Diane Ademu-John Boards HBO Max’s ‘DUNE’ Spin-Off Series As Showrunner

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune just got its second trailer, and the franchise is already expanding. Diane Ademu-John has officially boarded the film’s spin-off series, Dune: The Sisterhood, as its new showrunner. The HBO Max series will explore the universe established in Dune through the eyes of the mysterious Bene Gesserit. The Jedi-like organization of women has achieved a mastery over mind and body, which allows them to meddle in the political landscape of their universe.

The series will serve as a prequel to Villeneuve’s project, with its story ultimately leading to the famous events on the desert planet Arrakis. Dune: The Sisterhood originally got announced in 2019, but not much has been said about the show since original showrunner Jon Spaihts stepped down in November of that year. The announcement of Ademu-John’s involvement is good news for those who were worried about the series’ future. The project’s newest helmer has a long history working in television, having written for shows like The Haunting of Bly ManorEmpireThe Originals, and The Vampire Diaries.

The show’s pilot will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, and will most likely be made sometime between Dune and its intended sequel. The sprawling franchise has a lot of content to work with, as series creator Frank Herbert wrote a total of six Dune novels in his lifetime. The Star-studded initial film was going to drop last year. Due to COVID-related delays, it will now release on October 22 in theaters and on HBO Max.

  • Kevin Smith Talks Scrapped ‘Howard the Duck’ Plans and Hints at Werewolf By Night’s Marvel Studios Future

Kevin Smith Talks Scrapped ‘Howard the Duck’ Plans and Hints at Werewolf By Night’s Marvel Studios Future

Way back in early 2019, Hulu announced it would be producing an animated Howard the Duck series from famously nerdy filmmaker Kevin Smith. The project was ultimately scrapped, with very little information revealed before its downfall. Luckily for us, Smith finally opened up about the unmade show on the latest episode of his podcast, Fatman Beyond. In a quick rant, he revealed what the basic plot of the series would have been:

The idea of our story was that Howard was trapped here and he was trying to get pages of the Darkhold, which would allow him to go back.

The Darkhold, for those that don’t remember, is the same evil book of magic that was featured in the fourth season of Agents of SHIELD and the end of WandaVision. It seems much of the planned adult comedy would have been rooted in mysticism, as Smith also specified he wanted to use an obscure horror character that Marvel Studios already had plans for:

I reached out to Walter Flanagan from Comic Book Men and told him I’m gonna take a stab at all the f–king 70s characters. Walt was giving suggestions and Werewolf By Night was absolutely on the list…then I go into Jeph [Loeb] and told him what I wanted to do, and that’s when they said ‘You can’t use Werewolf by Night,’ and I asked why. They said the movie division was using him.

Essentially Marvel’s version of the Wolfman, Werewolf By Night has been rumored to have a role in Moon Knight for some time. After all, the two characters possess a long history as both friends and enemies. Marvel Studios hasn’t confirmed a Werewolf appearance just yet, but Smith’s comments should give fans of the character hope.

  • RUMOR: Sung Kang Will Play ‘STAR WARS: REBELS’ Character in ‘OBI-WAN KENOBI’

RUMOR: Sung Kang Will Play ‘STAR WARS: REBELS’ Character in ‘OBI-WAN KENOBI’

It’s possible we have our first information on Sung Kang’s mysterious Obi-Wan Kenobi role. A new report from Jordan Maison and the folks at Cinelinx are claiming that Kang will portray one of the Empire’s Inquisitors in the Disney+ series. More specifically, he is said to be the Fifth Brother, an antagonist we saw frequently in the second season of Dave Filoni’s animated Star Wars Rebels.

In that show, the Fifth Brother was voiced by Philip Anthony-Rodriguez, and worked closely with Sarah Michelle Geller’s Seventh Sister to track down the Force-sensitive Ezra Bridger and his master Kanan Jarrus. The Fifth Brother ultimately met his end at the hands of the former Sith Lord, Maul.

In the Star Wars universe, the Inquisitors are a group of Dark Side Force users who work for Darth Vader and the Empire. They spend much of the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope hunting down Force-sensitive individuals in an effort to kill or turn them. Maison claims that they won’t be the only Rebels characters who appear in Kenobi, but the scooper did not clarify who else might make an appearance.

Sung Kang is best known for his role as the fan favorite character Han Lue in the Fast and the Furious franchise. In recent years, he has also appeared in films like Raya and the Last Dragon and We Can Be Heroes. On television, he had a starring role in three seasons of the popular Starz series Power.

