  • ‘SHANG-CHI’ Producer Teases More Ta Lo in the MCU’s Future

‘SHANG-CHI’ Producer Teases More Ta Lo in the MCU’s Future

It seems we might have just scratched the surface with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ new location called Ta Lo. In the film, it’s the sanctuary of the Great Protector and many other mystical creatures of Chinese mythology. While we did get a brief history lesson on the purpose of the village, there was no real exploration beyond this specific location.

Luckily, it seems we’ve only scratched the surface as Marvel Studios producer Jonathan Schwartz hinted that we might learn more about this mysterious location in the franchise’s future, as they tried to get a clear confirmation where this mysterious dimension takes place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I think more will be revealed about Ta Lo in the future. But I wouldn’t want to put a label on it just yet.

    Jonathan Schwartz

He plays coy on if this is an additional dimension. The challenge is that the existence of the Multiverse parallel to other dimensions, as The Direct points out, creates the question of how the rules apply. It’s uncertain if this is some kind of pocket dimension connected. The fact we get to explore more of it is an exciting prospect, especially when they teased the existence of mysterious cities that once existed within this realm.

Perhaps there’s a bigger connection to other mythology from Marvel Comics that will be built upon as the world continues to grow. With rumors pointing at the inclusion of Atlantis in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, we might see a very different MCU once it fully expands throughout Phase 4.

  • Chloé Zhao Reveals How Denis Villeneuve’s Films Influenced ‘ETERNALS’

Chloé Zhao Reveals How Denis Villeneuve’s Films Influenced ‘ETERNALS’

Chloé Zhao and Denis Villeneuve participated in an interview for Harper’s BAZAAR to discuss the power of the cinematic experience and their worries with the changes in the industry. They both made no secret of the fact that they appreciated each other’s work, gaining a lot of inspiration from each other.

Villeneuve is well known for his love of the cinematic experience and as he has repeatedly stated that the big screen is part of its language. In this interview, the Canadian director did not hide his support for IMAX, which according to him increases the feeling of intimacy with the characters. Chloé Zhao, whose previous film Nomadland was also screened in IMAX, also shares in that belief. She goes on to say that while pitching Eternals, she used stills from his films. She also mentioned that she has always appreciated creators who have a strong hand in world-building:

Oh, my gosh. Okay, well, I would like to apply for a job on your set to be your assistant. You know, when I went to pitch Eternals, I had stills from your films as references. I’m naturally drawn to filmmakers who have a very strong hand in world building. When I watch your films, even though they’re of different genres, from Sicario to Arrival to Prisoners and then Blade Runner 2049, you managed to build such visceral worlds I can feel and almost touch.

    Chloé Zhao
    Marvel Studios’ Eternals

If you look at the filmography of both directors, you will conclude that they both come from similar filmmaking backgrounds. Both have roots in non-fiction cinema, where they focus on reflective and intimate experiences with their characters. In both of them, one can notice the influence of direct cinema, which has been later successfully incorporated into mainstream cinema.

Although the premiere of Eternals is still ahead of us, promotional materials tease some visual inspirations taken from Denis‘ works. Among others, the Eternals’ ship with its brutalist and austere shape, embedded in the natural landscape, brings to mind the monumental Heptapod ship in a similar aesthetic from Villeneuve‘s Arrival.

  • ‘DOCTOR STRANGE’ Sequel Wraps Production on Reshoots

‘DOCTOR STRANGE’ Sequel Wraps Production on Reshoots

It looks like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has wrapped production on its reshoots, as makeup artist Tricia Sawyer took to her Instagram to share that they’ve wrapped up production and aren’t “Strange anymore.” Kevin Feige hinted that the original production ended back in April. So, they must’ve entered production on reshoots at some point in the last few months and just finished up. Whatever they may have adapted, the Scarlet Witch is definitely involved.

