As first shared by @OP_Netflix_Fan on Twitter, Netflix’s Director of Original Series Ted Biaselli has shared some details about how the team is tackling the adaptation and just how involved Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, is with the upcoming live-action series during a recording of the Gayest Episode Ever podcast. Anime adaptations haven’t had the greatest track record. Luckily, Biaselli highlights the importance of that very concept that an anime adaptation is more than just recreating iconic shots or simply using the IP for the sake of it, as highlighted in the recording.
The pressure of live-action anime has always been a disaster and I don’t want that on my record. I want to be the guy who understands what they’re making, and, you know, the intention behind the source material and how do we translate that to bring that to life. As opposed to recreate shot-for-shot or as opposed to taking the IP and throwing everything else away. There is a middle ground to understanding the throughline and the truth that is in all the source material and then figuring out how that makes sense in a live-action cinematic approach.
Ted BiaselliThere’s a sigh of relief hearing those words as many adaptations, anime or not, have focused primarily on recreating the shot composition of the anime rather than focusing on what made it stand out. Cowboy Bebop struggled to reach its audience as there were concerns it strayed too far from the source material while only visually recreating it rather than truly embracing what made the anime the cultural milestone it is today. Luckily, Netflix is taking it quite seriously and Eiichiro Oda is actively involved to ensure that they don’t go “missing the point” at any time while bringing the project to life.
I’ve been with One Piece for the past three years, four years actually, and as far as I am concerned it’s now about how fast you can get it on. My little mantra is “getting right before right now.” And it takes a while and that’s okay. We’re working directly with Eiichiro Oda, who is the creator. He’s got a vision and he’s also never worked in television. So, it’s a give and take sort of education of what works in live-action, what doesn’t work in live-action. And then he tells us: “You guys are missing the point, that’s not what the scene is about. This is what it’s about.”
Ted BiaselliIt also sounds like Oda’s getting a new look at how Western productions go. He’s been heavily involved with the scripts for animated films and anime, but a live-action adaptation is a new beast entirely. Still, knowing just how involved he is does add even more excitement than the project already offered with the enthusiasm the cast and crew shared throughout production. Here’s hoping that some updates on the series aren’t too far away now.

Water 7 Arc Will be Featured in ‘One Piece Odyssey’
There were quite a few questions on what we should expect from One Piece‘s latest game that takes a new direction. Unlike the previous game, One Piece is once again exploring the concept of a Straw Hat-focused RPG titled One Piece Odyssey. The story sees our favorite pirates trapped on an island after their ship the Thousand Sunny is surprisingly destroyed.
There were some worries that the game may restrict the team to a rather simple island without much variation. Yet, we were then surprised with the reveal that you’ll be visiting memories of the Straw Hats crews throughout the adventure. That not only confirmed various new locations and storylines to revisit, but it also opened up the question of what storylines may find their way to the story. So far, we only knew about Alabasta but now it seems Water 7 Arc is also going to be playable.
In a tweet shared by @newworldartur, they include an interesting scan that reveals the information on One Piece Odyssey‘s next playable level. It offers the first tease of Kaku’s appearance, who’ll likely be a boss in the storyline, and it also seems that Franky’s original pre-time skip design will be available. It’s unclear though if the character is the one we know from the main storyline, or the straw hats meet a version from their memories.
This new showcase is very likely also going to be followed by a new trailer. The game is set to release in January to kick off the year and is also still part of the 25th anniversary of One Piece. So, we’ll likely find out more once the next trailer drops and gives us a good look at how the adaptation may twist the original story, as it’ll feature Straw Hats that have already lived through these events.

Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ is a Cinematic Ocean of Potential
The following article exploring the potential cinematic potential of Netflix’s One Piece adaptation was inspired by chatting with some great people on the Discord fan page for the live-action adaptation. Netflix has been anxiously looking for its next major hit by investing quite a bit into upcoming projects. Right now, Jonathan Entwistle has been quite busy developing a cinematic universe based on the popular Saban superhero team, the Power Rangers. They are actively looking for their next Stranger Things, as it not only became quite the rating hit in its fourth season but also is now set to build its own cinematic universe. With three candidates on their radar to take that duty, it does seem like the upcoming live-action adaptation of One Piece may be exactly what they are looking for.
As of now, showrunners Matt Owens and Steve Maeda are working on the first season of the series with no announcement of future seasons hinted at so far. There have been talks of the budget for this series to potentially rival Marvel Studios’ outings, which hints at the hope for this project to become a tentpole of the streaming service. So, it does seem safe to assume that there’s hope to build more out of just the base series once the newly formed Straw Hat pirates enter the Grand Line.
Netflix’s upcoming series will be an ambitious adaptation of a series that is currently still running and has over 1,000+ chapters under its belt. Eiichiro Oda has become well known for his ambition and love for worldbuilding which is reflected in his work. Even as we visit various islands alongside the Straw Hats’ journey, we also meet others that are following along on their very own journeys. These have commonly been slowly revealed with each new chapter release.
The first season will seemingly include the cover story focused on Helmeppo and Coby’s adventures becoming Marines, as they’ve also announced the casting of Garp who doesn’t directly appear in the original East Blue Saga. Yet, there are some other stories that may not fit into the overarching storyline to further develop characters that become especially relevant later down the line. One of the most recent cover stories even managed to tie directly into the events that are unfolding in the story.
In a way, some stories might be worth their own exploration as spinoff series or specials from the main storyline. Portgas D. Ace’s story after reuniting with Luffy in Alabasta could act as a bridge to his future appearance while also exploring his backstory as a member of the Whitebeard pirates. It would help further establish characters that usually only get a short amount of screen time while further building the mystique of who they are and what role they have in the story.
There’s also the aftermath exploring what the Baroque Works members are up to after Alabasta, which could become its own project. While there’s no necessity to create a cinematic universe based around One Piece, the original manga sets up enough opportunities to do so. The Grand Line is filled with possibilities and it wouldn’t be too surprising if the potential of expanding this series might be a selling point for Netflix.
If cinematic universes are what streamers are looking for nowadays, One Piece has the most potential based on the existing material alone. Its creator is also involved with the project and they could potentially establish their own stories that further expand the world we live in. Perhaps getting a chance to explore the different sides of the Marines with a series that introduces some of the recurring members we meet throughout the Straw Hat journey.
The biggest challenge the series will face is establishing a completely new island with its own politics, history, and so much more. Perhaps taking some of that weight off by using spinoff projects to build up some elements that could muddy the experience. We don’t need to know the full structure of the Marines’ internal hierarchy if another project already covers the details through the lens of a member building his path through the ranks; potentially even hinting at a story element we wouldn’t see until further down into the New World.
While the direction of this series also strongly depends on how popular the first season ends up being, there definitely is a potential to do so. The upcoming live-action adaptation will set the groundwork for where this project goes and how it adapts the original manga series. If the first season is a success and viewers end up falling in love with the world, there’s a lot more to show them why they should stick around to uncover all secrets of the Grand Line.

‘One Piece Film Red’ More Than Triples ‘Stampede’s Entire Domestic Box Office on Opening Day
It’s looking good for Black Adam to top the box office once again. The film is showing a bit more of its Dwayne Johnson-like hold after seeing some bigger drops throughout the week. As it stands, the film is likely to end its second weekend with $17M. The biggest advantage of this DC film lies in the fact that there’s no real competition so far and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is surely going to change that once it releases next weekend with an already impressive $175M+ opening weekend prediction.
Hot on its heels is One Piece Film Red, which has finally been released stateside. It’s currently pulling in $10M+ from 2,410 locations. It’s pretty much performing as expected by Crunchyroll, its distributor but sadly it’s not going to pass Demon Slayer: Mugen Train‘s record which pulled in $21M domestically. Still, the film pulled in an A CinemaScore and had a 75% viewership between the ages of 18 to 34, which highlights an interesting trend.
One should consider that this film is a spinoff storyline based around the latest events of a 1,000+ chapter manga series. As many believed only long-time readers would be drawn into the latest entry, One Piece might be drawing in a new generation of readers already. It should also be highlighted that Red pulled in 4.8M on Friday, which is more than three times what Stamped pulled in 2019. Not just it’s domestic opening but its entire run which was around 1.3M at the time. So, this is quite the win for a franchise that started in 1997.

Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Series Adds a Key Arlong Park Character
Those excited about the first live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda‘s One Piece have been facing quite a dry spell since production wrapped up some time ago. We still have no exact release date for the project or any hint on when we might expect the promotion to start. Tudum sadly didn’t offer any real updates and it seems we might have to wait until next year for any official update.
Luckily, some actors have taken to their official CVs to update them with their newly acquired roles that have offered some minor castings during our wait. Now, another has been spotted by @OP_Netflix_Fan as Rory Acton Burnell has revealed he is taking on the role of Captain Nezumi. For those that might not know the character, he is a Marine that has a minor but relevant role in the events of the Arlong Park arc.
There is some surprise to this casting, as there was the opportunity that they’d potentially merge characters for a more consistent storyline throughout the East Blue saga. Most of the storylines don’t directly connect, and it seemed like a great opportunity to have elements from others potentially tie into the events of others. We ourselves theorized that perhaps Nezumi might get skipped for Captain Morgen, but it seems we were off if they still have a role in the story. We still have to see if any official announcements may offer more insight into how they tackle the project.

