‘Stargirl’ May Have Just Set Up Its Big Bad for Season 3

The third season of Stargirl just recently began production after scoring an early renewal ahead of its second season premiere. Since, we’ve seen the return of Eclipso, who has abused the Justice Society of America’s member’s insecurities and fears to slowly break them. While the JSA is still struggling to take down their current threat, it seems that the most recent episode may have given us a bit of hint as to who next season’s big bad could be, and its even more obscure than their previous foes.

Filmkritik - "Stargirl": Der Trend geht zur Heldin - Wiener Zeitung Online

Courtney and Pat set off to find Jenny, the daughter of the Green Lantern. Their travel leads them to Civic City, the home of the first Justice Society of Amerca headquarters. There they found papers leading them to the Helix Institue among her things, which is a youth rehabilitation facility located. Jenny seemingly set out to find her brother Todd there. The name already might have some DC fan’s attention but it’ll get cemented when head nurse, Louise Love, calls Mister Bones to inform him that Todd has a sister, and she came looking for him.

Mister Bones is one of six children raised by Benjamin Love, who secretly injected pregnant women with a serum that would genetically alter their children. They would become Penny Dreadful, Kritter, Baby Boom, Tao Jones, Arak Wind-Walker, and the previously mentioned leader. Together they would form a supervillain group known as Helix. There’s also the story that seemingly seems abandoned in Stargirl is Yolanda’s origin, whose mother was one of Benjamin Loves test subjects.

It does seem that the team could see a bit of a revamp, as they were originally foes of Infinity Inc, a young group of heroes that are basically Stargirls current JSA. Mister Bones could be running the show alongside Louise Love, and testing on and maybe even recruiting young metahumans for a new and reimagined Helix. We shouldn’t expect Stargirl to revisit Helix this season, as they’ve got their hands full enough with Eclipso. Yet, this would leave Jennifer’s quest to find her brother unfinished, and save it for next season as Helix will definitely seemed to take an interest in her.

  • Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, and Anna Torv Spotted in New ‘The Last of Us’ Set Video

Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, and Anna Torv Spotted in New ‘The Last of Us’ Set Video

We’ve gotten quite a few teases of The Last of Us set throughout the last few weeks. The HBO team has gone to a lot of lengths to bring the post-apocalypse world together that perfectly reflects the original game series. After various set photos of overgrown vehicles hitting the web, we finally got a video that offers our first look at the series cast filming. The photos are from the same location and feature Pedro Pascal‘s Joel, Bella Ramsey‘s Ellie, and Anna Torv‘s Tess. Twitter user @KeiraNystrom shared the video shot in Edmonton.

The same user also shared a set photo that gives us a better look at the main cast in some very familiar costumes. They went all out to bring their game designs to live-action and seeing them surrounded by a post-apocalypse seems quite fitting.

Curiously, the first official picture we got from the pair featured these two in the same outfit. It’s unclear where exactly this takes place but our first look didn’t feature Tess, who’s an important character in the earlier part of the original game. Her inclusion also highlights that this set might indeed be used for their short travel through Boston in the game. So far, the only thing we haven’t seen yet are the fungal-possessed zombies. They usually don’t stick around during daylight. As such, they’ll utilize this fact to keep them for indoor shots while also saving their budget to make the effects look better in the darker interiors.

  • Joe Russo Talks Rumored New Marvel Studios Deal and ScarJo Lawsuit

Joe Russo Talks Rumored New Marvel Studios Deal and ScarJo Lawsuit

The COVID-19 pandemic not only saw the upheaval of our everyday lives but also big industries like Hollywood. There’s no better example of the change the industry is going through than Scarlett Johansson‘s recent lawsuit against Disney, which she filed in light of Black Widow premiering on Disney+.

While that lawsuit has since been resolved, it wasn’t without impact. A new deal between the Russos and Marvel Studios reported by the Wall Street Journal was allegedly put on hold due to the then-worrying circumstances of the lawsuit. In an interview with Variety, Joe Russo addressed that alleged deal, hinting that the sibling directors may still be in talks with Marvel studios:

It would be inappropriate for us to comment on a deal if we were in the middle of it.

Russo also addressed the lawsuit itself and shared his thoughts on the current state of the film industry.

I’m glad that the lawsuit’s resolved. I do think it was indicative of significant change that’s been happening. The resolution speaks volumes about the respect for artists moving forward in this changing landscape.

