  • ‘Moon Knight’ From Page to Screen: Episode 3

‘Moon Knight’ From Page to Screen: Episode 3

Moon Knight continues to be a fresh combination of the character’s comic book history with a dash of original interpretation. Last week, we compared the live-action series version of Mr. Knight with the comics’. But for Episode 1, we took advantage of the lack of direct adaptation to explore the history of Marc Spector’s dissociative identity disorder in the comics. Like with that first episode, Episode 3 opens the door to dig deeper into what is only hinted at in Moon Knight.

At the beginning of the episode, as Layla was getting her fake passport, we learn that her father was an archaeologist who was killed during an excavation in the desert. As Moon Knight clearly spends most of its time focused on Steven Grant and Marc Spector, it’s unclear how far back into Layla’s history the series will go. But the little we got is incredibly similar to the comics, and it also connects to Moon Knight’s origin. So, looking into what Episode 3 is referencing might give us a deeper understanding of Layla, Marc Spector, and Moon Knight.

Back in the day, when Marc Spector was still a mercenary, he worked for a man named Raoul Bushman, or the Bushman. He would become Moon Knight’s clear archenemy, but that is for another time. Bushman and Marc’s unit went on a raid of a newly discovered tomb in Sudan. Archaeologist Dr. Peter Alraune and his team—including his daughter Marlene—were the ones who discovered the tomb and were working at the site at the time of the raid.

While slightly varying versions of the events that took place to appear over the more than 40 years of Moon Knight comics, the traditional story finds Bushman murdering Dr. Alraune, and others, in front of Marlene. At this moment, Marc seems to have a moral crisis and is strongly opposed to Bushman’s murderous ways. Marc saves Marlene, who hates Marc at first, but is mortally wounded.

    Moon Knight #1 (1980)
    Moon Knight #14 (2017)
    Moon Knight #14 (2017)

The next bit is, of course, at the core of all Moon Knight stories. In Moon Knight #1 (1980), Marlene brings Marc inside the tomb where he dies underneath a statute of Khonshu only to come back to life claiming to be the Fist of that same god. In Moon Knight (2016), Marc crawls into the tomb on his own without Marlene. After this, Marlene for some reason falls for Marc (and Steven, Jake, and Moon Knight) and they move in together in a Long Island mansion. Marlene supports Moon Knight’s vigilantism and they more or less (less) live happily ever after. In any event, the murder of Marlene’s father was always the connection between her and Marc.

Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight Episode 3

In Moon Knight, Layla is essentially a much-improved Marlene. So, the brief mention of Layla’s archaeologist father in Episode 3 is interesting for a few reasons. First, it could imply that Layla has a virtually identical backstory to Marlene’s in terms of the death of her father and connection to Marc Spector. However, Layla says that her father’s death was “lost to the sands”, implying that she does not know what happened. If that is the case, it begs the question of how she met Marc and whether she knows about his involvement with Bushman and the raid.

    Moon Knight #4 (2016)

Whatever the case ends up being, it is fun to speculate elements of Moon Knight when the series makes clear references to the character’s or supporting characters’ comic book history. Layla’s father and his death may very likely play a significant role either in her relationship with Marc or in exploring the origin of Moon Knight in the series.

The first three episodes of Moon Knight are now streaming on Disney+.

  • Netflix Teases a Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Update in June

Netflix Teases a Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Update in June

Well, it looks like those that are actively following the development of Netflix’s live-action One Piece series have something to be excited about. Netflix Geeked has just announced that from June 6th until the 10th they will be holding Geeked Week for 2022 with lots of announcements, sneak peeks, and trailers for their upcoming projects. Now, eagle-eyed fans might swiftly notice one rather big detail added into the fray.

The visual shared by Netflix Geeked has one creative detail right next to the date and that is pretty clearly the manga design of the Going Merry. So, it’s safe to assume that we might get something out of the event teasing the live-action adaptation and we may get some kind of preview from behind the scenes. It seems unlikely we’ll get a full trailer of some kind, but they could add a teaser or first look at the cast.

There’s been a lot of excitement about whatever direction the series is going to take, especially as we’re seeing quite a few set photos teasing the massive sets that they are working on. Just yesterday, we got a good look at Shank’s ship, the Red Force, as it is parked in Windmill Village. We even got a glimpse of them filming something on top of the Merry, which got quite the updated design. Its inclusion is definitely on purpose, as there are also teases for Umbrella Academy, the new Resident Evil series, and more. Still, here’s we also get some teases as we near Geeked Week.

