  • ‘Marvel’s Behind the Mask’ Documentary Heading to Disney+

‘Marvel’s Behind the Mask’ Documentary Heading to Disney+

Marvel has just announced that a brand new documentary is heading to Disney+ exclusively on February 12th. Marvel’s Behind the Mask will focus on the secret identities rather than the costumed vigilantes. It will feature writers and artists from Marvel’s history who have worked on characters, such as Miles MoralesMs. MarvelLuke Cage, and many more. It will be a feature film directed by Michael Jacobs and got produced by Marvel New Media. The documentary aims to explore the topic of equal rights in a world filled with heroes and villains alike while exploring the impact of these characters on pop culture and media.

This is the second documentary produced by Marvel for the streaming platform. Most notably, they released a series of documentaries titled Marvel 616 just a few months ago. It explored a variety of topics, such as the original Japanese Spider-Man series, the woman of Marvel’s history, and the fan’s dedication to the series. So, Behind the Mask seems like a perfect addition to Disney+. It gives Marvel a chance to explore the many facets of their history.

I am quite curious how they approach this story. Exploring the secret identities is a great idea. It is insane to think that the brand has 80+ years of history on its back, so they certainly have many different corners they can explore. The mentioning of their adaptation into media may also tease that we could get some new footage for Ms. Marvel as she will be making her debut later in the year. Luckily, we won’t have to wait long until the film debuts on the streaming service, as it will stream on February 12th.

  • ‘Titans’: Savannah Welch Cast as Barbara Gordon

‘Titans’: Savannah Welch Cast as Barbara Gordon

Titans is among the many shows that were hit by the pandemic. The production got slated to begin in early 2020, but it got delayed until October of last year. Even with the delay, we still received some news about the show’s upcoming third season during DC FanDome. The team behind the series revealed that fan-favorites such as Scarecrow and Barbra Gordon would be coming to the show’s upcoming third season in a supporting role. We haven’t received any information since, so it has been a long wait. Luckily, that changes today, as Variety reveals that Titans has found its Barbara Gordon.

Savannah Welch was cast in the role. Some might remember her from History Channel’s Six, Tree of Life, and Boyhood. According to Variety, Barbara has taken over as GCPD Commissioner. She once was active as Batgirl until the Joker shot her. After the events, Barbara survived but ended up paralyzed in a wheelchair ever since. Upon the Titans return to Gotham City, she and Dick Grayson will spark up a long-gone romance. It also leads to them developing a new kind of crime-fighting partnership that will define the upcoming season.

Interestingly, there is no mention of her time as Oracle. She may take on this role later in the season, which may be why her description teases their new crime-fighting partnership. The addition of Barbara Gordon is also an essential step forward for inclusivity in TV and cinema. Welch is an amputee, as she lost her leg after an accident in 2016. So, it’ll be interesting to see how they handle this story. She is joining Brenton ThwaitesAnna DiopCurran WaltersTeagan Croft, and Ryan Potter as the series moves to HBO Max.

  • Official Trailer Released for Disney+ Mini-Series ‘Pixar Popcorn’

Official Trailer Released for Disney+ Mini-Series ‘Pixar Popcorn’

Pixar’s latest film Soul was a huge success for the company. It was a critical darling and even managed to add 2.3 million installations for Disney+. Now, they are getting ready for their next project, as they just released a trailer for Pixar Popcorn. It is a brand new collection of mini-shorts that feature characters from their various films. So, unlike their Sparkshorts, these take place within the individual films. It seems the stories will revisit some of our favorite characters no matter what small of a role they had in the original. It is great that even their latest releases aren’t excluded. Check out the trailer for the collection right here:

It looks like a wholesome treat to those that just wanted a bit more from Pixar. This isn’t their first series on the streaming service, as they did have some fun with the Pixar in Real Life series, which offered some fun pranks with our familiar characters. Now, this mini-series collection isn’t our first true long-form story from the animation studio. That will be Win or Lose, which won’t release for some time. It is still great that they are adding some smaller series to still provide some content from their library. Animation isn’t an easy task and takes a lot of time, so it is natural they won’t be releasing one series after another in short succession. It is also completely new territory for the studio, so they might be trying to make sure they get it just right. So, let’s enjoy this new mini-series as we revisit some of our favorite Pixar worlds on January 22.

  • Karen Gillan Confirms Nebula’s Return in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Karen Gillan Confirms Nebula’s Return in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Just a few weeks ago, we got hints that Nebula actress Karen Gillan was joining Thor: Love and Thunder. She was sharing various photos on Instagram about her heading to Australia. Since then, it seems that more Guardians of the Galaxy were joining the production. Just yesterday, we even got the news that Matt Damon was going to become a part of the production. So far, it still has never been officially confirmed. In a recent Instagram Story, she gave away that she is indeed returning as Nebula in the upcoming Thor sequel.

