  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Announces Mighty Thor as Next Hero DLC

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Announces Mighty Thor as Next Hero DLC

It’s been quite the wait, but the latest development update by Marvel#s Avengers has given us quite the surprise. It has been rumored for a bit, but the announcement has finally arrived that the next character joining the project will end up being Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor. We even got our first look at the character, which sadly only gives us a glimpse at her upcoming design.

She won’t be part of the upcoming patch 2.4, which will release sometime in May but is the main focus of 2.5. She’ll also wield Mjolnir and have some common abilities like the current version of Thor but still have some distinct elements to make her stand out. They will offer a better look at the character and more details soon.

In regards to update 2.4, it’ll be a way to help solo players to grind to higher levels. Events will get reworked in a way that adds new goals for players and helps with the newly improved game loop from 2.3. So, Crystal Dynamics has put in a lot of work in the current model to ease in new players while also ensuring future updates will have more to offer for players.

So, those looking for ways to grind and don’t want to be dependent on multiplayer options with Omega-Level Threats or Raids now have an option. While there was still quite a wait for their latest playable character, it’s still great to see the game getting continued support from its developer.

  • First Visual for ‘Sonic Origins’ Accidentally Leaks Early

First Visual for ‘Sonic Origins’ Accidentally Leaks Early

Sonic the Hedgehog is enjoying a renaissance with a new title Sonic Frontier on the horizon that may be our first venture into the open world for the Blue Blur. That’s not all, as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has also released in theaters to quite a lot of fanfare and has become the best performing video game adaptation of all time. Well, it looks like the news isn’t quite over yet as after a rating in South Korea teased a new game titled Sonic Origins, the CDN server of PlayStation accidentally leaked the first visual and logo for the upcoming game compilation. @TailsChannel has shared the first look, which you can check out here:

The visual looks great and really brings back that era of Sonic’s earliest games. It’ll be interesting to see what games end up being included but going by the visual it seems that they will include the original trilogy and Sonic CD. We’re still waiting for the long-rumored Sonic Adventure remakes, as this isn’t the first anthology of the original Sega Genesis games. So, here’s hoping that its release might open up to the other rumored remakes also getting released at some point as well. Still, the visual is great and it’s nice to have a confirmation that this is indeed happening after there were some rumors making the rounds.

  • ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ to Revive the Popular Reaction Command

‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ to Revive the Popular Reaction Command

Kingdom Hearts 4 has just recently been announced with a teaser trailer showcasing the new design direction. As Sora has found himself in a new world that was first teased in the third game’s Re:Mind DLC and later would be revealed to have the name Quadratum. Not just that, we even got some gameplay that teased some familiar and new elements, such as Sora summoning a drill out of energy. The button prompt did catch some veterans’ eyes and it didn’t take long for Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of the franchise, to confirm that it is indeed Kingdom Hearts 2‘s “reaction command.”

Nomura confirmed its return in an interview with Famitsu and highlighted that the drill-ability seen in the Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer was indeed a reaction command input and that it was connected to the moment the enemy was charging up its punch. As we didn’t see the triangle button showcased in the trailer, there were theories it might include different button prompts, but he highlighted that it was “simply because we have not announced which models are compatible with it.”

Its return was the result of fan outcry of its absence in the last entry. The second entry made the action command a popular addition, as it involved Sora using the abilities of his enemies against them. Kingdom Hearts 3 took a different route by having special abilities and interactions with the environment connected to the same button. It was originally removed due to complaints it made the game too easy but ended up being highly requested after it was removed. So, many fans might be excited to see its return.

  • ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s Next-Gen Upgrades Have Been Delayed Indefinitely

‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s Next-Gen Upgrades Have Been Delayed Indefinitely

More problems seem to have arrived at The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red. The studio has been working to better the catastrophic release of 2077 while also working on bringing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. They’ve just recently announced the fourth entry in their Witcher series, but it looks like they are facing a few issues managing their various projects.

Announced today via Twitter, it seems that the next-generation upgrades of The Witcher 3 are being delayed out of their Q2 2022 release window in order for CD Projekt Red to take development in-house and finish up the project with their first-party development studio. Previously, the studio was working with outside talent in order to get the game on the new consoles. This is certainly not abnormal for the game industry, development studios and publishers are constantly working by outsourcing some of their work to other dev teams to quicken the development process.

This time, however, it appears CDPR either didn’t like the work that was being completed or possibly felt that they could do it faster. Of course, the real reason for this change is unknown, but we can only assume something happened to cause this change in path, especially considering that the bulk of CDPR is still working on fixing Cyberpunk 2077 as well as beginning pre-production on the new Witcher title.

CD Projekt Red went from being one of the top developers in the world, entrusted by gamers to deliver quality products with pro-consumer interests at heart to being considered a mixed bag after the devastating blow that was Cyberpunk’s release. The team has been doing a lot to fix their reputation, and hopefully, this change to The Witcher 3’s development is another step in regaining the trust of gamers that they previously had.

