  • ‘Eternals’ Features Two Post-Credits With Big Surprises

‘Eternals’ Features Two Post-Credits With Big Surprises

Eternals looked like a project that would work independently from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yet, in an interview with Fandango, director Chloé Zhao has teased that not only does it explore the origins of the fictional universe but it may also have huge implications for the future. Luckily, she also confirmed that the Marvel Studios tradition lives on with the film having not one but two post-credit sequences. Not just that, she also highlighted that there will be some big surprises for both that might build upon the events of the film.

Don’t just stay for the first one — also stay for the second one, too. They are equally as important in weight, and both have big surprises for you.

    Chloé Zhao

Eternals spans around 7,000 years and there are a lot of aspects that could help establish the future. She teased that the film will mainly focus on the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame which will most likely tie into the post-credit sequence. Perhaps there’s a new aspect of this franchise that’ll finally make its appearance once the credits roll.

  • ‘Eternals’ Exploration of the MCU’s Origins Will Build Its Future

‘Eternals’ Exploration of the MCU’s Origins Will Build Its Future

Marvel Studios has just released its first featurette for the upcoming Eternals film. Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao builds off of her work of Nomadland to explore not just the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, but also the origins of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailers only gave us a glimpse of the Celestials, the ones that started it all but there might be a lot more to them, especially with what it may mean for the MCU moving forward.

In an interview with Fandango, Zhao offered some insight into her approach to the film, such as how she pitched it with a blow-up macro photo of sand while reciting a William Blake poem. She then went on to discuss how the film dives into the origins of the entire fictional universe and how the Celestials play a big part in the mythology they are building and may have larger implications for its future.

Well, let’s see… I think a big part of it is that audiences will be discovering the origin of the MCU through the mythology of the Celestials. I think by the end of the film, we will have a new understanding of planet Earth’s relationship with the cosmos, and also with her own inhabitants. But in that sense, it would have a huge effect on the future of the MCU.

    Chloé Zhao

The origins of the MCU through the eyes of the Celestials may explore how Earth’s creation may tie into the appearance of many superpowered individuals. If it explores the history of the franchise, perhaps we’ll get a window into what makes humanity such a unique host for abilities and powers. In the comics, they also have close ties to Thanos, who’s referenced openly in some of the trailers. Perhaps there’s more to the Deviants than we first expect.

  • Bill Murray May Have a Role in Marvel Studios’ ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’

Bill Murray May Have a Role in Marvel Studios’ ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’

Here’s a rather curious little detail. On the site Mandy, which helps smaller actors find work within the industry, there’s a rather curious listing. Actor John Townsend has a listing for working on a film from 2021 until 2022 as a photo double. Not just that, he would act as a double for Bill Murray. The film’s name isn’t listed, but the production name Dust Bunny gives us a clear indication of which film it is. It was back in April that we learned that this production title belongs to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Mandy has been a source to tease future appearances in the past. In July, a listing hinted at a possible Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness connection with Namor due to a listing of the character Gargantos 2. We still should take it with a bit of a grain of salt until an official announcement arrives, but the inclusion is rather curious. There’s a good chance that it might change once anyone at Marvel realizes that Murray‘s name is included in their credits. What helps matters is that director Peyton Reed is quite the fan of the actor and shared a signature he got. So, it wouldn’t be too surprising that he’d hope for him to join the production.

Still, Bill Murray is one of those legacy actors that would make for an incredible addition to the franchise. The actor has made a name in the industry with classics like Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Caddyshack, and so many more. He is currently set to return in the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife film that builds upon the original franchise from 1984. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of role he could have in a comedy-focused franchise like the Ant-Man and the Wasp films.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’ Third Film to Cross $400M Globally

‘Shang-Chi’ Third Film to Cross $400M Globally

We’ve been keeping a close eye on box office numbers throughout the year, as the world slowly heals from the pandemic. The first positive developments were back in April when Godzilla vs. Kong managed to beat expectations. As everyone focused on hybrid releases, F9: The Fast Saga took the risk and proved its success. So, while Disney was hesitant with Black Widow, they were all-in with Shang-Chi. The more time passes, the more it looks like the risk paid off.

The latest Marvel Studios release managed to garner another $9.1M throughout the weekend. While Venom: Let There Be Carnage faced a harsh drop in its second weekend, the MCU film managed to hold somewhat steady. With these numbers, it’s the third film to cross the $400M global box office mark. Officially, it has joined F9 and Godzilla vs. Kong. It’s great to see the film continue to perform well and it still has some time before it releases on Disney+.

