In January of 2020, it was revealed that Christian Bale had entered into negotiations to play a key role in the film. Thor: Love and Thunder was set to take place in Australia beginning in August of 2020. but with Shang-Chi delayed due to COVID-19, the start date has been pushed back. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson was brought in to work on the script which Waititi described as a rom-com.