  • RUMOR: ‘Among Us VR’ May Be Eyeing a November Release

RUMOR: ‘Among Us VR’ May Be Eyeing a November Release

There’s nothing like a game that lets you stab your friends in the back and lie to them just like Among Us. What started with a quiet release would grow into one of the biggest games of the last year. Then, it was announced back in December that the hit game was getting the virtual reality treatment. We haven’t heard much since but it looks like the game might finally have a release date due to a posting on SteamDB.

For those that might be wondering what SteamDB is: it is simply a reporting tool that takes information from the online storefront of Steam, posts all of the information uploaded to the service, and lists it in a handy database for us to view. The site has consistently posted pretty reliable information, from unknown release dates to unknown games. Ever since it launched, the service has been giving tidbits to gamers for years now.

Found in the files recently was a listing for Among Us VR with a release date of November 10, 2022. The game has made huge waves in gaming, going from a small indie game ready to release a second title, and ending up as an expanding love service that was able to find success on PC, Consoles, and Mobile. The game is ripe for VR content, between its simple concept to its “keeping you busy” type tasks, the game should certainly translate to VR.

Among Us might be one of the biggest surprise hits in gaming history. As a result of an uptick in content creators playing the game during the pandemic, the game went from being almost a write-off to a very successful property. The game, toys, and even online media have made the IP grow exponentially, and with VR continuing to grow, especially with the likes of the Meta Quest 2 and PSVR2, I feel the game will certainly have a long life in VR.

  • Gearbox’s Parent Company Embracer Group Plans to Continue Acquisition Spree

Gearbox’s Parent Company Embracer Group Plans to Continue Acquisition Spree

The acquisition wars in the gaming industry continue. In a new norm where IP and top-tier studios are being snatched up like candy on Halloween, it seems no independent studio is safe anymore. Microsoft and Sony are certainly the big players in the space currently, and they definitely aren’t the only ones trying to expand. Take-Two recently purchased mobile game company Zynga for $12.7 billion, Netflix has purchased two studios in the last month, and Embracer Group has completed over 60 acquisitions, big and large, since 2020.

As it stands, Embracer Group has spent more than $8 billion on acquisitions. This is noteworthy as a brand most people have never heard of has suddenly become one of the biggest players in gaming today. Between Gearbox Software (Borderlands), Deep Silver (Saints Row), THQ Nordic (Destroy All Humans), and Saber Interactive (World War Z, Witcher 3), the holding company has managed to secure some of the most recognized AA studios in existence.

Not only that, but they also have managed to acquire some big-name IP that will certainly bolster their portfolio. While they won’t own The Witcher 3 as Saber was just a port house for the project, they did secure Borderlands, one of the largest IPs in gaming today. The CEO of the company recently said that this wasn’t the end. Lars Wingefors has said in an interview that he plans to make a similar number of acquisitions in the upcoming months and years.

While the company continues to look at the gaming industry for new opportunities, game studios aren’t the only companies the group has looked at. Embracer recently bought Dark Horse Comics for an undisclosed sum. So while any studio may be in the crosshairs, Embracer is definitely diversifying its portfolio, meaning your favorite studios may be able to hold out for now.

  • REVIEW: ‘Weird West’ Is Not So Immersive

REVIEW: ‘Weird West’ Is Not So Immersive

For all its immersive sim flourishes, Weird West falls short of being the engrossing experience it promises to be. A repetitive gameplay loop, a cast of playable characters with little to no distinction from one another, clunky combat, and a tedious quest system all make Weird West an underwhelming experience.

Developed by the creators of the Dishonored and Prey games under their new company Wolfeye Studios, Weird West is a supernatural reenvisioning of the American myths of the Wild West. Werewolves, sorcerers, zombies, wendigos, and other monstrosities inhabit this unruly land but it’s also not without your cowboys, gunslingers, trappers, and outlaws. The player is given the reigns of 5 different characters whose stories intersect in some form. You play as a bounty hunter, a human-turned-pig man, an archer, a werewolf, and a witch in that order.

Such distinct characters would normally offer players diversified experiences but Weird West struggles to make these experiences unique. The game makes the questionable choice of allowing these characters to play very similarly. With the exception of a handful of unique skills, all characters have the same skill trees and the same access to weapons. So the werewolf can be a gunslinger if the player wishes it so, which sounds like a fun idea. However, the problem lies in how imbalanced the two systems are. A lot of the character-unique skills aren’t that particularly interesting, efficient, or economical to use. That inefficiency is oftentimes due to the clunky combat which has a severe lack of depth. So using weapons becomes the most viable option available for the moment-to-moment gameplay which in turn makes every character feel the same.

