    Pitching The Live-Action Spider-Verse

There’s been a lot of Spider-Man related news making headlines these past few days. With the casting of Jamie Foxx as Electro and Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, many fans have started to speculate about how the multiverse plays into the plot of this film, considering the film is set between the events of WandaVision (2020) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Now, along with this news about the casting and the potential chance of the Multiverse becoming a major theme in this film, right now, the biggest question on everyone’s mind is whether or not the two previous iterations of the Spider-Man; Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, could have a role in this film.

Right now, there is no official confirmation as to whether or not Tobey and/or Andrew could reprise their roles in this film, or whether or not the Spider-Verse will be adapted to either the upcoming Spider-Man 3 film, or another film entirely, IF AT ALL, but the rumors of them returning are just too loud for anyone to ignore. Personally, as the Spider-Man fan that I am, I, like many, would freak out at the potential return of both Tobey and Andrew, but with that excitement, I also carry with me both concern and trepidation that it may not be done correctly. An event as big as this cannot simply be condensed into a two-hour film in my view. So today, I’m here to “pitch” if you will how Marvel Studios/Sony could “if done correctly”, create one of the best comic book films by dividing the story into three different arcs; Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield.

Tom’s Arc: The Rise of Peter Parker

One of the heaviest criticisms Tom Holland’s portrayal of the character faces is that Peter has been subjected to living under the Avengers’ shadow and their adventures, rather than be able to stand out on his own. His own ties to the MCU (Tony Stark, Nick Fury, Doctor Strange) have fans arguing that Peter Parker’s story as an individual with a world of his own, has not been explored in its entirety. For me, I like to see the last 2 Spider-Man films as the foundations for some decent world-building for Peter. In Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Peter learned that the suit does not make him Spider-Man, it’s the values of a hero that make him who he is. In Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Peter understood that while the world wanted him to be the next Iron Man, he could never live up to those expectations. The world didn’t need another Iron Man, it needed Spider-Man. And now, with these lessons in place, I think that we are finally one step closer to seeing the Spider-Man that most fans want him to be. The Spider-Man that doesn’t need to live in the shadows of the Avengers when he can stand out in the light of his own power. And who better to teach him that…than himself (himselves???).

Andrew & Tobey’s Arc: The Swan Song

The biggest criticisms amongst Spider-Man fans is that after being promised sequels to their respective franchises (mainly Spider-Man 4 and The Amazing Spider-Man 3), the projects were abandoned and many fans disliked that it essentially left their stories without a decent closure. The incorporation of the Spider-Verse storyline could allow fans to delve once again into the worlds of these Spider-Men.

We could see how Peter’s life in the “Raimi-Verse” continued following the events of Spider-Man 3 (2007), with him perhaps being married to Kirsten Dunst’s “Mary Jane Watson” and perhaps even having a child of their own. He could play an older version of Peter Parker, perhaps even be retired from being Spider-Man. As for Peter in the “TASM-Verse”, I could see him being a Spider-Man who still lives with the guilt of Gwen’s death from “The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)”, struggling to comprehend whether he’s worthy to wear the mask if he broke his promise to keep Gwen safe. As the Multiverse collides, elements from their world begin to condense into the MCU/SMCU “shared universe” where we can bring back other actors from these franchises such as William Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Rhys Ifans, Dane DeHaan, and the list goes on and on. By having this storyline play out, we could incorporate a sort of “swan song” which could allow both Tobey and Andrew to give it their all while finally giving fans the closure they need in order, and move on with Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man.

Overall Arc: With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility.

One of the most iconic lines in all of comic book history and arguably the most important lesson in all of the Spider-Man lore. In order for the Spider-Verse to work, this needs to be the central theme in the overarching story and be the lesson that 3 Peters teach each other and can be applied in different ways. By doing so, you can make it an original take on the iconic line.

