  • ‘Returnal’ Adds New Survival Mode and Campaign Co-Op in a New Free Update

‘Returnal’ Adds New Survival Mode and Campaign Co-Op in a New Free Update

It looks like there are some big plans for Returnal, as the survival rogue-lite has revealed a new update that will not only feature a new survival mode but even a co-op campaign. The best part: it’ll be made available on March 22nd for those looking to return to the challenge and give it another go. It seems that the game will receive a new subtitle “Ascension” with the survival mode being in a mysterious tower.

Returnal was one of the biggest surprises for me and a definite PlayStation 5 experience with its loading times, action-packed adventure, and recurring challenge. Every time you die, you restart at the beginning of the game with barely any equipment left outside of a select few items the game lets you keep. The rogue-lite elements certainly add to its charm even if it’s not the best game if you’re just planning a quick gaming session due to the lack of a save function.

Still, the ability to play with a friend through the campaign may hopefully help players that are having a hard time to finally beat that one boss that has been holding them back from fully experiencing the game’s full story. It’ll be interesting how it also tackles the first-person moments that break the game’s pace for some sweet reprieve.

  • ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Retro Game Collection Announced

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Retro Game Collection Announced

If you’ve ever hoped to get your hands on some of the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, you’re in luck. During the latest PlayStation State of Play showcase, they have revealed a new collection of classic games from the franchise ranging back to the early Super Nintendo days. Not just that, it even includes the iconic Arcade game, Tournament Fighters, and a lot more. It’s the perfect collection ahead of the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. The game will release under the title The Cowabunga Collection, but no release date was named.

The game will include 13 titles in total. It’s great to see so many classic games finally put together in one collection, which will likely be quite the catch for fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ongoing ventures on video games. Sadly, it seems taht it still remains stuck in a retro-style environment, as there’s no plan for a venture back into 3D.

After the release of Batman: Arkham City, there were many rumors that Rocksteady Studios may be tackling a TMNT game but sadly it turned out many years later they’ve decided to venture back into the DC universe with Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League. Here’s hoping that the renewed interest may lead to it joining.

  • ‘Gotham Knights’ Finally Gets an October Release Date

‘Gotham Knights’ Finally Gets an October Release Date

Before there is any confusion, the Gotham Knights in question is the game by Warner Bros. Montréal and not the CW series in production with the same name. It’s been quite the wait for the next entry in the Batman gaming franchise that was started by Rocksteady with Arkham Asylum. While Gotham Knights will take a different direction, many core elements from the teams’ experience on Arkham Origins will carry over. Players will get a chance to try it out when it releases on the 25th of October 2022.

The game, as far as we know, will let you play as Red Hood, Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl. We got our first gameplay during the first-ever DC FanDome, which teased a brawler-style game where you can freely explore a neon-take on Gotham. There are elements from the original Arkham series that are included, but still, try to take a different approach that fits the younger members of the Bat-family. The only confirmed threats are Mr. Freeze and the Court of Owl, who might have closer ties to the sudden death of Bruce Wayne. This is our first real update on the game in quite some time. So, hopefully, they can stick to this new release date.

  • Square-Enix’s ‘Forspoken’ Delayed to October

    Square-Enix’s ‘Forspoken’ Delayed to October

It has been a bit rough for Square-Enix as of late, as the reception for its latest release Babylon Falls has been quite rough. A lot of hope was put on the upcoming release of Forspoken, by Luminous productions, but it looks like we’ll have to wait quite a bit longer. The team took to Twitter to announce that their upcoming game won’t release until October 11th, 2022 instead of its original May release window.

Nowadays, it’s not uncommon that games face productions delay due to COVID forcing many to work from home. The delay by half a year is a bit rough, but it does give the creative team more time to figure some elements out, work on bugs, and optimize as much as possible. Forspoken promises an open-world experience filled with magic, which might also require a lot of fine-tuning with its difficulty curve.

The last trailer did include some action which still looked rough around the edges. So, a delay might be there to help the team add in the finishing touches as much as they need it. The game still looks quite promising and here’s hoping that it’ll stick to its October release and doesn’t face any last-minute delays.

  • ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Game Did Not Meet Square-Enix’s Sales Expectations

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Game Did Not Meet Square-Enix’s Sales Expectations

Well, this story sounds familiar. Square-Enix has revealed in its earnings report that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy from Eidos Montréal has fallen short of its sales expectations. Some might recall, there was a similar issue with the launch of Marvel’s Avengers back in 2019. There’s a curious trend with Square’s Western produced releases facing some curious sales issues, especially if you look back to the Tomb Raider franchise that is now under their Western production houses.