New ‘One Piece’ BTS Set Photos Tease How They Filmed on the Going Merry
As production on Netflix’s upcoming live-action One Piece has wrapped some time ago, the news well has certainly dried up. We still know very little about when we might expect a release or even an official glimpse at the cast or set beyond what we got earlier this year. Still, even if Tudum didn’t give us something to hold on to, it seems that a few new photos have found their way online to tie us over.
While it doesn’t reveal anything new for the One Piece series, it does give us a glimpse behind-the-scenes on how exactly they tackled shots of the cast on the Going Merry. As shared by @dogy_logy, we get a look on how they made use of various screens to film anything they needed to on the stationary version of the boat.
It looks like they needed quite a few cranes to keep every element they needed stationary. They likely used a screen that will represent them being on the ocean or near an island of some kind. Of course, we don’t know how much time they’ll spend on their iconic ship mostly due to uncertainty how they may have structured the season.
Still, it looks like we can expect some fun shenanigans on the ship and hopefully the team behind the One Piece series will keep those fun moments of the crew just interacting alive with the adaptation. Of course, big parts of their early ventures take place on the various islands of the East Blue which we’re still hoping to get a better look at in the near future besides Baratie and Windmill Village.

Netflix’s Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Adds 2 More to Cast
There was a lot of hope and excitement for Tudum to potentially offer our next glimpse at the live-action adaptation of One Piece. Netflix has seemingly been all-in with the project and highlighted it during their big event of the year. Yet, it somehow only got a brief mention in Japan’s Tudum section without any news update hitting the web. While we might have to wait a bit longer for any real insight into how the production is going, especially with it having wrapped production not too long ago, it seems we can at least add two more to the series cast.
According to their CVs, actor Nathan Castle has joined the production as the character of Koushirou while Brett Williams will play Merry. For those not familiar with the story and remembering the boat being named Going Merry, Williams is not playing the Straw Hats iconic boat that they secured in the East Blue. He’s actually taking on the role of Kaya’s butler, who we meet in Syrup Village alongside Jacob Romero Gibson‘s Usopp.
In the case of Castle, he is set to play Koushirou who plays an important role in the backstory for Mackenyu‘s Zoro. He is nonother than Roronoa’s swordmaster and the father of Kuina. We would later also find out more about his family’s lineage but in the East Blue Saga, which the upcoming Netflix series will adapt, he’s mainly featured in the flashback exploring what inspires Zoro’s goal. It’ll be interesting to see if they might allude to some elements that didn’t get revealed in the manga until almost 25 years later.

TUDUM: ‘One Piece’ Segment May Have Teased a First Glimpse at the Series’ Score
TUDUM was quite the event for everything that Netflix has planned to release throughout the following months. Sadly, there was a noticeable absence of One Piece during the Global event as it seems they aren’t ready yet to release more information. Yet, there was at least a small tease during the TUDUM Japan segment that highlighted the series is still in production.
Given how big One Piece is in Japan, it makes sense it would still get a reveal during that segment but it didn’t include any real news outside of highlighting its main cast once more. There is however a rather interesting score being used while showcasing some segments from the manga alongside the cast video that was released when they were initially confirmed to be playing the East Blue crew, as shared by @newworldartur.
There’s something quite cheerful about this music and it would definitely seem like a fitting score for an adventure that Monkey D. Luffy would set out on. There hasn’t been an official confirmation of who exactly is involved with the score, but speculation online has hinted towards it being The Witcher‘s Sonya Belousova. The talented researchers from @OPLAfandom released their theory early in August and the composer has released a piece that almost sounds like it would perfectly fit into the franchise.
It would’ve been great to get some details out of TUDUM but it was a project mostly focused on current projects that have at least a set release date with only a few teases of what’s to come. So, we can only speculate if the music piece used is from the actual work from this project or is simply something they’ve chosen cause it seemed fitting. Still, if it even is just a tease of the style of the theme we can expect, it definitely feels like a perfect choice for this pirate adventure.
