EXCLUSIVE: Details on Mad Moxxi’s ‘BORDERLAND’ Role

Game adaptations have been hit or miss on the silver screen. We are anxiously awaiting the next attempt: the upcoming reboot of Mortal Kombat that only recently released its first trailer. Still, it isn’t the only new game adaptation on everyone’s mind, as Eli Roth is hard at work on his upcoming adaptation of Borderlands. Just yesterday, it was revealed that Florian Munteanu had joined as Tiny Tina’s guardian, Krieg. They seem to be taking a lot of inspiration from the game, as most casting announcements are for characters based on existing NPCs from the franchise. Well, we can exclusively reveal one more iconic character that will make her live-action debut, Mad Moxxi.

Borderlands 3: 10 Weird Facts You Didn't Know About Moxxi

The character made her debut in the first entry of the franchise. She was the main focus of the Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot DLC. She is the hostess of the Colosseum but also runs various bars throughout Pandora. The film seems to be aging up the character. They are currently looking for a female in the age range from 50 to 59 for the character who is described as “wedged into a red Victorian bustier,” which matches her look in the game. They also allude to her powdered white face and the iconic top hat, so they are sticking to her original design, but they are open to casting any ethnicity. However, they do seem to be eyeing Italian actress Isabella Ross or Human Trafficking‘s Mira Sorvino for the role.

The film is set to feature Moxxi’s Red Light, her bar which made its debut in the game during The Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC. There is sadly no mention of the Colosseum, so it seems unlikely it will make an appearance. This version of Moxxi will have some ties to Cate Blanchett‘s Lilith meaning they might explore her history with the Hodunk Clan. Whichever direction they decide to take with this character, she will make for a great addition when they will bring this character to life on the silver screen when the film premieres next year.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘BLACK ADAM’ Looks to Explore the Origins of Doctor Fate

EXCLUSIVE: ‘BLACK ADAM’ Looks to Explore the Origins of Doctor Fate

Production on the long-awaited Dwayne Johnson superhero vehicle Black Adam is set to get underway in Atlanta this April and as the start date draws nearer, director Jaume Collet-Serra is looking to round out the cast. Our first look at the film at DC Fandome teased Teth-Adam’s slave origins in ancient Khandaq and a new casting search indicates the film might be spending quite a bit of time exploring Adam’s origins.

Get Your First Look At Black Adam Concept Art And DC Fandome Panel Breakdown - The Illuminerdi

Black Adam is currently on the hunt for what appears to be a young version of Johnson’s Teth-Adam along with characters who would appear to be his father and another warrior from the time period. Additionally, the production is looking an actor to portray a magician described as a “powerful being prepared to do what they must to protect the world.” Given the time period the film is set to explore and the foundations it is expected to lay, it’s HIGHLY probable that Black Adam will introduce Nabu to the DC Universe.

DC Teases Return of Doctor Fate

Nabu is an incredibly ancient and powerful cosmic entity whose spirit is contained in the Helmet of Fate, the magical artifact worn by those taking up the mantle of Doctor Fate. Nabu prophesied the arrival of a Thangarian ship to Earth and was with Black Adam and Khufu, the Egyptian prince whose soul was eventually reincarnated as Carter Hall, aka Hawkman, when they discovered the ship and the Nth metal. The pieces all fall into place nicely for Black Adam to serve as an origin story for Adam, Hawkman and Doctor Fate.

Black Adam, originally set for a December 2021 release, is still without a new release date.

  • What I Heard This Week: James Gunn and ‘Krypto’

What I Heard This Week: James Gunn and ‘Krypto’

When James Gunn and Marvel Studios parted ways in mid-2018, it wasn’t long before the director found himself in talks with Warner Bros. to develop one of their DC properties. Gunn eventually chose The Suicide Squad, which is headed to theaters this summer. That decision led to the development of the HBO Max streaming series Peacemaker, starring John Cena, which is currently filming. While Gunn and Marvel Studios reconnected on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will begin production later this year, it seems that the director has already started thinking about what’s next. During a fan Q&A on Instagram, Gunn teased that he’s testing the waters of his next DC project for Warner Bros.

