‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Continues Box Office Superiority, Now Cruise’s Highest-Grossing Film

The Tom Cruise-led sequel has officially surpassed $800 million worldwide as it continues its trek towards the $1 billion mark. The latest milestone was achieved on Thursday after the film hit $422.2 million domestic and $384.2 million internationally. The film is officially Cruise’s biggest movie ever at the worldwide box office, surpassing Mission: Impossible – Fallout’s $791.1 million worldwide haul.

Going into its third weekend, Maverick could face some more competition with both Jurassic World: Dominion and Lightyear looking to take a chomp out of the box office. As of yesterday, Dominion had earned $8.66 million, which was enough to secure first place for another day, while Maverick earned $6.2 million. While Lightyear, the latest from Disney and Pixar, secured $5.2 million between Wednesday and Thursday previews, which is a tad under what Sonic the Hedgehog 2 managed back in April.

Despite low preview numbers, Lightyear is expected to take in anywhere between $70-85 million at the domestic box office this weekend, for a projected $135 million worldwide opening when all is said and done. Lightyear and Dominion, which is still pulling in decent business going into the weekend, will share IMAX screens this weekend before Dominion cedes them to Lightyear next weekend.

  • THEORY: Wonder Man Will Make His MCU Debut in ‘Thunderbolts’

THEORY: Wonder Man Will Make His MCU Debut in ‘Thunderbolts’

Wonder Man is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his arrival might be a lot sooner than expected. The Hollywood Reporter revealed on Thursday that Community writer Andrew Guest and Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton will team up to give Simon Williams his own series on Disney+. Cameras are reportedly set to begin rolling in 2023, meaning fans can likely expect the character to make his live-action debut sometime in the following year. Although, should Marvel be inclined to have a little fun with the character’s origin, it’s possible audiences actually see Wonder Man in theaters by the end of next year.

Early reports indicate the Wonder Man series will focus on his well-known career in Hollywood, an aspect of the character that has been a staple since it was introduced in the early 1980’s. At the time, after years of internal conflict and uncertainty about his future, Williams took his talents to Los Angeles and began an acting career, becoming known for performing dangerous stunts that only his invulnerable body could withstand. Despite this intriguing turn of events, however, Wonder Man has decades of material to work with pre-Hollywood. The character has existed since 1964, when he was introduced in The Avengers #9 as a new member of the Masters of Evil.

Before he was a hero, Williams was the son of industrialist Sanford Williams, a rival of the world-famous Tony Stark. After his father’s death, Simon is outmatched by Stark and fears he’ll lose his family’s business, an anxiety that results in an ill-advised embezzlement scheme brought on by his villainous brother, Eric (a.k.a. the Grim Reaper). As it goes, Williams is caught, and is sent to prison with a hatred for Stark and his “bodyguard” Iron Man. Seeing an opportunity, Baron Zemo and the Enchantress, the two leading members of the Masters of Evil, spring Williams and offer him a deal – they turn him into a being with enough power to vanquish Stark and the Avengers, and he saves his company and gets revenge on the man who wronged him. Williams accepts, and an experimental procedure turns him into the ion-fueled superbeing known as Wonder Man.

Of course, Williams quickly sees the wrong in this and reforms, but the brief antagonistic period of his life is perhaps among his most compelling eras. It would be a shame for the MCU to skip over this origin and jump straight to his days on the big screen. Luckily, a major project announced just days ago could very well be hiding its own Wonderous secret that allows for Simon’s story to be told in full. Thunderbolts, a film based on the team of supervillains who masquerade as heroes, was announced as being in development last Thursday by Variety. This is relevant to the Wonder Man conversation for one big, charming, fan-favorite reason: Baron Helmut Zemo, bad guy extraordinaire.

As previously mentioned, Zemo played a big role in the creation of Wonder Man. He was the man responsible for the whole ion-human ordeal, and decades later, he would also be the person responsible for founding the anti-heroic Thunderbolts. It’s expected that Daniel Bruhl will reprise his role as the MCU’s take on Zemo in Thunderbolts, potentially leading a team comprised of members recruited by Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ Contessa Val over the course of multiple Phase Four projects. The names linked to the Thunderbolts thus far give away a possible link to another team of Marvel characters assembled in the late 2000s, known as the Dark Avengers. That group, formed by Norman Osborn, was also a team of supervillains pretending to be good guys, but had each member take over the mantle of a pre-existing Avenger. For example, Venom took on the Spider-Man role while Bullseye wore Hawkeye’s classic costume. With Florence Pugh‘s Black Widow and Wyatt Russell‘s U.S. Agent already on the payroll, it seems completely believable that the MCU’s Thunderbolts might be some kind of amalgamation of the original comic book team and the Dark Avengers concept.

