  • Chris Pratt Gives Details on the First Day of Production for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

Chris Pratt Gives Details on the First Day of Production for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

Once upon a time, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to hit theaters in May of 2020. As it turns out, if things go according to plan, we’ll see what director James Gunn has called the final chapter for this version of the team 3 years after that original date. It’s been a long time coming, both for fans and for the cast of the film, but production finally began on the film yesterday and, according to star Chris Pratt, the wait will be worth it for us all.

Following the first day, Pratt took the time to give some feedback on the first day via Instagram and left us wondering just exactly what went on:

We’ve heard several members of the cast describe the Vol. 3 script as emotional and with Gunn continuing to insist it’s the end of the line for this version of the team and indicating that it’s quite possible some members of the team won’t make it out of this one alive, it’s no surprise to see Pratt share those sentiments.

Films don’t always shoot scenes in the order in which they appear in the film and thank to Gunn, we know what cast members were on set yesterday, including newcomer Chukwudi Iwuji. Given Pratt’s comments and the presence of both Iwuji and Zoe Saldana (whose Gamora will probably need some time to be located and figure out her place on the team since she is the time-displaced version of the character), it’s possible the scene filmed yesterday could be one from later on in the film where one of the characters has met his or her fate. Pratt says the movie will be worth the wait and for now, we’ll have to take his word for it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently scheduled to rock into theaters on May 5, 2023.

  • Patty Jenkins’ ‘Rogue Squadron’ Film Delayed Indefinitely

Patty Jenkins’ ‘Rogue Squadron’ Film Delayed Indefinitely

Not too long ago, rumors were swirling that Patty Jenkins‘ upcoming Star Wars film titled Rogue Squadron might get delayed by a year. It was originally going to enter production by 2022 and release in 2023. Yet, it seemed a new Old Republic-inspired film was fast-tracked while it was pushed back by a year. The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed the delay due to scheduling issues with Jenkins. It most likely is connected to the quickly confirmed third entry of Wonder Woman and a new Cleopatra film. The film is currently taken off the release schedule, but there is no word if it even might release in 2024.

It’s never great news when production is pushed back, especially if you consider we haven’t had a new Star Wars film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. At this rate, if we don’t get a confirmation on The Old Republic film, we might not get a new entry until 2025. Disney has been focusing more on their Disney+ offerings, which is keeping us covered until then. The Mandalorian has its first spinoff releasing in December with The Book of Boba Fett and there are quite a few others that may release next year. So, we’ll see what the future has in store for its cinematic outings.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Might Get Approved for China Release

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Might Get Approved for China Release

There’s been quite a bit of debacle if any Marvel Studios films would get a release in China, especially with the discussions surrounding Shang-Chi and Eternals. Both projects relied mainly on specific markets with the former even being a strong showcase of Marvel’s resolve to keep the original vision alive by denying edits of LGTBQ+ scenes for specific markets. Yet, it’s a comment by director Chloé Zhao that may be the catalyst for its exclusion. Still, it doesn’t mean they won’t ever release anything in China, as Variety reports that Spider-Man: No Way Home may get approval to release in the Middle Kingdom. It’s a big win for the film especially with how well Spider-Man projects have performed in the country.

A release in China is a big move for any project, as it adds that extra boost during the pandemic for a better box office showing. Ever since the pandemic started, the country has restricted its already limited availability by quite a bit. One of the highest-grossing films of the year is a locally produced one that was released just as theaters opened there. Given Spider-Man’s popularity, he’s very likely to leave an impact. Given all the theories, there’s a chance the film will leave quite a memorable dent in 2021’s box office.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’ and Other Marvel Films Getting IMAX Aspect Ratio on Disney+

‘Shang-Chi’ and Other Marvel Films Getting IMAX Aspect Ratio on Disney+

Disney+ is uniquely expanding its offerings, as you’re going to be able to stream your favorite Marvel movies in a brand new format. To celebrate Disney+ Day, the streaming service is offering your favorite films, including the soon-to-be-released Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, in the newly expanded aspect ratio of 1.90:1. It’s quite the move by Disney to add a layer to their offerings with the service and will be available with a limited amount of films.

    https://twitter.com/Russo_Brothers/status/1457708779806490632?t=DefW1g-YpoJ_lKeT99XnUg&s=19