As is the case with all the information in our “What I Heard This Week” pieces, this information should be taken as an unverified rumor. For us, that means that I was not able to confirm it with a second source. In this case, given that it involves Gunn who is incredibly interactive with rumors on social media, we’ll know very soon how valid it is. That having been said, I’ve been told that the project that Gunn is dipping his toe in is Krypto. Though this is JUST a rumor, it checks a lot of boxes as far as believability. In a 2019 THR Heat Vision newsletter, the trade mentioned that one of the original DC properties that Gunn considered creating for Warner was Superman. During his research, Gunn took an interest in Krypto:

When Warners was courting Gunn, the studio gave him his pick of properties, including Superman. Though Gunn never got far enough along to seriously consider tackling a Superman movie, the filmmaker did take a shine to the Man of Steel’s superpowered dog Krypto during his comics research — which makes sense for a man who turned a talking raccoon into one of Marvel’s most popular big screen characters.

Gunn revisiting Krypto now makes a ton of sense. Those who follow Gunn on social media will recall that his beloved dog, Dr. Wesley Von Spears (who was the inspiration for the MCU version of Groot and appeared in both volumes of Guardians of the Galaxy) passed away just about a year ago while Gunn was filming The Suicide Squad. Production on the film was put on pause for a time so Gunn could come home to be with Von Spears, who had been a part of his life for 17 years. A year out from Von Spears’ passing, Gunn could be processing his feelings into a Krypto project that honors his longtime best friend.

Gunn himself says he’s just got “one toe dipped in” the project and, in the same IG chat mentioned above, he stated he has no plans after he completes work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. With Gunn looking for some downtime following Vol. 3, this is something that, should it move forward, wouldn’t be headed to production until next year, allowing for plenty of time to go through the writing process and determine if he’s committed to the project. Many projects that begin development never make it to the screen but given Gunn’s previous interest in the property, his love for dogs and his own personal experiences, this is one of the more believable things I’ve heard this week.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Russo Bros.’ Production for Netflix’s ‘The Gray Man’ Set After Delays

EXCLUSIVE: Russo Bros.’ Production for Netflix’s ‘The Gray Man’ Set After Delays

We are only a few days away when Joe and Anthony Russo‘s next major film, Cherry, releases on Apple TV+. It is their first film since their work on Avengers: Endgame that will see them tackle a more intimate story of a young man, played by Tom Holland, going down a dark path. The two aren’t going to take a break, as the directing duo is already eyeing the next blockbuster project, The Gray Man. The film is described as Netflix’s most ambitious feature film, which will see Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in the leading roles. The last time we heard anything from the production was in July, as the film was eyeing a January production start. However, we have exclusively learned that the film is facing a production delay.

Originally, it was going to start shooting the film in January, but it was delayed until March or April. They are currently still casting for the film, but no details are given for the delay. The production start was already delayed for two weeks back in December due to the rise of COVID concerns, so it is most likely why it was given another two to three months.

The story is an adaptation of the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney, where a deadly duel where the former CIA operative Gosling‘s Gentry is hunted by his former cohort Lloyd Hansen, who is played by Evans. The film’s script was written by Joe Russo with some polish by their Captain America and Avengers co-writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It will be produced by their production house AGBO.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘Succession’ Actor Arian Moayed Cast in ‘Spider-Man 3’

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Succession’ Actor Arian Moayed Cast in ‘Spider-Man 3’

Murphy’s Multiverse has learned that Iranian born American actor/writer/director Arian Moayed was cast in Spider-Man 3. Moayed is probably most known for his role in 2 seasons of the harrowing HBO family business drama Succession. In the series, he gives a compelling performance as Kendall Roy’s old friend Stewy Hosseini.

Details on his role in Spider-Man 3 are slim at this time though I was able to learn he is portraying a detective and has already filmed some scenes.

Moayed was previously nominated for a Tony award for his role in Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. Other appearances on television and film include Madame Secretary, Rock the Kasbah, Elementary, The Blacklist, and Law and Order.

Mr. Moayed recently wrote and directed the thriller The Accidental Wolf for streaming service Topic and will appear on the upcoming Netflix limited series Inventing Anna, which is expected in 2021.

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Cobra Kai’ and ‘Deadpool’ Writers Teaming up for ‘Twisted Metal’

Sony is moving ahead with its adaptation of Playstation’s Twisted Metal with some high profile names behind the project. We have learned that Cobra Kai writer Michael Jonathan Smith will serve as the showrunner and lead writer for the series. Smith will also serve as one of the executive producers for Twisted Metal and will team up with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writing duo behind both Deadpool and Zombieland films!

Smith served as a staff writer for 10 episodes of Cobra Kai during the hit show’s first season before becoming the story editor for the last 2 seasons. He also served as the story editor for the Disney Plus streaming series, Diary of a Future President. Described as a high-octane action-comedy in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, Twisted Metal will follow a “motor-mouthed outsider” trying to deliver a mysterious package while avoiding the wild array of marauders and their “vehicles of destruction”, including the famous ice cream truck driven by Sweet Tooth. As reported by the Illuminderi yesterday, Will Arnett has been cast in the role of Sweet Tooth. Arnett is also helping produce the series.