The film currently earned $189.1M internationally and stands at $401.6M globally. We also have to keep in mind that it joined two other films that had the advantage of releasing in China. While there were hints it might find its way there, it seems more and more unlikely as time goes by. We still have no Chinese release date for the next two entries, Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home. So, it’s no small accomplishment for Shang-Chi to garner the amount it has at the international box office.

  • ‘Black Widow’s Family Dinner Scene Almost Didn’t Happen

‘Black Widow’s Family Dinner Scene Almost Didn’t Happen

Black Widow has recently been released on Disney+ for all subscribers to watch. The film finally gave Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff her own story to explore the past she believed she could leave behind. It introduced us to her extended family with Yelena Belova, Alexei Shostakov, and Melina Vostokoff. It explores this dysfunctional family and how their relationship continued to live on even after they had to flee the United States. It all culminated in one of the most memorable scenes of the entire film, but it seems it almost didn’t make it in.

Director Cate Shortland sat down with Empire to discuss her work on the film and revealed that the famous dinner scene almost didn’t make it into the film. It seems they had a hard time nailing down the dynamic and considered taking it out. Yet, it was Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige who insisted that they keep it in. As she highlights:

He doesn’t give you many directives, he’s very free. But that was a scene he really felt needed to be in the film, and Scarlett and I kept fighting him on it, saying, ‘How will this ever work?’ But it became a very alive thing. You’ve got this bunch of people shipwrecked together, who are still desperately trying to cling onto the roles that they had in Ohio, because that’s all they know. That’s all they have. And it’s beautiful for me

    Cate Shortland

Considering it was one of the most emotionally resonant scenes in the film, it was great that Feige pushed for it to make it in. It’s the strange relationship that exists, as they saw each other as a family unit while living in Ohio. It was quickly ripped apart when their secret was uncovered and Alexei’s obsession with fame left a dent in their relationship. Now, they were trying to make amends before they face the Red Room together, as a family. The film might not have been the same without it.

  • Kingsley Ben-Adir Talks Marvel Training to Keep ‘Secret Invasion’s Secrets

Kingsley Ben-Adir Talks Marvel Training to Keep ‘Secret Invasion’s Secrets

Marvel Studios has been infamous for trying to keep a tight-lip on all their projects. Still, sometimes things find their way online. There are bigger rumors, such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to introduce the world to Namor the Sub-Mariner, or the small tidbit here and there. We’ve wondered if they’d start tightening up security on their projects, and it seems they are very adamant about keeping Secret Invasion as much of a secret as they can.

We learned back in March that Kingsley Ben-Adir will play a villainous role in the Disney+ series. Of course, people have been using the chance to find out who exactly he is playing. At the 2021 GQ Men of the Year awards, he was interviewed on the series but gave a rather interesting answer. It seems that Marvel Studios is training their actors to keep a tight lip on their projects.

We’re figuring it out at the moment. They’ve been training us not to talk for like six months. As soon as you asked that, I’ve just got in my head this Marvel robot saying, ‘Don’t talk, don’t say anything, say nothing, lie.’ So I don’t know.

    Kingsley Ben-Adir

There’s a good chance this is also reactionary by Marvel Studios due to some actors openly talking about spoilers. Alfred Molina famously outright confirmed his return to Spider-Man: No Way Home back in April, which most likely also sparked his appearance in the film’s first trailer. There was also the time Russel Crowe openly talked about playing Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder without a care in the world. A project with the title Secret Invasion might require an extra amount of secrecy to ensure it releases spoiler-free.

  • ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Faces Harsh Drop in Second Weekend

‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Faces Harsh Drop in Second Weekend

The numbers are in and Venom: Let There Be Carnage seems to be facing a harsh drop in its second weekend. The sequel pulled in around $8.85M this Friday, which is a drop of 76%. As of now, the film is eyeing around $32.49M, which puts it at a total drop of around 64%. In comparison, the first Venom was able to hold at around 9.8M in 2018. It had less competition at the time, as its sequel faces off against the final Daniel Craig-led James Bond film, No Time to Die. It’s only slightly below Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s 62% back in 2017. It may potentially have a leggier run just like the Spidey flick. Still, for now, the film is eyeing a 30M second weekend.

Right now, it seems like the film could manage around $180M by the end of its run. It managed to pass the $100M mark in just a few days and was on par with Shang-Chi‘s developments after premiering with $90M. There’s a chance it could hit the $200M range if it has a similar multiplier like Black Widow, but the following weeks will offer a clearer picture.

No Time To Die is eyeing the top spot with a $60M but is also far behind earlier expectations. Still, Forbes’ Scott Mendelsohn highlights that its current development is on par with pre-pandemic only suffering around a 15% loss due to COVID. Its competition, Shang-Chi and Addams Family 2 were still holding surprisingly firm over the weekend. The former even got a bit of a rebound this Friday and is eyeing a still-impressive $4.37M.