Black Widow includes around 22 minutes of IMAX shot sequences, which adds reason to rewatch the film once it is made available on November 12th. The current list of films with the newly expanded aspect ratio is the following:

    • Avengers: Endgame
    • Avengers: Infinity War
    • Black Widow
    • Ant-Man and the Wasp
    • Captain America: Civil War
    • Captain Marvel
    • Doctor Strange
    • Thor: Ragnarok
    • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
    • Iron Man
    • Guardians of the Galaxy
    • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

It’s quite an extensive list and offers a reason for anyone that was looking for another reason to check out their favorite Marvel film. For now, it seems they are doing it mainly for their Marvel offerings, but we may see other films get the same treatment in the future. Disney is showing their fangs in the streaming wars and they are adding more pressure to the competition.

  • New ‘The Batman’ Promo Pays Tribute to ‘Batman: The Animated Series’

New ‘The Batman’ Promo Pays Tribute to ‘Batman: The Animated Series’

It looks like a new visual has found its way online promoting the upcoming adaptation of The Batman. Matt Reeves will tackle a new interpretation of the Caped Crusader with Robert Pattinson taking on the daunting task of playing the titular character. We just recently got a second trailer during this year’s DC FAnDome event, as we prepare for its release next March. To tie us over, it seems some promotional material has found its way online that pays tribute to one of the most beloved interpretations to the character, Batman: The Animated Series. The visual comes courtesy of Twitter user @DCverso1.

    https://twitter.com/dcverso1/status/1457498003745517571?s=21

It’s hard to deny the visual similarity with Batman holding up his cape in a similar fashion to that of the original. The 90s animated series was the introduction for many to the character and revolutionized the way we looked at animated projects aimed at kids. Its exploration of adult themes with episodes like “Heart of Ice” or “Baby-Doll” made it stand out from its contemporaries. So, a tribute to the series isn’t too surprising.

The Batman has generally had a very different marketing push from the series that came before. While Christopher Nolan grounded the character in the real world, Matt Reeves seems to be taking a bite out of the different corners of the character’s history. So, instead of being tied to a specific interpretation, he can pay tribute to the many elements that defined the character over the years. Perhaps, we’ll get other visuals paying tribute to the various versions of Batman in the future.

  • First Look at Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Poster

First Look at Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Poster

It’s been quite the wait but we finally got our first official look at the Spider-Man: No Way Home poster. It did accidentally drop early as a poster was noticed on the side of a bus, but it turns out the official poster took a different approach with its design. Not only did they add more elements teasing other villains that have been long rumored. Yet, while Jamie Foxx‘s Elektro is hinted with the lightning bolt and a sandstorm hinting at the return of Spider-Man 3‘s Sandman, it’s the most obvious inclusion that caught everyone’s attention. If you look closely into the background, Willem Dafoe‘s Green Goblin is hanging out in the background ready to tackle Spidey.

Here’s a zoomed-in look at Green Goblin provided by @MarvelFansIN, whose design seems eerily close to the original 2002 version.

We got a brief tease of his pumpkin bombs from the original 2002 Sam Raimi film, but this is our first real look at his inclusion. Alfred Molina‘s Doc Ock took center stage in the initial trailer and promotional material, but his inclusion here might hint at the fact he’ll make an appearance in the second trailer. It’s unclear how big the role is, but his return has been teased since back in December when the first rumors started spreading about the various members of the film’s central group of villains. It’s still unclear how long we might have to wait until the second trailer releases, but we are certainly getting more hints at the main antagonists of this project. It’ll be interesting to see the dynamic between these different villains

  • ‘Eternals’ Kit Harington Chose His Outfit to Match Black Knight’s Comic Design

‘Eternals’ Kit Harington Chose His Outfit to Match Black Knight’s Comic Design

Much has been said about the elaborate costumes in Marvel’s Eternals, especially in how they relate to the comic books that inspired them. While most of that discussion has been directed at the looks worn by the Eternals themselves, designed by the talented Sammy Sheldon, not nearly as many people have taken notice of Kit Harrington’s far more casual threads. The simple and stylish jacket-and-scarf combo is eerily reminiscent of Dane Whitman’s comic book Black Knight uniform, and it appears we have Harrington himself to thank for that.

In a recent interview, the British actor was asked about what it was like to dress for a superhero blockbuster. During his response, director Chloé Zhao chimed in to reveal some interesting information, as Harington joked that he had only to put on some regular clothes for the scenes in the film.