  • New Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Set Photos Offer Best Look Yet at Going Merry and Shank’s Ship

New Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Set Photos Offer Best Look Yet at Going Merry and Shank’s Ship

One Piece is the series that keeps on giving. More set photos have found their way online of Netflix’s live-action adaptation, but going by the massive size of the ships involved it would be hard-pressed they could somehow find a way to hide them. Another batch of One Piece set photos offers an even better look at not only the Going Merry but also the fully-formed Red Force. Just recently, we got a shot from behind that offered a look at the ship and Windmill Village. Well, if you’ve wondered just how massive these ships are, the latest batch photos might offer a clearer picture.

Once again, @OP_Netflix_News has shared the latest set of photos, and it’s quite impressive to see just how detailed they went with their designs. Red Force, Shank’s iconic ship from Luffy’s childhood, is truly massive, and you can see a lot of detail put into the Viking-inspired design. Have to say, the Red Force’s figurehead is a massive improvement from the original storyline. The fact they built the ship does also highlight we’ll get a few scenes on board, such as the famous moment when Luffy stabbed into his eye to show how ready he is to venture out into the seas.

We also get a new look at Going Merry. While there is an ongoing joke that the ship is constantly screaming. Well, it turns out the Going Merry is actually merry, as this new set photo reveals that the new detailed figurehead is actually trying to make her smile. So, we already see some nice touches by the One Piece team trying to add a special touch to their designs while also staying faithful to the original manga.

  • First Story Details for HBO Max’s ‘Constantine’ Reboot

First Story Details for HBO Max’s ‘Constantine’ Reboot

J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot made quite the deal with HBO as the production company was able to make an exclusive deal for three projects, which includes a Stephen King-inspired story called Overlook and Duster. Yet, the biggest surprise was that they are also adopting an iconic Justice League Dark member. It wasn’t until February of this year that we uncovered it was going to be about Constantine with UK writer Guy Bolton attached to write the series. Now, the first details have found their way online.

The 8-episode series is set to combine elements of body horror, supernatural and urban action in the streets of London. They are currently casting a character by the name of “Akara” who is a young 10-year-old Cambodian and will be the heart of the story. She’ll be cast alongside her grandfather “Pich.” A sudden encounter with the girl will throw the life of John Constantine upside down, as he falls down a rabbit hole of dangerous encounters and the occult. As these characters are cast under fake names, Akara could end up being Astra Logue from the Hellblazer comics.

The project is currently being cast under the working title “Blood Work” and, as mentioned by Illuminerdi, will start production later this year in the Fall. They shared that the production would work under the title “Chimney” as a cute callback to the character’s smoking habits. It’ll run until February of 2023, as it aims to shoot in London and Morocco. There’s still no word yet on who will take on the role of John Constantine, as Bad Robot has been actively looking to fill the role and is open to diverse casting.

It isn’t the first adaptation of the popular Hellblazer comics, as 2014 saw a one-season adaptation by NBC with Matt Ryan in the titular role. The series was simply titled Constantine but didn’t manage to land a second season renewal. Yet, Ryan’s portrayal was met with a lot of fanfare, which led to him joining CW’s Arrowverse, where he became a member of the Legends of Tomorrow series. It’s unclear if this new adaptation for HBO Max will become part of the bigger DC Extended Universe, or remain a self-contained story.

  • Karen Gillan Would Love to Explore Nebula’s Backstory in a Disney+ Series

Karen Gillan Would Love to Explore Nebula’s Backstory in a Disney+ Series

Disney+ has become the place for Marvel Studios to try out new concepts and ideas, as they have given us some unique stories with each new entry. Smaller characters that normally wouldn’t get any attention even got to make their live-action debut, such as Moon Knight and soon Ms. Marvel. Yet, it also will offer the opportunity to explore the backstories of characters that mostly were relegated to the supporting role, such as in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It looks like Karen Gillan would love to use that opportunity to further explore Nebula’s history through a Disney+ series.

In an interview with ScreenRant, she discussed the opportunity that it would offer, and believes that it would “be really cool to learn more about” Nebula’s time before she joined the Guardians and made amends with Gamora.

I don’t know, I guess Marvel will have to say yes. So, if you want to get them to do that? That would be great. But I think I think Nebula has a really interesting backstory, so that would be really cool to learn more about.

    Karen Gillan

The big thing that would also offer is that it opens the possibility of spending more time with Thanos, though a fully CG character could become quite expensive for the series to include. They could also start adapting their episode count to have a shorter season that includes the same type of budget, but it definitely has a lot of potentials. Of course, we don’t know what the future has in store for the Guardian of the Galaxy after the third entry. she would be a great addition to a new Ravager-focused series that could also further explore her backstory while continuing her story by following her own path. There’s a lot of potentials and we’ll see if Disney and Marvel Studios see it as well.