  • Lynda Carter Teases ‘Wonder Woman 3’ and Potential Return

Lynda Carter Teases ‘Wonder Woman 3’ and Potential Return

Wonder Woman 1984 was one of those films that got hit the hardest by the ongoing pandemic, shifting multiple release dates before becoming the first simultaneous release for HBO Max. It gave us a new look at the popular heroine while also paying tribute to the franchise’s past, as the film teased the legendary Amazon warrior, Asteria. We’d see Diana don her armor to face Cheetah in the finale before Lynda Carter would cameo as the famous warrior. She doesn’t appear until the end of the film as a great nod to fans of the original Wonder Woman series.

Her inclusion also opened up the possibility of her story continuing in the fast-tracked third entry of the franchise. In a recent interview, Lynda Carter teased director Patty Jenkin’s vision for the next installment and potentially her involvement.

Its called love is human and divine, and I think that is what we see in each other, bringing it full circle back here to your question. That is what you see, and what I see in Gal’s performance, in Pattys vision. Patty, Patty Jenkins for her Wonder Woman 1, Wonder Woman 2, and what her vision will be for Wonder Woman 3, which will be full of surprises and things that I can never reveal. Things I dont know actually, ’cause she never tells!

    Lynda Carter

Could we see the return of Carters Asteria? Perhaps the sequel will see her fighting alongside Gadot’s Diana Prince. Fans are eager to see what director Patty Jenkins has in store for Diana’s next solo outing. After being away from Themyscira, it may be time for her to return and face her destiny. Either way, we’re sure she’ll bring her A-game for what could be her final film in the Wonder Woman franchise.

  • ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Sequel’s Title May Have Leaked

‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Sequel’s Title May Have Leaked

It looks like the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘s subtitle may have accidentally leaked online. The sequel to the 2018 animated hit has been quite the mystery outside of the casting of Issa Rae as Spider-Woman and Jake Johnson‘s return as Peter B. Parker. It seems that one of the film’s CFX supervisors, Simon Corbaux, may have accidentally leaked the title. In his work with Sony Pictures Imageworks, he’s listed on working the first Into the Spider-Verse film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and his latest addition: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The subtitle certainly works for the franchise, as they won’t drop Spider-Man or Spider-Verse. So, as the franchise continues to grow Miles Morales might have gone into, across, through, without, and what else they could think of regarding the Spider-Verse. Of course, the wording also hints at the story exploring multiple dimensions featuring the popular wall-crawler. The first ended on quite the cliffhanger that might get extended with this film. Here’s hoping they’ll also embrace the various incarnations like the famous Japanese Spider-Man.

There’s a lot of potential in this sequel, as there have been quite a few versions of the famous webhead throughout his tenure in comics. Back in February, we heard that The Dot might become the film’s main antagonist. His powers would make sense and he could even become the source for why our favorite cast of Spider-People gets cast out into the multiverse. Here’s hoping with the 2022 release, the wait won’t be too long.

  • New ‘Hawkeye’ Trailer Confirms Linda Cardellini’s Return

New ‘Hawkeye’ Trailer Confirms Linda Cardellini’s Return

Ever since the first trailer for Hawkeye dropped, fans noticed that someone important in Clint Barton’s family was missing. As he commits to keeping his new protégé Kate Bishop out of trouble, he ends up facing the challenge of getting home before Christmas. We see his kids but Linda Cardellini‘s Laura Barton was noticeably absent. Of course, it led to a lot of speculation that she may not get featured in the series, but Disney+ had other plans and the latest trailer finally confirmed her appearance.

    Image

The new trailer doesn’t reveal too much new, but it’s great to get a confirmation on her return. She likely won’t have a large role in the series, but might likely appear in the beginning and end. It’ll be interesting to explore their relationship as Jeremy Renner‘s Barton faces this new challenge. The earliest concept art teased Kate on the Barton farm some time ago, but it’s uncertain if the new direction of this Die Hard-inspired Disney+ series.

The upcoming series will explore Marvel Cinematic Universe’s street-level heroes. It seems like the most down-to-earth take on a story, especially with poor Clint getting beat up quite a bit in the trailer. It’ll join other Marvel Studios dramas with six episodes planned. The premiere will consist of two episodes, which is perfect for it to end ahead of The Book of Boba Fett‘s premiere in December. It’s going to be a busy fourth quarter ahead of us.

