  • Firaxis Games’ ‘Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Was a “Commercial Flop”

Firaxis Games’ ‘Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Was a “Commercial Flop”

Given the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many assume that anything with the Marvel logo slapped on it will be a commercial success in every way possible. Though, it’s not always definite that it’ll sell well, especially in the gaming market which is quite a bit more volatile depending on what type of game is being offered. Sadly, it seems that the ambitious card-based strategy RPG Midnight Suns could not benefit from the logo.

In a tweet, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier shared that the CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, has seemingly pointed to Midnight Suns being a commercial flop even with its critical success highlighting the “release window” as a potential factor on what dragged the game’s success in the market down.

    https://twitter.com/jasonschreier/status/1622707723480563721

Going by this, an expectation for the game to build upon its post-credit sequence might be a pipedream. We still have three more DLC characters heading our way after the recent release of Deadpool. Midnight Suns isn’t going to wrap up and they haven’t announced that the project is shutting down, but it does seem safe to say that the DLC is all we’ll really get out of the game’s longevity.

It’s such a shame but a card-based RPG was a tough sale from the beginning, as some online reactions to the game’s initial announcement had people a bit worried. The knockback system did offer some variety and its combination of exploring a central hub while taking on various missions offered variety, it also wasn’t truly marketed enough ahead of its release. Constant delays didn’t help matters much sadly but perhaps Firaxis still might give a sequel a shot.

  • Job Listings Hint at Multiplayer for ‘Ghost of Tsushima 2’

Job Listings Hint at Multiplayer for ‘Ghost of Tsushima 2’

It looks like Sucker Punch Productions is actively looking to implement multiplayer elements in an upcoming game. They are actively looking to hire a Senior Multiplayer Mission Designer and Senior Multiplayer Systems Designer. As pointed out by ComicBook.com, it’s an interesting ad if you consider that the only game we know of that they are working on is the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.

It doesn’t outright confirm that the sequel will have specific multiplayer functionality, but the first entry already included a functionality titled Ghost of Tsushima: Legends which allowed you to tackle various missions with friends or strangers online. Given how long they supported that functionality, it wouldn’t be too surprising they would want that option to return.

Of course, we don’t know if the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima will be a straight-forward story game, or perhaps they are simply working on a multiplayer spinoff similar to the long-rumored The Last of Us: Factions game that has seemingly been in development hell for some time. It’s also not unusual for popular games to add these new functionalities, especially if they end up having some way to keep players engaged.

Though it’s really curious that they may be hoping to expand the game early on, as Legends wasn’t added until later in the game’s runtime. So, we’ll see if this pans out or Sucker Punch might be working on a secret multiplayer title that hasn’t been officially announced as of now. Only time will tell, or at least E3 might.

  • RUMOR: Retailer Lists ‘Pikmin 4’ For a May Release Date

RUMOR: Retailer Lists ‘Pikmin 4’ For a May Release Date

It’s a big year for gaming, as after a long wait Nintendo is pushing out some new entries of their popular franchises. The Legend of Zelda: Tear of a Kingdom has been on everyone’s radar for quite some time after it continued to get small teasers. Even now, we’re still wondering where any of the promotion for that game is, but it seems it may not be the only game set for a release in just a few months.

Greek retailer Game Explorers may have seemingly leaked the release date for Pikmin 4 online, as they have added the game for a May 26th, 2023 release. This would fall on a Friday, which is the usual M.O. for Nintendo releases. Of course, it may also be a mistake given that sometimes this information is just rushed out but it does give us a sense that perhaps Pikmin 4 may release sometime this year.

Pikmin 4 was first announced back in September to the surprise of many, as while the game has been hinted at for quite some time, it almost felt like one o those entries that’ll likely never see the light of day. The last entry was released all the way back in 2013, which also took quite some time to release with the second entry hitting shelves in 2004.

At this rate, it seems that each new entry takes more and more time. Yet the May release isn’t definite and we’ll have to see if that’ll be confirmed in an upcoming Nintendo Direct, which has been rumored to return in February; a usual time for Nintendo to make some announcements.

  • OFFICIAL: ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ to Cease Support in September

OFFICIAL: ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ to Cease Support in September

Not too long ago, a rumor hit the internet that Marvel’s Avengers may be ending sooner than expected, there were hints that we’ll get an official statement next week. Surprisingly, the news came even faster as the official blog from Crystal Dynamics announced that the game will get one final update on March 31s. Overall support for the game will wrap on September 30th, 2023 marking its third year since release.

The recent update of 2.7 with Winter Soldier and Cloning Labs will be the last new content update and there won’t be any more cosmetics being added to the game. 2.8 in March will mainly only act as a balance update for those still actively playing the game. They do highlight that even after September, the single- and multiplayer functionality will still be available.

