‘Hawkeye’ From Page to Screen: Episode 3.1

The live-action Hawkeye series has openly taken bits and pieces of Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye comic run. We looked at how Episode 1 incorporated the introduction of Lucky the Pizza Dog, and Episode 2 featured Clint’s capture by the Tracksuit Mafia that had some clear ties to the comic. This week, Hawkeye Episode 3, “Echoes, adapted one of the comic’s most iconic sequences: the trick arrow car chase. Unlike previous episodes, the car chase sequence is based heavily on Fraction and Aja’s work, and is as close to being “directly from the comic” as the series is likely to get. You might be surprised to see what the episode borrowed straight from the comic and what they changed.

    ‘Hawkeye’ #3 (2012)

    What They Borrowed

    The Chase

Of course, the car chase sequence happens both in Hawkeye Episode 3 and Hawkeye #3. In both stories, Clint and Kate are being chased by hoards of the Tracksuit Mafia with one Hawkeye hanging out of the window to shoot arrows at their assailants, causing mayhem throughout the streets of New York. A major difference, though, is that in the comic the two archers are also the original chasers. But more on that below.

    The Arrows

The car chase wouldn’t be the car chase without the endless barrage of random trick arrows that Clint has on hand. We could write an entire article on the arrows in this episode alone…so we did. Check out the next “From Page to Screen” for that.

    The Banter

As is their thing, Clint and Kate have a lot of back-and-forth throughout the chase in both the series and comic. It’s a bit different in the live-action version, however, because Clint mostly can’t hear Kate. For example, a running joke in Hawkeye is that Clint set out to label his trick arrows on that day, which led him down a series of poor choices, including the car chase sequence itself. In the episode, Kate complains that Clint should label his arrows. Another running joke is Clint’s concern for the red 1970’s Dodge Challenger, and both versions end up wrecked.

    The Bridge

In both, the chase ends on a bridge and in a stand-off between archers and the Tracksuit Mafia. In the comic, Kate saves Clint, who’s held at gun point. A classic visual is Kate pointing an arrow at the sky, which is replicated in Hawkeye—the major difference being that the live-action scenario involved both Hawkeyes and a Pym arrow.

    What They Changed

    The Car

Hawkeye prominently featured a red 1970 Dodge Challenger. That car drove the plot as much as it drove the characters, so it’s no wonder that Hawkeye Episode 3 did give brief nod to a ’72 Challenger. But live-action Kate and Clint don’t use it, even though there isn’t too great of a reason for why not.

    The Archer

The most iconic part of the car chase sequence in both the comic and series is that Hawkeye is leaning out the window shooting wild arrows that the other one hands to them at the Tracksuit Mafia. Hawkeye flipped the archer, though, and featured Kate as the one with the bow. This isn’t too surprising, as its a solid way to give her more time in the series as an archery master, something the comic had already established.

    The Reason for the Chase

Like I said, the Challenger drove the plot in the Hawkeye comic. Clint meets a woman while looking for labelling tape. He offers the buy the car, and they end up sleeping together. It turns out this woman is dangerously connected to the Tracksuit Mafia, and Clint calls Kate for help after the Mafia knocks him and and abducts the woman. This begins the care change, but they find her pretty easily, because she’s tied up in the backseat of the Challenger next to Clint’s tracker arrow. They take the Challenger and keep fleeing the Mafia following them.

In the series, Kate and Clint and solely escaping the Tracksuit Mafia. There’s no tied-up woman in the backseat—they’re simply trying not to be killed by Echo.

At the end of the day, if you enjoyed Hawkeye Episode 3’s car chase sequence, you can thank Matt Fraction and David Aja. It’s Aja’s art in particular that causes the original to standout—there’s an impressive amount of apparent movement on the page. Combined with the expertly layered panels that make it feel like you’re watching little details simultaneously with big moments, the original chase sequence in Hawkeye is one hell of a ride.

Murray Bartlett Accidentally Confirms Nick Offerman Joined HBO’s ‘The Last Of Us’

Sometimes you never know when you get a confirmation bout an actor joining a project. Normally, trades report when an actress or actor joined a project, but there are some they try to keep a secret. Just like with Bill Murray in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, they may just confirm it personally even if the studios wanted to avoid it becoming public information. Alternatively, a fellow actor might accidentally confirm it, which is the case here. In an interview with The Guardian, actor Murray Bartlett accidentally revealed that Nick Offerman is involved with HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us.