  • First Look at ‘Batwoman’s Killer Croc

First Look at ‘Batwoman’s Killer Croc

Batwoman’s third season will soon make its return to the CW and she won’t be alone. We learned in August that Bridget Regan would take on the role of Poison Ivy. Luckily, it seems she won’t be the only classic member of Batman’s rogue’s gallery, as Entertainment Weekly has unveiled the series adaptation of Killer Croc. He’ll make his debut in the episode “Loose Tooth” set to premiere this Wednesday. Yet, it’s not the one you would think it is.

Ryan Wilder will not face off against Waylon Jones, but an innocent teenager named Stephen transformed into the iconic villain due to an infected tooth he found. The character description also highlights that Stephen’s time as the Croc may change his future.

As the bodies pile up, Batwoman will be forced to decide if there’s enough of Steven left in this new Croc to reason with, or if he’s already too far gone.

    Batwoman

Killer Croc is one of the more physical villains in the Batman universe. Ryan Wilder and the Bat-family will most certainly have their hands full dealing with the reptile, as they wrestle how to save the innocent kid. The new Batwoman Javicia Leslie shared her excitement for facing off against the famous rogue member.

They hired an actor who was huge in real life. He’s like a really big guy, so we didn’t have to fake anything with special effects. So, the stunts were fun and he was creepy. Special effects did such a good job with his makeup and mask. So, he was really scary-looking. It felt like one of those nostalgic episodes that is like Batman meets Stranger Things.

    Javicia Leslie

His design is quite a curious take on the character. While the mask teases a wide gaping mouth, the first image reveals that the teeth on his cheeks don’t move. The CW works with quite a limited budget and they still focus on getting out superhero story after superhero story. The upcoming episode will give us a clearer picture of Stephen’s future as Killer Croc is a one-and-done, or the infection leaves deep scars.

  • REVIEW: ‘Doom Patrol’ Episode 6 – “1917 Patrol”

REVIEW: ‘Doom Patrol’ Episode 6 – “1917 Patrol”

By going backward, Doom Patrol’s “1917 Patrol” manages to move the season’s plot forward significantly. The episode filled in much of the blank space the first half of Season 3 created surrounding Laura DeMille and the Sisterhood of Dada and in doing so actually gave Doom Patrol what feels like a concrete and cohesive storyline.

Episode 6 sends Rita back in time to 1917 to explore the origins of the Sisterhood of Dada, which is helpful and welcome after the vague and mysterious way we met them last episode. Rita forgets who she is like we saw Laura do after using the time machine, but ends up at the Bureau of Normalcy which houses a small number of metahumans. Now known as Bendy, Rita finds a happy life working in the mailroom and connecting with the other metas.

The group is mostly the same as we saw in the last episode, including Fog, Frenzy and Quiz. Additionally, Laura is a part of the Sisterhood, as well as a man named Malcolm who can turn invisible and has a birdcage and canary for a heart. Rita/Bendy finds a quick home in the Sisterhood, who gather in a place created by Fog to express themselves and be creative—but it’s essentially a speakeasy. In particular, she grows quite fond of Malcolm. The Sisterhood certainly does not come across as any kind of threat yet, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens between 1917 and the present day to lead us to their confrontation of the Doom Patrol and talk of “The Eternal Flagellation.”

“1917 Patrol” does a phenomenal job in developing both Laura and Rita. While we’ve spent time with an amnesiac Laura and normal Rita, we haven’t had much development for half of a season. Ironically, this episode ramps up the two characters by mind-wiping Rita and putting Laura in a place where she knows who she is. Laura is a recruiter at the Bureau who classifies metas as either weapons or not weapons. She clearly has a soft spot for some—and she is a shapeshifter herself—as she protects the Sisterhood from being used as soldiers. On the job, she is indifferent, professional, and rigid, but once with the Sisterhood she comes alive like the rest of them. Rita, without her memories, is a much more confident and secure person who easily finds a family and a sense of belonging with the quirky group.

The episode seems very intentional in how it uses this episode to frame the two women, and it pulls off probably several episodes-worth of character development in just this one. We now have an actual grasp on who Laura is and she is much more of her own person rather than just filler at Doom Manor now. Rita feels reinvented but is actually just being interpreted in terms of who she would be if she was not riddled with shame and insecurity. We spend a lot of time with both in the past after we spent a decent amount of time with them together in the present day—their individual growth is intertwined with their chronologically messy relationship, and the ultimate payoff of that, if this continues to be executed well, could be huge.