For those that still have credits invested in the game, the marketplace will no longer be available as of March with leftover credits being balanced through in-game currencies to develop your characters. They also will make all challenge cards and shipment cosmetics available for players for free. They are also set to gift all the marketplace cosmetics as a way to show their gratefulness to those that stuck around.

The game wrapping up with its third year seems quite fitting even if it’s a shame we couldn’t at least finish the storyline that was set out with the Kree invasion hinted at ever since the events of A-Day. Captain Marvel has been hinted at as a character ever since Ms. Marvel was first released yet we’ll never know what their original plans were. She was just one of many more that were rumored to release long before the game launched. Guess we’ll never know.

  • RUMOR: Atlus May Reveal ‘Persona 5’ and ‘Persona 3 Remake’ This Summer

RUMOR: Atlus May Reveal ‘Persona 5’ and ‘Persona 3 Remake’ This Summer

The rumor mill surrounding the Persona franchise has been quite curious. The 25th anniversary fell flat for many fans due to the build-up potentially hinting at the confirmation of Persona 6 but no real news coming out of the event. Yes, we did get the remasters of Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and even Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, but it left many wondering what exactly the future looks like for the franchise.

Then we got a surprise development with a new rumor hitting the web that we’re not only potentially getting a new mainline entry, but even a remake of Persona 3 in some form of development. It seems like an exciting time to be a fan of the franchise yet Atlus remains silent on any of its current projects. There have been hints that some of their initial plans for the 25th anniversary couldn’t come quite together as planned, but a new rumor is making the rounds that they’ll make up for it in 2023.

Resetera isn’t the safest place for rumors, but the source is someone that has called the reveals from the anniversary and was the source behind the remake rumor. While no true details have been shared, they highlight that the Remake and Persona 6 are further down the production line with a potential summer reveal planned.

They also highlight that they were originally set to be revealed at an earlier date but things shifted for one reason or another. Still, Atlus has not been shy to hint at “several” unannounced titles heading our way in 2023 which also adds at least some believability that something for the future Persona entries might be revealed sooner rather than later. There’s still hope that the green bucket in one of the anniversary images was a definite hint at the sixth entry.

  • RUMOR: ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ May End Sooner Than Expected

RUMOR: ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ May End Sooner Than Expected

Marvel’s Avengers has been an interesting project to follow throughout the years. It was an ambitious game when it was first announced, as you’ll get the chance to play a never-ending game that slowly adds more and more heroes to its roster. Games-as-a-Service have always been controversial but the promise was there yet a botched release left a bitter taste in players.

There was still some merit to what the game had to offer with some great combat and some fun story additions. Yet ever since the Black Panther-focused content patch, we’ve not seen any single-player offerings from the game since. We did finally get Cloning Labs recently, but Marvel’s Avengers certainly lost the momentum that it promised during its initial release.

Now that Winter Soldier made his way tot he game, rumors continued to make the rounds that the game will eventually shut production in 2023 but still with one more big batch of content set to release. A new article published by Miller Ross, who made a name online for leaking various details from the game, has shared that the game may be ending sooner rather than later.

In a new piece for eXputer, the leaker has shared details of what he’s heard that is happening behind the scenes over at Crystal Dynamics. It’s no secret that they’ve started work on their next Tomb Raider game under the new ownership and with Amazon Games set to release it. If this piece is to be believed, most of the skeleton crew that was still involved with the project will soon be fully moved to the studio’s new title.

Brian Waggoner took over as Lead Developer some time ago, but due to controversy was no longer going to represent the studio or the project. He goes on to highlight that Waggoner has now completely departed the project and that has shifted some initial plans. It seems they wanted to keep the game running still going into the second half of the year but they are seemingly fast-tracking the game’s end.

We still have to take it with a grain of salt, but Miller claims the game’s official cancelation would follow next week. While it didn’t live to its fullest potential, Marvel’s Avengers still managed to go for over two years after initially hitting shelves back in September 2020. The game isn’t going to shut down from one day to the next, as they may have one final release set and rework some elements allowing for those still playing the game to continue to do so.

Marvel Games is about to enter a new era of offerings with releases such as Midnight Suns and the return of Spider-Man 2. We have a variety of new projects heading our way, such as the new Iron Man game from EA, which is supposedly not the only one as two other games are rumored. We also have a second Insomniac franchise in development based around Wolverine, but it does seem unlikely that Marvel is going to test the waters with a GaaS game anytime soon after the experience with Marvel’s Avengers; if it gets officially canceled soon or still continues moving forward.