Running through the potential roster, the MCU Thunderbolts already have their own Captain America and Black Widow, a Hulk in Tim Roth‘s Abomination, and probably even a Vision replacement with Hannah John-Kamen‘s Ghost. Regardless of all this, they lack an equivalent to the most powerful current Avenger, Brie Larson‘s Captain Marvel. In the same way the Masters of Evil once had Simon Williams infiltrate the Avengers with malicious intent, the MCU could have Zemo and Val offering a disgruntled Williams the chance to shine by succumbing to a new, experimental procedure that might turn him into Captain Marvel’s equal. In case anyone is confused at this point, the suggestion here is that audiences may very well see Wonder Man’s origin play out in Thunderbolts before he makes the jump to his own spin-off series.

The timing of the two projects’ filming lines up well enough. It’s not confirmed when Thunderbolts will start production, but if Jake Schreier‘s project starts filming in Summer 2023, it would be on track for a mid-2024 release. As is often the case, the turn-around time on television projects tends to be quicker than with film, so if Wonder Man also begins filming around this date, or even slightly after, it could work out that the latter releases just after Thunderbolts and acts as a direct spin-off. The two could even film in tandem, as a way to more effectively utilize the time of some very busy leads like Bruhl and Pugh.

This could also be a way for Marvel to include more characters from its larger repertoire. Wonder Man’s comic origin heavily features the original Enchantress, and if Marvel Studios wanted to follow suit, they could bring Sophia Di Martino‘s Sylvie into the fold as the Thunderbolts’ Asgardian representative. On top of this, Wonder Man will almost certainly feature Eric Williams in a supporting role, and the baddie brother of the Williams family could pop up alongside Simon in Thunderbolts initially, before terrorizing the world as Grim Reaper later. Maybe it’s an encounter with Zemo or Val in Thunderbolts that gets those Villainous wheels turning in the first place. Either way, the potential for an easy, world-building crossover is there, and it seems too good for Marvel Studios not to capitalize on while the getting is good.

Special shoutout to Maggie from Collider for helping to build out this theory!

  • REVIEW: ‘Keeping Company’

    REVIEW: ‘Keeping Company’

Keeping Company is billed as a movie that mixes ruthless corporate salesmen with vicious suburban serial killers, and boy, does it do so beautifully. It’s hard to sense what Keeping Company wants to be when it starts. Is it going to be a comedy? Is it going to be about two murdering insurance salesmen? Off the bat, it’s pretty unclear, and that’s something the movie uses to its advantage.

The movie begins with two men, Sonny and Noah, who are door-to-door insurance salesmen. They’re always looking to get their numbers up, no matter the cost, whether it is to impress a parental figure (in Sonny’s case) or simply to climb the corporate ladder. Their methods are questionable, and they’ll stop at nothing to raise their numbers — even if it means harassing a questionable man. Enter Lucas. After he hits their car, Sonny and Noah are unwilling to let him go free and insist on following him despite his pleas for privacy. Is it the smartest move? Absolutely not. But their ignorance prevents them from thinking of the consequences of their actions.

It is in this moment that Keeping Company becomes one of the rare indie horror movies to get it right, and it’s a thrilling ride until the end moments. There are plenty of what-the-hell moments including one involving Sonny’s dad’s restaurant. It’s such a surprising moment that will surely leave a taste in the mouths of viewers – and not necessarily in the best way. As the movie moves away from Sonny and Noah, turning the focus toward Lucas and his grandmother, Keeping Company thrives.

One of the most impressive bits of the movie is that it does successfully mark the similarities between the sinister household and the ruthless worth of business as promised in the synopsis. The corporate world is a vicious one and it’s not entirely surprising that a movie might try to compare serial killers to the business world. However, Keeping Company succeeds in making the serial killers look no worse than the money-hungry insurance folks desperate to up their sales numbers. When a woman goes in trying to claim the money from her plan for her husband? They tell her that, by the company’s rules, her husband is still considered alive and she’ll need to continue paying the premium to receive the benefits should she be able to prove his death. It’s a messed-up scene in a film full of death, but it hits harder than those because it’s realistic.

