‘Pachinko’ Star Joins Apple TV+’s ‘Godzilla’ Monsterverse Spinoff

Apple TV+ and Legendary Television’s untitled Godzilla series is adding to its cast. According to Deadline, Pachinko star Mari Yamamoto has joined the cast of the monster series, tentatively titled Hourglass. The series is set in the aftermath of the battle between Godzilla and the Titans in San Francisco. It follows a family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets that link them to the secret organization, Monarch. It will also directly connect to Legendary’s Monsterverse.

While details on her role are under wraps, Yamamoto joins a cast that already includes Anna Sawai (F9: The Fast Saga), Ren Watabe (461 Days of Bento), Kiersey Clemons (Transparent, Zack Snyder’s Justice League), Joe Tippett (Mare of Easttown), and Elisa Lasowski (Versailles). • Netflix’s ‘One Piece’s is Slowly Wrapping Up Production

Netflix’s ‘One Piece’s is Slowly Wrapping Up Production

It looks like One Piece may be slowly winding down production in South Africa, or rather Cape Town to be exact. As shared by Caitlin Rollino on her Instagram account, she reveals that the main unit has seemingly wrapped on the One Piece live-action series. There hasn’t been an official statement in regards to the project having fully wrapped up, but it definitely seems like production is slowly nearing its end.

It’s crazy to think that we’ve been following it since January when the production first started getting rolling. Seven months later, it has seemingly entered its final stages and hopefully further hints when we might expect its release. Director Marc Jobst seemingly hinted that the first two episodes wrapped production in May. The series has been teased to be among Netflix’s largest, especially with the news that this live-action adaptation may have a budget on par with other Marvel Studios productions.

With a talented team behind it, there’s an exciting potential with this adaptation. The cast is quite excited to bring this project to life, the showrunners are big fans of the source material and the sets promise that it’s truly the original brought to life. The mangaka behind the series, Eiichiro Oda, also is heavily involved and it does add a stamp of approval that some other projects might not have. Anime adaptations are a difficult challenge but we said the same about superheroes not too long ago. Perhaps this series is the perfect choice to accomplish that very goal.

  • ‘Warrior’ Actor Joins Live-Action ‘One Piece’

‘Warrior’ Actor Joins Live-Action ‘One Piece’

It looks like the various roles are getting filled for the upcoming live-action adaptation of One Piece. While we’re still waiting for the next official reveal by the team behind the franchise, it does seem like actor Grant Ross, known for his work on Warrior, American Monster and The Kissing Booth has joined the production as Genzo.

For those that might not know, Genzo is an important character in the Arlong Park Arc. While not a major role in the One Piece mythos, he plays a vital role in Nami’s upbringing and it’s great to see their casting be as close as possible to the original manga. He famously wore a windmill in his cap which would be fun to see in live-action. Ross was excited about the announcement and shared some great-looking fan art on how similar he looks to his manga counterpart.

The interesting reveal is that he seemingly has a role in an episode directed by Emma Sullivan. The surprise is that she was confirmed to direct the episodes he’s in. While there’s a chance that the Arlong Park Arc could be a multi-episode storyline, she was confirmed to be tackling the storyline of the Baratie. Many theorized that might’ve taken up multiple episodes as well.

So, it opens up the question if Baratie is only one episode or if the Doctor Who director is also responsible for every episode involving these two storylines. Genzo is only in that one storyline but there’s a chance he only included the director that was publicly known. Of course, we won’t know for sure until it is officially revealed.

  • Owen Wilson Says Marvel Scolded Him For Talking About ‘Loki’

Owen Wilson Says Marvel Scolded Him For Talking About ‘Loki’

Marvel Studios is famously secretive about their upcoming projects, and it would seem Loki star Owen Wilson learned this the hard way. The veteran actor has grown to become a fan favorite member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as jet ski loving TVA Agent Mobius M. Mobius. Wilson will be back for the show’s second season, which is currently filming in London, but stated in a recent interview with ComicBook that he’s keeping his lips sealed on his character’s future.

Asked to give more information on Loki and Mobius, the former Royal Tennenbaums star revealed he made the mistake of saying too much in the past, and heard about it from Marvel themselves. The actor began with a brief, timid response to the question of what fans should expect in Loki Season 2:

Well, I do think that… you know, we’ll see what happens with this one. I immediately get kind of self-conscious because they’re so kind of uptight.

    Owen Wilson

Wilson is, of course, referring to Marvel’s long history of shushing performers who are eager to give away details on their upcoming work. When pressed on whether or not he’s been scolded by the company in the past, Wilson gave an earnest and succinct answer:

    Yes. Yeah, multiple times.

