UPDATE: ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Tessa Thompson Talks Valkyrie’s Comic Powers

UPDATE: It turns out that the powers Tessa Thompson was describing in her interview with W Magazine weren’t for the Thor: Love and Thunder version of her character, but rather the comics. In an Instagram story, she offers some insight into what she was discussing in the interview and simply shares her excitement of the character’s comic abilities and backstory.

In talking about Valkyrie to W Mag, I was talking generally about powers that are canon and that I loved in reading the comics and not Thor: Love and Thunder. I shan’t be a home for spoilers.

There are quite a few exciting projects heading our way in 2022. Of course, all eyes are on May’s release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as it’ll continue what was set up in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Yet, Thor: Love and Thunder have been slowly teasing the new designs of Taika Waititi‘s next MCU entry which promise an even crazier fourth entry in the franchise. It’ll also see the return of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie who’ll have a major role in the story. In a new interview with WMagazine, she reveals that her character might have a new and very powerful ability in the film:

She has weird skills, to be honest. She can sense when someone is close to death, and she takes them into Valhalla, which is essentially the afterlife. She can revive people. But when she revives people, sometimes she ends up in their body. It’s a weird thing. It can be quite erotic. And then she has superhuman strength and is essentially God.

    Tessa Thompson

That’s a curious ability that hasn’t truly been hinted at in Thor: Ragnarok. It’s an ability that fits what the Valkyries do in Norse mythology, but this ability might also be our first hint that they are staying true to Jane Foster’s transformation into the Mighty Thor. In the comics, she is fighting cancer before she gains the abilities.

So, Valkyrie might be the one to figure out her real identity – if it’s a secret, to begin with – and connect the dots. Her being able to revive someone does make you wonder if someone might end up dying in the film only for her to bring them back. It opens some interesting questions about the upcoming fourth entry of the Thor franchise.

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ First Full Look at Tessa Thompson’s New Valkyrie Suit

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ First Full Look at Tessa Thompson’s New Valkyrie Suit

We finally entered 2022 and that means we have many new projects heading our way from Marvel Studios. While all eyes are on May’s release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we also have Thor: Love and Thunder following shortly after. The first fourth entry in an MCU franchise will continue where Thor’s story left off in Avengers: Endgame, while also furthering New Asgards’ residency on Earth. Tessa Thompson‘s Valkyrie has become their new leader and will get an outfit to highlight her position.

We got a glimpse at it when a merchandise poster found its way online, but it seems that some photos have found their way online of Thompson showing off the new suit in all its glory. It includes many elements fans are familiar with from Thor’s costumes while including the white elements from her previous outfit. It’s certainly a suit worthy of a new generation of Asgardian royalty.

It’s quite the upgrade from the previous film and it’ll be exciting to see where her character is heading once she makes her return as the new ruler of New Asgard. We might also see more of her in future entries of the MCU. So, this may simply act as her prelude to the new era of post-Endgame heroism.

  • First ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Merch Offers First Look at Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor

First ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Merch Offers First Look at Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor

Here’s a curious surprise, as it seems that the first piece of merchandise for Thor: Love and Thunder have found its way into stores early. It’s similar to how we learned about the Guardians of the Multiverse in What If…?. This time around, we got what looks like a poster for the upcoming Thor sequel which includes our first look at a new suit design for the God of Thunder and, most notably, our first look at Natalie Portman‘s Mighty Thor costume. @GodEmperorBoss was the lucky one to find the first look:

    https://twitter.com/GodEmperorBoss/status/1469673883418521601?t=FmIKfXLTP2tuMs2l2Wp8pg&s=09

It’s unclear if this is simply a poster meant for merchandise purposes, as it would seem odd that the first poster for the film that isn’t going to release until July 8th is already available in stores. Plus, it does seem like a lot of it is based on the artwork. Still, Portman‘s Mighty Thor looks great and a lot of it seems strongly inspired by her comic run combined with Thor’s earlier costumes.

We also get a brand new design for the actual God of Thor, who’s wearing a nice combination of gold and blue armor. Korg is also given the spotlight with a new look and Valkyrie can be seen in the back riding a Pegasus wearing a similar armor design that thor normally uses. So, she’ll also get a new look that is fitting for the ruler of New Asgard. It’s exciting and crazy to think we see more of Love and Thunder than Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is set to release in May.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Michael Giacchino Working on ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Next

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Michael Giacchino Working on ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Next

Michael Giacchino has built up quite a reputation within the industry as the go-to composer for superhero projects. He’s just recently finished up his work with Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Batman. It’s his third Spider-Man entry of the MCU after working on Coco, Jurassic World, Star Trek Beyond, Doctor Strange, and so many more. He’s come a long way since he put his name on the map with the Lost series. It looks like he’s already eyed his next project, as he’s confirmed he’ll tackle Thor: Love and Thunder next on Twitter.