  • What We Heard This Week: The Villain of ‘INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2’

What We Heard This Week: The Villain of ‘INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2’

The complicated notion of the Multiverse has long been a staple in high-concept fiction but in the world of comic book films, it was only until the last couple of years that the idea became a lucrative prospect, when it culminated in the box-office and critical success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The film was Sony’s rare diamond in a consistent streak of roughs so it came as no surprise that a sequel was put in the works shortly after. Since then, we haven’t heard much about the sequel until this week when a source tipped us off to the identity of one of the sequel’s key baddies: obscure Spider-Man and Daredevil villain, The Spot.

For the uninitiated, The Spot is one of those obscure Spidey villains who occasionally showed up here and there to terrorize the likes of Spidey and DD with his goofy yet powerful abilities. The Spot has the ability to access and manipulate portals in any space (drawn as spots in the comics) which he uses to transport himself or any part of his body. He commonly uses it to have his foes punch their own faces or to assault them from all directions but it has oftentimes been used for more sinister purposes. In Mark Waid’s Daredevil run, the Spot appeared in a key role, wherein his power gets harnessed by another villain called Coyote, who then uses it to operate a global human trafficking empire by kidnapping victims remotely. The science behind his powers is never fully explained but they mimic some of Cloak’s ability to access a different dimension. The potential of his abilities is also beyond what’s been depicted so far, not to mention he has close ties with Kingpin so he’s absolutely a perfect fit should this be true.

As always our What We Heard This Week reports, take this with a grain of salt. We’re working with a new source on this and have yet to confirm this with another source as of this writing but thought it was exciting enough to share with you guys. We certainly believe that a character with ties to Spider-Man who has powers like The Spot makes so much sense to incorporate in the Spider-Verse sequel. Production on the sequel began last summer and it is expected to hit theaters on October 7, 2022.

  • What I Heard This Week: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

What I Heard This Week: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

As has always been the case, “What I Heard This Week” pieces should never be taken as more than rumors until they’re proven true or false.

Hollywood has gone on holiday and as is the case every year, the information stream has slowed to a trickle. New is always slow this time of year and while I don’t have any solid news to share with you, there is one really fun rumor that might get fans buzzing and generate some interesting conversation. Again, this is only an unsubstantiated rumor at this time, not some fuego scoopage. If it turns out to be true, however, it could lead to Marvel Studios collaborating with a big-time, fan-favorite talent down the road. So before going any further, adjust your expectations because this one tidbit comes without context.

7500': Amazon Wins Global Rights To Joseph Gordon-Levitt Movie – Deadline

Early on Christmas morning, I was notified that the uber-talented Joseph Gordon-Levitt had recently been in contact with at least one of the creatives at Marvel Studios. Unfortunately, as the kids say: “That’s it. That’s the tweet.” Given the lack of specific context here, “contact” could mean a lot of things. He could have bumped into someone at a coffee shop; he could have had a meeting with Kevin Feige; he could have sent a “Happy Holidays” text to a producer buddy of his. We just don’t know, which is why I cautioned you to adjust your expectations; however, there’s no point in being a fan if you don’t speculate wildly about what this COULD mean.

In an industry loaded with talent, JGL stands out as uniquely talented. The 39-year old has been acting since he was 7 and has also branched out into writing, directing, producing and even composing film scores. Therefore, being in contact with the studio doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to see Gordon-Levitt bring a hero or villain to life on the screen. It’s just as likely that, if he were to join the team at Marvel Studios, that his contributions come off-screen.

    MARVEL - MOON KNIGHT

Gordon-Levitt was frequently fancast as Marc Spector, the vigilante hero that the trades have reported is set to be played by Oscar Isaac in Moon Knight, but that doesn’t mean that JGL couldn’t still contribute to the series in some way. The Jewish-American actor could easily be brought in to work with the writers to contribute to the authenticity of the script, have another role in the series (perhaps he could play Marc’s father, Elias, for instance) or simply be consulting on the project in some other way.

Of course, the more tantalizing potential here is that JGL met with Marvel Studios to discuss the role of Reed Richards in Marvel Studios Fantastic Four, set to be directed by Jon Watts. After spending a couple of years away from acting following the birth of his children, Gordon-Levitt has worked on only a couple of projects per year the last two years and could be compelled to throw his hat in the ring for the role of Richards, one that will likely secure a decade’s worth of work as Mr. Fantastic is sure to become one of the MCU’s prominent characters in 2023 and beyond. JGL is among the most popular fan choices for the character, but keep in mind that this is nothing but sexy speculation here since we do not know the nature of the interaction he had with the Marvel Studios creative.