  • RUMOR: Vivian Lyra Blair Cast As Princess Leia in ‘OBI-WAN KENOBI’

RUMOR: Vivian Lyra Blair Cast As Princess Leia in ‘OBI-WAN KENOBI’

She may only be a child, but to us, she’s royalty. Rumor has it Princess Leia Organa will be making a return to live-action in next year’s Kenobi series. The news comes from Jordan Maison at Cinelinx, who claims actress Vivian Lyra Blair has been cast as a younger version of the iconic character for the upcoming Disney+ project.

The same report reveals that Leia will be a major part of Kenobi’s story, with Maison describing her role as the “impetus” of the whole show. If the rumor is true, it seems the young Princess will be the reason Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi dives into a new adventure.

Blair is perhaps best known for her work in 2018’s surprise hit Bird Box, and also had a role in Robert Rodriguez’s Sharkboy & Lavagirl spin-off We Can Be Heroes. Princess Leia is one of the founding characters of the Star Wars franchise. She was originally brought to life by Carrie Fisher, who famously portrayed the character in six films over the course of forty years. The rebellious dignitary also had a cameo appearance in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with Norwegian actress Ingvild Deila standing in as a body double for Fisher.

Other than this cameo, not much of the character’s life before A New Hope has been explored. Leia appeared briefly in Dave Filoni’s Star Wars Rebels, working against the Empire on her adoptive father’s orders. She may be a little too young to be participating in missions in Kenobi, so it will be interesting to see what shenanigans could end up getting Obi-Wan out of exile on Tatooine.

  • Antonio Banderas Joins “INDIANA JONES 5”

Antonio Banderas Joins “INDIANA JONES 5”

The cast of Indiana Jones 5 continues to impress. Deadline has revealed that Antonio Banderas has been added to the ranks of the upcoming adventure sequel. It is unknown who Banderas will be portraying, but he joins a cast that already includes the star power of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Reneé Wilson, and Harrison Ford returning as the iconic titular character. He barely requires any introduction, but for the uninitiated, Banderas is best known for his starring roles in the Zorro franchise, Robert Rodriguez’s Mexico Trilogy, Interview with the Vampire, and the Spy Kids films, among others. This will be the second action-adventure project to include Banderas in the next couple of years, as the actor also plays a role in Tom Holland’s Uncharted film adaptation.

Indiana Jones 5 is set to debut in July of 2022, with James Mangold taking over directing duties from franchise creator Steven Spielberg. The script for the installment comes from Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and Mangold himself. Filming for the project is currently on hold, as Ford recovers from an injury sustained while performing an action scene. The new Jones film has been in various stages of production for over ten years, with Spielberg attempting to make a new movie on and off since 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Very little is known about the plot of the film, but rumors suggest it will take place during the 1960’s Space Race, and we should get more details sooner rather than later.

  • ‘Black Widow’: Exploring the Future of the MCU’s New Players

‘Black Widow’: Exploring the Future of the MCU’s New Players

To many viewers’ surprise, nobody died in Black Widow. At least, no one good. With the events of the blockbuster film billed as an official goodbye to Natasha Romanoff, it seemed possible that the project may be written as a stand-alone feature. As such, many justly assumed the grand majority of Black Widow-centric characters would end up as one-hit wonders. Nevertheless, the film’s release last week revealed that, aside from the dastardly Dreykov and his Red Room, not a single other major player met their end before the credits rolled.

With surprisingly enjoyable characters like David Harbour‘s Red Guardian still on the active roster, we are likely to see all of them again in some capacity. Especially with Marvel Studios’ recent penchant for bringing back characters we thought they forgot about. Of course, this begs the question of when and where Black Widow‘s supporting staff will make another appearance. We already know where we’ll see Florence Pugh‘s Yelena Belova next, but the answer isn’t as obvious for some of the others:

    Red Guardian

One of the standout introductions, David Harbour‘s Alexei Shostokoff, is undeniably fun to watch. The Russian Super-Soldier known as Red Guardian spent most of Black Widow‘s story trying to prove his might and prove to his girls he that loves them dearly. While he never truly reformed his criminal tendencies, he did manage to survive the destruction of the Red Room with a little more heart than he helped build it with. So, where do we see him pop up next?

The obvious answer may be Anthony Mackie‘s Captain America 4, where he could finally go toe-to-toe with his American counterpart. Alternatively, we could see the battle-hungry Shostokoff as a member of the Mandarin’s underground tournament in Shang-Chi. Although in my mind, there could be a more creative solution to this conundrum.

Red Guardian: What We Know About David Harbour's Black Widow Character From The Comics - CINEMABLEND

An emotional moment between Alexei and Yelena in the film included a cheeky Marvel reference, where Yelena accidentally refers to Alexei as another comic book villain, the Crimson Dynamo. He is a Russian version of Iron Man and already was adapted to the MCU in Iron Man 2 as an amalgamation with Whiplash. His inclusion there doesn’t mean he can’t play still play a role in the future.

