REVIEW: ‘Souldiers’ Is A Promising, Punishing Metroidvania

Whether it was intentional or not, the latest Metroidvania from 6-man team Retro Forge, Souldiers, has a strong JRPG essence that permeates it. Despite being a self-described Souls-like Metroidvania, nearly everything about is begging to be presented in turn-based combat. Its aesthetic harkens back to the old-school JRPG games from the 90s. Its sense of high-fantasy adventure echoes that of Dragon Quest and the original Final Fantasy. And you might as well as slap JRPG veteran Nobu Uematsu’s name on Souldier’s music. All this isn’t to say that Souldiers is better off as a completely different game. It’s to recognize how much of a love-letter Souldiers is to adventure stories of yore.

You play as one of three unnamed soldiers who, along with the rest of their battalion, are suddenly transported into the afterlife by mysterious Valkyries. With the help of the surviving soldiers, your goal is to find out why you were transported into this unknown land between life and death in the first place and how to get back to your homeland. All this while traversing different biomes, solving puzzles, and fighting all kinds of creatures.

There are three soldiers to choose from. A scout, archer, and caster. Like any RPG, each soldier has their own set of attainable skills and comes with their own pros and cons. For example, the caster has low health but has a mid-ranged basic attack that homes in on enemies. The archer, on the other hand, has a full-ranged arrow attack that needs to be refilled when the arrows run out.

For better or worse, whichever character you pick will drastically alter your experience. Despite the game’s attempts to give each character equal footing, the punishing scenarios you are likely to find yourself in makes the experience feel unbalanced. You’re likely to run out of defensive and mobility options in a second when you run into a section where multiple enemies with unique attacks come at you at the same time. In the case of the caster, it’s a frequent scenario.

That sense of imbalance and difficulty make up the game’s Souls-like elements. Like any game of the same vein, the mechanics are designed to keep players constantly on their feet. You run out of stamina blocking and parrying. Anytime you use a save point respawns enemies in the area.  But unlike most of the good Souls-likes, Souldiers’ progression system doesn’t feel rewarding. It takes a long while for your character to amass a good number of skills as some enemies just don’t drop enough experience points. On top of that, the currency items are scarce and basic healing items too expensive.

Souls-likes are hard by design but they’re also very rewarding. You want to be rewarded with cool items for overcoming a tough fight or a tricky platforming section. Souldiers’ doesn’t quite feel satisfying or gratifying in its moment-to-moment gameplay. Its difficulty oftentimes feels questionable, with no engaging reason behind it other than to make a game hard.

This gets in the way of the fun as it takes a while for Souldiers’ best systems to open up. You spend the first couple of hours with only basic skills and little maneuverability. The platforming starts off as generic and uninspired. It isn’t until you invest roughly 10 hours and get to the third biome that the combat and platforming elements get fun. Combined with its conservative sense of progression, players will really have to commit to get the most out of Souldiers.

Despite these issues, Souldiers offers a depth of engagement with the most prominent being its combat system. There’s a lot to experiment with in Souldiers. One of the early skills acquired by the caster is the ability to automatically create a reflection anytime to you dodge. This reflection can be detonated, damaging all enemies nearby which add a layer of strategy to all your encounters. As the story progresses, you acquire the ability to imbue an element to your attacks which you can switch on a whim. Occasionally, these elemental attacks also serve platforming purposes.

Like most RPGs, items and weapons can be upgraded at a price. Secondary weapons such as throwable bombs, axes, and spears can get a small damage buff. However, one missing component is the ability to sell items. In a game where it takes some time to save enough money, being able to sell useless items should be allowed. As a Metroidvania, Souldiers meets the usual requirements. Maps are vast and intricately connected and are sometimes gated by specific skills. Sadly, the exploration isn’t as intuitive or exciting as Hollow Knight as there’s some handholding on where to go to advance the story. Nonetheless, it fulfills its purpose.

Solely through its beautifully rendered pixel art and the polished animation that gives it life, Souldiers bypasses all its flaws and manages to be a truly impressive piece of work. Pixelated colors of endless hues that pop on screen make up the detailed sprites of characters and landscapes. Every inch feels lively; even something as insignificant as the leaves in the background moves with the wind. Character stances look graceful and attack animations are brimming with style. Souldiers perfectly captures the visual essence of iconic anime-inspired 16-bit games.