It’s co-created by Craig Mazin, who did Chernobyl. The scripts he’s written blew my head off. It’s an epic show, but beautifully human and intimate. We filmed it in Calgary. A lot of my scenes are with Nick Offerman. Playing off him was awesome.

Of course, this now raises the question of what character he might potentially be playing in the upcoming series. The series might stray in some ways from the original, especially with some set photos teasing elements from the game’s sequel getting implemented into the adaptation. So, while the core story might remain the same they’ll build up to a unique take on its core storyline moving forward. Of course, we won’t know for sure until the series officially premieres on HBO.

  • Leaked Live-Action ‘One Piece’ BTS Photo Offers First Look at Zoro’s Three-Sword Style

Leaked Live-Action ‘One Piece’ BTS Photo Offers First Look at Zoro’s Three-Sword Style

Just last month, actor Taz Skylar teased his kicking techniques for the role of Sanji in Netflix’s One Piece series. As the cast slowly arrived in South Africa, it opened the question of when they might start production. Future Zoro actor Mackenyu was the only one missing, as the others started preparing for their respective roles. Well, it looks like he may have arrived finally and work has started on bringing these characters and their unique fighting styles to life. Zoro is famous for this three-sword style – also knowns as Santōryū – and a new leaked image from stunt training offers our first look at it in action.

While it’s a bit hard to make out if this is a stunt double or Mackenyu himself, but we can definitely recognize that they are wielding the third sword during this training. If you are not familiar with the series, Zoro wields a blade in each hand with a third in his mouth, which the person is doing in this new photo which was provided by @OP_Netflix_Fan. It’s also a great confirmation that the team behind Netflix’s live-action adaptation is not going to shy away from the iconic elements of these characters.

As stated, it’s uncertain if this is actually the actor Mackenyu or a stunt double. We don’t know how long they’ll be investing in pre-production but it seems unlikely they might start production before Christmas, but we might get an announcement similar to the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. So, we might get a set photo with the cast as they enter production, but we’re still waiting for any other casting announcements for the supporting cast.

  • ‘The Boys’ Animated Anthology Series, ‘Diabolical’, Coming in 2022

‘The Boys’ Animated Anthology Series, ‘Diabolical’, Coming in 2022

The Boys was an absolute mega-hit for Amazon Prime, adapting and reimagining Garth Ennis’s popular comics. The series now has two seasons on Prime with a third one on the way, alongside a spinoff in development that focuses on the next generation of supes However, it seems that this isn’t the only other project in the works in the wonderfully vulgar and gory world of The Boys.

Amazon Prime and Karl Urban have announced that an eight-episode animated anthology series, Diabolical, set within the world of The Boys is coming in 2022. All eight episodes of the series are already near complete, but no specific release date has been given. Each episode in the series will feature a new writer, with some big names attached to the project. Awkwafina, Garth Ennis, Eliot Glazer and Ilana Glazer, Evan Goldberg and Seth Racioppa, Justin Roiland and Ben Bayouth, Andy Samberg, and Aisha Tyler were among the writers announced today.

The Boys head writer Eric Kripke had this to say on the reveal of Diabolical:

“We’re almost finished with eight episodes of our animated series, Diabolical. We gathered together some incredible creators and we gave them one rule…just kidding, there’s no rules. They blew the doors off it,”

No voice cast has been announced for the series just yet. Diabolical is set to be xecutively produced by Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, James Weaver, Evan Goldberg, Simon Racioppa, Garth Ennis, Pavun Shetty, Neal H. Moritz, Ori Marmur, Ken F. Levin, Jason Netter, Darick Robertson, Michaela Starr. Amazon Studios, Sony Pictures Television Studios, and Kripke Enterprises will produce the series.

  • James Gunn Teases More Potential ‘The Suicide Squad’ Spin Offs

James Gunn Teases More Potential ‘The Suicide Squad’ Spin Offs

The Suicide Squad spin off series, Peacemaker, is set to make its streaming debut on HBO Max in just over a month and will continue the story of John Cena’s Christopher Smith. The 8-episode series looks like it’ll pick up Smith’s story right where it left off, finding him working with some of Amanda Waller’s Task Force X aides and also introducing some new characters, including Freddie Stroma’s Vigilante. The footage we’ve seen so far looks seems to indicate the series will play to the strength’s the Cena brought to the character in The Suicide Squad and, if we’re being honest, looks like it’ll be a hell of a lot of fun.