Is Keeping Company perfect? No. Is it enjoyable? Yes. Its relatively short run-time of an hour and twenty-two minutes flies by with ease. The only issue with the film would be its editing. The cutaways are frustrating and do take away from some of the emotional impact. And the score isn’t exactly memorable. But even still, Keeping Company is a fascinating look at how despicable humanity can be when it comes to achieving their desires; they’ll do whatever is needed to benefit themselves, even if it means murder or robbing a financially insecure person blind.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff Centered on Jon Snow in Development

‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff Centered on Jon Snow in Development

As HBO prepares to launch its first Game of Thrones spinoff series, titled House of the Dragon, the network is looking to grow its Game of Thrones universe even further. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that HBO is currently developing a spinoff series centered on Jon Snow with actor Kit Harington attached to star.

It is of note that, while the project is in development, it hasn’t necessarily been given a series order. Should the project receive an official order from HBO, Harington will reprise his role as Snow from Game of Thrones. While details are sparse regarding the project, the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones saw Snow learn plenty about who he truly was – including his name, Aegon Targaryen. The Jon Snow series will differ quite a bit from the other projects in development, as those stories are focused on unknown stories from the past, while the Jon Snow series would allow the series to revisit fan-favorite characters.

As of this writing, there are seven Game of Thrones projects in various stages of development at HBO. House of Dragons, the first of the spinoffs, will hit HBO on Aug. 21st and tells the story of a civil war within House Targaryen and is set about 200 years before the events in Thrones. Also confirmed to be in development are 10,000 Ships with showrunner Amanda Segel9 Voyages with showrunner Bruno Heller, and Dunk and Egg with showrunner Steve Conrad. Also in development are three animated titles, including The Golden Empire.

  • ‘Final Fantasy 7’ Remake Will End With Third Entry

‘Final Fantasy 7’ Remake Will End With Third Entry

The Final Fantasy 7 25th Anniversary was quite an event. Not only did we get updates on the various mobile games but confirmation on a remake of the Crisis Core game, as well as the title for the next entry after the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. It turns out the game will be titled Rebirth and that is not all the announcements we got. It was also confirmed that the current “Remake” franchise will end as a trilogy.

The third title has not been named and is likely going to be in development for quite a bit longer. Rebirth’s first trailer seemingly hints at Cloud and Sephiroth working side-by-side, which hints at the classic flashback sequence from the game. Plus, they may twist these events, especially with the team being more aware of what’s happening. The “imposter” discussion could be a hint at that and further solidify the uncertainty of how the game may move away from the original.

So, for those that were wondering how they’d pack the entire original game into multiple entries, it does seem like the first game was the only true remake of the original Final Fantasy 7. As we saw at the end of the last entry, not only does it hint at Aerith potentially surviving but even our old friend Zack is seemingly alive due to the events changing. So, wherever the game is heading next, it’s not going to be what we’ve played through in the original.

  • Iman Vellani Joins Disney Wish’s ‘Avengers: Quantum Encounter’ Dining Event

Iman Vellani Joins Disney Wish’s ‘Avengers: Quantum Encounter’ Dining Event

It looks like the upcoming Disney Cruise Line has added another star-studded cast member to its new Avengers: Quantum Encounter interactive show. The project already will see Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, and Brie Larson return to reprise their roles from the films, but now it has been unveiled that Iman Vellani is also going to join the Cruise Line production as her iconic character, Ms. Marvel.

The event is described as Disney’s most ambitious dining experience, where a new dining experience is offered to diners through the help of Pym Tech. Yet, that kind of technology always seems to attract trouble, as the Disney Wish will see Ultron try to take over, who will be once again voiced by Ross Marquand from What If…?. Captain America and Captain Marvel will join in time to take on the threat with Vellani‘s Ms. Marvel as their hero-in-training along for the ride. Unless Larson appears in Ms. Marvel, this may be their first team-up together.

    .

