This article, like the last few that I’ve published tonight, is not meant to be scoops or pieces where I claim facts. This one, like the others, is just me picking apart the trailers we all saw today and being a fan. And tonight there was one last thing in my mind that wouldn’t let me go to bed: a possible High Evolutionary Easter Egg in the new WandaVision trailer.
A couple of scenes in the new trailer introduce a new actor named Herb, who seems to be hanging out with Kathryn Hahn’s Agnes. How do we jump from 70’s or 80’s Herb to High Evolutionary? In the comics, the High Evolutionary, whose true name was Herbert Wyndham, had a major role in the backstory of Wand Maximoff including the recent 2015 retcon which took away her and Pietro’s mutantness and made them failed experiments of Wyndham’s.
I’m certainly not claiming that Herb will be the High Evolutionary in the series (although that would be AMAZING); I’m simply suggesting that Marvel Studios could have chosen any of 1000000000 names for Agnes’ friend and that by choosing Herb, they were at least Easter Egging us in one very specific direction.
WandaVision begins streaming on January 15th on Disney Plus.
There’s an interesting premise that’s called the “Rule of Three”. The rule of three states that the first time you see/say/do something, it’s known as an isolated incident. If it occurs a second time, then that’s known as a coincidence. But if it happens a third time, then it becomes a pattern. The rule of three can be applied to many things in life. But today we’re going to be applying that logic to Marvel Studios’ recent activity concerning WandaVision. Now on November 12th, Marvel revealed the release date for WandaVision with this teaser of the TVs shifting through the eras:
Now a lot of people might not recognize the second poster but it was actually the second to last shot of the trailer, which is when the TV starts to go into static and the room starts to blend into another before going back to normal. Remember this shot?
(*NOTE: Now here’s where things get interesting and I put my name as Superhero Theorist to good use.I’m writing this part the night before it happens at 11:54 pm my time. But I wanted to write this in case it does happen. If Marvel Studios posts another poster today at 2:00 pm my time (1:00 pm EST), and it follows the pattern in my head, then the next poster should be the one in the 70s).
Present-day Superhero Theorist here and it turns out I was right. Marvel posted yet ANOTHER WandaVision poster today at exactly 2:00 pm my time, the one based on the 70s portion of the show.
Well, let’s start with the key points that make up this pattern. What do they have in common? Well:
They’re all shots from the trailer Marvel posted back in November.
They each belong to a particular era that will be explored in WandaVision. First with the 60s, then the 70s, and now the 80s.
They’re going in progressive order from the trailer.
Now, that last point is very important. They’re posting shots from the trailer from each era, every day for the past three days at 2:00 pm EST. There’s a pattern, which means the next posters for the next 2 days are going to be the last remaining shots from the trailer. Specifically, the 80’s and modern eras trailer shots shown below.
But the most important part of all this is the progressivity of it all. It’s almost like they’re counting down to something as each day passes by. So, if we take into consideration the trailer from November, there are 6 key shots. And if it is a countdown, then each poster signifies a day in the countdown:
The last shot [50’s] (posted on Friday)
The glitch shot [60’s] (posted yesterday)
The 70s shot (posted today)
The 80s shot (might be posted tomorrow)
The modern Halloween shot (might be posted on Tuesday)
So, if Marvel Studios is indeed doing a countdown as I predict it’s doing, then what happens when the trailer shots/posters run out? That’s where things start to align. They could post another poster on Wednesday outside of the scope of Wanda’s Imagination and we step out of the realm of sitcoms and into the realm of the MCU. Or they could post another trailer, the day before Disney’s Investor Day on Dec. 10th to hype up the fans and investors for what’s to come. The focus of that event will be “the Company’s direct-to-consumer streaming services” aka Disney+. Now whether or not we will get another look at WandaVision before, or during Investor Day remains to be seen, though I find it hard to believe that Marvel posting these would be a coincidence. One way or another, I’m certain that we’re bound to get a new look at WandaVision soon.
Official Plot Synopsis: Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, “WandaVision” is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision—two super-powered beings living idealized suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems. WANDAVISION PREMIERES EXCLUSIVELY ON DISNEY+ ON JANUARY 15TH.