    Owen Wilson

It seems nobody is safe from Marvel’s content lockdown. The actor has had fun with the strict set of rules in the past, however, once joking that Marvel boss Kevin Feige sent him an anonymous, threatening text after he let slip that Mobius would have a mustache in Loki’s first season. Hopefully, Wilson makes it to the premiere of the next season, and fans can be happy with all the surprises the show’s creative team has in store.

  • REVIEW: ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ Episode 1

REVIEW: ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ Episode 1

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is about to be one of your new favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. While much of the first episode was dedicated to establishing Jennifer Walters as an All-New, All-Different Hulk, all the elements are in place for a wildly delightful half-hour comedy series. She-Hulk takes the MCU to a place it honestly has not touched before now, which is somehow both smaller in scale yet feels like an A-list production in terms of its enjoyability and presence in the wider universe. The Marvel Studios universe has now expanded to a place where stories that seemed far-fetched a few years ago have a comfortable place in the MCU, and She-Hulk is opening the door for all of them.

As the “origin” episode, the premiere is not particularly representative of the rest of the series in terms of its structure. She-Hulk is, ultimately, an episodic show that focuses on week-by-week or case-by-case stories involving Jen’s legal career. Still, the amount of time spent on her origin and development as a Hulk with Bruce Banner manages to be thorough enough to connect Jen to a specific, growing section of the MCU and explain enough to allow the show to proceed without too many questions about who or what she is as distractions. In fact, the early fourth wall break serves to precisely lay out the intent of the episode yet still center everything within Jen’s non-superhero life.

The cast in the first episode is limited, but there is no question that Tatiana Maslany is an absolute star in the role. Criticism about She-Hulk’s CGI will not go away even with the final product, but any inability to accept it and move on is only to the detriment of the viewer. The visual effects take nothing away from Maslany’s performance, She-Hulk’s general character, or the ability to enjoy She-Hulk. Mark Ruffalo, who practically shares the episode with Maslany, is similarly phenomenal in his role here. In fact, it is arguably Ruffalo’s best portrayal of Bruce Banner in the MCU.

Because of how She-Hulk nestles itself within the MCU in such a specific casual-yet-important way, its uniqueness cannot be overstated. Quite frankly, after this series, the MCU can never go back to the all-encompassing tone it has had in the past. The show is the perfect final series of Phase Four, which generally felt like an experimental phase to diversify the types and styles of MCU projects. She-Hulk captures the self-awareness of the MCU alongside its tone of focusing on the more day-to-day reality of the universe. If any project has ever invoked feeling “comic book-y,” it is hands-down this one. The post-credits scene is perhaps a perfect example of the ground-level, casual-framing nature of this series. Gossip about Captain America’s virginity, or lack thereof, is now canon to the MCU, whereas before it mostly existed on Twitter.

She-Hulk has a comedic tone that isn’t slapstick or cheap. It feels more mature, real, and grounded in both reality and the universe it exists in. Billed as a half-hour comedy, it feels far from simply being a goofy and empty attempt at laughs. But the superhero elements in this episode do tip the scales a bit further away from truly feeling like an episodic comedy. A challenge going forward for the show will be allowing it to have its own comedic personality that rises above what it seeks to accomplish in terms of any larger MCU plot. For example, hints of a building Hulk universe are obvious in this episode. There are no indications yet that it cannot remain relatively self-isolated, and viewers should be prepared for the end of the “superhero origin” part of She-Hulk’s story early in the series, and perhaps this first episode served to cover and complete it.

It should also be recognized that even with only one episode as a reference, She-Hulk so far seems to be the MCU’s most successful attempt at a woman-led project. Maslany’s performance combined with the script itself is reminiscent of contemporary, quality non-comic book female-driven TV. Jen’s character has so much more texture as it is being written by women seemingly without any hesitation to be unceremoniously honest and genuine as to what Jen’s life (Hulk for or not) would look and feel like. Ms. Marvel also did a phenomenal job with Kamala Khan, but writing and portraying an adult woman with more mature themes feels incredibly fresh in the MCU, even if overdue.

In sum, She-Hulk’s premiere episode has every indication that the series will be a hit. The tone of the show is one that is designed to be simply fun, enjoyable, and even pander to fan service. Not every show or style of humor works for every person, but it is difficult to imagine any major widespread criticism (aside from the CGI) that is not based, in part, on some people’s unfounded discomfort with female superheroes or straight-up misogyny. The toxic “M-She-U” crowd will surely keep yelling into oblivion. But if She-Hulk exemplifies the “M-She-U”, it only proves that that universe is an excellent place to be.