In the photo, she’s standing next to Elizabeth Olsen as they celebrate the production’s end. The film is set to premiere in March and after Shang-Chi‘s recent success, it seems unlikely they’ll postpone any future releases. It’s ending now gives the film plenty of time to work on the special effects ahead of its release. The film will explore potentially a variety of dimensions that may offer very unique designs. We can’t wait to see how it mixes things up once Strange explores the very multiverse he may have had a hand in creating.

There’s still a lot of question surrounding the project. Marvel Studios has been keeping a tight lip on the film’s production, especially with Doctor Strange’s appearance in the near future. What If…? only recently explore an alternative dimension version of the character, who might even potentially appear in the live-action film. He’ll also appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home and had a very prominent role in the first trailer. It’s uncertain how that’ll fit into the ever-expanding multiverse but here’s hoping we get a tease sooner rather than later.

  • Disney’s ‘HAUNTED MANSION’ Reboot Adds ‘LOKI’s Owen Wilson

Disney’s ‘HAUNTED MANSION’ Reboot Adds ‘LOKI’s Owen Wilson

It looks like Owen Wilson has eyed a few more projects together with Disney, as Hollywood Reporter revealed that the Loki actor will star in the upcoming reboot of Haunted Mansion. It’ll join another popular adaptation of one of Disney’s popular theme park rides. Director Justin Simien is famous for his work on Dear White People and Bad Hair Day, but the upcoming horror-comedy will be his first big-budget adaptation. It’s our first update on the film since LaKeith Stanfield and Tiffany Haddish joined the project back in July.

The story still remains under wraps, but it’ll not venture too far away from the 2003 film featuring Eddie Murphy. It’ll explore a family that moves into the titular mansion that is being, you guessed it, haunted. It’s eyeing an October production start in Atlanta. Disney just recently had a successful launch with Jungle Cruise and seems to be eyeing various theme park attractions. They just recently greenlit a sequel and we might see many more get adapted.

There’s also the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot that’s been in production for some time, which was announced back in June 2020. Margot Robbie and Christina Hodson joined the project and will revive the popular franchise that may have been their most successful adaptation of a park ride-themed film. It’ll be curious if Haunted Mansion‘s success might also see potential sequels moving forward.

  • RUMOR: Netflix Rebooting ‘POKÈMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU’ To Tie Into New TV Series

RUMOR: Netflix Rebooting ‘POKÈMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU’ To Tie Into New TV Series

Here’s a curious rumor. In July, Lucifer‘s Joe Henderson was hired by Netflix to develop a live-action adaptation of Pokémon for the streaming service. It looks like they may have some bigger plans, as Illuminerdi shared the news that they’re also looking to develop a film that interconnects with the ongoing series. They do not go into detail but they do word that it won’t be a continuation of the popular Detective Pikachu film but act like a reboot. It’s uncertain if this means it’s an actual reboot of the 2019 film, or rather simply meant as a reboot of the franchise overall as they also highlight that no continuation of the Warner Bros. film by Rob Letterman is planned.

It makes sense they’ll reboot the franchise from scratch. However, it seems unlikely the film will release ahead of the TV series. It seems like a safer bet to establish the world, as they might try to include hints at a bigger picture. It would be great if they utilize these films as highlights of side characters arcs, or even as the tournament to end a seasonal arc on a high note.

It won’t be cheap adapting this unique world filled with creatures that state their own name in repetition. The film did an amazing job selling a living and breathing world filled with Pokémon and it’ll be interesting if Netflix takes a different direction to make it stand out from the previous entry. The combination of realism with the cartoon designs worked surprisingly well but they might take a very different direction. It’ll join a variety of Netflix series eyeing a live-action adaptation of Anime and it won’t be the last.

  • Sony Moves ‘VENOM’ Sequel One Last Time

Sony Moves ‘VENOM’ Sequel One Last Time

Following the surprising box office success of Marvel Studios Shang-Chi, Sony has chosen to move Venom: Let There Be Carnage one more time, this time moving it forward to an October 1st release.

