Misha Green Offers Updates on ‘Black Canary’ and Teases Comic Accurate Costume

Over a year ago, Birds of Prey and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn hit theaters worldwide. The film brought back Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn alongside some new additions to the DCEU. The most popular introduction was Jurnee Smollet as Black Canary, who fans immediately championed to get a spinoff. It took quite some time, but it finally got announced that she’ll reprise the role of Dinah Lance for a solo project. Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green set to write the film as an HBO Max exclusive.

Writer Misha Green recently took to Twitter for an impromptu Q&A and fans immediately jumped at the chance to get a bit more details on the upcoming Black Canary film. She naturally doesn’t give away any details but did offer some small glimpses behind the scenes. What may have caught many fans’ eyes is her teasing the classic costume from the comics. So, it adds some hope that she’ll wear the iconic biker jacket and fishnets.

She is currently actively researching for the project but doesn’t give away what might become the series’ main influence, but there was a hint at Gail Simone‘s work. The writer remains tight-lipped on what the series might dive into, but she did confirm that she’s going solo on this project in one of her tweets.

We got a tease that Dinah’s mother had a similar ability in the 2020 film, which could become an important part of the upcoming HBO Max film. While it is still probably some time until it releases, it’s exciting to see such passion behind the project. Smollet has also been very vocal about her love for the character and project. So, here’s hoping we’ll get to see their creative vision soon.

  • ‘Fortnite’: First Look at ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Inspired Tom Hardy Skin Leaks Online

‘Fortnite’: First Look at ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Inspired Tom Hardy Skin Leaks Online

The latest season of Fortnite kicked off the event with a brand new Carnage skin. Well, it looks like Sony and Marvel have one more skin inspired by Venom: Let There Be Carnage, as Twitter user @HYPEX shared a leaked image featuring a brand new Venom skin. Not only does it showcase the design from the films, but it seems the base version is a Tom Hardy-inspired skin for players to run around with. It’s not the first actor look-a-like that joined the project, as they’ve also recently added a Will Smith-inspired skin from Bad Boys.

The game has truly become a way for brands to promote various projects. Marvel’s Avengers game has also been pushing Marvel Cinematic Universe-inspired skins that showcase how intertwined their projects are at this stage. Fortnite has the advantage of not only being a multiplayer experience but also includes special events. In the past, they had collaborative events like an alien invasion or even an Ariana Grande digital concert. Who knows if we’ll get a future that has film events integrated into these unique experiences, as it continues to grow and combine countless brands.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘Daredevil’s Marc Jobst to Direct Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Pilot Episode

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Daredevil’s Marc Jobst to Direct Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Pilot Episode

Eiichiro Oda‘s One Piece has recently passed the 1,000 chapter mark and has been going strong since 1997. The journey of a young and ambitious pirate named Monkey D. Luffy spirals into an adventure unlike any other. With the end of its current Wano arc on the horizon, Netflix is trying its hand at bringing this iconic franchise to the west as a live-action adaptation. It’s been quiet since it first was announced in 2017 but picked up some pace a few months ago with the first look at their One Piece logo.

The Critical Order: One Piece: Unlimited Retrospective - East Blue Pt. 2

There are still some questions on the upcoming production and who might bring this series to life. Early on, Steven Madea joined as showrunner alongside Luke Cage writer Matt Owens. We can now exclusively confirm that the series’ pilot episode also has found its director in Daredevil and Black Sails‘ Marc Jobst. He and Owens have some shared history, as the director also worked on the Luke Cage episode from season two titled “Wig Out,” which Owens wrote. His experience with Black Sails, a Starz series that explored the golden age of piracy, is also a great plus. He may have hinted at his involvement back in March in a Q&A with Newcastle University.

The project is currently working under the title “Project Panda,” which seemingly has changed at one point in pre-production as it was teased as “Project Roger” in May. It’s a fun reference to Oda‘s joke character Pandaman that he hides as an easter egg throughout the manga. Production was eyeing an August production start in Cape Town last year but got delayed due to the pandemic. The first season will explore the East Blue saga in ten episodes, as Luffy recruits the first members of the Straw Hat pirates before he sets out into the Grand Line.

  • HBO Max Developing a Three-Part Documentary on DC’s Legacy

HBO Max Developing a Three-Part Documentary on DC’s Legacy

It looks like HBO Max will be putting the spotlight on DC Comics’ rich history and influential legacy as part of a three-part documentary series. Oscar and Emmy-nominated director, and producer, Leslie Iwerks, will act as showrunner alongside Greg Berlanti. It’ll explore the early years of the company and how it evolved into the comic book giant we know today.