I cut it the other day in preparation for Nebula, so that we don’t have to get so much hair into the bald cap because I have so much hair, it’s unbelievable. It’s just so thick.

It is still crazy to think back to when she shaved her head for Guardians of the Galaxy. While they did find a way to use a bald cap, seems her hair still doesn’t make it an easy process. It is great to finally get a confirmation on her addition. So far, only Chris Pratt‘s return as Star-Lord was officially announced, so this is a safe sign the rest of the Guardians will also make their return. They probably will only have a brief appearance in the film, as Thor took off alongside them at the end of Avengers: Endgame. There is also the possibility that we spend some time with him on various space adventures alongside the Guardians. They might have a bigger role, as they aid the Asgardian in his battle against the God Butcher. There is still some time until the film officially airs, so it will be interesting what else might get announced in the coming months.

  • Analyzing the Influences of the 50s and 60s Episodes of ‘WANDAVISION’

Analyzing the Influences of the 50s and 60s Episodes of ‘WANDAVISION’

WandaVision has finally premiered on Disney+, which means we’ve finally got our first real showcase of the way the cast and crew incorporated various sitcoms into the story. Each of the first two episodes was not only rooted in a different decade, but a specific show from that decade…well, sort of.

    The 1950s

Did You Catch This Easter Egg in the WANDAVISION Trailer? - Nerdist

Episode 1 begins the series in the era which marked the dawn of television sitcoms: the 1950s. I was expecting a lot more imagery and references to the most iconic of 1950’s sitcoms, I Love Lucy, and that it would be the main inspiration behind the episode, but that show has been parodied and referenced so much that it seems almost like a cliche at this point and to do too much of that would have probably felt cartoonish.

So I was totally game to see different way of taking on the era. But it was odd that the main overall inspiration for the 1950’s set episode is clearly The Dick Van Dyke Show…which first aired in 1961.

Thankfully, the clothing, manner of speech, and music (“Yakety Yak” came out in 1959) are all grounded in the intended decade. The main things inspired from The Dick Van Dyke Show are the house set and the episode’s plot. While the storyline isn’t directly lifted from the series, the very first episode of Dick Van Dyke sees the show’s central couple attend a dinner party in order to impress the main character’s boss and being coerced into entertaining the guests at the event.

The other element of the episode that is reminiscent Dick Van Dyke’s is the theme song, from the similar music and tune to the imagery, specifically the moment with Vision trying to carry Wanda into the house bridal-style but dropping her as he walks through the door without opening it. (On Dick Van Dyke the bridal carrying is ruined by tripping upon entering the house).

    The 1960s

WandaVision Episode 2 Recap: 1960s Magic, for the Children | NDTV Gadgets 360

The creators of WandaVision probably elected to pass off The Dick Van Dyke Show as a 1950’s series so they could reserve the 1960’s episode for the show most obviously suited to a show about Scarlet Witch, Bewitched.

The references to Bewitched in this episode are similar to that of The Dick Van Dyke Show in the previous one. The set is very similar to the one seen on the classic sitcom, and the theme song for this era of WandaVision is mostly instrumental and the video for it is entirely animated. While Bewitched is the show most famous for this theme song format, several others of this era used it as well, including I Dream of Jeannie and Angel.

Like the first, this episode’s plot also takes inspiration from the show it’s emulating; the Bewitched episode “It’s Magic” sees Samantha, the “witch” referenced in the show’s title, subbing in for a magician’s assistant at a charity show and secretly using magic in order to help him perform successfully despite his drunkenness.

Another aspect of this episode’s storyline that also references Bewitched (and many other shows that were produced during the 1960s) is the change from black-and-white to color; Bewitched similarly began its run in black-and-white, but switched to color a few seasons into its run in 1966.

Not a Crutch, But a Tool

What I’m finding interesting about the sitcom elements of WandaVision is that some of the more minor references aren’t necessarily from shows that were on the air during the episode’s set time period. At one point in the first episode, Agnes brings a pineapple over for Wanda to use in the dinner party’s dessert, which some have speculated to be a reference to “The Pineapple Incident” on How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014). Later in the episode, a lobster appears as a door-knocker (which was not on the door when it was opened earlier in the show) which could be a reference to the famous lobster/soulmate comparison on Friends (1994-2004).

So far it appears that WandaVision isn’t necessarily trying to make a lot of specific references to a bunch of famous sitcoms (other than the one inspiring the episode’s overall aesthetic and tone) but incorporating various tropes and using the style of the genre to tell its own story, which is ultimately the wisest decision for a show that will ultimately help propel the MCU forward.