Elsewhere in the present-day episode, the other members of the Patrol are handled similarly to how they’ve been dealt with so far this season. They are very separate from one another and are taking stabs at small bits and pieces of their own stories. Some of it feels a bit repetitive, and some of it feels slow—they certainly have not been folded into the newly revealed overarching story yet.

Larry stands up for himself against his son who hates him for leaving the family after his accident. While Larry has normally let his own guilt weigh down his every move, he delivers a solid rebuke and tells his son that he can’t take his fatherhood from him. Cliff is still living in a haze of black-market Parkinson’s drugs, and he is addicted to online gaming, gambling, and girls.

Jane lets Kay go up to the surface to buy her own shoes, and Kay teaches herself how to ride a bike and experiences some joy for once. The other personas are not happy with Jane’s interest in helping Kay grow, and there’s an obvious setup to a bigger referendum on Kay’s trauma on the horizon. Vic is again questioning why he is Cyborg, or why Cyborg is Cyborg, or why Cyborg is Vic—take your pick. This time, though, he’s doing something explicit about it by looking into replacing his technology with synthetic skin.

Episode 6 ends with Laura being ominously and threateningly contacted by the Sisterhood of Dada in the present day. Something has clearly changed from 1917, but like Laura, we are still in the dark. It’s noticeable, though, that Laura is for sure no longer being set up as the obvious and staunchly established adversary of the season. The mysterious but clearly rocky dynamic between her, the Sisterhood, and the Doom Patrol calls into question whether we will even have that kind of villain at all. The lack of that in the past hasn’t been particularly positive, but the seemingly more well-rounded and complex plot might have a fresh take on it.

  • Tom Holland Teases More “Visceral” Fights and Working with Alfred Molina

Tom Holland Teases More “Visceral” Fights and Working with Alfred Molina

The highly anticipated Spider-Man: No Way Home is fast approaching. Fans are clamoring for any information on the secretive third installment of the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man franchise. Sony and Marvel Studios have been keeping mum on the project, but luckily Holland gave an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he teased what is heading our way. He shared his excitement working alongside actor Alfred Molina, who is set to reprise his role as Dr. Otto Octavius or Doc Ock. He’ll reprise the role for the first time since his beloved performance alongside Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in 2004’s Spider-Man 2. He went on to say that:

[He’s] one of my favorite people I’ve ever worked with…It was really fun to watch him see how technology has advanced. When he was making these films, the arms were puppets, and when we did it, they’re all imaginary and CG. It was quite cool to see him relive it, but also relearn it.

    Tom Holland

Holland also teased that No Way Home will feature fight scenes that are “a lot more visceral,” and with “a lot more hand-to-hand combat.” Based on the actor’s comments, it looks like fans can expect to see more creativity in the film’s action sequences than we’ve previously seen with Holland’s Spider-Man. As the trailer teased several adversaries and even Doctor Strange, he’ll have to change up his tactic. A toy leak did tease his new magical webbing which will also add some new flair to his move set once the film releases this December.

  • Tom Holland Calls ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ a Conclusion to the Trilogy

Tom Holland Calls ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ a Conclusion to the Trilogy

Every story has an ending and for actor Tom Holland, Spider-Man: No Way Home will serve as an ending to the trilogy to director Jon Watts‘ trilogy. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Holland recalls what it was like to film No Way Home, revealing that the cast and crew treated it as an end to the franchise. “We were all treating [No Way Home] as the end of a franchise,” he said.

Holland then followed up his comment by suggesting there’s still plenty more of Spider-Man to come, but perhaps with a different vision next time. “I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version,” he explained. “It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy. We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”

Holland has been working on these films for five years now. Over those five years, he has built a close relationship with Watts and his co-stars. While filming on one of his last days on set, Holland became emotional alongside Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. “We’ve done every single film, every single press tour,” he stated. “So this one scene, [we didn’t know] if this would be the last time [we were all working together.] [It] was heartbreaking but also really exciting because we’re all moving into the next chapter of our careers.”

Holland’s comments, of course, should not be too surprising. Watts has already been announced as the director for Fantastic 4 for Marvel Studios, an indication his time with Spider-Man is done. As for Spider-Man, his story can continue with a new director. For now, though, we’ll have to see what will happen.

Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on Dec. 17.
