  • ‘The Thing about Pam’s Jenny Klein to Showrun New ‘Power Rangers’ Series for Netflix

‘The Thing about Pam’s Jenny Klein to Showrun New ‘Power Rangers’ Series for Netflix

It looks like eOne’s Power Rangers reboot over at Netflix is finally picking up some speed. For quite some time now, we’ve learned that Jonathan Entwistle has been supervising a Power Rangers universe, but we never got any concrete information on where the project may or may not be heading. Now that all changed, as they’ve added their first member to the team. The Thing About Pam‘s Jenny Klein has inked a deal with Entertainment One and will act as showrunner on the Power Rangers series heading to Netflix, where she’ll work with Entwistle on the series. eOne’s EVP, Gabe Marano, shared the following statement:

Building this partnership with Jenny, whose talent and passion transcends genres, is an exciting moment for us. We believe that her distinctive vision makes her the perfect fit to help us develop Hasbro’s deep library of IP, as well as original projects, and we’re thrilled to have her on board.

    Gabe Marano

There are still no details on what exactly the upcoming new take on the franchise will offer. Power Rangers is still currently airing with the Dino Fury series, which marks the 29th season since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers aired. There is likely still going to be a continuation as with Klein only joining now, they might not start production on a new series until 2023. Still, it’s exciting to finally get an update and it does seem like they are picking up the pace for the new Netflix universe based on the iconic series.

  • Exploring ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Potential Film Trilogy

Exploring ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Potential Film Trilogy

What started as a cult success on children’s television has grown into one of pop culture’s most exciting new franchises. When Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted in 2005, it was chock full of potential. While that series focused on the adventures of one Avatar, in particular, it also set up an entire universe to play in. Not only is the future of the timeline unknown and full of possibility, but a long history of characters and eras exists for creatives to explore in any way they choose. The latest storytelling avenue was just revealed by Paramount and Nickelodeon Animation to be a theatrically released animated film trilogy.

Lauren Montgomery, who worked on multiple episodes of the original series, is set to direct the first entry in what could be the next major chapter in the story of the Avatar cycle. Yet, there is no word on what this new journey might entail. Rumors have circulated in the past about the potential plotlines of a film series, but nothing has been confirmed one way or the other. With so many canon incarnations of the Avatar, and a world full of intriguing side characters and environments, it’s awfully difficult to narrow down all the options. So, to help everyone out, we at Murphy’s Multiverse have strung together a list of plausible storylines that could end up being the focus of Avatar‘s return to the big screen.

    The Kyoshi Trilogy

    Avatar Kyoshi

The produced animated series set in the universe of Avatar have mostly focused on the last two Avatars to inhabit the original life cycle, Airbender Aang and Waterbender Korra. However, significant chunks of each show, including full episodes, have been dedicated to uncovering the events surrounding former incarnations.

One of the most popular, and most frequently mentioned, is Kyoshi, the Earthbending Avatar who existed two lifetimes before audiences met Aang in The Last Airbender‘s pilot. She is renowned for her lethal tactics and strong personality, never backing down from her opinions or a fight. Her legacy even includes a group of the world’s most elite warriors, named for her and donning her signature makeup and apparel.

While The Last Airbender only gave fans a glimpse into the later life of Kyoshi, a duology of novels from author F.C. Yee took a dive into her troubled past. The Rise of Kyoshi and The Shadow of Kyoshi explores the titular character’s earliest days as the Avatar, starting with the discovery of her abilities and ending with the moment she discovered who she really wanted to be. The books are brilliant, and while they have yet to receive their own third entry, they could be the basis for a trilogy of films adapting Kyoshi’s origin to animation.

Some of the aforementioned rumors have hinted at the first film is a prequel to the original series, but the Avatar preceding Aang already had most of his story told by the time of that show’s finale. It would make sense for Paramount to go back one Avatar further, and bring to life a series of books that deserve more recognition than they get.

    A New Cycle Begins

    Avatar Korra’s Past Lives

Perhaps the biggest universal development to come out of The Legend of Korra was the ending of the original Avatar cycle. After learning of its origins with Avatar Wan, a dastardly plot by cultist Unalaq and the powerful spirit Vaatu permanently cuts off Korra’s connection to her past lives and forces her to start the cycle anew. When the show ends, Korra is still very much in her youth, and the world has a long way to go before another Avatar takes center stage. A handful of comics have continued Korra’s adventures with her trusted companions, but they haven’t done much in the way of establishing what the distant future may hold for the Four Nations or the Spirit World.