  • Matt Damon Lands in Australia to Join ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Matt Damon Lands in Australia to Join ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Here’s an interesting surprise. It seems that while everyone was getting ready for the production of Thor: Love and Thunder, Matt Damon was also sighted alongside his family in Sidney. According to news.com.au, he arrived there for the mandatory quarantine before joining the production. This isn’t the first time he appeared in a Marvel Studios or Thor film. He had a brief sequence in Thor: Ragnarok, where he played the role of Loki reenacting The Dark World‘s death sequence. As noted by the source, it is rather unlikely he’d fly all the way to Australia and go through quarantine for just a brief cameo, so he may have a larger role in the film. There is no official word on it, so we can probably assume that it may just be director Taika Waititi who wanted to continue his running joke. Perhaps we will also see the return of Sam Neill, who played Odin in the previously-mentioned play.

The site also offers some interesting teases of the film’s upcoming production. It is currently set to invest $178 million in the local economy. As a result, it will create 2,500 jobs and work alongside 1,650 Australian businesses. They got a location incentive of $24,1 million from the Australian government. The budgets behind films are high but they play a key role in many economies, as they reinvest that money into local businesses and offer new job opportunities. They also mention that other actors are in Australia for different productions, most notably Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. Elba is especially noteworthy after his character passed away in Avengers: Infinity War. There is still a chance he may have a cameo of some kind, maybe helping Thor through the challenge that faces him.

  • ‘Spider-Man 3’ Set Photos Tease Mysterio’s Effect on NYC

‘Spider-Man 3’ Set Photos Tease Mysterio’s Effect on NYC

Right now, WandaVision is on everyone’s radar, but Marvel Studios has been working hard on prepping their future projects. Some time ago, we covered set photos from the upcoming Disney+ Hawkeye series, which finally confirmed Hailee Steinfeld‘s casting as Kate Bishop. There hasn’t been much circulating since, but luckily it seems that Spider-Man 3 has taken to the streets to film a sequence between Tom Holland‘s Peter and Zendaya‘s MJ. As we cannot share those photos here, you can check them out by clicking this link.

That isn’t all, as we also got one more set video that confirms an old foe still left his presence known after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home. @atlanta_filming shared a video of a local newsstand that includes various small details. Of course, there are two posters that really stick out. There is the return of Mysterio through an “I Believe” poster alongside another one that states “Citizens to Defend Spider-Man”. So, it looks like New York City will be very divisive on the truth surrounding the accusations of Spidey being a killer or not. Mysterio may have died at the end of the last film, but his presence will haunt Spidey throughout the threequel.

I love these details on set and am curious if the camera will linger on it once the film finishes production. The newsstand also includes other references, such as a “We Remember” poster that pays tribute to those that got dusted from the Snap. The missing posters are also rather curious, which reminds me of Kraven’s Last Hunt. The story mainly focused on Kraven and Spidey, but it also included the cannibal villain Vermin. Hopefully, the film doesn’t take this dark angle. The set photos with Peter walking through the streets is also quite curious, as it would imply that the accusations may have gotten lifted at that time. He also seems to be on bad terms with MJ, so it could be him trying to make it up to her. We’ll see if we get some casting in the weeks, as more cast members join the production. It would be good to get some official news amongst all the rumors going around.

  • UPDATE: Michael Giacchino Debunks ‘Secret Invasion’ Rumors

UPDATE: Michael Giacchino Debunks ‘Secret Invasion’ Rumors

UPDATE: It seems that Michael Giacchino got wind of the story by DisInsider and debunked it directly. He responded to a tweet reporting on the story and pointed out that it isn’t true. It doesn’t rule out the possibility he may join later down the line, but for now it seems to be debunked.

Disney+ is going to be Marvel Studios’ big new entry point. They just started with WandaVision and have plenty of various shows already in some form of production. There were quite a few announcements, such as a Don Cheadle-led Armor Wars series and, most notably, an event mini-series adapting the Secret Invasion storyline. So far, they’ve only confirmed that Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn will return. We know from the post-credit sequence from Spider-Man: Far From Home that Fury has been leading a group of Skrulls in space. Meanwhile, Mendelsohn‘s Talos remained on Earth with his wife while impersonating Nick Fury. So, this will act as a direct follow-up to the storyline that got teased at the end of that film.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige did reveal that the storyline will stick to the original’s focus on paranoia. It looks like they might have already found the perfect composer to add just the right music that will probably drive us insane, as we question who one can trust. According to DisInsider, Marvel Studios has already tapped Michael Giacchino to compose the Disney+ mini-series’ score. It isn’t the first time for the director, as he also worked on both MCU Spider-man movies and will compose Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Giacchino worked on many projects over the years, such as the Jurassic World films, Rogue OneStar Trek BeyondCoco, and so many more. He is also currently working on the score for Matt Reeves‘ The Batman film. Now, I do believe he is the perfect choice for Secret Invasion. His work on the series Lost was a huge selling point for the series, as the score is still stuck in my head since the show ended. I could see him echo some elements from that score, as we will face a wide variety of twists.