  • New Leak Reveals Battle Pass for Rocksteady’s ‘Suicide Squad’

New Leak Reveals Battle Pass for Rocksteady’s ‘Suicide Squad’

Marvel’s Avengers has left a bitter taste with players, as its release was quite messy and there were some concerns about the general trend of superhero properties exploring Games-as-a-Service offerings. Even Gotham Knights seemed to struggle with its multiplayer focus and the attempt at expanding the franchise with its long-term multiplayer offerings. Now, the next superhero release from Rocksteady is seemingly heading down a similar rocky road.

An image leaked for the upcoming game Suicide Squad Kills the Justice League has revealed a rather curious aspect of the game. The image shared by @Mr_Rebs that was seemingly making the rounds on 4Chan reveals that the game will have a Battle Pass. It’s also our first look at a very simple UI structure for a game promising a colorful exploration of the DC Universe.

For those that might not be too familiar with the concept, it’s a type of functionality that recently created a controversy surrounding the release of Overwatch 2. Instead of letting players use the in-universe currency to unlock skins, you have to pay to have access to a list that only unlocks depending on how well you play.

There’s no word if this game was meant to be a GaaS game, as the wording has been avoided quite a bit. But the inclusion of a Game Pass opens that discussion once again, especially if this means we’ll get more content or characters in the future. There is a “Game Mode” inclusion which hints at some multiplayer offerings but there’s still so little we know about the project. The leaked image has been confirmed and we’re left with a few questions until an official statement follows from Rocksteady.

  • FIRST IMPRESSION: ‘One Piece Odyssey’ Demo Teases Promising JRPG

FIRST IMPRESSION: ‘One Piece Odyssey’ Demo Teases Promising JRPG

One Piece is returning in style, as a brand new game is about to release as part of the 25th anniversary of the franchise. One Piece Odyssey was a long-rumored project and might be the franchise’s most ambitious entry into its gaming expansion. It’s the franchise’s first foray into bringing the chaotic Straw Hat crew into the world of JPRGs and trying to bring their unique energy to the normally slower-paced gaming genre. We get a demo release that offers a first look into what we can expect from the full game. As such, here are our first impressions of the game.

The story of One Piece Odyssey is rather straightforward. The Straw Hats were sailing along the seas before a Knock-Up stream shoots them randomly into the sky. With a last attempt to escape, they end up on the mysterious island of Waford. We start the game at the moment when Luffy wakes up and his crew is scattered, which leads to us having to help them find the rest of their crew and meet some locals along the way.

After you wake up on the shore of Waford, you’re pretty much thrown into the game. Most of your characters start off at level 40 with quite a few abilities. It lets you try out every character while getting a tutorial on how the basic combat works. The moment you enter your first encounter you’ll instantly see the basic structure of an RPG at play. Yet, there are some interesting additions that do make it stand out.

The Straw Hats are usually very powerful on their own. So, to ensure no one is nerfed, they created a system that has multiple areas where enemies face a member of the pirate crew. You can move between these zones, but you’ll have to defeat the enemy in front of you to join another. The combat system also allows you to swap out party members per turn to make use of their abilities; though it feels a bit too powerful as theirs no penalty for switching characters on the field or that aren’t on the field.

A lot of work went into the animations of these attacks, which are very authentic and add a lot of charm to this game. Though, sadly these aren’t always translated to the exploration as the game will fade to black with an effect when showing someone attacking a creature in the overworld. Given the work that was put into the models, it does seem like a shame they rely a bit too often on a fade to black to transition from one moment to the next.

One drawback is that the game has not really been challenging as of now. The Straw Hats lose their abilities and reset to Level 1 through the story but you still can one-shot specific enemies. There’s not a lot of challenge and even the puzzles are quite barebones. There’s a chance that may change over the course of the story, but there was rarely a time I had to worry about anyone taking too much damage. Though, that is mostly due to abusing the party change function to just swap out a member that would do more damage.

Still, the mechanics at play are interesting and are fun to play around with. If they start expanding on this system, it would make for a very promising JRPG, especially with the event mechanic where you’ll get a bonus if you fulfill certain requirements. There’s also a chance to use a knockback that takes care of enemies within an area fast; though not as satisfying as the knockback element in Midnight Suns. There are a lot of great elements that make these battles dynamic and interesting, which has me excited to see how they are later in the game.

The only drawback is that the exploration is very slow, especially in the opening area. It’s not uncommon for JRPGs to take some time before they get going, but there are small elements that seem to take up more time than they should. Luffy can swing to an area by stretching his arm, but you have to wait a certain amount of time before you can move again. Once you go the wrong way during a specific sequence, the loading times take longer than they really should. You’ll even have a cutscene before you can explore only to be halted just moving forward to enter another. Pacing issues could be a problem as some aspects might drag out more than they really should.