Also, similar to with Avengers back in the day, they are positive that the game will manage to make up for its low early sales at a later point. IT’s only drawback is that it isn’t a Games-as-a-Service model, which helped support Crystal Dynamic’s Marvel venture to continue growing since its initial launch. The report, as shared by VG Chartz is as followed:

The HD Games sub-segment launched Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in Q3. Despite strong reviews, the game’s sales on launch undershot our initial expectations. However, sales initiatives that we kicked off in November 2021 and continued into the new year have resulted in sales growth, and we intend to work to continue to expand sales to make up for the title’s slow start.

Sadly, it really seems like Square-Enix has a problem marketing its projects effectively, especially when it comes to their Western productions. They are still synonymous with Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and so much more. Yet, one of the biggest brands in the world is struggling under their umbrella while Insomniac’s games seem to strive. Of course, Spider-Man is a very different beast from a marketing standpoint but it is still curious. There’s also the issue that Square constantly overpredicts its sales, as in 2013 alone three of their Western productions sold far below their expectations. We’ll see if we hear more and get an announcement on a potential sequel in the near future.

  • RUMOR: ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ RPG and MMORPG in Development

RUMOR: ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ RPG and MMORPG in Development

Avatar: The Last Airbender has quite a few big years ahead. Netflix is working on a live-action series, Nickelodeon formed a new production studio that primarily focuses on the franchise, and it looks like a new rumor is hinting that some more games are also in some form of development. Avatar News, who have shared some insights on various projects in the past, has revealed that not one but four projects are currently in development.

The big news story is that one of the projects is hinted at as a “console RPG” but it’s uncertain what the gameplay style might end up being. Action RPGs are quite popular and would fit the universe, but it’s uncertain if they might go a similar route to Hogwarts Legacy, but they believe that it may include characters from the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series.

The second project is an MMORPG. No more details could be shared, but it seems these projects have been in development for some time. These two projects joined one mystery title and the Square-Enix mobile game that was announced some time ago. If the rumor is to believe, we might get more details in the near future as they might be quite far into development at this point.

I have high hopes for an RPG in this universe, especially if you can master different types of bending. A high-budget action RPG would be a fitting game addition as you start to master the different techniques. They don’t know who might be involved with the projects, but there are definitely some studios that would offer a fantastic game based on the franchise. So, here’s hoping that announcement truly is just around the corner.

  • ‘Mario Strikers’ Finally Returns with New Nintendo Switch Entry titled ‘Battle League’

‘Mario Strikers’ Finally Returns with New Nintendo Switch Entry titled ‘Battle League’

At this point, the Nintendo Switch has become the home for almost every Nintendo classic at this point. Metroid made its grand return after a long bit of silence. Fire Emblem got one of its best entries to date. Even cult classics like Advance Wars are finding their way to the console. Nintendo wasn’t quite done with that as they also unveiled a long-awaited sequel to Mario Strikers with the subtitle Battle League. You can check the first trailer here:

The gameplay looks promising as most of the mayhem is still at play in the game. Plus, the gear system looks like a promising addition for those that want to try out new things to create their favorite team. Also, someone really had too much fun tackling poor Luigi into that electric fence.

  • New ‘Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp’ Trailer Confirms April Release

New ‘Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp’ Trailer Confirms April Release

Finally, after a long bout of silence, the upcoming remake of the classic Gameboy Advance series Advance Wars got an update in the latest Nintendo Direct. Advance Wars 1 + 2 Reboot Camp revealed that every commanding officer has received full voice work, and even teased how the game will handle the inclusion of both games.

The addition of fast-forwarding gameplay and even resetting turns is an amazing addition for players that may struggle in later levels. Custom Maps also make a return thankfully and the addition of Online multiplayer might be one of the best additions to just add that replayability once you finish the campaign. The game will release on April 8th and it’ll be exciting to get our hands on this Nintendo classic.

  • ‘The Book of Boba Fett’s Krrsantan and Fennec Shand to Join ‘Fortnite’

‘The Book of Boba Fett’s Krrsantan and Fennec Shand to Join ‘Fortnite’

Here’s a pleasant surprise ahead of The Book of Boba Fett‘s finale, as it looks like that besides the titular former bounty hunter, we’ll also get Fortnite skins for Fennec Shand and the show’s new addition in the form of Krrsantan. You can check out the first look as shared early by @iFireMonkey:

They also shared the new image that is being used to promote the two character’s additions with Boba Fett lurking in the background. It seems that they don’t have a loading screen currently, but could end up getting added later on.

That’s not all, as it seems that Ming-Na Wen’s Fennec Shand gets her own teaser trailer with a small cameo from The Mandalorian and his iconic line “This is the way!”.

    https://twitter.com/iFireMonkey/status/1491200544303890436

The designs look great and fans of the Disney+ series will definitely check out the additions. It’s crazy to think how big Shand’s role was since her minor appearance in the first season of The Mandalorian, but it just shows how any character can grow if given enough time. Krrsantan is also a great addition, especially with him finally making his way into live-action after being introduced through comics. We’ll see who else might get added in the near future.