Raimi Peter: Since in my pitch, he’s retired and doesn’t want to be Spider-Man anymore, he could be reminded of the lesson and understand that he does not need to sacrifice power over responsibility. The Peters could teach him that his power is what keeps his family and his world safe (MCU Peter) and what happens when he does not act on his power (TASM Peter_. And it could allow him to shift his perspective that by being Spider-Man and using his power due to the responsibility of protecting those around him, the meaning behind that iconic phrase is far greater than by simply just not using his power at all.

MCU Peter: He can learn the central lesson by understanding from the other two Peters that by having great power, you have a greater responsibility to protect those you love (Raimi Peter with his family) and the consequences that can come with it (TASM Peter’s inability to save Gwen).

TASM Peter: Haunted by the guilt that he could not protect the one he loved, the Peters could teach TASM Peter that he cannot allow the guilt of Gwen’s death to influence his role as Spider-Man. With great power can come great consequences and those consequences can either make us or break us. But that only he has the power to forgive himself and the responsibility to move on as Spider-Man.

Hopefully, we’ll know more about the project soon.

  • Disney to Reorganize Around Disney+, Sets Date of Virtual Investor Day

Disney to Reorganize Around Disney+, Sets Date of Virtual Investor Day

The House of Mouse has been keeping itself busy these past few days. Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced today some major structural changes, putting their main focus “on developing and producing original content for the Company’s streaming services.” Under this new structure, “the Studios Content, which will focus on creating branded theatrical and episodic content based on the Company’s powerhouse franchises for theatrical exhibition, Disney+ and the Company’s other streaming services; featuring content from “Disney Live-action & Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios, and Searchlight Pictures.”

Chapek: “Given the incredible success of Disney+ and our plans to accelerate our direct-to-consumer business, we are strategically positioning our Company to more effectively support our growth strategy and increase shareholder value. Managing content creation distinct from distribution will allow us to be more effective and nimble in making the content consumers want most, delivered in the way they prefer to consume it. Our creative teams will concentrate on what they do best–making world-class, franchise-based content–while our newly centralized global distribution team will focus on delivering and monetizing that content in the most optimal way across all platforms, including Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, and the coming Star international streaming service.”

These sort of statements leave people to wonder how Disney might operate within the next couple of months leading into 2021, since they sound to be trying to go for the “direct to consumer” approach based on Chapek’s statements.

Currently, Disney is set to discuss their “fiscal full year and fourth quarter 2020 financial results via a live audio webcast” on November 12th.

Not only that, but it’s been confirmed that Disney will hold its Investor’s Day on December 10th virtually.

This sort of news can certainly lead to lots and lots of speculation, some of which we’ve already discussed before in a previous article earlier this year:

  • ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ Ramping up Production in Prague

‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ Ramping up Production in Prague

Over the past few days, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” (2021) production moved to Prague for some more shoots and takes for the upcoming Disney+ limited series. We know that as of now, they’re still trying to complete production and we don’t know exactly how far along the team is production-wise. But a local site has been keeping us to date on all of the things the team shoot and film for the show. And most recently, it seems that they started filming some action sequences involving Sebastian’s Stan double for the show, some wires, and a sequence involving a bridge.

Now in these videos above, we can see Sebastian Stan’s double performing a sort of stunt sequence involving some wirework, along with a drone camera capturing another angle to the scene. According to the page and their sources, the production team was shooting “a chase scene close to National Theater – one of the main historic sites of Prague.” Neither Sebastian Stan nor Daniel Brühl (who plays Baron Zemo) are in Prague but sources say they will be arriving at a later date. Currently, Anthony Mackie & Wyatt Russell are already there in Prague for production. Another very important thing to note is that Adepero Oduye was seen on the premises of production. We’ve already discussed her joining the cast back in November. Her role still remains unknown, however, we’ve caught wind that the Oduye’s character will be “someone close to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.”

Another interesting tidbit from the set photos is that they were able to confirm that a part of the plot in Prague will be set in Riga, the capital city of Latvia, based on the street signs and the Latvian police cars.