Iron Studios held one of their panels at the virtual event CCXP Worlds: A Journey of Hope. There they discussed what kind of collectibles they are cooking up for next year. The panel, hosted by Marcelo Bassoli and Renan Pizii, kicked off the show with a look at their brand new Mandalorian collectible figure, which also includes Grogu in his pod from the first season.
During the panel, the team at Iron Studios talked about the future of the Star Wars collectibles. They seem to be looking into capturing moments that haven’t happened yet, or we have yet to see in the franchise, such as Lando Calrissian on Tatooine. They also mentioned Obi-Wan on the famous sand planet, so they might be hinting at the upcoming untitled Kenobi show for Disney+. The panel then shifted towards Marvel and Marvel Studios’ collectibles. Now before the panel even started, they teased the future slate of films that would be coming in 2021 by presenting the logos for Spider-Man, Venom: Let there be Carnage, Eternals, Black Widow, and Shang-Chi.
Not only did they tease the upcoming Marvel film salte, but they also talked a lot about how Iron Studios would be involved with developing collectibles for the Disney+ series. They echoed the words of Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige that fans will have to follow the movies and the Disney+ series for this upcoming phase of the MCU. They will be making collectibles based on all of the Disney+ shows before showcasing the various logos once more.
Iron Studios teased that they have already 3 new collectible figures created for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but that they are still not allowed to show them. It’ll most likely be figures of Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, and Baron Zemo. As for WandaVision, they gave us a brand new look at Wanda and Vision’s comic-accurate costumes for the series from the Halloween episode.
Notice the WandaVision icon at the bottom of the statues with the combined W and V. They did repeat a few words about the series that we already heard before. Marcelo and Renan talked about how the Disney+ series will be something we’ve never seen before from the MCU in terms of visuals and storytelling. They also mentioned that they’re going to be working on new concepts for Vision and Wanda, as everything we’ll see was created from Wanda’s imagination. This is a surprise reveal, as it once again confirms that most of the events throughout the series will be the result of Wanda’s vision. Alongside this announcement, they confirmed that more figures are being developed based on the Infinity Saga.
We got some great shots and video out of New York this week at the Hawkeye series began filming. It was great to have Hailee Steinfeld finally confirmed as Kate Bishop, however the real spotlight stealer is none other than the very handsome, very smart, very, very, very good boy: Pizza Dog!! As soon as pictures emerged of this gorgeous golden retriever, people went gaga over him. And how could they not?
We at Murphy’s Multiverse were very pleased to be able to bring you an exclusive first look at Lucky the Pizza dog. Yesterday, it appears Twitter user @BRMarvelNews discovered the identity of Pizza Dog and found his Instagram page (jolt.of.genius) which showcases his various adventures with his owner Jacqui Johnson and Annie, a beautiful Golden girl who shares in some of the acting duties as well.
Check out some Instagram posts of Jolt (AKC registered name and titles: Dahling Electrify My Soul CGCA DN DJ RATI RATN BCAT) here:
BUT WAIT!! There’s MORE Marvel doggy casting news on the way! Twitter user @WandaMaximoofff spotted an interesting entry on the Animal Casting Atlanta page:
The website mentions this handsome guy is in an upcoming Marvel feature, and with his looks and a name like “Sparky” it seems a bit too perfect that he probably is playing WandaVision’s very own doggy wonder!
Incidentally, I wonder what will happen when they meet up with CaptainMarvel’s Goose. Hmm… Flerkens and dogs get along okay, right? I’m sure they all love Pizza.
For more pictures and a little video of Jolt as Pizza Dog, HaileeSteinfeld and JeremyRenner filming Hawkeye in New York this week, check out this link DailyMail.com
Another day, another merch leak that gives us a look at an MCU superhero! This time, courtesy of Captain Marvel News, we have our first look at Teyonah Parris’s Monica Rambeau in what most certainly appears to be her “Spectrum suit.
Parris is playing the grown up version of the character we first met in Captain Marvel and her brief appearance in the WandaVision trailer indicates she’s going to find herself forcibly removed from Wanda’s bubble reality of Westview. Could this be the event that leads to Monica somehow gaining powers somewhat similar to her comic book counterpart? The 616 version of Monica got some pretty serious powers after being near an explosion and took on mantle of Captain Marvel (among many others) over the years. We know that in the MCU, Monica is working for SWORD and while the black and white color scheme lines up nicely with her comic book counterpart, it also looks like she may be sporting a SWORD logo on the neck area of her shirt. We’ll have to wait just a bit longer to see how it all plays out, but this is certainly a nice nod to Monica’s comic book past and, hopefully, her MCU future.
