A long time ago, before Netflix’s live-action One Piece series even started production, we got a good look at Sanji actor, Taz Skylar, showing off his skills kicking. It’s one of the character’s iconic aspects besides his ability to turn anything into a delicious meal. Many wondered how they’d attempt to bring his moves to life, especially in how flashy they are showcased in the original manga by Eiichiro Oda. A new video from Skylar highlights just how far his training has come.
In a new video as shared by @OP_Netflix_Fan on Twitter, we get a good look at just how far his training has come along. Skylar has actively shared how he’s prepared for the One Piece role, such as attending kitchen courses alongside training with his stunt doubles. We sadly still haven’t gotten a good shot of him in costume, and how they might tackle his moves cinematically, but the dedication showcased is definitely praise-worthy.
— ONE PIECE NETFLIX FAN (@OP_Netflix_Fan) July 4, 2022
We haven’t seen much on how the training has come together for Zoro actor Mackenyu, but there was a leaked production image that hinted at these the three-sword style. One Piece continues to shape up as a promising project that’ll hopefully set a new direction for live-action manga adaptations. With many promising practical sets and some visually stunning designs, the only thing we haven’t gotten a glimpse at from the project is their costumes. so, we’ll see if they might give us our first look once they’ve wrapped production and entered the post-production phase.
When the first trailer dropped for One Piece Odyssey, a new RPG game set in the world created by Eiichiro Oda, many had started to wonder where the missing Straw Hat member Jimbei was. He joined the crew during the Wano arc but has been built up as a member of the crew ever since they entered Fishman Island. Well, his absence actually connects to when production started on the new One Piece game.
In a new developer diary from Bandai Namco, producer Katsuaki Tsuzuki shared some insight into how they brought the game to life. In it, he reveals that they started work on the project in the middle of the Whole Cake Island Arc. Now, it stands out that Jimbei hasn’t joined the crew officially until the final arc before they were forced to split up. Plus, it implies that they’ve started work on this project all the way back during the arc’s run. So, they approached Oda in 2019 to help out with designs, but they may have been working on the game for around five years now.
So, it’s no wonder that later additions from Wano aren’t also appearing. While they do typically plan things in advance, game production is very time-consuming. They are also working with ILCA to create the JPRG, which offers an island that has its own little world to offer that includes elements from across One Piece‘s long history. There is a chance they might add some newer members to join the Straw Hats through DLC, which would open up the possibility of Jimbei or maybe even characters like Carrot or Yamato to join their cause. So, we’ll see what the game may have to offer.
One Piece is a major project worldwide and with 25 years on its back, the story is slowly nearing its end. Netflix has quickly jumped on board with Tomorrow Studio to find a talented cast and crew to bring the series to life in live-action. We’ve gotten a tease from the production sets that tease a massive project that has been filming since the beginning of the year. While we may have to wait a bit longer for more updates, it seems that one actor has wrapped production.
Actor McKinley Belcher shared at the end of May that he had joined the production of Netflix’s One Piece series. Yet, it turns out he may have already wrapped up his work on the project. Belcher took to his personal Instagram to share that he’s leaving Cape Town, seemingly confirming he’s finished his work as Arlong. So, it seems that he’s been working for around a month on bringing his sequences to life.
Some may be wondering how that works considering that we’ve recently got the tease they were working on the Baratie episodes, especially as Doctor Who director Emma Sullivan was confirmed working on them. Yet, they aren’t necessarily filming sequences from the manga back-to-back and may be working on various sequences simultaneously. It’s not uncommon especially as they have to work around actors’ tight schedules. Still, it’s geat to know that the production is coming along.
Fezzy returns, as he joins Suki and Joe to take a closer look at all the great things that Chapter 1052 of One Piece has to offer, as well as discuss what the future has in store ahead of the final chapter before the series goes on a four-week hiatus.
First shared by @OnePieceNxBr on Twitter, an agency site for hair and make-up artist Amanda Ross McDonald reveals she is actively working on Project Panda, the name of One Piece‘s production. What sticks out is that alongside the previous three directors, they also confirm one more is part of the team. The list reveals that Josef Kubota Wladyka may be directing episodes of the series spearheaded by Steven Maeda and MattOwens.
Wlydka has been building up quite the filmography, as he not only worked on quite a few episodes of Netflix’s iconic Narcos and Narcos: Mexico series, but also recently worked on HBO Max’s break-out hit Tokyo Vice. He’s also worked on Fear the Walking Dead and The Terror. So, he has quite a varied background that’ll definitely come in handy
While Fezzy sadly didn’t make this week’s recording, Joe and Suki are keeping you covered on all things One Piece that has transpired, such as the big showcase during Geeked Week, and new castings for the live-action Netflix series, recapping chapters 1050 and 1051. It’s an episode that shouldn’t be missed out on.