HBO Max is no stranger to DC, as the streaming service already features a number of titles including Doom Patrol, Titans, and the upcoming Peacemaker series. All that is in additional to working closely with Warner Bros. films. With comics assets as popular as they have become, it makes sense that DC would want to celebrate its successes and relive some of the world’s most beloved characters and stories. Jim Lee, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer at DC told Deadline:

DC has a rich legacy of over 80 years of iconic storytelling: from the introduction of the genre defining Super Hero Superman in 1938 to the amazing movies, TV shows, cartoons, games and comics which have been synonymous with superheroism for generations thereafter. We are so excited to dive into this history and bring fans along this amazing journey,

    Jim Lee

Iwerks previously received an Outstanding Nonfiction Special Emmy nomination for her work on The Pixar Story, a documentary that took audiences behind the scenes of the the animation legend. She will exeuctive produce with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Co-executive producers are Mark Catalena, Rachael Jerahian, and Jonathan Gabay. The series will be co-directed by Iwerks alongside Catalena.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Netflix’s THREE-BODY PROBLEM Looking to Fill Out its Cast

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix’s THREE-BODY PROBLEM Looking to Fill Out its Cast

Last September, it was announced that Game of Thrones showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, were developing an adaption of The Three-Body Problem for Netflix. The adaption was the first project announced by the duo under their new overall mega deal with Netflix. Since the news first hit, details regarding the series adaption have been rather sparse. We know that Derek Tsang (Better Days) will direct the drama, and actress Eiza Gonzalez will lead the series. Details beyond those, though, have been slim… until today.

    • We here at Murphy’s Multiverse have a small bit of news we can share, though, with fans of Liu Cixin’s sci-fi book trilogy The Three-Body Problem. The Netflix series is currently looking to cast to cast unspecified roles.
    • The first role calls for a Female Lead between the ages of 25-35. This actor will need to be of Chinese heritage, a scientist and a fluent English speaker. It’s a lead role with options. Should the series stay close to the book and, assuming Eiza isn’t portraying a different version of the character, this could perhaps be for the role of Ye Wenjie. (This, of course, is merely a guess!)
    • The second role calls for a Female Lead between the ages of 70-85. This actor will need to be of Chinese heritage, a scientist and a fluent English speaker. This is also for a lead role with options.
    • The third role is for a Female Lead between the ages of 25-35. The actor will need to be of Hispanic/Latino heritage and speak English fluently. The character is described as a scientist and the role is a lead role with options.
    • The fourth role is for Male Lead between the ages of 25-35. The actor will need to be of Indian/South Asian heritage and British. The character is said to be powerful, charismatic and clever. This is for a lead role with options.
    • The fifth role is for a Male Lead between the ages of 25-35. The casting grid calls specifically for a Black actor. The character is described as a scientist, who isn’t necessarily a nerd, who is smart and laid back. He’s also said to have leading man charisma, who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances.
    • The final two roles being cast are for Male Leads, both between the ages of 50-70. These are only described as Military/Ex- Military.

The Three-Body Problem is based on the book series by . The series includes Remembrance of Earth’s Past, The Dark Forest and Death’s End.

Production on The Three-Body Problem is expected to kick off in November in the UK.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Lucasfilm Interested In More Non-Canon ‘STAR WARS’ Content

EXCLUSIVE: Lucasfilm Interested In More Non-Canon ‘STAR WARS’ Content

Canon can be intimidating at times and a 40-year old franchise like Star Wars definitely fits that bill. With dozens of canonical comics published a year, multiple shows, and games within the canon in production, it’s no wonder the non-canon Star Wars: Visions feels like a nice reprieve.

I spoke with Lucasfilm VP for Franchise Story James Waugh on whether the company has an interest in producing more non-canon content like Visions to which he said:

It’s something we are interested in. The reason we approached Visions as it was is we wanted to empower specific creators within their process and medium. So much of the stuff you see in Visions… the specificity of anime as a medium justifies a lot of the storytelling. So do I think we could do more none-timeline storytelling? I think under the Visions framework, absolutely. There is a certain joy in having celebratory content that is removed from the gravitas of the canon. We’ll have to see what the fandom wants.

Judging from the critical and fan response, the verdict for Star Wars: Visions overall has been immensely positive. One of the best things about the show is its accessibility. You need only to have seen A New Hope to get the gist of what the show is all about. Here’s to hoping we get more shows like it.

  • Joshua Collins Cast in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’

Joshua Collins Cast in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’

Details about Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania are still scarce ahead of its February 17, 2023 release date. Filming began in early 2021 and is expected to continue into 2022, but we may have learned another kernel of information about the cast.

According to his Spotlight profile, actor Joshua Collins is set to play a character named “Derrick” in the film. Collins is a British-American actor known for roles in movies What’s Love Got To Do With It (2021) and Against the Law (2016) among others.