  • ‘She-Hulk’: Episode 1 Ragnarok Easter Egg Explained

‘She-Hulk’: Episode 1 Ragnarok Easter Egg Explained

Episode one of Marvel Studios’ latest Disney Plus streaming series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, gave audiences plenty to chew on. The immediate fourth-wall break, the appearance of one of the MCU’s douchiest characters to date and the breakthrough appearance by Jameela Jamil’s Titania were certainly all eye-catching and worth discussion, however, another brief Easter egg is one that might foreshadow the biggest payoff.

Well before Episode One, “A Normal Amount of Rage”, aired, fans were well aware that a car crash was responsible for Jennifer Walters gaining the incredible powers of her cousin, Bruce Banner’s alter ego, the Hulk. What fans did not know, however, was that the car crash was caused by a Sakaaran ship that came to Earth in search of the Hulk. Why would that ship be on Earth? What could the Sakaarans want with the Hulk? A potential answer comes from both the comics and the ship’s appearance could lend credence to a nearly year-old rumor.

The planet of Sakaar was introduced in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok and although the Hulk’s adventures on the planet are done, it doesn’t mean the consequences of those adventures have all come to bear. As explained in Thor: Ragnarok, time moves in mysterious ways on Sakaar, so while Hulk may not have been gone too very long as perceived by his friends on Earth, he also may have spent quite a bit of time on Sakaar.

Thor: Ragnarok very clearly adapted bits and pieces of one of the Hulk’s most popular Marvel Comics’ stories: Planet Hulk. Miek and Korg, who were both major players in Greg Pak’s Planet Hulk, were introduced in Ragnarok, but there were another half-dozen or so other major characters who never appeared. Foremost among them are Caiera, who Hulk married on Sakaar, and their son, Skaar.

Rumors have long pointed to the potential appearance of Skaar in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law and the appearance of the Sakaaran ship on Earth does little, if nothing, to dispel those rumors. Fans of the Marvel Comics might remember that Skaar first appeared in the midst of the World War Hulk event; notably, a World War Hulk film is rumored to be in development at Marvel Studios.

Could the Sakaaran ship be the precursor to Bruce Banner meeting his son, Skaar? Could that meeting be a precursor to a World War Hulk movie being announced, given the rumors that Universal’s distribution rights for Hulk films are set to expire in 2023? Hopefully, these questions will be answered in the near future, allowing fans to start guessing about a whole new set of possibilities.

  • Latest Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Castings Hint at Syrup Village Arc

Latest Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Castings Hint at Syrup Village Arc

It looks like some small news is trickling out for the live-action Netflix adaptation of One Piece. Matt Owens and Steve Maeda have been busy bringing one of manga’s most iconic stories to life. with the uncertainty surrounding past adaptations, it’s no wonder that some are cautiously optimistic but the set videos and castings have been quite promising. We knew that a shorter runtime would lead to fewer stories being included but it does seem like we’re definitely going to get a flashback for Usopp and the iconic battle of Syrup Village.

As first shared by @OP_Netflix_Fan first, actress Bianca Oosthuizen has seemingly revealed that she will be taking on the role of Sham, a member of the Kuroneko Pirates. The character might not be as memorable as the many others we meet along the Strawhat’s voyage, but it definitely confirms that we’ll see the Kuroneko pirates make their live-action debut in the series. That is not all, as Chanté Grainger has also seemingly been confirmed as Usopp’s mother, Banchina.

It should be noted that Oosthuizen also notes that she worked on an episode directed by Emma Sullivan. This reveal adds an interesting question, as we know that she was responsible for the Baratie episode as well. It does seemingly hint that these two arcs may take up an episode each. We don’t know if Baratie could also get split up into two episodes due to how much it covers but we’ll probably have to wait quite a bit longer before we find out.

As such, it’s safe to say that Syrup Village will be given some time during the show’s runtime. It does make you wonder how they might adapt some elements of Usopp’s origin and how he joins the crew, as it’s one of the lesser liked arcs in the storyline. Still, their addition does keep us tied until we get some more official news whenever we get our next major casting announcement for some big roles.

  • ‘She-Hulk’ Writer is the Reason Marvel Put Abomination in ‘Shang-Chi’

‘She-Hulk’ Writer is the Reason Marvel Put Abomination in ‘Shang-Chi’

Tim Roth is currently pulling off one of the most unexpected comebacks in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he couldn’t have done it without writer Jessica Gao. The She-Hulk: Attorney at Law creative recently sat down with Comic Book’s Phase Zero podcast to discuss the debut of her new series, and revealed in the process that she is the reason for Roth‘s return to the Marvel fold. Before Gao boarded the upcoming Disney+ project, the British actor’s Gamma-irradiated baddie was a bit of a one-off character in the franchise. He opposed Edward Norton‘s Bruce Banner in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, and though he survived the events of the film, he has mostly been disregarded by Marvel Studios in the years since. That changed with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, last year’s surprise hit that featured the Abomination in a quick cameo appearance.