  • Evangeline Lilly Talks How ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s Script Embraces Chaos Theory

Evangeline Lilly Talks How ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s Script Embraces Chaos Theory

Peyton Reed is currently filming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in London with a cast including Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Jonathan Majors. With the latter confirmed as the villain Kang the Conqueror, it will seemingly continue elements of Loki’s finale where He Who Remains, a Kang variant from another universe, was murdered. His death unleashed the chaos of the multiverse upon the once Sacred Timeline.

Evangeline Lilly is also currently promoting her indie-thriller South of Heaven. In an interview with Collider, she naturally was asked some questions about the Ant-Man and the Wasp sequel. She spoke with particular fondness about Jeff Loveness, the writer of the third Ant-Man film, who she suggested had written the best script so far for the franchise.

I think he is phenomenal. I think he’s one of the best writers we’ve ever had. I think he’s got an incredible mastery of voice. So, on the page, I could hear all the characters, and I knew that he’d really kind of harnessed each person’s unique personality. I just think that it’s going to be really special. I actually think it has the chance to be the best one we’ve done yet.

    Evangeline Lilly

Lilly also spoke about watching the Marvel Studios Disney+ series. In particular, she spoke about being excited by the science behind the multiverse:

The science geek in me loves that element of how smart they are and how they tackle such enormous topics that most kind of fluff popcorn movies are not going to tackle. They tackled chaos theory. That’s really brave and really bold and really cool.” […] And the fact that when we explore the two sides to chaos theory, it’s two sides of the same person, is so good.

    Evangeline Lilly

Intriguingly, Lilly spoke about chaos theory specifically while praising the Quantumania script. While we don’t have any hints about the storyline in the third entry, the fact that Jonathan Majors is reprising his role as a variant of the character we met in the finale of Loki suggests that they might crossover. The series also has a second season in the works, which may explore the fallout of these events. It will be exciting to see how the film blends its usual themes of “family” with the wider impact of the multiverse.

  • How ‘Black Panther’s Themes Can Inspire An Indigenous Mesoamerican Atlantis

How ‘Black Panther’s Themes Can Inspire An Indigenous Mesoamerican Atlantis

Black Panther is the highest-rated Marvel Studios film by critics. The themes of the film are powerfully and efficiently woven into the characters and plot. Ryan Coogler is celebrated for his worldbuilding with production designer Hannah Beachler. They spent 10 months weaving real-world African history and culture into a 500-page guide to Wakanda and will likely repeat the process for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Namor, Attuma, and Namora will reportedly be joining Coogler’s sequel with Indigenous Mesoamerican cultures as worldbuilding inspiration. All of this might help us speculate what direction the story and characters might take in the highly-anticipated sequel.

    Kukulcán's Pyramid (Chichén Itzá, 9th century-12th century) | Structurae

Colonization is a theme that is inherently entwined with Wakanda’s history as the animated sequence that opens Black Panther shows. Vibranium enabled Wakanda to defend itself from the horrors of the Atlantic slave trade and the colonization of Africa by European nations. The threat of it intensely affected T’Challa’s perception of his father, T’Chaka, who killed his brother to keep Wakanda hidden. He states that all of his ancestors were wrong to turn their backs on their neighbors. He speaks about interdependence and taking care of others as he rejects isolation to open up Wakanda. The cultural trauma of colonization provides the personal connection to the film’s themes that Coogler has described as bringing him “closer to [his] roots.”

With the MCU’s Atlantis being inspired by Indigenous Mesoamerican cultures it seems likely that these themes will also be present. Rooting Atlantis in the history of an ancient cataclysm could mirror the real-world colonial destruction of Aztec and Maya civilizations. The Yucatan Peninsula’s historical connections to meteorites hint at a hidden society, mirroring Wakanda’s creation legend of a vibranium meteorite. A sunken yet technologically advanced state like that might be of particular interest to the U.S. In Namor’s first comic appearances he wages a war against the “surface-dwellers” (Motion Picture Funnies Weekly Vol 1 #1, 1939 Bill Everett). Yet the cultural-historical inspiration suggests Atlantis will be the state to be discovered and attacked for its resources. Like T’Challa in Black Panther, Prince Namor’s leadership will likely be tested in the face of colonial tension.