The gameplay loop sees players traveling from map marker to map marker to go on fetch quests they need to progress the story. There’s the occasional ambush, raid, and stealth quest but similar to the skills system, there’s a lot to be desired with these encounters. The game’s stealth mechanics aren’t responsive and oftentimes succumb to the game’s jank, leaving players better off just shooting their way through a stealth mission. As for the level design, players will see a lot of copy-pasted levels throughout their journey. So much of the world is made up of unmemorable towns, temples, and outposts. For a world that’s crawling with all kinds of life, the Weird West feels empty.

Where Weird West redeems itself is in the way it unravels its own tale. For all the numbing similarities the characters’ gameplay share, their individual stories all have a heft to them. Each facet of the story offers players a perspective yet to be experienced. Clashing political factions, warring faiths, and stories of revenge are some of the point of views to be taken. And because this is an immersive sim, players have the freedom to mold how these stories pan out. Major NPCs can be killed on a whim as well as the characters you control. Decisions impact the world on a frequent basis. Kill everyone on every outpost and soon the West becomes a wasteland. Rack up a bad reputation and everyone turns on you on sight. Kill a wanted fugitive and their posse swears revenge on you. Make the wrong decision and the next character you play will have a harder time in the West.

Sadly, Weird West fails to make the cut in joining the pantheon of great immersive sims. Even with the dev team’s pedigree, the game’s great art style, ambitious worldbuilding, and homages to old-school CRPGs, players might be better off waiting for this one to go on sale.

  • ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ Announced During 20th Anniversary Event, New Key Art Released

‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ Announced During 20th Anniversary Event, New Key Art Released

It’s been a long wait for fans of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, but the big event has finally taken place. Many were hoping to see some kind of announcement on the franchise’s future after it took a vow of silence in 2021. Once the doors opened to the Japan-exclusive event, some have been sharing pictures from the event and it seems that the key art of the event gave us our first tease of a fourth entry in the franchise.

While some doubted if the visual is actually teasing the fourth entry, even if the placement and showcase of Sora counting down with his various costumes seemed like an obvious hint. Luckily, it seems an announcement was done behind closed doors, but luckily @aitaikimochi shared some insights into what the announcement included.

Shortly after, the official Kingdom Hearts account dropped the full trailer including all the announcements for the event, which offers our first glimpse at a very different version of the franchise taking place within Quadratum.

It looks like quite the departure from what we’ve seen from the franchise so far, especially with a completely revamped art style and the modern setting hinted at by the Re:Mind DLC’s secret boss. We even get a glimpse of combat that remains a bit flowing but with more interactive elements. It also seems like it might be moving away from visiting multiple worlds but focusing on one singular location. So, perhaps Kingdom Hearts 4 is an open-world game. For now, that is sadly all we know.

  • Remedy Announces Remakes of the Original 2 ‘Max Payne’ Games

Remedy Announces Remakes of the Original 2 ‘Max Payne’ Games

Remakes continue to be all the rage these days, as some iconic franchises are making their return to a new console generation. Yet, in a surprising move, it seems like one more iconic franchise is making its return, as Remedy and Rockstar Games have announced that they are now working on remaking not only the original Max Payne but also Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne.

The announcement seemingly came out of nowhere, as Remedy is working together with Rockstar Games for a new publishing agreement. They plan to release the remakes for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. They highlighted that it will be of the same quality as their usual AAA output so far. It’ll be developed with their Northlight game engine, which they also are using on the upcoming Alan Wake 2 release and their critically acclaimed Control.

Rockstar’s Sam Houser had the following to say on the cooperation:

We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games. We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years and we can’t wait to play these new versions.

    Sam Houser

There’s no set release date, especially as they seemingly just started production on the project. The developer is still busy preparing the release of Alan Wake 2, which also doesn’t have a specific release date as of now. So, we might have to wait a little longer for any update.

  • Long-Rumored ‘Rainbow Six Mobile’ Finally Confirmed

Long-Rumored ‘Rainbow Six Mobile’ Finally Confirmed

It’s almost time for Rainbow Six fans to take the fight from their TVs and monitors to their mobile phones. After countless leaks, rumors, and other discussions floating around, the game was a terribly-kept secret. However, event after event, no news would come. Finally, Ubisoft has confirmed the game, which is being developed by a new team based out of Montreal.

The game was built from the ground up as the team has promised fans that their team will be staffed up and ready to support the game for a long time. While the game seems to look a lot like Rainbow Six Siege, the game was definitely built with the new device in mind, taking the 5v5 tactical gameplay fans love but letting them enjoy it on the go.

The final confirmation isn’t all, as Ubisoft will be running multiple live tests for the game over the upcoming weeks to get ready for the official release. We don’t know quite yet what they might change throughout production to accommodate the new format. Mobile games also are more fast-paced due to players being on the road. So, we should expect some changes going from the regular version to mobile, but that’s not uncommon.