The sequel has moved several times over the past year and change, recently moving to October 15th from a planned September 17th release. The new October 1st date puts the film’s release almost exactly one year from it’s initial October 2, 2020 target date. The new date also means the sequel will debut exactly 3 years after the original which opened to over $80M, an October record at the time.

Tickets for the Andy Serkis-helmed sequel will go on sale this Wednesday. Venom: Let There Be Carnage will see Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock face off with Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kasaday who, after biting Brock, becomes one of Marvel’s most unhinged characters: Carnage.

  • ‘DUNE’ Is More Relevant Than Ever And Worth The Wait

‘DUNE’ Is More Relevant Than Ever And Worth The Wait

Dune is a book legend. Next to Isaac Asimov‘s Foundation and Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001: A Space OdysseyDune is the most influential sci-fi book ever written. Social media discourse has repeatedly compared Dune to Star Wars or Game of Thrones, but the truth is that if it were not for the existence of Frank Herbert’s masterpiece, we never would have seen those films. The themes and issues handled by Frank Herbert in his books could be talked about at length, but for now, let’s focus on the debut of the 2021 film adaptation, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The buzz surrounding the movie provides a good opportunity to talk about Frank Herbert‘s Dune and why the upcoming Denis Villeneuve adaption is worth the wait.

Dune is a coming-of-age story of a young man named Paul Atreides who is frightened of leaving Caladan – his home planet full of water and a variety of life. House Atreides is supposed to go Arrakis, also known as Dune, which is a desert planet with a rough ecosystem. However, Dune is full of spice called melange, a psychoactive chemical that is the main natural resource in the entire Empire. Melange enables interstellar travels and without it, the economy of the empire would collapse. As soon as Paul enters the Arrakis’ environment imbued with spice, his powers awaken.

This contrast between Caladan and Dune is very relatable and easy for the audience to identify with. Most of us live in an inhabitable environment. We don’t have to wear special stillsuits to keep us moisturized, and gigantic sandworms aren’t our daily window view. The chaotic environment of Arrakis led Villeneuve to draw some parallels to Earth’s own changing climate:

No matter what you believe, Earth is changing, and we will have to adapt,” he says. That’s why I think that Dune, this book, was written in the 20th century. It was a distant portrait of the reality of oil, capitalism, and exploitation, or even overexploitation, of Earth. Today, things are worse. It’s a coming-of-age story, but also a call for action for the youth.

Behold Dune: An Exclusive Look at Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and More, May 2020

Dune is a story about self-adapting to the new environment with a metaphysical journey into deep human self-consciousness. It is also a story about teaching society to love the planet and that nature is true power and even a god to humans who must live in symbiosis with it. The next few years in Hollywood will see an increase of films tackling environmental issues and climate changes. Nowadays, we don’t see many tentpole movies addressing these issues and fears of our planet warning us.

Frank Herbert predicted many modern problems such as overexploitation of Earth, the short-termism of capitalism, monopoly, religion interfering in politics, and of course —environmental threats. Dune teaches us how to love our planet and that even the roughest environment has some wonders. Shai-Hulud (the Fremen term for a Sandworm) is the synonym of God, showing that nature is a true god to people, and we can’t interfere with the ecosystem. Naturally, melange is a great analogy to oil, which is the most important resource in our world. Herbert doesn’t hide his anti-colonial statements in his book and shows House Harkonnens as brutal colonizers who murder indigenous peoples for power and resources.

In Herbert’s books, we don’t also see computers or androids because of an event called Butlerian Jihad, a war between humans and thinking machines. Herbert’s main goal was to show how humans can develop their minds and consciousness over the next 20,000 years into the future. In the Dune universe, human computers named Mentants, serve as war strategists and the rulers’ left-hand. The right-hand is usually occupied by the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood which is the pseudo-religious organization of all-women. Even if Dune presents a patriarchal society, Bene Gesserit is a great example of a feminist view of Herbert. Despite the fact that their idea was always to serve, the truth is they controlled and manipulated the empire over the centuries.