For all its problems, Souldiers has an ambition that is commendable. It successfully commits to being a decent Metroidvania with a steep Souls-like difficulty while paying homage to its JRPG influences. If you’re looking for a challenging game that rouses nostalgia, Souldiers can’t be missed.

  • First Look at Canceled Marvel MMORPG’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse’ Inspired Design

First Look at Canceled Marvel MMORPG’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse’ Inspired Design

Daybreak has been trying to set up an MMORPG for Marvel for quite some time. They worked on it before it was eventually canceled, only to go through the entire process an additional time. We’ve long wondered what it was going to look like and many assumed it might be closer to what they’ve done on DC Universe Online. Yet, as shared by UI and Motion Designer, Ramiro Galan, it may have been quite a bit different than expected.

He took to his personal ArtStation to share concept art that was made, which was first shared on Reddit by u/LongJonSiIver. The designs were made by him, as they went for a stylistic design that would pay homage to Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. It also seems to have some Pixar influences given the 3D Model’s designs that are being showcased.

The designs are actually pretty nice, though it does seem interesting that the power selection and outfits are mostly just t-shirts and pants. So, it doesn’t seem like you could make your own superhero costume, but that might be something you unlock while playing the game. Of course, what would be fun is to see the designs of the iconic Marvel heroes The selection of teams might just be something they’ve added as a base, but I’d be down for a game as a SHIELD agent in the world filled with superheroes. We’ll see if an MMORPG concept manages to pick up speed at another date potentially.

  • SWCA: ‘Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’ Takes Place in the Same Year as ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi

SWCA: ‘Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’ Takes Place in the Same Year as ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi

Star Wars Celebration has given us a lot of teases of what’s to come for the franchise in television and books. Now, we also got a first look at Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The title has been teased for some time, as it leaked earlier in May, but we even got a trailer that confirms a 2023 release for the new entry. While we don’t get a good look at the game’s updated gameplay, a tease of whatever the hell the story is going to be, the official press release offers more insight.

Turns out, the game takes place five years after the original, which places it in the year 9BBY. The reason that is significant is that it’s the exact same year that the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place. Not only does it open the floodgates on Cal Kestus showing up in the series, but also confirms that the teased villain is very likely now who we think it is. Respawn’s Stig Asmussen also offers some insight into how they approached the story and why it got the subtitle Survivor.

That’s the purpose in the tone of it, is to leave the player with a lot of questions but they’re very intrigued. The game is all about survival. That’s why it’s called Jedi: Survivor. They are in dark times, and Cal and the crew are doing whatever it takes to stay alive. That might mean that they are making connections with people that, in other times, might be considered unsavory. Some of that is portrayed in the trailer, and again, I don’t want to give anything away, but there’s definitely a sense of… I don’t want to spoil anything, sorry! [Laughs.]Stig Asmussen

Speaking of how the timeline confirms the absence of a character. We see a member of the alien race known as Pau’an. Most might remember the character due to the character’s appearance in the animated series in the form of the Grand Inquisitor. He also just recently appeared in the live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi series where he is played by Rupert Friend. As it takes place around the same time, that means the one we meet in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is likely a new Pau’an, as he also lacks the iconic markings.

The trailer is quite promising, especially how it gives us a tease of a story that seems quite disconnected from the events of the first. Most of the supporting cast is oddly absent in the trailer, but with that title, it makes sense they want to keep us guessing on what exactly is heading our way.

  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Leak Offers First Look at Donny Cates-Inspired Thor Design

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Leak Offers First Look at Donny Cates-Inspired Thor Design

Marvel’s Avengers has made a splash in its own way in the gaming industry with its first attempt at a Games-as-a-Service for the Marvel brand. If it achieved its goal it is hotly discussed, we still got a variety of skins that harken not only to the Marvel Cinematic Universe but also their comic roots. It looks like one of Thor’s most famous costumes from recent years is making its way to the game soon, as leaked by @mmmmmmmmiller.