Still, overall, the game is very promising and the story also offers just enough intrigue to keep new and long-time One Piece fans hooked. They make some deep-cut references that feel like elements to help make Waford feel more like a part of this world. The mystery with the weird floating orb and the cubes is just the perfect amount of bizarre that’ll likely keep players guessing. Also, they nailed the dynamics of the Straw Hats with their little interactions during cutscenes, on the map, or even during cutscenes.

The demo also gets bonus points for letting me save at the end of it, which can be used for once you purchase the full game later on. As such, you’re not forced to replay the entire opening once again and can just leisurely jump in where you left off. Still, the first impression of this game is positive even if some exploration aspects could’ve been tweaked to run longer. With many mini-worlds to visit through memories, it’ll be exciting to see what Bandai Namco has planned for this ambitious JRPG once it releases. From what the demo offers, it definitely is a recommendation for fans of One Piece and worth trying out for those new to it.

  • ‘Silent Hill 2 Remake’ Developers Promise a Faithful Revival But Tease One Major Overhaul

‘Silent Hill 2 Remake’ Developers Promise a Faithful Revival But Tease One Major Overhaul

While there was a lot of excitement with the return of Silent Hill as a gaming franchise, there still were some reservations about some of the reveals. Most notably, Bloober Team hasn’t had the biggest track record with people that felt like most of their games oversold their promise of horror, and there were accusations of them mainly stealing most of their elements from others. So, them working on a remake of Silent Hill 2 had left many with some concerns.

Luckily, it seems that Bloober Team wants to ensure that they are staying true to the original game; hoping to ease some concerns of modern elements taking away from the psychological horror that defined the franchise. DreadXP had the chance to sit down with Anna Jasińska who shared some insight into the upcoming adaptation.

The idea of working on this project stalked us for many years, and in 2019, we received an invitation from Konami to participate in the Tokyo Games Show. To our delight, Konami asked us to prepare a concept for a remake of the original game’s second installment in exchange for the opportunity of bringing the concept to life.

    Anna Jasińska

She shared that their concept “stole Konami’s heart” and led to them getting the sign off on remaking Silent Hill 2. She goes on to highlight that they are “bringing the distinct, visceral atmosphere back” and staying true to what made the original what it is today.

We are focusing on bringing the distinct, visceral atmosphere back in the modernized SILENT HILL 2. Longtime fans shouldn’t worry about us “missing the point” while we’re livening up the title. We faithfully stick to the traditional story canon while remaking the gameplay and updating the graphics from the ground up.

    Anna Jasińska

Jasińska does point out that they are updating one element from the original and that is its combat system. We saw glimpses of a more modernized take on a third-person horror game but no distinction on how that’ll be brought to life. Tank controls in the original added to the atmosphere and the clumsy combat was part of its charm, but certainly wouldn’t still work in a modern take.

These are the reasons why Konami entrusted us with the remake in the first place. A big visible change is the adoption of an over-the-shoulder camera, which altered the perspective of a few iconic set pieces, but also meant an overhaul to the combat system. The latest technological achievements do wonder when it comes to making the visuals pop.

    Anna Jasińska

Sadly, they wouldn’t go into any more details such as if they’d adapt the infamous kitchen scene, but for now, it seems like the remake is in good hands. We’re still waiting for a release date on the remake and a follow-up trailer showcasing the new combat system, but

  • Ubisoft’s Creative Director Teases Massive’s Open-World Star Wars Project

Ubisoft’s Creative Director Teases Massive’s Open-World Star Wars Project

2023 is set to be another major year for gaming, as many iconic franchises are making a return. We’re getting remasters of previous Persona games, more rumors hinting at the return of Metal Gear Solid, and more. There’s also the release of Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, which will see the return of Cal Kestis and a new game in the Star Wars franchise. That is not all, as it seems that we might finally get an update on the open-world game set in this universe by Massive Entertainment.

We first heard about the game’s development back in January 2021, but outside of it being open-world, we didn’t know anything else about the project. It was also the first game to not be developed by EA in any way, which would set a new direction for Lucasfilm Games. We haven’t heard anything since but a new tweet by Julian Gerighty, the Creative Director for Ubisoft, shared a new tweet hinting at the project in 2023.

While it doesn’t mean that the game will release this year, there’s a chance we at least get an update. They may wait until the March release of Jedi Survivor, as it gives them some time to focus on advertising the project before they focus on their next game in the iconic franchise. Here’s hoping that the wait isn’t much longer until we get a closer look at what the open world game may be like. Here’s hoping we might get to play Mandalorian staking out bounties in the galaxy.