Gunn genuinely seemed to love working on The Suicide Squad. He wrote and directed the film and took great care to develop the main characters, giving them all their time to shine. While Cena’s turn as Peacemaker certainly stood out for Cena’s willingness to be the butt of the joke, Harley Quinn, Ratcatcher 2, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, Rick Flagg and Bloodsport all took turns captivating audiences. While the film marked the end of the road for a couple of their stories, several of the characters walked away from the wild events of the film, leaving room for more stories to be told.

Gunn, who has always been responsive to fans on social media, was asked if there could be any more spin offs to The Suicide Squad, potentially for some of the characters mentioned above, and while he didn’t give a direct answer, he also didn’t say no.

    https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1467619864886099968

Gunn recently indicated he had some more ideas about potential DC properties he’d like to develop in the future, so perhaps another spin off series is among them. Could the stars align for an Idris Elba-led Bloodsport series? Earlier this year, Gunn indicated that the potential for such a series existed, though it wasn’t something in development at that time. Elba seemed to truly enjoy playing the character and should he be open to reprising the role, certainly carries the star power required to lead a big budget series. Time will tell what Gunn has in mind, but until then fans have plenty to look forward to with Peacemaker streaming on HBO Max on January 13th.

  • How the ‘Black Widow’ Post-Credit Scene Ties into ‘Hawkeye’

How the ‘Black Widow’ Post-Credit Scene Ties into ‘Hawkeye’

The most recent social media spot for the Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series Hawkeye promised some big surprises for the second half of the season. Prominent among the teases in the spot was a character, who was supposed to be mysterious, dressed in black with some rather interesting headgear. Fans of the comics immediately recognized that character as Yelena Belova, wearing her signature headgear from her days working for A.I.M. as the Adaptoid.

Rather than working for A.I.M., the MCU’s Yelena was revealed to be working for Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. While Val’s larger agenda is yet to be revealed, we do know that in the short-term, she has put Yelena on the trail of one of the heroes of Hawkeye: Clint Barton. When Val and Yelena met during the post-credit scene of this Summer’s Black Widow, we didn’t have enough information to fully understand the threat Yelena’s pursuit of Barton could pose. Thanks to a trade report, fans already knew Florence Pugh was going to appear in Hawkeye and the scene spelled out that she and Barton would be facing off against one another, but it wasn’t until fans worked through the first 3 episodes of the series that we could truly see the kind of trouble Belova could make for Clint.

The first 3 episodes of Hawkeye have spent a significant amount of time dealing with the fallout of Kate putting on the Ronin suit. The suit put Kate in danger, brought her and Clint together and put them both on the radar of the Tracksuits and their boss and, as we learned in Episode 3, “Echoes”, brings back painful memories for Maya Lopez as the Ronin was responsible for the death of her father. As Episode 3 ended, Clint’s secret was still safe but it seems like it’s only a matter of time until his past truly comes back to haunt him. And now that we can tie it all together, it seems like it’ll be Yelena that brings everything crashing down on Barton.

Who Is Valentina Working For? Val Is Back And Seen Recruiting Yelena Belova

Despite only a couple people being shown to have been aware that Clint was the man behind the Ronin mask, it turns out that Val, who seems to be pretty resourceful, was in the know all along. As our friend Caleb Borchers pointed out on Twitter, Val didn’t just sent Yelena after Clint, she sent her after Ronin Clint. And that’s going to cause Clint a whole lot more headaches.

It seems safe to say that once Yelena enters the picture, Clint’s secret identity will be revealed to all interested parties in some way. How will Kate deal with the fact that her hero is a murderer? How will Echo respond to finally learning the identity of her father’s killer? What will Wilson Fisk’s move be when he learns it was an Avenger that nearly wiped out his criminal empire? Of course, Yelena is operating on bad info from Val, so what will happen when she learns the truth about what happened to Natasha? The second half of this season might not quite have the surprises the spot promised, but it certainly will have a lot of drama all tied to Kate putting on that damn suit.

The first 3 episodes of Hawkeye are now streaming on Disney Plus.