If the new film trilogy wanted to be completely different from anything else in the Last Airbender franchise, it could tell the story of whoever comes after Avatar Korra. The culture, and society, established in the series are shown to be evolving quickly, much in the same way the real world began to develop after the Industrial Revolution. Where previous Avatars operated out of a planet that looked a lot like ancient Eastern civilization, Korra was forced to deal with problems in landscapes that looked more like major Western cities from the turn of the century.

At that rate, it’s likely the Avatar after her would be facing off against computers in a universe with vengeful spirits and people who can manipulate the natural elements. If that wasn’t enough, they’d be doing it with only a single previous life to guide them. What would that even look like? Maybe Lauren Montgomery intends to find out.

    A Non-Avatar Story

    Prince Zuko

Essentially all of the major projects in the Last Airbender franchise have been centered around the Avatar of their era and for good reason. The struggle of balancing duty with personal life, the mystique of communing with the Spirit World, and the pure coolness factor of bending all four elements is a hard subject to resist. However, if the stories told in animation and writing have proven anything, it’s that sometimes the supporting characters can be just as interesting.

Every Avatar has their team of friends and family ready to lay it all down for what they believe in, and those lovable sidekicks have a tendency to develop their own fanbase outside of their respective protagonists. If the creatives behind this new series of films wanted to expand this universe from a different angle, they could use the trilogy to tell tales of important figures who changed the world without being the Avatar.

There have been hints of a Zuko solo project in the past, which could end up being part of Montgomery’s new project. The character has a devoted online following and can certainly draw a crowd. He’s also among the best characters ever created for Last Airbender or its many spin-offs and sequels, so Paramount could do much worse than to tell a tale of the legendary Firebender. Although, if this doesn’t turn out to be the case, there are plenty of others who also deserve a chance.

In fact, the films could even create a new lead with no relation to their era’s Avatar. Imagine a movie that tells the story of someone with undervalued abilities, rising to the occasion and saving their people as the Avatar deals with a separate danger in the background. It’s a concept that major franchises should explore more often, and something that worked wonders for Lucasfilm in Star Wars projects like Rogue One and The Clone Wars.

  • ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Passes $400M at the Domestic Box Office

‘Doctor Strange 2’ Passes $400M at the Domestic Box Office

While Top Gun Maverick has managed to pass the $400M domestic as the legacy title is pulling in some amazing numbers worldwide, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness wasn’t too far behind. The film faced a harsh drop in its second weekend, which isn’t too uncommon with frontloaded crowd-pleasers but has showcased its horror roots by staying quite consistent throughout the rest of its run. As of now, the film has pulled in $935M worldwide and now officially stands at $400.3M domestically.

There was some concern the film wouldn’t even hit the $900M mark but it has left that behind quite a bit. The film will release on Disney+ on June 22nd, which will still give it some time to potentially scratch the $940M mark. As per usual, the international cum is the strongest for the Marvel Studios entry and while Top Gun has taken a lot of accolades for its powerful jet-fueled wings, the Marvel project proves that the market is still ready for a variety of films to pull in massive box office numbers.

Maverick also is sharing a similar trend that we saw with Jurassic World and Star Wars: The Force Awakens back in the day. After a long pause at the box office, the films have managed to make quite a splash domestically and in international markets. There’s a different kind of energy to these projects that complement Marvel Studios’ approach to genre-mixing giving it a unique standing and longevity in the market. We might see the box office evolve in interesting ways moving forward.

  • Kamala Khan Could Still Be Inhuman in ‘Ms. Marvel’

Kamala Khan Could Still Be Inhuman in ‘Ms. Marvel’

Viewers are slowly learning more about Kamala Khan’s powers and their origins in Ms. Marvel. The unfolding mystery is the result of the apparent overhaul of the titular character’s super-powered background as it existed in the comics. While her actual powers are clearly different from those Kamala had on the page, another likely change still hangs over the live-action series. In the comics, Kamala was Inhuman and her exposure to Terrigen Mist is what activated her powers. While it seems unlikely the series is keeping this aspect of the character, some are holding out hope. So could Kamala be Inhuman in Ms. Marvel? Let’s look at both sides of that question.