  • First Look at ‘Moon Knight’s Layla and Khonshu Funko Pops

First Look at ‘Moon Knight’s Layla and Khonshu Funko Pops

After another episode of Moon Knight has arrived and that also means we once again get a brand new set of Funko Pops. This time around, we got our first look at not only Layla but also Khonshu. The Egyptian deity looks extremely detailed though we can’t see if his head is directly connected to the body, or they went with a similar design to what we see in the show. He also comes with a new glow-up version that is now available to pre-order.

The Funko Pops have been great additions for collectors, especially as we get new ones with each episode. Considering we’ve seen Layla and Khonshu in the previous episode, it looks like we’ll never know when something might find its way online and what the upcoming episodes might have in store for us. As their adventure in Egypt continues, who knows who else we might meet along the way besides the various Avatars we met in the previous episode.

We still have three more episodes to go. So, there are a lot of opportunities to explore what the future has in store not only for Moon Knight but also for the MCU. The recent Emmy submissions continued to push the fact that this series is more of a limited series rather than one to feature multiple seasons, but Loki is the only one with multiple seasons so far. So, we’ll see what the future has in store.

  • Layla is ‘Moon Knight’s’ Best Upgrade From the Comics

Layla is ‘Moon Knight’s’ Best Upgrade From the Comics

In Moon Knight, so far, much of Moon Knight’s classic ensemble has been reduced to teases or cameos at best. Jean-Paul “Frenchie” Duchamp was a name in Marc Spector’s phone in Episode 1, and Bertrand Crawley has been making silent appearances as a human statue. Marc’s third identity from the comics, Jake Lockley, has not made an appearance or been referenced. A lot of classic elements from the Moon Knight comics are missing from Moon Knight.

One of the most significant characters in Moon Knight comics, other than Marc Spector and his alters, is Marlene Alarune. Marlene is Marc’s (and Steven’s) (and Jake’s) constant on-again-off-again romantic interest. She has been consistently present since Moon Knight #1 in 1980. While over 40 years of history saw plenty of changes to the character, overall, Marlene is not a great character. Moon Knight, though, apparently recognized the significance of her character and the ability for a love interest of Moon Knight to highlight Marc Spector’s dissociative identity disorder—we now have May Calamawy’s Layla El-Faouly. And Layla is great.

Marlene and Layla have different names, but their roles and pasts suggest that Layla is more or less a majorly upgraded Marlene. Obviously, both are love interests to Marc Spector. In the comics, Marlene was aware of Marc’s three identities and Moon Knight from the beginning. She generally dealt with it well, but at other times throughout her comics history, Marc’s DID was, reasonably, a source of frustration to say the least. Still, she has had relationships specifically with Marc, Steven, and Jake over time. More recently, she and Marc share a daughter named Diatrice, who was fathered by Jake, and Marc never knew for years. In Moon Knight, Layla is introduced as Marc’s soon-to-be ex-wife who was not aware of any identity other than Marc and Moon Knight. Marlene and Marc never married in the comics, but they often also had a rocky relationship.

Marlene met Marc almost at the same time that Marc became Moon Knight. Marlene is the daughter of an archaeologist who was killed by Bushman when the villain and his crew (including mercenary Marc Spector) raided the tomb Marlene’s father had discovered. After Bushman killed the archaeologist, Marc apparently had a moment of moral reckoning and turned against Bushman, saving Marlene and getting himself killed then revived by Khonshu in the process. We do not know much about Layla’s past in Moon Knight, but we learned in Episode 3 that her father was an archaeologist and was killed at some point. That is incredibly unlikely to be a coincidence, but whether Layla otherwise has the same general backstory as Marlene is yet to be seen.

Marlene, it feels like, is a constant damsel in distress in the comics. She generally feels extremely superficial and it is just a given that Marc cares about her. There are times when she is non-stop jealous or angry for every action Marc takes, there are times she is at home waiting for Moon Knight when he gets back, there are times when they have broken up and he longs for her, and there are (again) many times where her being in trouble is half the plot or motivation of an issue. She has her moments, but Marlene just feels like an outdated trope that never quite evolved.

Layla, on the other hand, is certainly not a damsel in distress. She seems to know how to handle herself in a violent situation, sure. But she also arguably is the person leading the current plot in Moon Knight—without her knowledge and help, it is not clear how great at tracking down Ammut’s tomb Marc and Steven would be. Her knowledge of Ancient Egyptian artifacts and mythology is rivaled only by Steven, and she has connections in Egypt that seems to be able to get them anywhere. Layla seems weirdly OK with the DID thing Marc never told her about after getting to know Steven a little bit, but also is reasonably angry at Marc for several things. Of course, she mentioned early on that Marc and her fought side by side for the Scarab, only reaffirming that she can, at the very least, hold her own next to an ex-mercenary, Egyptian god avatar.