Ultimate Reed Richards: 10 Worst Things The Maker Has Done, Ranked

Going even further down the rabbit hole, Gordon-Levitt, who would be a very young-looking 40 or 41 by the time Fantastic Four went into production, resembles the Ultimate Reed Richards far more than he does the 616 version of the character. While I am not a fan of taking Richards down that road in the MCU, there is at least some physical similarity there; however, if Feige and Watts want to make sure their Fantastic Four stands apart from the previous versions, taking Richards down the road to becoming the Maker would do it.

    107. And Now-The Thing - Fantastic Four 1 by 1Fantastic Four 1 by 1

Alternatively, JGL could also prove an interesting choice for another member of Marvel’s First Family: Ben Grimm. Before being exposed to cosmic rays and turning into the giant, orange Thing, Grimm was a handsome, athletic and highly intelligent guy who grew up on Yancy Street in a Jewish family. While he’s been portrayed as less than intelligent in some mediums, Grimm was an Air Force pilot and astronaut and far from a bumbling fool. Whether via flashbacks or due to the “human once a year serum” developed by Reed, we could see a human Grimm in the film played by Gordon-Levitt who could also do the motion-capture performance of the Thing. Again, it’s all just speculation at the moment, but that’s part of the fun of being a fan.

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel HQ to Premiere Kids-Targeted ‘ETERNALS’ Animated Series in 2021

Murphy’s Multiverse has learned that Star India’s Marvel HQ is planning to release an Eternals animated series early in 2021. While we can’t confirm it for a U.S. release, Marvel HQ’s content often mirrors that of Disney XD.

Eternals: Marvel Reveals New Ongoing Series From Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribic - IGN

Marvel loves its corporate synergy and is getting the Eternals into the limelight. A Kieron Gillen scribed Eternals comic book is set to debut in January of 2021 and will be shortly followed by the new animated series which looks to introduce younger audiences to the MCU’s version of the Eternals ahead of next year’s Marvel Studios feature film, currently set to hit theaters on November 5th, 2021.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Cox is Back as Daredevil in ‘SPIDER-MAN 3’

EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Cox is Back as Daredevil in ‘SPIDER-MAN 3’

Daredevil is about to be reborn in the MCU. That’s the latest bombshell we’ve heard from several of our trusted sources. Now that Netflix shows are toast, Kevin Feige finally has his chance to envision the characters to fit his ever-growing sandbox of a multi-platformed universe. Murphy’s Multiverse has learned that Charlie Cox, star of the beloved Netflix show, is set to make his grand debut in the MCU in the third Spider-Man film in a deal that has been set in stone for several months now.

Cox spoke with Comicbook.com last April and due to the rampant fan theories of Matt Murdock helping Peter Parker get out of his conundrum, was asked if he had any involvement with Spider-Man 3, an idea he denied at the time. What happens beyond that appearance wasn’t elaborated to us but any logical person would think that a series is slated at some point in the MCU’s future. Unfortunately, Cox seems like the only figure salvaged from the Netflix wreckage at the moment so any hope of seeing the rest of the cast is up in the air. But yeah, Daredevil got saved.

This was inevitable: Daredevil was always going to end up in Feige’s box of toys. The big question that surrounded the character’s official MCU debut was when and on what platform. With reports of a Hulu and Disney+ merger circulating the web, a fresh Daredevil show with the Marvel Studios brand attached to is certainly a good way to debut that service. Marvel Studios is keen on thoroughly exploring the street side of the MCU and a chunk of their slate reflects that. You’ve got Blade, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and even Ms. Marvel; shows that skew towards smaller “everyman” type of stories that reflect the day-to-day of the MCU citizens and not its gods, spies, and billionaires.

Matt Murdock’s alter ego recently trended on social media as the 2-year no-use clause on the character put up by Netflix came to an end. With an investor’s meeting come up in a few days, it’s possible that this show could be one of those revealed. Several weeks back, Marvel Studios created a bunch of new production companies for their upcoming properties. LLCs named Grass-Fed, Standoffish, Frequent, Log Jam, and Blueberry Waffles were the names Murphy’s Multiverse uncovered. While we still do not know which specific properties these LLCs are for, we do know these are greenlit projects that they’re beginning to work on. Daredevil could very well be one of these.