‘Spider-Man: No Way’ Home Still a Work in Progress

OK, The 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' Reveal Was a Good Troll | WIRED

Despite having been screened recently and releasing in just under 2 weeks, Spider-Man: No Way Home is still not a finished product. While this is a common occurrence for VFX heavy films, that hasn’t stopped intrepid internet personalities from spinning it as a once-in-a-lifetime event that spells doom for the upcoming film. Doom…is that a hint? Are they VFXing Doom into the film?

8 Tom Holland Movies To Watch If You're Done Watching 'Spider-Man' & Still Can't Get Enough

For a film that’s not finished yet, Spider-Man: No Way Home looks like it’ll be the biggest money maker of 2021. Advance ticket sales for the film exceeded those of Avengers: Endgame and weren’t even remotely comparable to other Marvel films that released this year. Current domestic opening weekend projections put it between $190-250M, potentially more than doubling the current high water mark for 2021 which somehow came from Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Earlier this week, the Sony exec, in an interview with Fandango, let it be known that Sony and Marvel Studios would continue their collaboration on future Spider-Man films, likely much to the surprise of Kevin Feige. Here’s to hoping that when Feige finds out, they keep making these movies until 2099.

One of DC’s Oldest Properties Getting an Animated Adpatation

DC Nation Metal Men shorts | The Daily P.O.P.

Way back in 1962, DC Comics published Metal Men, a series about some “men” made of different metals. 60 years later, they’ll make their way to the big screen, or at least HBO Max, in an animated adaptation of the comic. Ron Clements, Celeste Ballard and John Musker, who worked on the animated Disney classic, The Little Mermaid, are working on the adaptation for DC. We truly are living in the golden or iron or lead or mercury or tin or platinum age of comic book adaptations.

You truly can’t make this shit up. Universal, who refuses to give up on their “monster-verse” has cast Nicolas Cage, who has been accused of actually being a vampire, has been cast as Dracula in Universal’s Dracula movie appropriately titled, Renfield. The film will star Nicholas Hoult as Renfield and Awkwafina as we don’t know who. The film will be directed by Chris McKay, who will almost certainly get around to making Nightwing as soon as he’s done with this one.

Cobie Smulders’ Secret Invasion Role is Confusion

With Nick Fury as the lead in the Marvel Studios streaming series Secret Invasion, it seemed a sure thing that Maria Hill would return despite not being a part of the official cast announcement. As it turns out, actress Cobie Smulders, who has portrayed Hill in at least 2 MCU films, is in Secret Invasion; however, thanks to the trade report about her involvement, we’re not quite sure who she is playing. While it would seem like she’d be back as Hill, the trade report mentioned she was playing a “newly created character”, so either they’re high or they just spoiled something major about the series.

It’s unclear if Grint is the lead and the project will explore the curious career choices of the actor, or if he’ll be a curiosity in the titular cabinet.

  • Latest ‘Peacemaker’ Trailer Includes Quite a Few Easter Eggs

Latest ‘Peacemaker’ Trailer Includes Quite a Few Easter Eggs

The brand new trailer for Peacemaker has finally arrived and gave us a much more in-depth look at the DC Extended Universe’s first TV series. John Cena will reprise the role of Christopher Smith, the man who will stop at nothing on his quest for peace. James Gunn returns after his work on The Suicide Squad to continue his journey and you can always bet that there’s going to be a ton of Easter eggs when he’s involved with a project. Even the latest trailer offered some great teases. So, let’s dive right into all the secrets the latest trailer offers us.

    The Extreme Temperature Helmet

When we first enter what has personally been dubbed “The Peacecave”, we’re greeted by a slew of Peacemaker helmets, which are all seemingly special and unique in their own way. One that’s noticeable for a split second is the helmet Peacemaker developed and donned back in The Peacemaker #5. The helmet was used to fight a molten lava monster and featured his iconic fin as a mohawk. It was styled after Vulcan, the God of Fire.

    The Classic Peacemaker Helmet

The Peacemaker we’ve seen so far in both The Suicide Squad and bits of Peacemaker have featured a more modernized take on the character’s look. But if you take a closer look in the Peacecave, you can spot quite a few takes on the character’s original helmet that feature an excessively large fin from one end to the other. While his helmet in The Suicide Squad keeps that base design, it certainly was quite a bit larger at one point.