The Case Against Kamala Being Inhuman

The existence, or at least the recognition, of Inhumans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is complicated. While a multiversal Black Bolt serving as a member of the Illuminati in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is clear evidence of Inhumans in the multiverse, the canonicity of Earth-616 Inhumans is hotly debated. Inhumans were prominent in Marvel Television’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and, eventually, their own spinoff series on ABC. Moving past the actual arguments on whether those shows are canon to the MCU, the simple fact that it is debated is not a good sign for Kamala Khan as an Inhuman.

On a common-sense level, it seems less likely that a Marvel Studios production would be drawing inspiration for those shows when crafting Ms. Marvel. Furthermore, Inhuman-related events in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alone would have had a substantial impact on the MCU that we simply have not seen and would need to be reconciled. So, if Ms. Marvel were to include Kamala as an Inhuman, on a practical level the series would be introducing or formally establishing that group in the MCU. It does not seem likely that Marvel Studios would want to do this in a Disney+ series focused on Kamala and her cultural heritage.

Another reason for doubting an Inhuman presence in Ms. Marvel is that the activation of her powers did not really fall in line with what is known about Inhumans. The bangle that was passed down through her family clearly has some superhuman or supernatural quality that unlocked Kamala’s powers. There was no Terrigen Mist or anything that seemed remotely close to its present (but see below for an argument against that). She also did not seem to go through the process of Terrigenesis, which generally ends in the subject morphing inside of a cocoon.

Lastly, as hinted at above, Ms. Marvel seems to be dedicated to exploring Kamala’s history through a much more personal familial lens. While being an Inhuman would also carry that theme, it would likely distance the story from the more intimate, culturally-focused one we have seen over the course of the first two episodes. Episode 2 ended in a way that could suggest that Kamala is connected to a much larger superhuman group, but rumors that Kamala or her adversaries may be connected to Djinn in some way could explain that.

The Reasons Why Kamala Might Be Inhuman

Despite the fact that Marvel Studios has offered no direct or overly obvious foreshadowing of Kamala being Inhuman in Ms. Marvel, there are still plenty of avenues to speculate that her Inhuman origin will be revealed later in the series. Perhaps the most obvious argument is that Kamala in Inhuman in the comics and that connection plays a major role in her character at times. While the MCU is not particularly known for its dedication to being comic accurate, not having Kamala be Inhuman is indeed a major change to the character even by MCU standards. But Wanda and Pietro Maximoff are an easy example of Marvel Studios overhauling a then-established origin of their characters.

With that comic history comes a fan base that wants to see Kamala remain Inhuman in the MCU. Fans do not determine Marvel Studios’ decisions, but the franchise certainly would be aware of the reactions. It is also clear that the MCU will formally introduce or establish Inhumans in the main Earth-616 universe at some point. Arguably, Kamala could be a good character to start with. Plus, if other Inhumans are introduced relatively soon, it might be a bit awkward that Kamala is not one of them.

Another consideration is how Kamala will connect to Captain Marvel and The Marvels. The Captain Marvel corner of the universe—from what we know about it—is very Kree-heavy. Monica Rambeau seems to have Skrull connections, which connects her to that arena as well. If Kamala were Inhuman, that would mean she is descended from those who were genetically modified by Kree and with Kree DNA. This would arguably be able to give her a proper connection going into The Marvels since we do not have much of one yet.

Even though no Terrigen Mist seemed present when Kamala’s powers were activated, there is speculation that her bangle actually contained Terrigen Crystals instead. There is no evidence that truly disproves that theory, though the question of why she did not appear to go through Terrigenesis remains. One theory is that Kamala is slowly going through the process and will fully do so by the end of the series.

Finally, in response to the Djinn rumors and theories, there is still an argument that it is all connected to Inhumans at the end of the day. Rumors that one adversary Kamala will face in Ms. Marvel is a version of ClanD estine—a superhuman family descended from a Djinn—may not matter. Perhaps Clan Destine is actually a faction of Inhumans, or maybe the terminology involving Djinn and Inhuman gets interchanged (though that seems odd). Maybe Djinn are involved but not connected to Kamala, or maybe those rumors are all false.

At the end of the day, it is understandable that many are frustrated or confused at the concept of Kamala not being Inhuman. While nothing on the surface of Ms. Marvel so far has pointed clearly to her being Inhuman, there is no denying that there is still plenty of room for some fans to hope that it will be established by the end of the series.

The first two episodes of Ms. Marvel are now streaming on Disney+.