I mean, we let you do your own thing but you chose the colors from the comic books.

    Chloé Zhao

It would appear that the former Game of Thrones was paying attention when researching his new MCU role, and it’s interesting to learn just how much input he had with his own character. Hopefully, we’ll get to see Harington suit up sooner than later. Until then, we can all admire the beautiful ensemble that he put together himself.

  • ‘Dune: Part Two’ Eyeing July 2022 Production Start

‘Dune: Part Two’ Eyeing July 2022 Production Start

Shortly after Dune‘s release in cinemas, we got the announcement that works already started on the sequel. It would end the adaptation of the first book, which director Denis Villeneuve purposefully split into two parts. When the release date was announced, it was quite a surprise given how much time for pre-production would be necessary but turned out the director already had most of that work done. Now, we might also finally have a production start as it is currently planning on Kicking off in July 2022.

The last film left us off with Timothée Chalamet‘s Paul Atreides finally meeting up with the Freman and facing his future, as their potential Messiah. It ended in a tragedy, as he’s lost his father, their entire empire, and even some close friends along the way. Now, he is face-to-face with the woman of his dreams (quite literally) who might put him on a future that’ll change his life in the galaxy forever. It’ll be interesting to see how Villeneuve builds upon the first film and also starts expanding our understanding of the planet Arrakis.

  • ‘Eternals’ Now Fourth-Biggest Domestic Opening of 2021 With $71M

‘Eternals’ Now Fourth-Biggest Domestic Opening of 2021 With $71M

We’ve been watching Eternals‘ predictions go up and down throughout the weekend. Some pointed to it underperforming with around $69M as its highest possible outcome, but it looks like it did keep pushing through and now ends the weekend on $71M. It is behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ $75.3M but takes the fourth spot of highest-earning film openings of the year at the domestic box office. Including its international cume, it now stands at quite an impressive $161.7M with the pandemic still raging.

As of now, the top four releases of the year are Marvel-based properties with three of them stemming from Marvel Studios. The best opening at $90M is still held by Sony’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage film. There is a good chance the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home film might take the top spot before the year ends. Still, Eternals is the second-biggest international opening of any film during the pandemic which is quite impressive and shows that it simply has a stronger pull in other markets, especially South Korea.

Eternals numbers aren’t your usual Marvel Studios fair, as they commonly beat the lowest expectation. Yet, it’s not the first time it happened. Back in the day, Ant-Man also opened to the lower end of its expectations. There’s a strong connection to build-up and connectivity between the various franchises that may play a factor here. Plus, we’re still in the pandemic. The latest entry of the MCU seems to have an older audience in mind, which is currently still entering cinemas later than usual. Naturally, it’s behaving closer to an indie film on a larger scale given Zhao‘s touch and its reception by audiences. It’ll be interesting to see how it develops.

  • ‘Eternals’ Salma Hayek Signed Up for Multiple Marvel Films

‘Eternals’ Salma Hayek Signed Up for Multiple Marvel Films

Eternals has finally released and gave us a hint at the fate of the newly introduced race of aliens that lived among humans for decades. The all-star cast includes quite a few big names, such as Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Don Lee, Kumail, Nanjiani, and many more. Playing the race’s leader is Selma Hayek, who recently joined Smallzy’s Celebrity Small Talk podcast, where she revealed that she has signed up for multiple Marvel Studios films. The host also took to Twitter to share her full quote, where she confirms she has a multi-film deal but she doesn’t know if or when she might return to the role.

I did sign multiple movie deals! It was kind of fun being part of this…secret society that you have to protect so fearlessly.

    Salma Hayek

If you haven’t watched the film yet, only continue at your own risk, as we will spoil a major moment in the story.

So, this is a rather curious confirmation. Salma Hayek‘s character Ajak famously dies early on in the story and acts as a catalyst for the events that unfold. Her role as their leader is passed on to Gemma Chan‘s Sersi. So, her signing up for multiple sequels might have an implication on where exactly the story is heading. It also opens the window for other Eternals that passed away in the story to make a return at some point down the line. It also might hint that Chloé Zhao might have mapped out these characters’ future, as she even hinted that the inclusion of Harry Styles as Starfox was a “package deal” when she signed on for the project.