We just recently got the announcement of some additional cast members, as well as a first official look at the impressive sets from Netflix’s upcoming live-action One Piece series. It was announced that actor Craig Fairbrass would be taking on the role of Chef Zeff, Sanji’s mentor, and father figure. Yet, his agency, United Agents, may have accidentally also revealed who is directing the episodes from the Baratie.
In an official tweet congratulating Fairbrass, they reveal that he’ll appear in episodes directed by Emma Sullivan. So far, we only knew about Daredevil‘s Marc Jobst, which we reported back in September, and later on, would find out about Lost in Space‘s Tim Southam. So, it’s our third confirmed director on the project. It’s also our first confirmation that Sullivan will be tackling multiple episodes and hints that Baratie will not be told in just one singular one.
It’s great to get more and more details in regard to what the series has to offer. Netflix does oddly rarely announce its directors in advance, but it’s great to get some teases of who’s bringing this vision of the East Blue to life. Before One Piece, Sullivan has directed quite a variety of shows that include The Watch, Doctor Who,4 O’Clock Club, Call the Midwife, Silent Witness, and more. So, she definitely is no stranger to
When the message arrived from Eiichiro Oda that he was going to take a break to restructure the upcoming final saga of One Piece, many theorized that it might still be some time until they actually jump into the final steps of the iconic manga franchise. Yet, it turns out that it wasn’t just a generalization.
During a live stream to promote the upcoming One Piece Film RED, Oda’s editor came in and teased that there will be some special concept art released building up towards the return of One Piece after the break titled “The Road to Laugh Tale.” Yet, he also went on to confirm that Chapter 1054 will be the official start for the final saga and the Straw Hat crew will move on from Wano. It’ll be made available with Weekly Shonen Jump #34.

So, we have three more chapters to wrap up the current storyline which is still hard to believe considering how long the saga went on. Still, it seems that the final years of the manga franchise have begun. Don’t worry that this means we’re only getting a few more chapters, but as it is highlighted as a “saga,” we might have a few more yers ahead of us before the story wraps up. There’s no specific timeframe or chapter count given, but it’s still bizarre to think after 25 years, the end is near.
It’s insane to think that mangaka Eiichiro Oda has been working on One Piece for over 25 years. And, throughout that time he hasn’t taken many breaks as the series follows the Weekly Shonen Jump release format, even if he takes some breaks now and then. As he’s wrapping up work on what may be the biggest saga he’s ever told with Wano, Oda has officially announced that it’s going on a month’s hiatus from Jump’s Issue #30 to #33. He shared the message on Twitter, which was translated by @WSJ_manga.
— ONE PIECE スタッフ【公式】/ Official (@Eiichiro_Staff) June 7, 2022
He jokingly shared a message in regards to his upcoming hiatus, where he highlights that he is trying to reorganize himself before tackling the final arc for the manga. Now, while he does say he wants to finish it as soon as possible, it doesn’t mean the next arc may take as long as Wano did, if not longer. Still, it’s great that he’s taking a break, especially as he also plans to travel to South Africa and visit the set of the live-action One Piece series. It seems his original trip was ruined due to COVID and he is finally using the chance.
One Piece is about to hit another renaissance with a new game on the horizon, the latest film RED and a live-action adaptation. The manga about to enter its final stages is also something that’s hard to believe considering how long it’s been going. It also turns out that Oda hasn’t had a break like this since the initial time skip, which was all the way back in 2010. So, it’s a well-deserved rest as we still have a few more chapters before then, as Wano’s curtains come to a close.
It feels like forever since the live-action adaptation of One Piece was first announced. To be fair, it was back in 2017 and after a long wait, alongside a pandemic, the production finally started when we entered 2022. While it seems we’re still some time away from actual footage from the show, Geeked Week gave us a first look at the One Piece set, as well as some additional castings. So, let’s take a closer look at what was revealed during the brief but great showcase of what showrunners Steve Maeda and MattOwens are working on.
Miss Love Duck
The showcase started off with a look at some amazing detailed concept art. It included our first official look at Alvida’s iconic ship, the Love Duck. We sadly don’t get a good look at its captain, but Ilia Isorelýs Paulino is confirmed to play the ruthless leader of the Alvida Pirates. We don’t know exactly where they are going, but we theorized that they may be taking a cue from the anime, which kicked off Monkey D. Luffy’s (Iñaki Godoy) adventure on the ship, where his fateful meeting with Koby (Morgan Davies) puts them both on separate adventures towards the Grand Line. The little tease of how they brought the boat to life is also a great showcase of the details such as even its munition having her heart on it.