Their goal was to create Kwisatz Haderach – a male Bene Gesserit, who would be able to see the future. They also used religion as a form of defense, seeding their Missionaria Protectiva to a more primitive culture so that the Sisterhood could take advantage of them when those seeds grew to full-fledged legends.

Although no aliens appeared in Dune (they were only hinted at in the encyclopedia), the books feature strange society groups. Such societies include the guild navigators, who resemble human beings in no way, as the large daily portion of melange has turned them into strange, “fish-like” creations. Another such group is, of course, the Bene Tleilaxians, who looked more like vampires than humans.

Their society has isolated itself from the Landsraad and closed itself off from their culture, practicing genetic modifications, which are not necessarily ethical. Then, of course, we have Leto II, who at the end of his life also did not resemble a human being. That, however, is a story for another time. It’s both fascinating but also a little scary that for so many thousands of years humanity never encountered alien civilizations, though they had a plan for a potential form of defense against them). Humanity has evolved to the point where at some point there is no longer any definition of a human being besides passing the Gom Jabbar test.

Moreover, Herbert tackles the problem a criticism of authority and blindly following messianic figures. For the most part, Paul’s journey is very Cambellian but as the storyline progresses, Herbert deconstructs that narrative at the end of the book. Dune is not a white savior story about the chosen one. Herbert’s criticism of messianic figures is addressed to people and society who create their religious myths and legends about their leader.

In the 1960s, there was a group that practiced drug orgies (and more) to unite around the ideology of their “chosen one.” The group even killed in his name: the Manson family. Admittedly, Dune was written before the murder of Sharon Tate on Cielo Drive, but you can see how Herbert foresaw and the attitudes he criticized in his work – not to follow individuals, imposing their religion, ideology on you as the only right and unquestionable one. It just so happened that in 1969, which is when the tragic event in Polanski’s home occurred, Herbert releases Messiah of Dune, which takes on jihad (i.e. religious warfare) and the deaths of billions of people in the universe that resulted from Paul’s actions as the messiah of the Fremen.

The QAnon phenomenon is also connected with the themes of Dune (there’s quite a good docuseries on HBO MAX about that which I recommend). Although QAnon and Paul Atreides don’t have much in common, the cult and religion that surround them do. It points out how dangerous a religious and almost sacred perspective on authorities can be, especially when it’s paired with politics. Even if the Dune: Part One isn’t adapting the whole book but two-thirds, we may see some seeds and of that theme.

Dune is probably one of the last chances for a new and ambitious sci-fi series in Hollywood. Blade Runner 2049 was a box office fiasco and many people have already doomed Dune to the same kind of failure. The pandemic and simultaneous distribution don’t help the overall situation, but Dune being a financial disaster is the last thing I’d like to see. It’s an amazing universe with a great potential for sequels, spin-offs, and prequels. The entire franchise has the opportunity to become something fresh in the mainstream, knowing that Dune isn’t a typical sci-fi story. Seeing all the praise coming from Venice, the only thing I can do is encourage you to go to the cinema or legally stream Dune which will surely be the defining blockbuster of this decade.

Dune will theaters and HBO Max on October 22nd.

  • ‘SHANG-CHI’ Eviscerates Labor Day Box Office Record, Now Targeting $85M+ Opening Weekend

‘SHANG-CHI’ Eviscerates Labor Day Box Office Record, Now Targeting $85M+ Opening Weekend

Marvel Studios Shang-Chi and The Legends of The Ten Rings is on pace to potentially double early opening weekend box office predictions, destroying the previous Labor Day record along the way. Good word of mouth and return viewers have pushed the predictions, which were originally set around $45M range, to an expected $85M or more for the long 4-day weekend. The film has already surpassed the opening weekend take for The Suicide Squad and now has Black Widow in its sights.