Collins’ role as Derrick is presumably small, but time with tell how he will stack up next to Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, and Johnathon Majors whose Kang the Conquerer is set to make his film debut in Quantumania.

  • Netflix Announces ‘Tiger King 2’ With a 2021 Release

Netflix Announces ‘Tiger King 2’ With a 2021 Release

It looks like the world hasn’t had enough of Tiger King, as Netflix has announced that sequel to the original 2020 documentary. The real-life story of a man known as Joe Exotic and the bizarre happenings surrounding his time as the owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park (or G.W. Zoo for short). The documentary is eyeing a late 2021 release. The announcement was hidden in the video teasing Netflix as the “Home of True Crime.” There are no details where the focus will be on the upcoming continuation. It’ll likely continue exploring the original story and expanding what has happened since its initial release. Teaser footage already is hinting at some more insanity.

The upcoming continuation will kick off their new slate of real-life documentaries that include The Puppet Master, Hunting the Ultimate Conman, The Tinder Swindler, Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King, and Bad Vegan. Netflix has made a name for itself by exploring darker topics through a variety of documentaries. It’s great to see them continue building upon their success, but it does open up the question of a sequel to Tiger King was truly needed.

It was released just around the time the pandemic started, which gave it quite the boost in viewership yet the insanity also led to some real-world consequences. It makes you wonder what else they could explore within that story, as it would imply some more details have found their way into the world. We’ll get a clearer picture once the first full trailer for the sequel gets released.

  • RUMOR: Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Casting Hints at an Early Introduction of Garp

RUMOR: Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Casting Hints at an Early Introduction of Garp

Netflix entered the dangerous game of live-action adaptations of classic anime properties. Some time ago, we got our first look at Cowboy Bebop, and next, they are preparing to enter production on One Piece. We got a live-action logo with the first script teasing the series’ next step of production, but we’re still awaiting some kind of hint at their upcoming casting. Earlier rumors did hint that Ludi Lin is currently being eyed for the role of Roronoa Zoro, and it looks like they’re adding to the cast.

The first character descriptions hinted at Luffy gathering the various members of his Straw Hat pirate crew throughout the East Blue. And now it seems two more character descriptions have found their way online. Twitter user @OP_Netflix_Fan shared that Steven Maeda and his team are casting two additional series regulars, Garp and Koby. Their addition as regulars is quite a curious addition, which might hint at how the show will integrate later storylines early on.

Koby’s casting was inevitable due to his role in the earlier parts of the East Blue. Luffy stumbles upon him as he got forced to work for the pirate captain Alvida and he has an integral part in Zoro’s brief arc. The casting description highlights that he’ll learn “to stand up for others” throughout the season. Garp’s inclusion is the biggest surprise, as he didn’t have a role until the Post-Enies Lobby Arc in the story. Well, only if you don’t consider the Cover Stories.

Garp’s first introduction is during Chapter 92’s cover story, which is around the time Luffy fought the Arlong Pirates. It’s the ninth entry in the “Diary of Koby-Meppo” cover story, where we follow Koby and Helmeppo’s training to become cadets. As such, it seems like these cover stories will likely be showcased much earlier in the story as we follow both Luffy and Koby’s journey. It’s uncertain if Garp will also get included in the first episode titled “Romance Dawn,” as they’ll connect the dots much earlier in the story instead of having sudden reveals like in the manga. It’s an exciting prospect and we’ll hopefully get some official news in the coming weeks.

  • ‘Loki’s Natalie Holt to Compose HBO Max’s ‘Batgirl’

‘Loki’s Natalie Holt to Compose HBO Max’s ‘Batgirl’

It looks like Loki‘s Natalie Holt has already found her next project. The composer took to Twitter to announce that she’ll be working on the upcoming HBO Max film Batgirl. Last we heard of the project, they were preparing to film in Glasgow and it seems that production is picking up the pace if they already added their composer. The unique soundtrack of the Disney+ series was a standout and makes her addition an exciting prospect on what direction they might take.

Details are still kept under wraps on the upcoming film. Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah offered a brief update that Christina Hodson‘s script has been finished before they started scouting Glasgow. The only confirmed casting is Leslie Grace, who will take on the mantle of Batgirl and her alter-ego Barbara Gordon. It’s uncertain if they’ll stick to her origins as a fan of Batman who took on the mantle on her terms, or she might even be trained by whatever version of the Dark Knight they determine to include.

Holt has built up quite the reputation in the industry with her work on Paddington, Deadwater Fell, and BBC’s Wallander. She’s even played the closing ceremony of the Olympic games, as she’s an accomplished violinist. It’s exciting to see her join another comic book adaptation to lend her unique voice to the industry. We cannot wait to listen to what she has planned for her Batgirl soundtrack.