Armor Wars traditionally features Dynamo in some role or another. It seems the MCU’s best path to making this a reality is giving Alexei a set of armor in their upcoming adaptation. The glory hog could easily use some stolen Stark tech to enhance his abilities and perhaps even take the new name as a tribute to Nat and Yelena.

    Taskmaster

Here’s your last spoiler warning if you want to avoid the biggest twist in the film.

Taskmaster’s top-secret identity turned out to be Antonia Dreykov, played by Olga Kurylenko, the brainwashed daughter of the Red Room’s founder. The involuntary antagonist has been the subject of much debate, mostly centering on her comic book inaccuracy. In the comics, Taskmaster is a man named Tony Masters, who acts as a willing mercenary and combat instructor. The dissimilarity between the two characters seems massive, but it may actually be easy for the MCU to bridge the gap.

When we last see Antonia, she’s been freed from her father’s control and joins the rest of the Black Widows in escaping from federal custody. On the run, with a surname as dangerous as “Dreykov,” the mnemonic assassin would probably want to go by a different moniker. A shortening of Antonia leads to “Toni,” while a clever play on her codename could potentially lead to a fake surname like Masters.

With a new identity and the chance to express herself, Toni could use her skills to survive as a mercenary. Or perhaps, in an attempt to repossess her past, she could revise the concept of the Red Room and open an academy that better suits her objectives. This twist would probably be a concept best explored in a Black Widow sequel, but I wouldn’t rule out the character returning in a project related to whatever the Contessa has planned up her mysterious sleeve.

    Melina Vostokoff & Rick Mason

The future of Rachel Weisz‘s Melina Vostokoff is a little harder to pin down than the others. Her emotional attachment to Alexei means the pair are likely to appear as a unit. So, I would expect the character to appear in Armor Wars, receiving a comic-accurate “Iron Maiden” get-up. She could also be the potential candidate for the aforementioned Dark Avengers project down the line. As for professional finder Rick Mason, his history as a SHIELD agent makes him a suitable match for Secret Invasion, either as a newfound member of Monica Rambeau’s S.W.O.R.D. organization or an old ally of Nick Fury called in to help. Who knows, maybe he was a Skrull all along?

  • ‘Loki’: Chris Hemsworth Recorded Throg’s Grunts

‘Loki’: Chris Hemsworth Recorded Throg’s Grunts

It looks like Chris Hemsworth ended up playing a role in Loki after all, just not the one any of us expected. In a recent interview with the podcast Views from the 616, the series head writer Kate Herron revealed that the Australian actor did, in fact, return to record lines as Throg, the Frog of Thunder. Well, he made grunts to be exact.

The amphibious Norse God made a surprise cameo appearance during the latest episode of Marvel’s new Disney+ series. He was quickly shown as an inhabitant of the otherworldly Void, desperately trying to escape a glass jar buried beneath the dirt. Herron confirmed on the podcast that Hemsworth actively participated in the show, and old audio was not used for the bit as some may have assumed.

Throg made his first comic appearance in Thor Vol. 1 #364 back in 1986. A new version got introduced in 2009’s Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers #1. He originated as a man named Simon Walterson, who found himself cursed to live life as a frog after an encounter with a witch. A wild story follows this, but it ends with Walterson wielding a version of Mjolnir that transforms him into Throg, an amphibian with the powers of Thor.

The character has since been a favorite joke among Marvel fans, so it was nice to see him appear in the show alongside another comical Easter egg, the Thanos Copter. Loki producer Eric Martin recently confirmed the character, presented as a Thor variant on the show, was originally meant for a larger role. Perhaps this means there’s still a chance we’ll one day see Hemsworth give the role some life on a larger stage.

  • Pitching a Black Suit Trilogy After ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Pitching a Black Suit Trilogy After ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Believe it or not, it’s already been six years since Tom Holland was cast as the MCU’s version of Peter Parker. The actor has since appeared in five films with the final installment of his trilogy set to drop in December of this year. While the series capper, No Way Home, promises to be a jam-packed delight for fans of the iconic character, it does come packaged with a loaded question: what happens to Spider-Man once it’s over? Holland seems to be far from done playing the role. The occurrence of more films, set during Peter’s college years, has been theorized by fans for ages. Marvel boss Kevin Feige once used the Harry Potter franchise as a reference for the MCU’s take on Spidey. So, a collection of sequels with a darker tone doesn’t feel like it’s completely off the table.