The only thing “damsel in distress” about Layla is perhaps the fact that Marc is trying to protect her from Khonshu. It does not seem like Layla even knows that Khonshu is interested in her as his next avatar. And to be fair, if Khonshu is interested in her as is next fist of vengeance, that says a lot about what she is capable of. There is also something to be said for the fact that Calamawy and Layla are Egyptian. While the role was not necessarily written for an Egyptian actress, the fact that the character can connect to that aspect of Moon Knight is valuable considering there are no other major Egyptian presences in front of the camera.

The first three episodes of Moon Knight are now streaming on Disney+.

  • ‘Dead Boy Detectives’ Series Moving Forward at HBO Max

‘Dead Boy Detectives’ Series Moving Forward at HBO Max

DC comics continue to find a home with HBO Max. The major streaming service has decided to move forward with a new series based on Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner’s Dead Boy Detectives. Set to be adapted by The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey, the show is described as “a fresh take on a ghost story that explores loss, grief, and death through the lens of [the undead] Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland… and their very alive friend, Crystal Palace. It’s a lot like a vintage detective series — only darker and on acid.” The title characters will be portrayed by George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri, with Kassius Nelson playing Crystal. Yuyu KitamuraJenn Lyon, and Briana Cuoco are also part of the cast, with Ruth Connell reprising her role as Night Nurse from Doom Patrol.

Dead Boy Detectives will be produced by Berlanti Productions, their second collaboration with Yockey. The showrunner had the following to say in regards to the series getting the go-ahead:

I’ve been obsessed with this comic for a long time, so it’s a true passion project. And Jeremy, Berlanti Productions, DC, WBTV, HBO Max — they’re all encouraging me to run with every wild, bizarre, and unsettling choice. The result is going to be really dark fun.

    Steve Yockey

HBO Max’s head of original content, Sarah Aubrey, added:

We are excited to be expanding further into the DC Universe with Steve, Jeremy [Carver] and the Berlanti team with this thrilling new spin on a detective series. We were fascinated by the world of the Dead Boy Detectives that Steve and Jeremy first introduced in Doom Patrol and cannot wait to follow the supernatural sleuths in the lurid mysteries to come.

    Sarah Aubrey

As stated in the quotes, the Dead Boy Detectives characters previously made their live-action debuts in HBO’s fan favorite series Doom Patrol. Here’s hoping the new show finds just as much success as it’s predecessor.

  • DC’s ‘Titans’ Leaked Set Photos Offer First Look at Jinx

DC’s ‘Titans’ Leaked Set Photos Offer First Look at Jinx

We just ran the first real set photo we got from the cast of DC’s Titans, which revealed that the upcoming season is very likely adapting the iconic White Raven storyline from the animated Teen Titans series and comic books with a twist. It looks like that isn’t the only element they are carrying over from the animated adaptation, as a new set photo offers our first look at the HBO Max show’s version of Jinx.

In one of the set photos, we can see actress Lisa Ambalavanar with a familiar hairstyle for those that followed the Cartoon Network animated series. With purple hair and some black stripes, they clearly took inspiration from the Teen Titans when bringing the character to life in the HBO Max series if the set photo provided by @seansmovies (as shared by @DCTBMidias) is anything to go by.

It certainly looks like they took inspiration from the animated design, but similar to what they did with Raven, they didn’t change her skin tone. We don’t know yet how they might adapt her abilities, as the animated show gave it a special purple spark to let people know she’s used the ability. So, here’s hoping the first trailer gives us a first look.

  • Leaked ‘Titans’ Set Photo Features White-Haired Raven

Leaked ‘Titans’ Set Photo Features White-Haired Raven

It looks like the upcoming fourth season of DC’s Titans will feature an iconic transformation for Teagan Croft‘s Raven. Fans of the original animated Teen Titans series might remember that when Raven confronted her father Trigon, she would embrace her purest energy to take on the representation of evil. This transformation led to the costume turning white. Well, it seems that the upcoming season of the HBO Max series will do something similar but this time around her hair will change.

It’s certainly a surprising reveal, but a new set photo from @seansmovies (as shared by @DCTBMidias) offers a look at a few of the actors of Titans. In it, we can clearly see Croft with a very different hairstyle. It’s gone completely white which would hint at her potentially going through a similar storyline in the upcoming season.

It’s a curious direction to take, especially as we already had a Trigon-focused storyline in the first season. Either they might build upon it, or her abilities are pushed to their limits in a new way. Brother Blood has been cast for the upcoming season and is likely its main villain. So, perhaps he is someone who worships Trigon and is trying to find a way to unleash him on the world. We’ll see if the trailer gives us our first look on what may end up being the cause for her transformation.