Now apart from that chase sequence, there was also another production unit stationed at the Troja Bridge and “a road in the countryside where production shot a scene with armed vehicles.”

  • Theory Thursday: Doctor Strange’s Role in ‘SPIDER-MAN 3’

Theory Thursday: Doctor Strange’s Role in ‘SPIDER-MAN 3’

Just a few moments from when I started writing this post, it’s been confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch is set to appear in the upcoming “Spider-Man 3” film. Doctor Strange’s involvement in this film, for the meantime, remains unclear, though it certainly isn’t hard for one to speculate what his casting in this film means. And with the timing and direction that Marvel wants to take Phase 4 for, his involvement is certainly no mistake. So, in honor of the Superhero Theorist motto, we’re going to discuss the possibilities of the role the Master of the Mystic Arts could have in this film, starting with the main question on everyone’s mind.

    A. The Multiverse

Right now, probably the biggest question on everybody’s mind is if Spider-Man 3 is setting itself up to be a Spider-Verse film, and rightly so, this needs to be addressed. Up until a few hours ago, if you would have asked me, I would have said no. But with every news confirmation that keeps coming out, it’s becoming more and more apparent that there is a possibility we might see a Multiverse plotline play out in this film. Considering this film is set after the events of WandaVision, and that the events of the show will transcend its own boundaries and affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole, there is a massive possibility that Spider-Man may have to face the aftermath of Wanda’s “reality-altering” powers.

But how does Strange fit into all of this? Well, we know from the Marvel Studios panel last year at SDCC that the next Doctor Strange sequel in 2022 will have the Master of the Mystic Arts delve into the Multiverse of Madness, so we know that the Multiverse is the direction that Marvel Studios is aiming for. And by having Doctor Strange appear in the upcoming Spider-Man film before his own titular appearance, it’s entirely possible that Doctor Strange will attempt to help Peter in handling the conflicts that Spidey faces on the more multiverse front.

We already know that Jamie Foxx is set to return as Electro for Spider-Man 3 and that while he has confirmed he “won’t be blue in this one”, it is becoming more and more possible that Marvel is trying to incorporate the same actors to portray different iterations of the characters they were originally cast as. The perfect example of this was JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson during the post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). Simmons had already portrayed Jameson before during the Spider-Man trilogy directed by Sam Raimi, but he gave a different portrayal of the character for the MCU. It could be entirely possible that, as I mentioned in my Phase 4 theory, the lines between universes become blurred when the events of WandaVision take place, causing universes to merge into one another and introduce characters that we have never seen before in the MCU until now. From Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s own interpretations of the web-slinger, Kirsten Dunst’s “Mary Jane”, Alfred Molina’s “Doc Ock”, Williem Dafoe’s “Green Goblin” to Emma Stone’s “Gwen Stacy”,  Rhys Ifans “The Lizard”, & Dane DeHaan’s “Harry Osborn”, the Spider-Man franchise has had its fair share of web-slingers, love-interests, and villains for many years across many forms of media. So if Jamie Foxx and JK Simmons can return as Electro and J. Jonah Jameson respectively, what’s to stop other characters from possibly joining the fray?

    B. He’s the mentor figure in this Spider-Man film

Tony Stark in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Nick Fury in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

As fellow writer John Sabato mentioned in his piece earlier today, Doctor Strange “may fill the mentor role that was once filled by Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark (in Spider-Man: Homecoming), and then by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury (in Spider-Man: Far From Home). Considering the relationship these two characters have had in the comics (and their relationship off-screen in interviews), it isn’t necessarily hard to picture Doctor Strange acting as a sort of mentor (or ward as Strange would put it) and watch over Spider-Man as both Stark and Fury did in the previous films.

    C. He might cameo in the film and help move the plot forward like in “Thor: Ragnarok”.

    Thor in Thor: Ragnarok.