With the news that Deadpool 3 is in development, Charles and Charles dare to discuss how the Merc with a Mouth will fit in the MCU! We also talk the Black Panther 2 news, WandaVision’s release date and review Chapters 11 and 12 of The Mandalorian. Have a listen!!
We still have about two months to go until WandaVision is finally released. Marvel Studios’ first Disney+ series will focus on the suburban life of Wanda and Vision. We still know very little about what would turn the small town of Westview into a gateway to an alternative dimension. Whatever may be the reason, it will be quite interesting to see Marvel Studios play around with classic sitcom clichés as both slowly unravel what is happening around them. Now that the series has a premiere date, it means that Marvel and Disney can start promoting the show more. Empire has an exclusive story coming for the show and shared it with two amazing looking covers.
This month’s exclusive subscriber cover by Max Löffler features a futuristic vision of The Vision himself, with Wanda’s silhouette always front and centre in his mind – only available to existing Empire subscribers. READ MORE: https://t.co/8V9nVbmdwkpic.twitter.com/HVIKiYndiN
I really have to say that the cover by Max Löffler looks amazing. It also may be quite a big tease for what we can expect in the story. Vision was killed by Thanos and was just an empty husk. Now, she is trying to piece him back together so he can be brought back to life. Her action has unleashed chaos upon the small suburban area, which could be the cause of some external forces playing with her abilities for personal gain. Our very own Edward Rose created a theory around the latest teaser, which you can check out right here. We are so close to finally seeing something MCU related, especially now that Black Widow was delayed by an entire year. This Disney+ show will start a brand new era for the franchise, so we will see just how crazy the show truly will go once the strange couple is stuck in a crazy alternative dimension.
After months of speculation, Marvel Studios finally revealed the release date for the upcoming Disney+ series; WandaVision. Along with that release date announcement, came a short teaser:
Now at first glance, this looks like a normal moving poster or just a small teaser that you’d see on their Instagram stories just to promote the show. But we all know Marvel Studios better than that. Sometimes, they’ve been known in the past to sneak some secrets or teases here and there. So, let’s take a look at this small teaser for a moment and notice what we see.
SHOT 1: 1960s
The teaser opens up with a pretty straightforward shot. The scene is in black and white and it showcases Wanda and Vision in their 60s phase. This portion of the show is the one that we’ve seen the most of in teasers. It’s also been the segment of the show that we know more details about. We know it’s inspired by comedy classics from the ’60s like The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched, The Twilight Zone, and I Love Lucy. We also know that it was filmed in front of a live studio audience. And it been the source of much of WandaVision’s promotional materials.
SHOT 2: 1970s
The next shot fast forwards to the next decade which would be the 1970s. While we know little about this era in particular, we know that at some point during this portion of the show we might see Wanda’s pregnancy start here and develop further along during this specific episode. We expect this era might be inspired by The Brady Bunch & All in the Family.
SHOT 3: 1980s
We eventually transition to the 1980s, where we see a standard 80s double knob TV, the color is finally present in the entirety of the room and the potted plant on the left changed. We know little about this era for the show but I predict this might be the part of the show where Wanda’s pregnancy is near her final trimester and she may give birth by the time we end our 80s tribute. I envision this era taking inspiration from Happy Days & The Golden Girls.
SHOT 4: 1990s
The 1990s is the other era that’s been heavily teased in the teasers. We know from this era that we’re going to see an episode centered around Halloween. We also expect the twins to have been born by this point in the series. This is also the segment in the series where i expect things might start to unravel for our two main heroes. I am definitely sensing a heavy reference of Full House for this episode in particular.
SHOT 5: MULTIPLE ERAS (HIDDEN DETAILS)
This is more of a “blink and you’ll miss it moment” in the teaser, where the TV starts spiraling out of control between images and it showcases all the eras in the TV that we had already seen previously, except 2 shots in particular. The one on the left looks to be from the 90s, when Wanda and Vision’s kid have already been born and the one on the right bears a resemblance to when Wanda and Vision start seeing the world change around them from black and white to color.