It seems like they are going all out for their Worlds of Marvel experience, as even Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige opens up the video teasing the Disney Wish experience. They also just recently opened a new Guardians of the Galaxy rollercoaster, which saw many cast members from the original series return give a little something to those visiting that love the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We might get more hints at how the experience is going to be brought to life with more trailers teasing the unique experience for those that booked a trip on the Disney Wish.

  • Marvel Studios’ ‘Wonder Man’ Series May Be Currently Planned as a Hollywood Satire

Marvel Studios’ ‘Wonder Man’ Series May Be Currently Planned as a Hollywood Satire

The news has just dropped that Shang-Chi director Daniel Destin Cretton is joining forces with Brooklyn Nine-Nine writer Andrew Guest to adapt Wonder Man as a Disney+ series. It’s part of the overall deal he has made with Marvel Studios, and it turns out that there’s one more detail that was kept out of the initial brief. As Simon Williams, the man who would become Wonder Man is an actor, and Variety’s Joe Otterson has pointed out that the series may be planned as a Hollywood satire.

He does highlight that he can’t 100% confirm if that is the direction they are going. Marvel Studios is no stranger to adapting along the way and with it in its early stages, a lot can change once cameras start rolling, which is seemingly already planned for 2023. So, they may have most of the base scripts already mapped out and are putting their team together.

The question remains if Nathan Fillion will be the one to once again give the character a chance. Though, they may use this opportunity to recast and nab someone younger for the role. They have many angles to take, as an older actor could showcase a “trying to get back the glory days” storyline or go with a younger actor struggling to find his footing. Wonder Man offers a great variety of stories and it’ll be interesting to see which direction they take it.

  • BREAKING: ‘Shang-Chi’ Director Developing ‘Wonder Man’ Series

BREAKING: ‘Shang-Chi’ Director Developing ‘Wonder Man’ Series

Here’s a surprise it looks like Wonder Man is the next hero to get his own series, as The Hollywood Reporter has just shared that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsDestin Daniel Cretton is working alongside Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community writer, Andrew Guest, to develop a live-action series based on the popular character. Guest is the series head writer while Cretton will exec produce the series. Though, he is likely also set to direct the pilot episode. It’s currently eyeing a 2023 production start.

the project is part of Cretton‘s new deal with Marvel Studios and will head to Disney+ like many Marvel Studios projects before it. Given the team behind it, it’s very likely to follow the comedy format that She-Hulk, Attorney at Law is going to use. That means we might get around nine episodes for a full season, though who knows if they might take a different approach as they adapt to the new format.

Wonder Man almost appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at one point, as Nathan Fillion shot a few scenes as the character. For those that don’t know, Wonder Man is actually an actor known as Simon Williams. He’s the original blueprint for the brainwaves that created Vision in the comics. He also is more an actor than a superhero, who would eventually have various interpretations throughout the years due to his abilities. The potential of a look into Hollywood through the lens of a superhero has been an exciting prospect to explore for some time, something we even pitched a while back.

  • Jonathan Entwistle Teases “Familiar Faces” in Netflix’s New ‘Power Rangers’ Cinematic Universe

Jonathan Entwistle Teases “Familiar Faces” in Netflix’s New ‘Power Rangers’ Cinematic Universe

It’s been some time since it was announced that Jonathan Entwistle was announced as the head behind a new cinematic universe for the Power Rangers franchise. Ever since we’ve heard very little bout the project. Well, that was until now as we finally got an update that Jenny Klein will showrun a Power Rangers series. There are no details on how this project will effectively work or if it may be the central franchise-building others, but it finally moving forward offers an exciting prospect that we might get more details on it sooner rather than later.

Entwistle was just as excited about the news, as he took to his personal Twitter account to share the news as well as tease that it’s a big part of this new cinematic universe. He also went on to confirm that they are establishing a new universe (a curious wording given the multiversal status of the Boom! Comics adaptations). What stands out, however, is that he also teases some “familiar faces” joining.

    https://twitter.com/jonaent/status/1536860133753401345

Not too long ago, we heard from former Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson that they haven’t been involved in some capacity with the project. Of course, things may have changed and they were still busy mapping out the concept before getting the original crew involved. There’s also the 30th anniversary just around the corner, which could be the perfect timing to kick off this new universe and how it may connect to the rest. So, here’s hoping we’ll get more insight soon.