Taika Waititi is continuing his work he started with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, where Thor was cast out by his own sister and meets up with an old ally. The upcoming sequel will build where his story arc ended up in Avengers: Endgame, as he sets out alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy to find his place in the world. It’s surprising that Giacchino is taking over the composer role this time around, as Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo fame worked on the last entries’ soundtrack. He added a unique audio layer to what you’d expect from a Norse god. So, we’ll see if he builds upon what came before, or Waititi decided to give each entry a new visual style to make it stand out. My personal hope would be to fully commit to the Norse themes and make Love and Thunder stand out from the rest.

  • Chris Hemsworth Expresses Diminishing Interest in Continuing as Thor

Chris Hemsworth Expresses Diminishing Interest in Continuing as Thor

As much as we love the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is always going to be a point where the actors aren’t interested in playing these characters actively anymore. Robert Downey Jr. exited the franchise with Avengers: Endgame when he gave Iron Man his last big stand in the franchise. Some actors that have been with the franchise since its early days still remain, such as Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Yet, it seems that his interest might be reaching a boiling point as revealed in an interview with The Today Show.

I’ve done six or seven Thors, so maybe. As long as they’ll have me, I’ll turn up, but I feel like that enthusiasm [for me] might be waning.”

    Chris Hemsworth

It’s understandable that he’ll reach a limit at some point, as he’s already appeared in quite a few films, as he points out. Of cousre, we don’t know what the plans are for the actor after Thor: Love and Thunder releases next year. His character might have a final hurrah before Natalie Portman‘s Jane Foster carries on the mantle. Of course, a personal preference would be to end his run inspired by the actual Norse mythology and inspired by the Fear Itself storyline. Here’s hoping we find out once the film releases and gives us a closer look into the future of his character.

  • New Toy Leak Indicates Sleepwalker and D’Spayre Among the ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Wave Figures

New Toy Leak Indicates Sleepwalker and D’Spayre Among the ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Wave Figures

Very few people cover the future Marvel Legends wave on the level of YouTuber Rektangular. His channel is full of leaks and updates of any kind, which makes it worth a follow if you’re a collector. In his most recent update, Rektangular spilled the beans on what to expect from Hasbro’s Marvel Legends collection for 2022.

Obviously, the further out the waves, the less info that’s available, but Rektangular seemed very certain about what to expect from the first two waves set to launch in 2022. The best part is that both will feature figures from upcoming MCU films.

The first wave of Legends is currently scheduled for a January release and will feature characters from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The wave will feature a mix of seven MCU and comic book characters who are currently only known by the following code names:

    • Runes
    • Bleeker
    • Bleeper
    • Stripes
    • Master
    • Sleep
    • Dreamy

According to Rektangular, two of those figures will be comic book sculpts of Sleepwalker and D’Spayre. A digital rendering of D’Spayre, who is a demon and one of the Fear Lords that feed upon the souls of humans for power, leaked some time ago. However, this is the first mention (to my knowledge) of Sleepwalker joining the wave. A relatively obscure character, he has a bit of a cult following and has taken on the Fear Lords, specifically Nightmare, in the comics. Of course, these characters being in the wave is in no way an indication that they will appear in the film.

It’s likely that Sleepwalker and D’Spayre are “Sleepy” and “Dreamy” while the other characters are from the film. Given what we know, it’s possible that Wanda is “Runes”, Strange is Bleeker (a reference to the NYC Sanctum’s location), America Chavez is “Stripes” and Wong is “Master.” That just leaves “Bleeper”, who could be Rintrah. Keep in mind this is the first wave and won’t be spoilery, so Rintrah seems safer than say members of the rumored Illuminati.

April will reportedly see the release of a 7-figure wave featuring characters from Thor: Love and Thunder that we recently covered here. According to Rektangular, the rest of the year will see 6 additional waves released:

    • April: Vintage wave
    • May: X-Men wave
    • June: Classic wave
    • September: Avengers wave
    • September: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever wave
    • October: Avenger wave

It’s likely that characters from Marvel Studios’ streaming series She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel will be sprinkled into some of the waves listed above. It’s also possible that additional waves could be planned. Check out Rektangular’s report below and give him a follow if you’re into such things.