    The Butterflies

Now, for a non-helmet-related Easter egg, we get our first look at something called “the butterflies.” Not much is known about them aside from that they’re small white bugs that are only glimpsed at in the trailer. Perhaps they are connected to the people we see with inhuman strength breaking through the glass. Civilians in the trailer can be seen acting like zombies in an almost mob mentality. We even see a woman who throws Peacemaker through a wall. It’s unknown where the butterflies come from, but they seem to be quite similar to Starro but are an original idea for the series.

    The X-Ray Helmet

Another helmet within the lineup is the so-called X-Ray helmet, which is pretty self-explanatory as to what its intended use is for. But It seems like Peacemaker could use the helmet to see who’s been taken over by a butterfly. We see him wear the helmet later on and it might be his best bet to uncover who has or hasn’t been affected by this new threat.

    The Privateer

Briefly in the trailer, a poster can be seen for what looks like a movie called “The Privateer.” It may have ties to an existing character within DC Comics. The Privateer was an alias used by Mark Shaw, better known as the Manhunter. It was his heroic alter-ego, joining the Checkmate organization and running it at one point. But the character also joined the Suicide Squad at one point, even going on to work for ARGUS.

    Task Force….What Now?

Early on in the trailer, we hear newcomer Leota Adebayo mention that they aren’t an officially sanction Argus Task Force and that they are “on their own”. This is strange considering they have been operating teams with much worse people than that for years now. We also see in the post-credit sequence from The Suicide Squad that they were given the mission to look after Peacemaker. Perhaps the events of the story may have led to them becoming their own splinter team.

  • Avatar Studios Working on a 2D/CG Animation Style Similar to ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’

Avatar Studios Working on a 2D/CG Animation Style Similar to ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’

It was quite a surprise when the creators of Avatar left Netflix’s live-action adaptation. While that project is still moving forward, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko founded an entire studio that exists to purely create more Avatar: The Last Airbender content moving forward. Well, it seems we may have gotten our first update on their approach for future projects. In a new listing for the newly found subsidiary of Nickelodeon Animation Studio, they are looking to cast a Pipeline TD with some insights into what the job requires. There is one particular line that stands out:

Develop and maintain an outstanding and customized look for the show that will require the integration of traditional 2D and CG elements

As Avatar News points out, who caught the news first, this style is quite similar to how Sony brought the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to life. It’s also become quite a popular design choice for projects, such as the recently released League of Legends series, Arcane. It offers the developers a way to create a unique art style to add an additional flair to their productions. Their previous two projects, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, were given a classic 2D animation style.

It’ll be interesting to see if they standardized the design for all their projects moving forward, or it’s mainly for a specific project. They want to explore the different eras that were only mentioned or teased in the previous two projects. It would be a clever idea to have a unique animation style that represents stories in a specific timeline. We’ll see what direction they are heading.

  • ‘Turner and Hooch’ Canceled at Disney+ After One Season

‘Turner and Hooch’ Canceled at Disney+ After One Season

It looks like the dog days are over for the cast and crew of Disney+’s Turner & Hooch. The streaming service has put an end to the reboot of 1989’s popular buddy cop franchise after only a single season, according to series star Reginald VelJohnson. The actor dropped the news during a recent chat with ComicBook.com, after being asked about the cloudy future of the show. He started by revealing there is still hope for Turner & Hooch, as Disney looks to shop the project to other networks. VelJohnson elaborated:

Well, as far as I know, they’re trying to sell it to another network or something like that. That’s what I heard. But as of now, it’s not going to be picked up, I don’t think. It was fun to do. And working with the actors was great fun and I hope so, whatever they decided to do I’m with it. It’s okay. I enjoyed doing the sequel and, hopefully, we’ll have some time to do it again. But if not, I was glad for the experience.

    Reginald VelJohnson

The actor, best known for his work on Die Hard and Family Matters, was the only person from the original Turner & Hooch film to return for the legacy series. He portrayed the partner of Tom Hanks‘ character, who did not make an appearance on the Disney+ show. Josh Peck replaced Hanks as the franchise lead, playing the son of the now-deceased hero. It centered around Peck’s character being paired with an unruly dog, much like his father before him. It’s joined the small number of shows to get canceled ahead of the potential second season and a shame given its popularity with fans.