Shang-Chi took in a combined $29.6M between Thursday night previews and Friday’s full day. With it being a holiday weekend in the U.S., even one where audiences traditionally don’t flock to theaters, the buzz around the film could lead to some pretty impressive numbers Saturday and, especially, Sunday, given that people don’t have to head back to work on Monday.

The origin story has been equally popular with fans and critics, holding at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, where it has a 98% audience score. That score lines up nicely with the the A grade from Cinemascore. All this comes at a time when studios are divided between exclusive theatrical and hybrid releases. Shang-Chi’s success (it’s still possible it could beat pandemic box office champ F9’s opening take) will be a significant data point in the discussion about how to proceed for the remainder of 2021 and early 2022 as the Delta variant surges around world will impact theaters.

  • The Russo Brothers Negotiating Their Return to Marvel Studios

The Russo Brothers Negotiating Their Return to Marvel Studios

Two years after they completed an incredible 6-year run in the MCU, Joe and Anthony Russo have entered into negotiations to return to Marvel Studios. The Russos struck gold for Marvel Studios with 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and completed the Captain America trilogy with 2016’s Captain America: Civil War before moving on to helm the 2-part conclusion to the Infinity Saga in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. The tandem made it clear that they had planned to take a break from the MCU but now, according to The Wall Street Journal, they’ve begun planning their return.

As exciting as that sounds, however, it is worth noting that negotiations with the directing duo recently reached an impasse in the wake of Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit against Disney following the hybrid release of Black Widow. WSJ reports that the uncertainty about how films will be distributed and how the talent will be paid in the new landscape carved out by COVID has become a speed bump in the Russos’ return.

In 2019, the brothers made no bones about the project that would be most apt to entice them to return: Secret Wars. With Loki openly teasing a multiversal war and the multiverse breaking open in Spider-Man: No Way Home, a Secret Wars film seems like more and more of a sure thing. Indeed, I’ve heard on several occasions-ranging from 2018 to just a few months ago-that an adaptation of Secret Wars is on the big board at Marvel Studios.

As both studios and creatives navigate these uncharted waters, it’s no surprise that one side or the other (or both) would have concerns about how to share the financial pie. There’s still not enough of a sample size to prove whether or not Disney’s Premier Access strategy, which they employed with Black Widow, can work; on the other hand, it’s hard to imagine large studios continuing to sit on films for years while waiting for the COVID pandemic to “end.” Given the Russos passion for Marvel Comics and their past successes with adapting comic book story lines, let’s all hope Disney can find a way to bring them back into the fold.

  • ‘NO TIME TO DIE’ Final Trailer Uploaded Early on YouTube

‘NO TIME TO DIE’ Final Trailer Uploaded Early on YouTube

Many films were faced with quite a few delays since the pandemic hit the world back in 2020. Among them was the next entry in the James Bond 007 franchise featuring Daniel Craig in the titular role. No Time to Die is eyeing an October 8th release and it looks like the trailer has accidentally gotten released early on YouTube, as it is currently not listed but available in the official James Bond 007 YouTube’s trailer playlist. You can check out the final trailer for the upcoming film here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JUyLgwrC4Y&list=PLroUsGOhJjhJB1sG1cZDDzDZOJs7rbeTd

The footage includes some iconic moments from his previous films and highlights every mission he has gone through. It seems to highlight that the upcoming entry will be the grand finale for Craig‘s time as the iconic UK agent. At least, the trailer is trying to sell it like it was the Avengers: Endgame of the franchise. What continues to stand out with the latest entry is the action. We get a bit more from the car stunt that was teased in earlier trailers as well as glimpses of the various weaponry that he’ll fall back on. He even is working alongside Lashana Lynch‘s 007, who took over the title in his absence.

It’s not uncommon for trailers to get uploaded ahead of their release, but it’s curious that it’s set as unlisted. The official Twitter account did share a special sneak peak focused on the Aston Martin. So, it may have been to kick off today’s final trailer release but was accidentally available when you access the playlist.