Now, another possibility is that he might come to Spider-Man’s aid in a similar fashion to how he aided Thor in Thor: Ragnarok. He may present himself in the form of a cameo, where he might come to Spider-Man’s help in his time of need and may require some sort of magical assistance to either face of an enemy threat or simply deal with the plot thread of his identity being revealed to the world and may require Strange to wipe everyone’s mind.

Whatever the case it may be, it’s becoming apparent that with Doctor Strange being involved in this film, things are about to get more mystic and weird in ways that we can’t possibly imagine. Who knows? We might be one step closer to seeing this become a reality one day.

  • Phase 4: Reality Checked

    Phase 4: Reality Checked

From director picks, casting confirmations for Electro, Kang the Conqueror, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel to release date postponements, and WandaVision trailers, Marvel Studios has certainly been its most active since the pandemic arose back in early 2020. And while we won’t have any theatrical releases from Marvel until May 2021 with Black Widow, Phase 4 is definitely set to kick off in late 2020 with the premiere of WandaVision on Disney+, with evidence suggesting it might come out this November.

Now, since the announcement of Phase Four back in SDCC 2019, I was particularly intrigued by two projects in that lineup: WandaVision (2020) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).

    Wanda Maximoff and Doctor Strange.

We know from the Marvel Studios panel last year at SDCC that the events of WandaVision are going to tie directly into the Multiverse of Madness and based on what we know from the plot synopses of these projects (& the LITERAL title of the Doctor Strange sequel):

PHASE 4 WILL delve into the multiverse

    Kevin Feige at SDCC 2019.

To quote Kevin Feige: “Just because Quentin Beck makes up lies about the multiverse, doesn’t mean it isn’t real.” When Feige announced these two projects and said they would tie directly with each other, the first thing that immediately came to mind was House of M, a comic book event where Scarlet Witch managed to alter the reality in the comics, something that has already been teased to occur during the WandaVision Disney+ show. What makes this show so important is that the events in which the show is based on affected not only Wanda and Vision but pretty much the entire 616 comic universe as a whole. So, we can predict that the events of WandaVision  will transcend the boundaries of the show and affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.

HOW DOES THE MULTIVERSE ACTUALLY WORK IN THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE?

We know that based on Professor Hulk’s and the Ancient One’s descriptions of how the flow of time works that whenever someone from the future alters the events of the past, they don’t necessarily affect the events of that timeline, but rather create another timeline based on the alteration of those chain of events, essentially creating a brand new universe. An example of this will be shown in the upcoming Disney+ show; Loki (2021), where we’ll see Loki, presumably in an alternate timeline (and therefore an alternate universe) with the Tesseract following the events of the “The Avengers” (2012).

BUT WHAT HAPPENS IF REALITY BREAKS?

In the multiverse theory, each separate universe exists in a different plane of existence from another universe, meaning all of these alternate universes exist, but they are separate from each other. But let’s say that the events of one universe are so powerful, that they can alter the fabric of space-time, to the point where the spaces between universe begin to blur and those alternate universes begin to converge onto one another. That would mean that theoretically if Wanda Maximoff is indeed the catalyst that will break reality by the series finale of WandaVision, then Wanda could be so powerful that not only could she tear a rift in her universe, but create a rift in reality itself, which could allow the merging of other universes into our own. And the results of these rifts could bring about so many exciting possibilities to the MCU. For example:

we could see some old faces:

We already know from our very own Charles Murphy that Evan Peters will be joining the ranks of the MCU for WandaVision in a secret role. Now, he could be playing a number of different things. He could be playing a brand new villain, or just another character entirely. However, there is the possibility that he could portray a new version of Wanda’s brother, Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver, last seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), portrayed by Aaron Taylor Johnson. This is a popular theory amongst fans because Peters has already portrayed Quicksilver in the “X-Men Fox Universe.” And while I don’t think it will be the exact same character from that specific universe, it could be a sort of “soft reboot” where a character is portrayed by the same actor, but the actor gives a completely different portrayal from the previous iteration. An example of this was JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson during the post credit scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). Simmons had already portrayed Jameson before during the Spider-Man trilogy directed by Sam Raimi, but he gave a different portrayal of the character for the MCU. The same could be said for Jamie Foxx’s ‘Electro’ who portrayed the villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) and will now be returning as the character in Spider-Man 3 (2021). I also discussed the possibility of Morbius (2021) being the film that could connect the SMCU to MCU in my San Quentin Prison Theory. And lastly, we could see the incoporation of characters that have already existed in alternate universe and portray those very same iterations within the MCU. And while there a number of rumored characters out there that could potentially reprise their roles for a spectacular event, the best example I could think of his Ryan Reynolds’ “Deadpool”, a character that has been known to break the 4th wall from time to time.

we could see some new ones too:

In a Multiverse, anything is possible. We could see the introduction of characters like America Chavez, who’s comic origins are deeply rooted in the concepts of the Multiverse. And since we know that the multiverse bases itself on the premise of time-travel, we could possibly see the introduction of a character known for his time-travel shenanigans, Kang the Conqueror.

CONCLUSION: THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE IS ABOUT TO GET A WHOLE LOT BIGGER

With the concept of the Multiverse finally being explored in the MCU, chances are we might have to change its name from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. Without a doubt, the idea of the concept being introduced to these franchises is something that should excite fans because we might finally be able to see stories that have never could have been possible to bring to the big screen before now, like an MCU adaptation of the Marvel Comics event, Secret Wars. Or who knows? Maybe if the universes align, we might get to see a live-action Spider-Verse film play out. With the multiverse, anything is possible.

Sasha Lane Interview Seemingly Confirms Role in ‘LOKI’

Early this year, stuntwoman Kelly Bellini was listed on IMDb as actress Sasha Lane’s stunt double for episode 2 of the Loki series. Unfortunately, IMDb is sometimes not the most reliable source of information, and Sasha had not actually been confirmed as being in the show as of many months later. Now a new interview with Sasha Lane with GoldenGlobes.com about her other series Utopia, has seemingly confirmed the IMDb listing.

Lane made her film debut in the award-winning movie, American Honey (2016), starring opposite Shia LaBeouf and Riley Keough, after being spotted on a Miami beach by the film’s director, Andrea Arnold. She followed up with roles in Hearts Beat Loud, opposite Nick Offerman, and The Miseducation of Cameron PostHellboy, and will next appear in the superhero series, Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston

While there has been a few articles previously speculating Lane was in the Loki series, largely coming from that IMDb listing, it hadn’t really been confirmed; assuming Golden Globes wasn’t working off of that same listing, it looks like Lane’s presence in the series may have been confirmed.

  • ‘MORBIUS’: The San Quentin Prison Theory

‘MORBIUS’: The San Quentin Prison Theory

This theory is something that’s been in development since January of this year, and it has taken lots of forms over the past few months, but this is the most updated version to date. One of the running jokes in the community is that Sony somehow tends to spoil some of the most important scenes or take shots from the ending of their films and place them in the trailers, making it easy for fans to be able to piece together a film’s plot based on a few trailers. (I.E. TASM2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Far From Home, Venom) . The same could be said for the Morbius teaser trailer, which dropped in January of this year (I know right? It feels ages ago). Something that caught the attention of everyone who saw it was that surprise cameo by none other than Michael Keaton at the end of the trailer. But with this surprise, came many multiple reactions.

    tmp_8XnsTX_d1964462893cef35_fans-react-to-michael-keaton-in-morbius-trailerMichael Keaton in Morbius (2021).