You also take notice of a couple of things in those shots. Primarily, when the 90s era tries to go to the next era, as we mentioned before, the TV starts spiraling out of control between images and it showcases all the eras in the TV that we had already seen previously. But while it’s spiraling out of control, you notice a couple of key details in the surroundings that start to fade in, but are immediately pushed back and kept hidden. So, let’s look closer at the image and look at the things that stand out.
The Victorian Wallpaper and Rose Painting: That Victorian wallpaper and Rose painting resembles the wallpaper and painting from the image above on the right. The one where Wanda and Vision start seeing the world change around them from black and white to color.
The weird lamp dangling above the TV: Notice that weird, teardrop lamp on top of the TV? Interesting lighting choice. Wanda Maximoff in particular has been known to have strange-looking lamps, particularly we can see them during the 1960s portion of the show, where we have a middle-eastern style lamp next to the front door. These styles of lamps also used to decorate Wanda’s room back in the Avengers Complex in Captain America: Civil War (2016). Fun detail no?
SHOT 6: FINAL SHOT
The final shot in the tease happens after everything went haywire and it just goes back to normal, revealing the release date of the show and the title card. A fun little detail about this shot is if you notice on the top left corner, the wall starts to peel off, revealing tv static. Very intriguing. Perhaps the teaser as a whole represented a metaphor for what might happen in the series.
BONUS: THE TVs
All of the TVs shown in the teaser are representative of their eras. But there was one TV that popped up for only about 5 frames before disappearing again.
The show features the return of Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis & Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, as well as the introduction of new faces, such as Teyonah Parris as an adult Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as the nosey neighbor, Agnes.
WANDAVISION PREMIERES EXCLUSIVELY ON DISNEY+ ON JANUARY 15TH.
Right now, we’re less than 2 months away from the debut of WandaVision (2021) on Disney+. I’m excited, you’re excited, we’re all excited. While working on my next Theory Thursday article, I was looking over some of the promo images from Entertainment Weekly and found something particularly interesting in one of them.
Anything interesting catch your attention (Besides the pineapple?) No? Let’s take a closer look then.
At the bottom right of the original image, you’ll notice Vision’s briefcase and the initials “T.D.”, engraved on top.
Now, I did my research on the briefcase and question found this Samsonite model.
A nearly exact model, except without the T.D. initials on top. Meaning that if this suitcase belongs to Vision, and he has those initials engraved onto the briefcase, it’s safe to assume that Vision has taken up a new alias if both he and Wanda are trying to live out their suburban lives undercover, without any ties to their previous lives. Vision in the comics is definitely no stranger to aliases in the comics. His most notable alias was Victor Shade.
SO, IF HE’S WEARING A DISGUISE AND HE HAS A NEW ALIAS, THEN WHAT DOES “T.D.” STAND FOR?
T.D. could mean many different names and it’s definitely not something ripped directly from the comics, though I believe I’ve zoned in on the possible first name for Vision’s new alias:
Why Thomas (Tom) D. you ask? Well, because of multiple connections Vision has to people with that name.
Character Co-Creator: Roy Thomas
Roy Thomas is a comic book legend, mainly for being Stan Lee’s first successor as editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics and is known for co-creating characters such as Vision, Ultron, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), etc. One could assume that the name pays homage to the man who created the character, but that’s not all.
The reincarnated son of Wanda and Vision. We know that the “new” Maximoff twins are bound to appear in the show and most parents across multiple time periods tend to name their sons after the father, so it isn’t that far of a leap in logic to think that it’s possible that perhaps Vision being named Tom or Thomas could be a reference to his future “soon-to-be born-son” Tommy. Bit of a bootstrap paradox for you there. (Look it up).
WANDAVISION PREMIERES EXCLUSIVELY ON DISNEY+ ON JANUARY 15TH.