Luckily for Marvel, there actually happens to be a famous plot device in the Spidey mythos that could do wonders for shifting the character in that mature direction. That’s right, I’m talking about a certain famed alien symbiote. Venom bonding with Holland‘s Peter is something fans have wanted to see for a long time, but unfortunately, the two entities currently exist in separate cinematic universes. Luckily, Loki and the What If series are teasing a colliding multiverse. As such, there is a perfect opportunity to tell a “Black Suit Trilogy” inside of a bigger picture that includes three different franchises. The story would start with:

    Avengers: Secret Wars

The creatives at Marvel Studios have been alluding to an adaptation of the classic event series Secret Wars for years now. Loki creator Michael Waldron even gave Murphy’s Multiverse a cheeky “We’ll see,” when asked about the concept during a recent interview. That storyline has had a few iterations, but the multiversal trajectory of Phase Four indicates the MCU may go with a project inspired by Jonathan Hickman‘s 2015 series. That story dealt with the fallout of multiple Marvel universes colliding with each other and becoming a single continuity.

This is something that could translate well on screen, with an array of live-action Marvel franchises already in existence. If this movie were to come to fruition, there is a chance that Tom Hardy‘s Venom may find his way into the Sacred Timeline. The event would be a great way to bring Venom and Spider-Man into the same universe. Holland‘s Parker finally getting the symbiote in Battleworld would be a wonderful homage to the original 1984 Secret Wars comic. It would act as his first step into his new life.

Spider-Man: Identity Crisis (or Last Hunt)

Before a live-action Spider-Verse was on the table, it appeared the third MCU Spider-Man film would focus on the consequences of Peter’s identity being publicly revealed. Michael Mando felt poised to don a Scorpion suit, and there was heavy speculation Marvel’s ultimate hunter Kraven would come to NYC to find new prey. Despite not ending up this way, that plot would still make for a pretty good movie. Should the story of Peter’s unmasking not be concluded in No Way Home, it wouldn’t be hard to shift this concept to a fourth film.

If Secret Wars were to bring all the cinematic universes together, we would already have an established Kraven ready to go. Throw in the idea that Peter’s family and friends would also have targets painted on their backs, you’ll have a pretty good amount of physical and emotional threats to test Peter’s morals while influenced by the Venom symbiote. Just imagine the story of J.M. DeMatteis‘ Kraven’s Last Hunt combining with J. Michael Straczynski‘s Back In Black

    Venom: Separation Anxiety

If Let There Be Carnage does as well as the first Venom flick, you know there’ll be another sequel. After going through his origin story and duking it out with a redheaded Woody Harrelson, what’s left for a symbiote to do? It’s logical to assume the third movie is where we’ll finally see Holland‘s Spider-Man confront Hardy‘s Venom. If Peter has the symbiote, Eddie Brock is going to want it back.

The project could even take inspiration from the mid-90’s Separation Anxiety storyline, in which a Venom-less Eddie finds himself up against a horde of spawns created by the Life Foundation. If Peter were wearing the black suit in a world of rampaging symbiotes, it stands to reason he’d be attracted to the carnage. Once he meets back up with Eddie? Game, set, match.

  • Gabriel Luna Shares First ‘The Last Of Us’ Set Photo as Production Begins

Gabriel Luna Shares First ‘The Last Of Us’ Set Photo as Production Begins

It’s a time to celebrate for The Last of Us fans, as cameras have finally begun rolling on HBO’s upcoming live-action adaptation. The news was shared by actor Gabriel Luna, who is set to portray Pedro Pascal’s brother Tommy Miller in the series. Along with the announcement came an image of Luna, Pascal, and Nico Parker sitting together in a car. The placement of the actors, mixed with the knowledge of who they’re playing, indicates the show will directly adapt the opening sequence of the original game. In the now-famous scene, protagonist Joel, Tommy, and Joel’s daughter Sarah desperately try to escape the chaos of the infection’s initial outbreak. Fans of the franchise know how that sequence ends, and new viewers should be excited to find out.

The series pilot is currently being directed by Kantemir Balagov, a Russian filmmaker best known for his work on the historical drama Beanpole. The only other known cast members are Merle Dandridge, who is set to reprise her role from the original game as Firefly leader Marlene, and Bella Ramsey, the Game of Thrones star who will take up the iconic role of Ellie. Franchise creator Neil Druckmann helped to bring this adaptation to life, alongside HBO veteran and former Chernobyl showrunner Craig Mazin. Also back from the video game series is composer Gustavo Santaolalla, who will also take charge of the show’s music. There is no current release date for the series, but now that it has officially begun production, fans should expect more information on that sooner than later.