According to Gao, it was actually her She-Hulk pitch to Marvel that sealed the deal on Emil Blonsky becoming a player in the MCU once more. She explained to Comic Book that she had envisioned Blonsky as part of her series from the very beginning, but was worried Marvel might turn the idea down after so much time away from the character:

So Abomination, Emil Blonsky, was in my original pitch and at that point, the last time we saw him was in 2008, The Incredible Hulk. I had no idea what their relationship to this character was anymore. I don’t know if they had any plans but it was a story I wanted to tell so I just put it in there. What’s the worst that could happen? I don’t get the job. Look, I have not gotten the job so many times at Marvel it was like old hat to me. I had no more fear. I was like Daredevil. I was the woman with no fear now.

    Jessica Gao

She then dropped the intriguing tidbit that Marvel Studios was so on board with her concept, they added Abomination to Shang-Chi just to remind audiences of his existence before She-Hulk‘s release. Gao elaborated:

Because he was built in to be such a big part of the show in that original pitch and in the writer’s room, we really like, we were creating this whole story for him. Because everything in Marvel is connected, that was actually why he then was put in Shang-Chi, because he was in our show. That way, it was kind of to seed him so that people can get excited but also remember him and it kind of forced people to go, ‘Oh, I should go back and check in on him and remember who he is and what all of that was about.’

    Jessica Gao

It seems Hulk’s former rival will have a lot to do when She-Hulk: Attorney at Law hits the small screen on August 18th. Gao‘s comments may also indicate The Incredible Hulk will have a more important role in the grand scheme of the MCU going forward. After all, the writer’s final comment implicates Marvel boss Kevin Feige as the perpetrator behind seeing Abomination back into the mainstream so seamlessly. When asked whose idea it was to put the monster in Shang-Chi, Gao replied:

It’s Kevin. All roads lead to Kevin.

  • ‘She-Hulk’s Composer Took Inspiration from ‘The Good Wife’ and ‘Ally McBeal’

‘She-Hulk’s Composer Took Inspiration from ‘The Good Wife’ and ‘Ally McBeal’

Marvel Studios’ latest TV venture is soon going to grace Disney+, as they venture out into the world of legal comedies. With Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters at the helm, we’re getting a little something different this time around. As such, a new challenge was given to composer Amie Doherty, who had to find the perfect sound to accompany the latest Disney venture, and it seems she looked towards others from the genre for inspiration.

As revealed in an interview at the She-Hulk L.A. premiere, Doherty talked about how she took inspiration from classics like Ally McBeal and the very successful The Good Wife series for how to create a unique soundtrack for this Disney+ series. She wanted to bring something unique to it as she had to balance the many sides of this project.

It’s interesting how she highlighted that she brought these two worlds together with the project. There was a time where YouTubers made the case that the Marvel Cinematic Universe lacked a recognizable soundscape but projects like Avenger: Endgame used character’s themes for their impactful moments. The franchise has come a long way and it’s great to see how their new, more creative ventures offer unique opportunities to further diversify the MCU.

  • ‘She-Hulk’ Writer Sets the Record Straight on Ghost Rider Rumors

‘She-Hulk’ Writer Sets the Record Straight on Ghost Rider Rumors

Rampant and ridiculous rumors accompany the production of every Marvel Studios project and their next project, the Disney + streaming series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, is no different. While the show is loaded with cameos and appearances by no less than a dozen characters, known and unknown, it looks like one character can safely be scratched off the list.

According to head writer Jessica Gao, who spoke to Deadline at the green carpet premiere of She-Hulk, fans should not expect to see Johnny Blaze in the upcoming series.

While rumors of a Ghost Rider appearance have circulated online for months, a recent trailer for the series really fueled the fire that Johnny Blaze would be in the streamer. Fans caught a glimpse of a blurry poster that read “Donny Blaze” and believed it to read “Johnny Blaze.” Despite efforts to clarify what was seen on the poster, a section of fans clung tightly to the belief that Donny Blaze was either actually Johnny or related to him. As Gao explains multiple times to the disbelieving interviewer, Donny Blaze isn’t Johnny and is “just a magician who picked a stage name he thought was going to get a lot of attention.

No Jonny Blaze and fans will have to wait a few weeks to see Donny Blaze in action, but She-Hulk: Attorney At Law debuts on August 18th on Disney +.