The design is definitely not an easy one to translate, especially with the details of the stars on his outfit. It seems they kept most of the armor and leg pieces from other designs but added the visually striking chest piece which may even have the glow from the comics. As it looks like an unfinished model, we have to take into account that it’ll very likely still go through some tweaks.

It’s been great seeing the team expand with more comic-inspired designs, as many were quite focused on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ll soon also get the addition of Jane Foster’s Thor who’ll also come with her own set of new skins. So, we’ll see if we even get the Thor: Love and Thunder design at some point added into the game.

  • Korean Rating of ‘God of War Ragnarok’ Hints at Upcoming Release

Korean Rating of ‘God of War Ragnarok’ Hints at Upcoming Release

2022 is slowly turning into a big year for gaming, as we’re anticipating some massive game releases, and Summer of Gaming promises to give us a look at what the future has to offer. One of this year’s most anticipated titles might be the sequel to 2018’s God of War with God of War Ragnarok. Fimbulwinter is almost upon us and it looks like the game received a rating from the Korean Rating Board.

This commonly means that the game is in its final stages and that a release date is imminent. While it won’t release this summer, it does seem possible that it could be arriving around September. A fall release has been rumored for a while and while we haven’t gotten an update on the game in some time, there was recently a showcase of its new accessibility features. So, it does seem like Santa Monica Studios is wrapping up work on the game for its release.

God of War reintroduced Kratos to players, as he has found himself in the North raising a child after the tragic passing of his wife. In their journey to respect her last wish, they cross paths with a powerful god that is seeking the one to free him from his curse. The sequel will continue as the Fimbulwinter has been unleashed upon the North and he has to ensure his son survives whatever threats head their way.

  • Daybreak’s Marvel MMORPG Once Again Canceled

Daybreak’s Marvel MMORPG Once Again Canceled

Well, it seems that Daybreak’s visions of an MMORPG in the Marvel Universe may never truly come together, as it has been announced that the latest attempt has once again been squashed. It was initially announced back in November but it seems that EG7, Daybreak’s mother company has confirmed the canceled project. The statement was made as follows:

EG7 today announced it will be discontinuing the development of the Marvel project at Daybreak Games. Based on the re-evaluation of the development risk profile, size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board has decided to change the development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects.

This decision won’t deter any medium-term revenues and profits according to EG7, but it’s surprising that a second attempt would get canceled once again. They tried to get a project going back in 2018, but that project didn’t have any momentum before a second attempt would try to revive it. They have quite a bit of experience with comic book adaptations, such as their work on DC Universe Online, but no details are given about what led to the cancelation.

There have been hints that Marvel’s gaming license fee is quite steep, which makes long-term investments quite the gamble. Square-Enix invested quite a bit to get the license to work on four projects, which only managed to turn into the GaaS game Marvel’s Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. There’s no word if there was another Marvel game in some form of development, and if we’d ever see it after they sold their entire Western division. As of now, it seems Marvel has made its home on the mobile market and PlayStation consoles.

  • New ‘Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2’s Warzone Map Leaks Online After Reveal

New ‘Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2’s Warzone Map Leaks Online After Reveal

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was just officially revealed with a teaser trailer yesterday, but it seems as if leakers weren’t too far behind as we have the first details of the accompanying Warzone 2 map coming from leaker Tom Henderson. The game is rumored to be arriving with Modern Warfare II in October, with the game’s new Escape From Tarkov type mode also being playable on this new map.

We had previously learned that the new Warzone map would be scattered with locations similar to older Call of Duty maps, similar to what we have seen in Warzone and Blackout. Rumored locations include the Airport which is a remake of the Modern Warfare franchise’s Terminal, an expanded version of Quarry, and possibly even bits of Favala, all beloved maps from Modern Warfare’s past. Although we don’t have a clear legitimate picture of the map as of yet, Henderson has drawn a mock-up of what he believes the map to be based on his insider knowledge, which has been pretty spot on with Modern Warfare II. You can see the mock-up below.

As you can see, multiple other POI exists on the map, possibly leading the way for even more classic locations to be featured, as we know is a staple of these larger Call of Duty maps by now. With the large focus on remastering the original Modern Warfare II maps, I would not be surprised to see Activision attempting to capitalize on the standout title that many fans consider the peak of Call of Duty games. Modern Warfare II is certainly shaping up to deliver on fan expectations, are you excited for the future of Call of Duty? Let us know!