  • Tom Hardy Teases ‘Venom 3’ With A Tease of a “Last Dance”

Tom Hardy Teases ‘Venom 3’ With A Tease of a “Last Dance”

If there’s a superhero franchise from the last two decades that’s managed to truly surpass expectations, it’s Venom. Many fans assumed the goofy, gritty Spider-Man spin-off would be dead on arrival, but instead, the duology has become a massive success with a third entry on the way. Tom Hardy, the charismatic star behind both Eddie Brock and his symbiote partner Venom, recently took to Instagram to share that he is now in possession of the threequel’s script.

Written by Kelly Marcel, based on a story by Marcel and Hardy himself, the new film does not have an officially revealed title. The image on social media features a little doodle of Venom in the title’s place.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce3bvgWseUK/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

On the actor’s Instagram story, he shared the script cover with an added sticker from Michael Jordan‘s popular Last Dance documentary. It’s a curious inclusion, and while there is still very little known about the plot of Venom 3, it would indicate the film may be the character’s final ride. It would be a surprising decision for Hardy and the folks at Sony to make, should this be the case. Venom is currently one of their biggest cash cows, and fans have been clamoring to see the alien antihero interact with more characters from the larger Marvel Universe. Most specifically, of course, Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man, who has been hinted to be on a collision course with Hardy‘s Venom for some time.

A few false-alarm post-credits scenes seemed to put the iconic arch-enemies on a oath toward each other, until more tinkering with the multiverse prevented it from happening. However, there is currently a bit of symbiote goo left in the mainline MCU, and it’s yet to be revealed how that will factor into the futures of Venom or Spider-Man.

  • ‘Astro Boy’ Reboot in Development by ‘Miraculous’ Creator

‘Astro Boy’ Reboot in Development by ‘Miraculous’ Creator

It looks like Astro Boy, the iconic anime series from 1963, is once again making its return. Variety has just unveiled that Tomas Astruc, who created the popular animated series Miraculous – Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir, is working on the animated adaptation. Method Animation, who worked on that series as well as The Little Prince, will work on the new series together with Shibuya Productions.

The series was adapted from the original manga by Osamu Tezuka, which has sold over 100 million copies worldwide and was the franchise to set the path to modern Japanese anime. The simple concept of a child-like robot also became an iconic element of the industry, which would eventually also spark similar ideas such as Megaman. The following statement was shared on its international production.

Tezuka’s original comics were far advanced in delivering a powerful message to readers worldwide. These fantastic stories of the little boy who flies are all about strong values that still resonate today for a global audience.

It seems that this adaptation is seemingly going to be a timeless adaptation. Astruc will direct 52 half-hour episodes for the series which will be CGI-3D. So, we can expect a style quite similar to Miraculous. Still, it’s great to see the classic anime character getting another adaptation of this childhood classic.

  • Theory Thursday: A Mysterious Comics Character May Explain ‘Ms. Marvel’ Episode 2 Mystery

Theory Thursday: A Mysterious Comics Character May Explain ‘Ms. Marvel’ Episode 2 Mystery

Ms. Marvel Episode 2 built a solid foundation for the mystery of Kamala Khan’s super-powered origins. The apparent change in her powers and origin from the comics is one of the most discussed topics with the live-action adaptation, but the fact that there exists a bona fine mystery in the series’ plot is certainly worth something. While there is plenty to speculate about concerning Kamala’s family history and the nature of the bangle that activated her powers, a smaller detail about her history could have major implications going forward. This article discusses how an interesting cosmic character from the comics could play a role in both Kamala’s past and future.

In the most recent episode of Ms. Marvel, Kamala’s dad recounted the story of Kamala’s mother’s family during Partition. While leaving India, Kamala’s grandmother was a toddler. She was separated from her family after her mother disappeared without a trace. The toddler was able to find her way back to the last train and the rest of her family by following a trail of stars. This story, along with some other theories about how Kamala’s powers may connect to the greater universe, may hint at the introduction of Singularity, a peculiar character from the comics.

    A-Force (2016)

Not much is known about Singularity, but she is supposedly a sentient quantum singularity who was once affiliated with A-Force. Generally, Singularity can teleport dozens of people vast distances, fly, cross dimensional barriers, and use osmosis to absorb objects or people into her form, within which a pocket universe apparently exists. Interestingly, Singularity is humanoid in form but her body simply looks like the night sky, including stars.