Fate of Killmonger's Mom in 'Black Panther' Is So, So Sad

Wakanda’s leadership tensions set the stage for more complex explorations of governance. Chadwick Boseman’s tragic passing impacts the sequel in such a way, suggesting Wakanda might use more collective leadership going forward. If Shuri, Nakia, Okoye, and M’Baku can unite in a leaderful way, there may yet be hope against the rising tide of Atlantis. Prince Namor’s leadership in contrast could be challenged as Namora and Attuma have different intentions in their comic histories. Namora, despite being Namor’s cousin, has spent much time away from Atlantis with surface-dwellers. Attuma is a barbaric warlord banished from Atlantis who wants to conquer it. While undiscovered in the MCU, Atlantis’ leadership could be somewhat united, splitting as the world becomes aware of its existence. How these once hidden societies treat outsiders interested in exploiting them will tell us a lot about their leadership.

Much of Black Panther’s plot is driven by outsiders discovering Wakanda. In the case of Erik Killmonger, he uses his “blood right” as T’Challa’s first cousin to challenge for the throne. The question then becomes whether birthright or culture is the maintaining force in bringing people into society. The cultural trauma of America’s exploitative culture which he grew up in, clashes with the more supportive culture of Wakanda. Killmonger sees no future beyond himself, burning the heart-shaped herb, stating “the sun will never set on the Wakandan empire.” By contrast, T’Challa opens Wakanda up with a learning center in Oakland rather than violent empire and colonialism. The consequences of opening Wakanda’s resources, potentially placing them in the scopes of America’s military-industrial complex is an open question.

Black Panther: Wakanda's War With Namor Almost Ended the Marvel Universe

Similarly, Atlantis might have resources that place them under the spotlight of outsiders to their society. They might even have outsiders within their existing ranks. Conflicting identities play a role in Namor’s life as they did with Killmonger. He is a mutant in the comics and has a mixed heritage from his human father and Atlantean mother. In the film, Namor will likely have to negotiate with elements of Atlantean society that frown upon his human origins. Similarly, Tenoch Huerta who is reportedly playing Namor has Indigenous origins through Purepecha and Nahua heritage. In the comics, when allied with mutantkind, Namor attacks Wakanda with the full weight of the sea. Whether outside incursions from surface-dwellers or aggressive internal factions will compel him to do so in the MCU is unknown.

Cultural trauma, whether it be from historical colonial violence or exclusion leadership policy, is a rich vein for powerful themes. It seems clear Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will continue some themes of the first film in the worldbuilding for Atlantis. Various other comic adaptations could also take this route. A British-Indian Braddock family would organically confront colonial themes, and provide a strikingly powerful Captain Britain. Similarly profound, could be, a Romani writer writing a Scarlet Witch film, introducing a Romani actor playing Victor von Doom. Magneto’s Jewish heritage could be part of a multi-heritage background. It’s exciting to think that Ryan Coogler’s films can act as a blueprint for how themes of cultural trauma are explored across the MCU.

  • Andy Serkis Confirms Venom and Spider-Man Are on a Collision Course

Andy Serkis Confirms Venom and Spider-Man Are on a Collision Course

Venom: Let There Be Carnage has already surpassed $100M at the domestic box off all but assuring that that film will continue to spawn as many potential sequels and spinoffs as there have been symbiotes in the franchise. While the film has done well at the box office, it’s the post-credit scene that has had everyone buzzing and, according to director Andy Serkis, Sony plans to make good on the promise of the tease of the two separate movie universes colliding by bringing Spider-Man and Venom face-to-face. Serkis explained in an interview with ComicBook.com.

We wanted to leave the audience knowing that these universes are going to somehow collide and we wanted to do it in such a way that it still leaves so much open and we’re not timing anything. The portal is not being crossed fully. It’s opening up more questions, I suppose, rather than sort of firmly saying [anything]….It is a tease. It’s a tease, in the fullest sense of the word.

The tease saw Venom and Eddie Brock transported from their universe into the Marvel Cinematic Universe where a television broadcast by J. Jonah Jameson seemingly put Spider-Man in Venom’s sights as a potential bad guy. While Tom Holland‘s Spidey has, so far, only appeared in films that have taken place in the MCU, Sony holds the live-action rights to the character and the ability to use the character in whatever ways they see fit. And as Serkis said, while there’s no timeline that’s yet been revealed, the plans are in place to have Spidey and Venom share the screen for the first time since Sam Raimi’s 2007 Spider-Man 3.

With the big post-credit scene seemingly taking place in the MCU and Kevin Feige once pointing out that Holland’s Spider-Man was the only MCU character who could hop through universe, we’ll have to wait to see WHERE the Spidey/Venom showdown takes place. It’s also worth noting that while it wasn’t too long ago that the two studios had seemingly come to an impasse and were putting their collaborative days behind them, this level of crossover might indicate a new and deeper commitment to working together, something that if done correctly, could only serve to strengthen both franchise’s universe.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is in theaters now and Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to swing into theaters on December 17th.