  • REPORT: EA Almost Sold to NBC Universal, Now Looking at Disney as New Buyer

REPORT: EA Almost Sold to NBC Universal, Now Looking at Disney as New Buyer

Mergers are all the rage right now. Not too long after Square-Enix sold off its entire Western division, it seems that EA also almost had a massive deal working in the background. In a new piece by Puck News, there was a time of EA and NBC Universal fusing before the deal fell apart in April. It seems the plan was by Comcast’s CEO Brian Roberts to create new IPs and brands and the Microsoft-Activision deal seemingly inspired Electronic Arts’ CEO, Andrew Wilson, to merge the company with NBCUniversal.

Yet, they could not come to an agreement on the monetary aspect, and, as a result, the deal fell off. Yet, it seems EA is quite focused on getting sold with a new deal being potentially discussed with Disney. It seems they want “a more meaningful relationship than licensing deals” as stated by Puck News’ Dylan Byers. It seems that the main focus is also on unifying their major sports brands ESPN and EA Sports.

The deal has not been made public as of now, and there’s no real specifics on how far the project has come. As of now, it seems they may only be considering Disney as a new buyer but an offer or deal isn’t on the table yet. Still, it would continue to shake up the gaming industry as mergers have become quite a bit more common as of late. Plus, Disney may be coy about adding more to their already extensive list. With the purchase of 20th Century Fox not too long ago, they may also not want to be in the hot seat again in expanding their enterprise with such a high investment.

  • Norman Reedus Seemingly Confirms ‘Death Stranding’ Sequel is in Production

Norman Reedus Seemingly Confirms ‘Death Stranding’ Sequel is in Production

Many were excited to see what the first independent-produced game by Kojima Productions would look like, especially with Hideo Kojima taking full charge of the project. It resulted in the game known as Death Stranding, which was quite a bit different from what many expected the Metal Gear Solid director would end up working on. In it, you take on the role of Sam, played by Norman Reedus, who transports items across a post-apocalypse from one bunker to the next, helping humanity rebuild and research the mysterious phenomenon that changed the world.

In an interview with Leo Edit, it seems he may have accidentally confirmed that they are working on a sequel. In the interview, he reveals that he met Kojima through Guillermo Del Toro, where he worked on his first feature film. Seemed he didn’t have many options as Del Toro told him to just say yes and that’s how he ended up on what would’ve been Silent Hills. Still when asked about what’s to follow after wrapping up on The Walking Dead.

We just started the second one.

    Norman Reedus

It’s definitely surprising that Kojima Productions is working on a sequel, as while it was definitely critically acclaimed, sales seemed a bit more mellow than initially expected. Still, Death Stranding has a lot of potential in further exploring the world it presents and he hints it took him “two to three years” to finish the MoCap. So, they may have finished work on another project in the meantime before tackling the sequel. Yet, it’s only speculation as we haven’t heard anything outside of the Director’s Cut since the release back in 2019.

  • ‘Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Gets Rating in South Korea, Hints at Release Soon

‘Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Gets Rating in South Korea, Hints at Release Soon

While most attention has been on Marvel’s Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy game as of late, the upcoming XCOM-inspired Midnight Suns has been a bit dormant. Due to some delays, it was unclear when we might expect the game to release, which will feature a wide variety of Marvel characters facing off against Lilith and the revived HYDRA. The player will take on the character only known as Hunter, who they can customize throughout the game’s playtime. A Redditor by the name of u/LongJonSllver has uncovered a rating in South Korea for the game, which may hint at a release date soon.

Normally, rating boards are only assigned when a game is near completion and they are on their way to finalizing the project. There’s been no word if the game has gone gold yet, but it does add to the speculation that a new announcement may be on the horizon.

There’s been no word if the game has gone gold yet, but it does add to the speculation that a new announcement may be on the horizon. XCOM developer Firaxis is working on the game, which started making the rounds ahead of last year’s E3 event. There are supposedly some unannounced characters for the game. So, we’ll see if they may also get their time in the spotlight once more details are revealed on its upcoming release.