Singularity could be involved in Kamala’s family history in several ways, but the “trail of stars” certainly invokes her imagery. The fact that she can exist outside of time and move through dimensions could connect to Kamala’s power connections to the Quantum Realm or quantum energy in general. If the bangle belonged to Kamala’s great grandmother, she presumably had some access to the powers. Perhaps something went wrong with quantum energy she she was removed from time, which would be similar to how Kamala met Singularity in Ms. Marvel comics. In that way, the cosmic being may have been an ally. But perhaps Kamala’s ancestor actually became Singularity, which would make sense that she helped guide her daughter back to her family.

    Ms. Marvel (2015)

Interestingly, there may have been a hint in Episode 1 that Singularity could be related to Captain Marvel in some way. It is a bit more of a stretch, but the Captain Marvel figurine at AvengerCon looks like a sparkly, dark blue figure in costume. In other words, it kind of looked like Singularity. If Carol Danvers was somehow involved in the story of Kamala’s great grandmother, it would provide for a direct connection between her and Kamala by the end of the series. It might also answer some lingering questions about what Danvers has been up to since Avengers: Endgame. But there is meaningful imagery in Kamala gazing at the Singularity-looking figure at AvengerCon if she might have the opportunity to look up to the actual being.

Ms. Marvel so far promises to be a fun and suspenseful mystery. Episode 2 raised far more questions about Kamala’s story than answers, which means that there is plenty of room to theorize for the series. Singularity has comics history with Kamala, so it would be interesting to see if or how she would make the jump into live-action.

The first two episodes of Ms. Marvel are now streaming on Disney+.

  • RUMOR: ‘Tokyo Vice’ Director May Have Joined Netflix’s Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Series

RUMOR: ‘Tokyo Vice’ Director May Have Joined Netflix’s Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Series

We’ve been slowly getting a good look behind the scenes at who is working on the upcoming live-action One Piece series. Just recently, the agency United Agents gave away that Doctor Who director Emma Sullivan was working on the production. Earlier in April we also learned that Lost in Space‘s Tim Southam has joined the production as Daredevil‘s Marc Jobst wrapped work on the first two episodes of the series. Now, it may look like one more has been uncovered.

First shared by @OnePieceNxBr on Twitter, an agency site for hair and make-up artist Amanda Ross McDonald reveals she is actively working on Project Panda, the name of One Piece‘s production. What sticks out is that alongside the previous three directors, they also confirm one more is part of the team. The list reveals that Josef Kubota Wladyka may be directing episodes of the series spearheaded by Steven Maeda and Matt Owens.

Wlydka has been building up quite the filmography, as he not only worked on quite a few episodes of Netflix’s iconic Narcos and Narcos: Mexico series, but also recently worked on HBO Max’s break-out hit Tokyo Vice. He’s also worked on Fear the Walking Dead and The Terror. So, he has quite a varied background that’ll definitely come in handy

  • ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ Will Feature Disney Worlds

‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ Will Feature Disney Worlds

Here’s a rather curious surprise, as Tetsuya Nomura, the man behind Kingdom Hearts, has offered some insight into what the upcoming fourth entry has to offer. We were teased about the new world known as Quadratum some time ago, but it seemingly hinted at a very different game moving forward. Yet, it turns out that those worried we won’t get a chance to visit Disney Worlds.

In an interview with Game Informer, he reflected on his time with the franchise and also discusses some minor aspects of what the future has to offer. In it, he also confirms that we’ll definitely be visiting Disney worlds yet wouldn’t elaborate on which ones.

With regards to Kingdom Hearts IV, players are definitely going to see a few Disney worlds in there. I just want to mention that they don’t need to worry so much about this aspect of the game. It might feel slightly different from previous Kingdom Hearts titles, but once players have had a chance to play the game, I’m sure they’ll be relieved to find that it is definitely a Kingdom Hearts title. It’s the game series that they’ve come to know and love.

    Tetsuya Nomura

Of course, there’s been a lot of speculation that one of the “Disney” worlds they’ll visit might turn out to be from Star Wars. The new art style also seemingly hints at a possible Marvel inclusion, as the game has seemingly moved away from its more cartoon-inspired roots in its graphics. Well, it turns out that also played a key factor as they approached the project.

As far as the graphic qualities … since with each new title, the specs have been really increasing and there’s so much more we can do in terms of graphics, it kind of limits the number of worlds that we can create in a sense. At this time we’re considering how to approach that, but there will be Disney worlds in Kingdom Hearts IV.

    Tetsuya Nomura

They may have made some decisions based on the graphical challenges, as the more realistic the designs get, the more difficult it becomes to adapt some franchises to keep the design consistent. It’s a shame they didn’t keep a more stylized look, but the upcoming