Going Merry
The Going Merry is the Straw Hats’ iconic ship that they sail into the Grand Line. It’s no wonder they would showcase the ship that would pull through every possible danger thrown at it; including Luffy. The ship is taking quite a different approach in its design, as the goat head is way more defined and stepped in more realism. While it’s hard to not think of the iconic simple design from the manga, it’s great to see Merry actually being merry, as what we thought from leaked set photos was her screaming but is actually just her smiling.
If you look closely, you can actually see our first tease of Luffy’s live-action design with the open red shirt. What stands out is that from the angle the character is drawn, it seems he is wearing jeans rather than his usual shorts, but it may just be something used in earlier designs. It should also be noted that the iconic Straw Hat symbol got a makeover that still feels true to that of the original from the manga, just less rounded. The real-life boat showcased seemingly wasn’t quite finished, as the eyes aren’t colored in.
Baratie
Now, here’s the juicy part of the showcase, we get a good look at how they are adapting Chef Zeff’s iconic ship. Not only did they reveal that Craig Fairbrass is playing the owner and mentor of Sanji (Taz Skylar) but also showcased how they recreated the entire restaurant. The concept art showcases a few of the details such as the mouth no longer being a detachable boat but rather a unique bar area. It’s interesting that the concept art seemingly highlights a night shot, which could be a tease for when some of the Baratie Arc takes place.
There’s one big difference that does stand out. The Baratie is no longer a restaurant that’s just stranded in the middle of the sea. While it is still a restaurant boat, you can clearly see that it connects to various docks that lead into the restaurant with concept art even teasing other environments around it. So, it may be part of an island or simply have a unique docking location that adds some new platforms for the eventual fight with Don Krieg, who has yet to be cast. The details in the interior hopefully also mean we’ll see the restaurant get wrecked throughout their battle.
Arlong’s Map Room
While not being showcased, there was a highlight by Matt Owens that they have been working on Arlong’s map room for weeks. Many manga fans will instantly make the connection with what emotional importance that room holds to Emily Rudd‘s Nami and while it’s a shame we didn’t even get a tease of what it looks like. Still, the matter of the fact is that it getting highlighted showcases just how much this team truly loves Eiichiro Oda‘s manga. So, maybe a future tease is on the horizon that offers a better look at the sets and villages we have yet to see.
Windmill Village and Red Force
While talking about the Baratie, there was an interesting group of set videos being shown that seemingly have no direct correlation to the iconic boat restaurant. well, the windmills seemingly hint at this being Luffy’s hometown. It is where he meets Shanks (Peter Gadiot) and sets sail to become King of the Pirates. We even get a good look at Partys Bar, which is where we have the iconic bar sequence between Shanks and a mountain bandit. It’s also where we’re introduced to Makino, whose child over the many years of One Piece has led to quite a few fan theories.
Yet, if you look at the right corner of the first image, there’s one more detail that could be easily overlooked. That is the Red Force’s iconic dragon-inspired figurehead. It belongs to Shanks, and a set photo we saw some time ago confirms they have a life-sized boat docked on the set. It’s crazy to see this shot and realize that ship is really there just towering over the village. There’s also one shot with a red ship that could be connected to the Red Force during the showcase. It’ll be interesting to see just how much they use it in the upcoming series.
Mysterious Boat
Before I get on to the cast additions, I want to point out one additional ship that they for some reason give some attention to. While it’s nothing that one would connect, at first sight, it may actually be connected to the Baratie storyline. Given the shape and housing in the back, it does seem like this could be Johnny and Yosaku’s ship that the crew use to get to Arlong Park.
It’s unclear if that is indeed their ship, as the design could also be hinting at something belonging to Buggy’s crew, whose ship has been noticeably absent during the promotion. It’s the little house it is parked at that adds a few questions, but it’s fun to speculate. We don’t know what elements may get adapted going into the live-action adaptation, especially with fewer episodes than the anime to work with. So, it’s going to be interesting to see if this ship is simply a set design.
New Casting Announcements
While not directly part of the showcase, we got quite a few casting additions. We have Usopp’s technical love interest with Celeste Loots‘ Kaya. Her infamous butler Klahadore is also officially announced with Alexander Maniatis in the role. Their addition confirms that we will visit Syrup village and follow that arc in some format as well. As Baratie was highlighted quite a bit, we have Craig Fairbrass as Chef Zeff, who also is no stranger to working with Taz Skylar. Nami’s sister Nojiko has been found, as she will be played by Chioma Umeala. Last, but not least, we also have the chin himself, Captain Morgan played by Langley Kirkwood, who’s the father of Helmeppo (Aidan Scott). The only main characters still missing so far would be the King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger, Smoker, Jacko, and Don Krieg. Of course, there are also some smaller roles that haven’t been officially announced yet, as they may slowly announce them building up to the series’ release.