Some saw this cameo as a possible “power move” by Sony in order to draw in audiences to a movie about a character that not many people have general knowledge about. However, many fans saw this as a possible connection Morbius may have to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, by acknowledging that the events of Moebius occur within the . & while I agree that this film may establish a “partial connection” to the MCU, I believe this to be the smaller picture. There certainly is a bigger picture being painted here when it comes to this film. And when I mean big, I mean State-Wide Prison big.

    dreamstime_xxl_138122528San Quentin Penitentiary

Welcome to “San Quentin State Prison”. A maximum-security correctional facility for and home to some of the most notorious inmates in all the US. The name sounds familiar no? That’s because it was seen most recently to be holding one of the most dangerous killers and villains in the entirety of Marvel Comics, Cletus Kasady a.k.a. Carnage, back in 2018 during the Venom post-credit scene. It was also seen in the first Ant-Man film, back in 2015 when Scott Lang was released from prison.

Now, you might be asking yourself how or why this prison is important not only for this film but for the context of the MCU and the SUMC as a whole. Well, it’s quite simple. I believe that Cletus Kasady, Adrian Toomes, Mac Gargan, (and coming soon), Michael Morbius will all be in the same prison by the time Morbius drops in March of next year and that by doing so, it will be the point in where the MCU and the SUMC will converge and acknowledge both of their universes as one and the same.

    SAN QUETIN

    POINT #1: THE UNIFORMS

The police officers that were seen in the Spider-Man: Homecoming post-credit scene and Venom post-credit scene are wearing the same patch on their uniforms on their right sides. (Spot the first two images). Another thing to point out is that when we see Adrian Toomes in the Morbius trailer, he was still wearing his prison outfit from Spider-Man: Homecoming, the same white uniforms on Gargan and Kasady. Most prison systems use different colored jumpsuits for the different categories based on the crime you are in. White signifies “segregation unit or in specific cases, death row inmates.” And who better than supervillains to take up that mantle. But perhaps that may all be a coincidence no? Well, let’s dig a little deeper.

    POINT #2: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

    636340688713223490-DF-02341Liz Allan Toomes in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

The last time we saw Liz Allan Toomes in the MCU was at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, where following the final battle between Spider-Man and Vulture, she revealed she was moving to Oregon with her mother to avoid seeing her father’s trial. Now, in the Spider-Man: Homecoming post-credit scene, Toomes’ family comes to the prison where he is being kept in to visit him. Now let’s think about the logistics of this for a minute. Oregon is on the west coast of the US, and if the prison was in New York where they originally lived, Liz and her mother would have to go cross country every time they wanted to visit her father in prison. Now, personally, I don’t find this to be feasible/smart in any way. They must have moved to the west coast for a reason. So if we take into consideration those factors, if Adrian was sent to San Quentin State Prison in California, and Oregon is the state directly above it, one can assume that they moved to the west coast in order to be able to visit Adrian while he was in prison. Something else we know is that the prison is by the sea.  This shot of 6 seagulls from the Spider-Man: Homecoming post-credit scene and the sounds of waves crashing indicate that wherever Adrian is, they’re in a prison by the sea. And it just so happens that San Quentin State Prison fits that MO.

    CONCLUSION: PRISON RIOT

Something we need to keep in mind is that during the trailer, we see Morbius walking by a Spider-Man poster in an orange prison jumpsuit. This detail is important because it means that he was recently incarcerated and somehow managed to escape. Not only that, but we also see Adrian in front of police lights when we see him in the trailer. Taking into consideration all of these factors, I have reason to believe that we’ll see a prison riot/jailbreak moment take place during Morbius. And it would actually serve as a very good plot point not just for this film, but for the future projects to come. By establishing a prison riot/jailbreak moment in Morbius, not only does it provide an escape for Michael Morbius so that the plot of that film can continue, but it can also potentially set up the future Spider-Man films and the upcoming Venom: Let there be Carnage sequel, by allowing Toomes, Gargan and Kasady to all escape from the same prison at the same time. Not only that, but they’d also be pay homage to Kasady’s ‘Carnage’ origin story, where a riot takes place in the prison where Kasady was kept and he managed to escape the prison whilst the riot took place. So if this chain of events happens to become true by the time Morbius rolls around in 2021, I think we can say this is going to cause a world of trouble for our “Friendly-Neighborhood”.