  • RUMOR: Leaked Marvel Legends’ Code Names Tease ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Additions

RUMOR: Leaked Marvel Legends’ Code Names Tease ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Additions

Throughout the pandemic, it seemed like the only real update we have for upcoming Marvel Studios projects was through merchandise. Even now, as film shave finally returned to theaters, sometimes leaks from toy companies offer some insight into the upcoming project, or at the very least a sign we can expect teases for upcoming projects. Twitter user @preterniadotcom shared a list that may potentially hint at the first wave of Marvel Legends figurines for Thor: Love and Thunder.

Some of these could be quite easy to connect. Necro might be in reference to the Necrosword, so that’ll likely be Gorr the God Butcher. Korg is a good candidate for Cracked, while Pew Pew could be in reference to Star-Lord. Biceps is likely Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor, which could be as a reference to the image teased of him on set included in the tweet. The rest get a bit more difficult but Sabaton, a Swedish heavy metal band could be in reference to Valkyrie while Helm is Jane, due to her character famously wearing a helmet in the comics.

Still, we have to keep in mind that not every single figurine in this line-up will be from the film. Even the What If…? series included at least one character from the comics. Perhaps we’ll get a Loki figurine in addition that isn’t directly connected to the film. IF code names are available and they are eyeing an April release, there’s a chance we might get a good look at them around February or March. Spider-Man: No Way Home’s toy tie-ins were released ahead of the trailer as well that offered some teases of the film.

  • New ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Set Photos Tease Thor and Jane on a Date

New ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Set Photos Tease Thor and Jane on a Date

We’ve recently gotten some set video from Thor: Love and Thunder that confirmed the production has entered reshoots. It’s quite the common practice for Marvel Studios at this point and it seems that they might be using this chance to add some flashbacks into the production. New photos have surfaced featuring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman with their look from Thor: The Dark World. Not just that, they also seem to be out on a date of some kind with hot dogs. So, we might finally find out why they went their separate ways at some point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The images are provided by Twitter user @lovethundernews.

Love and Thunder has a very telling name. It’ll be interesting to see how they integrate these flashbacks especially with Jane Foster’s new role in this story. Portman‘s return came with the confirmation she’ll wield Mjolnir at some point in the story. It’s unclear what that entails especially as his hammer was destroyed back in Thor: Ragnarok. Plus, we never found out why they went their separate ways in the franchise. The film will be our first look into it which might also be one of the core emotional anchor for Thor in this new storyline.

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

    ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

    Premiere: July 8, 2022

Taika Waititi returns to the Thor franchise promising to double up on the craziness that made Thor: Ragnarok so rewatchable and to make something even MORE “bombastic” than its predecessor. While the film is certain to pick up where Avengers: Endgame left off, it’s also going to take direction from Jason Aaron’s long-lasting and acclaimed run on the comic and see Jane Foster pick up Mjolnir and take up the mantle of Thor!

In January of 2020, it was revealed that Christian Bale had entered into negotiations to play a key role in the film. Filming for Thor: Love and Thunder was set to take place in Australia beginning in August of 2020. but with Shang-Chi delayed due to COVID-19, the start date has been pushed back. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson was brought in to work on the script which Waititi described as a rom-com.

Considering the last time the God of Thunder was seen on-screen, aboard the Guardians of the Galaxy’s Benatar, it came as no surprise that Star-Lord himself, Chris Pratt, is set to make an appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder. His amount of screen time and importance to the storyline is currently unknown, being likely that it may mirror Doctor Strange’s cameo in Thor: Ragnarok.

Christian Bale‘s character was finally disclosed at the Disney Investor Day presentation on December 10, 2020. He is now set to be portraying Gorr, the God Butcher.

A number of cameos were confirmed as some set photos surfaced in early March 2021. Matt DamonLuke Hemsworth, and Sam Neil will be reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok, with Melissa McCarthy making her MCU debut as an Asgardian actress playing Hela. A cameo few saw coming was Russell Crowe‘s, in an initially unknown role which was later confirmed to be the first MCU appearance of Zeus. The Kiwi was confirmed to be appearing in the feature in late March 2021 after being spotted spending time with the cast in the weeks prior.

Following what is expected to be the final post-pandemic reschedule of the Marvel Studios slate, Thor: Love and Thunder has seen its premiere shifted to July 8, 2022.

The first official teaser trailer came out on April 18, 2022, giving audiences the first taste of what the fourth Thor installment could bring to the big screen. It was soon followed by the first official trailer that gave fans the first proper look at Christian Bale‘s Gorr, the God Butcher, as well as a few other cosmic entities.

    Cast

    • Chris Hemsworth as Thor Odinson
    • Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher

    • Taika Waititi as Korg
