highlights some of the inspirations that she is taking with her while working on this series.

So I actually went more toward martial arts films, and storylines that are a little bit more personal and less global and galactic. Those warriors were on missions that were deeply personal, with people feeling wronged and having to make it right. Wuxia Films and martial arts films from King Hu and the Shaw Brothers, like Come Drink With Me and Touch Of Zen. They’re monks that are also martial arts heroes.

    Leslye Headland

The projects mentioned certainly sets up a great concept. Most of Star Wars inspirations were from westerns and samurai films. We’ve seen some influences from martial art films, but never a project that was built around the concept. So, here’s hoping we get some great action and drama that these iconic films are known for.

  • ‘The Acolyte’ to Explore the Rise of the Sith During the High Republic

‘The Acolyte’ to Explore the Rise of the Sith During the High Republic

Russian Doll‘s Leslye Headland will head into a galaxy far far away with the new Star Wars series Acolyte. We’ve learned that the series takes place long before the prequel trilogy with around 100 years stated. Now, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Headland offered some more details on how the storyline will explore how the Sith grew in power before the events of the Prequels. Headland highlights a quote from Mace Windu that inspired her to take on the story:

In the prequels, Mace Windu says: ‘There’s no way that the Sith could have reemerged without us knowing about it.’ And Yoda says, ‘Hard to see, the dark side is. He acknowledges that this is a part of the Force that has been dormant, or at least hidden from them, for so long. What I immediately wondered about this particular period was: Who is practicing it

    Leslye Headland

She also teases that the title has many significant references to where the story heads, such as pointing to someone that is closer to the dark side of the Force. So, we may be seeing the rise of the Sith, with Amandla Stenberg set to play the leading role. Though the wording also hints at someone who assists a religious leader in a ritual. So, we might see the padawan that supported Palpatine’s rise to power. Many also hope that perhaps we meet Darth Sidious, who has been teased briefly in an iconic sequence from the prequels.

  • Deborah Chow Played John Williams ‘Star Wars’ Score While Filming ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

Deborah Chow Played John Williams ‘Star Wars’ Score While Filming ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

There’s something iconic about John Williams‘s score. No matter when you hear it, you instantly can connect it to Star Wars. Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s marketing team knew that as the moment they played Duel of the Fates in the teaser trailer, they knew what kind of emotions it would awaken.

While talking about making the lightsaber during action sequences in the Disney+ series’ press conference, Deborah Chow revealed that they couldn’t tell if the cast was doing them as they were playing music while filming. Not just any music as they were using John Williams‘ iconic scores to put the actors in the right mind, as Moses Ingram reveals how it felt hearing the music while simply stepping off a ship.

And it was sick, too. Because we’d be like stepping off the ship or doing something else and the music would swell. And you’re just like feeling like you’re 10 feet tall. It’s very, very cool.

    Moses Ingram

Chow highlights that this was their intention to use the music that’s become synonymous with the franchise to bring the actors to feel what it means to be part of this franchise.

Yeah, that was the big reason we did it, because there’s the music obviously brings the emotional component. And what John Williams has done has been so inextricably tied, it is Star Wars. so, if we put it on, all of a sudden, I see Moses go like two inches taller and everybody responds to it.

    Deborah Chow

The franchise wouldn’t be the same without William’s score and it definitely left its imprint on many. The inclusion during filming is a great way to convey the emotions it brings to life and there’s something special about the soundtrack of the Prequel trilogy. The most exciting aspect is to also hear the return of this soundtrack once the Disney+ series premieres this Friday.

  • Ewan McGregor Would Be Open to a Season 2 of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

Ewan McGregor Would Be Open to a Season 2 of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

It’s no secret that Obi-Wan Kenobi will be a limited series. Most of the advertising highlighted it as such, and head writer Deborah Chow has confirmed that this was their take ever since it was conceptualized. Yet, there’s still always a little glimmer of hope that we could see more and it seems that while Choh remains strong on how she initially perceived the project, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy is certainly open to the idea.

Mainly because everybody came together and had such an incredible time. Ewan had an incredible time. Hayden had an incredible time. So certainly from that point of view, everybody involved would love to see this not end. But we have to really spend our time asking the question: Why would we do it? If we were to decide to do anything more with the Obi-Wan character, we’d have to really answer the question why?

    Kathleen Kennedy

She’s not the only one surprised, as it seems Obi-Wan Kenobi himself, Ewan McGregor, has also warmed up to the idea of potentially doing more with the franchise. The experience working on the project may have certainly gotten his interest to return to the role in the future.

Yeah, I would like to make another one. I had such a great time working with Deb, and the actors that we had in this were so great to work with, and the crew are just… I can’t tell you. It was so wonderful to work on. I couldn’t wait to get to work every day, and on a long shoot like this, that’s something. Right to the end, I just loved the experience of it

    Ewan McGregor

While there’s no necessity for him to continue an Obi-Wan Kenobi series after the initial limited run, there are other options they could take. We have a few Jedi refuges after the event of Order 66, who might stumble upon the former Jedi Master and seek his help. Tatooine also seems to be commonplace for these Star Wars series to visit, which has become a bit of a running gag that every live-action series end up on the desert planet at some point. If they have a spark for a new series to have McGregor return, we’ll have to see what Lucasfilm cooks up in the future.