It’s finally official: WandaVision will make its Disney+ debut on January 15, 2021. Even though Disney recently announced it would come out a bit earlier, this slight delay will ensure things are 100% ready to go on time. As someone who pays close attention to the buzz around MCU projects, a sentiment I’ve noticed from the general public and even hardcore Marvel fans towards WandaVision is one of intrigue, but confusion. This isn’t just the first Disney+ MCU series, it’s also the first to explore the world of classic TV shows, and from the trailers and clips alone, the plot isn’t really clear (heck, if you throw in the tidbits we’ve gotten from the Marvel crew and scoopers, it’s still pretty murky).
Superpowers and sitcoms aren’t elements that sound like they would mesh well on paper, but while we may not have seen a genre bend quite like this before – especially within a major franchise – there are a few shows and movies out there that may be able to give us a taste of what can happen when the two mix together. So while you’re waiting for WandaVision to begin, check out these other projects with similar genre crossover!
1. Pleasantville
This Gary Ross-directed film from 1998 doesn’t feature any superheroes but does star future web-slinger Tobey Maguire along with Reese Witherspoon. The two play a pair of teenage siblings who become trapped in the (fictional) 1950’s sitcom Pleasantville thanks to an oddball TV repairman played by the late Don Knotts. The movie is all about how the influences our two leads bring into the idyllic world of Pleasantville cause things to change from black-and-white to colored…both figuratively and literally, as the sitcom’s characters slowly change in this manner as they are exposed to more complex and even “scandalous” concepts.
As seen in WandaVision‘s trailer, the show will also start off as a black-and-white show which later changes to color. While we don’t yet know what exactly will cause the switch, it’s possible the concept could be based within a similar symbolism of things getting more colorful as the times change and become more complicated. And as we here on Murphy’s Multiverse have discussed aplenty, WandaVision’s sitcom world is more than likely created by Wanda herself as a way of escaping the trauma and grief of her true reality.
The idea of outsiders entering into this sitcom world also looks as though it will be explored in WandaVision, as we briefly see Monica Rambeau be seemingly shot out of it and (back) into the real world in the trailer. And there may very well be even more similarities between the film and Disney+ series, so Pleasantville is definitely worth a watch before WandaVision begins.
2. The Twilight Zone: “A World of His Own”
The Season 1 finale of the original run of the classic anthology series The Twilight Zone premiered in 1960 and is about a man who can make anyone materialize at his will by describing them into a mysterious dictation machine (and disappear by cutting that section of the tape out and burning it in the fireplace). It takes place in what was supposed to be a typical American middle-class household at the time and plays around with domestic life-based dynamics. The screenplay was penned by Richard Matheson, who also wrote many other science fiction and horror-based stories including the novel I Am Legend and the book and screenplay for the film adaptation of The Shrinking Man.
The Twilight Zone is not a sitcom, nor is this episode set up like one, but the idea of the power to create and destroy people out of thin air is something explored in some of the Marvel comic runs WandaVision is taking inspiration from and will probably come up in the series itself. It will likely be the explanation as to how Vision, who died (twice) in Avengers: Infinity War, is somehow alive in this series, and in the comics is how he and Wanda’s twins (seen briefly in the trailer) come to be.
How might they react if (when?) they discover they’re simply the creations of Wanda’s mind? “A World of His Own” may give us an idea as to how things could play out if this is the case in WandaVision, or at the very least may provide insight into how this power may affect Wanda herself.
3. Too Many Cooks
This short film first aired during Cartoon Network’s late night block “Adult Swim” back in 2014 and quickly gained a cult following online. It starts out like the intro for a typical 1990’s-era sitcom, but soon begins to take some strange and dark turns. To say any more would either give everything away or make the project sound even more confusing, but you can watch the full 11-minute video for yourself below. (Thanks, Adult Swim YouTube channel!)
While Too Many Cooks mixes the sitcom with pretty much every other genre except superheroes, the trajectory of things starting out quaint and charming and growing more and more bizarre and unsettling as it goes on looks much like how WandaVision is expected to play out. There are lots of strange little happenings and easter egg-esque things in the background of Too Many Cooks, much like WandaVision looks like it will have with MCU stories of the past as well as old sitcoms.
Of course, WandaVision will have much more time to dive into the concept of “sitcom gone wrong” but Too Many Cooks, perhaps more than any other piece of media out there, will probably provide a good taste of the tone the series will take. And if so, we’re in for quite the ride this winter.
