EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Didn’t Allow ‘Hit-Monkey’ To Use Bullseye In Series

Marvel TV’s last bastion Hit-Monkey premieres tomorrow on Hulu, ending the department’s near-decade-long stint with a brutal and violent spectacle. The show is filled with lots of gore, emotion, and features a handful of Marvel characters that some comic readers may recognize. Characters like Silver Samurai, Fat Cobra, and Lady Bullseye all make memorable appearances all throughout.

One character that almost made the cut, however, was the original Bullseye. Once again, the old adage of corporate mandates hijacking creative visions took place, prohibiting showrunners Will Speck and Josh Gordon from using the fabled Daredevil character. In our exclusive interview with the directing duo, they said:

Yes, Bullseye. Bullseye was in the original issues of Hit-Monkey and that was who we originally thought we would use but for various reasons, we couldn’t. But Marvel offered us Lady Bullseye instead and we thought, ‘Wow. That’s so much more interesting since she’s a character we haven’t seen much of yet.’ We were thrilled that we got that pivot.

These things happen a lot with Marvel TV. Jeph Loeb and co. want to use a character for their shows but the powers that be at Marvel Studios veto it for reasons related to their own plans for the characters at hand.

In this instance, this could’ve been a case of Marvel not wanting to touch anything that had to do with the Netflix clause that prohibited the use of characters from their shows for an X amount of years, though the production timeline might say otherwise. Interestingly, this could also very well be a mandate from Marvel Studios as Kevin Feige begins to get his hands on some of Marvel’s most famous street-level characters.

  • Rumor: Marvel Studios Developing ‘Daredevil’ Solo Project

Rumor: Marvel Studios Developing ‘Daredevil’ Solo Project

With Charlie Cox’s return to the role of Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home just over a month away, a leaked casting grid seems to indicate that Marvel Studios is in the earliest stages of developing a solo project for the character.

The grid, shown above, gives no additional information about the potential project but is in line with early grids for other projects. Cox, who is also rumored for a multi-episode arc in 2022’s Marvel Studios’ streaming series She-Hulk, has denied any knowledge about a potential return, but has been a little more forthcoming in recent weeks about what he’d like to see if he were to return as Murdock/Daredevil, saying he’d like to see a “reimagined, upgraded version of the character” in any potential revival/reboot.

With rumors also pointing to Vincent D’Onofrio returning soon as Wilson Fisk in the Marvel Studios’ streaming series Hawkeye, fans are both thrilled and left to debate if these characters will pick up where they left off in the Netflix series or if we’ll be getting all-new, all-different versions of the characters with the same actors. In the cases of Cox and D’Onofrio, it’s hard to imagine replacing one without the other given the depth of the onscreen dynamic they developed over the 3 season of Netflix’s Daredevil. D’Onofrio recently indicated that if he were to return in the role, he’d want to eventually take on Spider-Man, giving fans hope that they might see the Kingpin, who debuted as a Spidey villain, return to his comic book roots.

Unfortunately, the leaked screenshot doesn’t indicate if the Daredevil project is a film or intended for Disney Plus, nor does it give any timeline as to when we might expect it. With so many projects already in development, it might be a while before we get any concrete updates on this one. In the meantime, we can all start imagining what that upgraded version of the character might look like.

  • Vincent D’Onofrio Wants Kingpin to Square Up with Spider-Man in the MCU

Vincent D’Onofrio Wants Kingpin to Square Up with Spider-Man in the MCU

Vincent D’Onofrio’s work as Wilson Fisk on the Netflix streaming series Daredevil is held in the highest of regards by Marvel fans, with many believing his Kingpin sits firmly within the top tier of modern live-action Marvel villains. Rumors of D’Onofrio’s return to the role have been rampant for months and with Hawkeye, the project at the center of those rumors, set to stream soon, fans are becoming anxious to see if the Emmy-nominated actor will indeed reprise the role in the MCU.

D’Onofrio recently talked with Jake’s Takes and when asked what Marvel hero he’d like to see Fisk go toe-to-toe with should he return to the role, the actor had a reply at the ready saying, “it definitely has to be Spider-Man. One day…I’m hoping. We’ll see if they ask me to do it.” Obviously a well-read man, D’Onofrio continued, “Kingpin lived in a world of Punisher, Daredevil and Spider-Man so that would be the one.” Fisk, of course, debuted in 1967 in issue #50 of The Amazing Spider-Man. Over the years and especially at the hands of Frank Miller, the character evolved from a stereotypical crime lord into the monstrous threat and the archenemy of Daredevil.

It’s those connections to the Daredevil comics, specifically to the character of Maya Lopez/Echo, that have fans on (king)pins and needles as to whether D’Onofrio will return as Fisk in Hawkeye. In the comics, Fisk raised Lopez as his own daughter after killing her father. With the character of Lopez, played by Alaqua Cox, getting her own spinoff series, sentiment is growing that Fisk MUST play a part in her life and that D’Onofrio is the man for the job.

Watch the entire video interview below and watch D’Onofrio reprise the role of Kingpin (hopefully) in Hawkeye, which begins streaming on Disney Plus with a 2-episode premiere on November 24th.

  • DAREDEVIL: What Could A Hypothetical Game Look Like?

DAREDEVIL: What Could A Hypothetical Game Look Like?

There’s a new AAA Marvel game being developed by industry legend Amy Hennig, whose previous work includes the Uncharted franchise, which she created, and Legacy of Kain, which she wrote, and a lot of fans seem to think it’s a Daredevil game. The reason why is because not too long ago, a rumor surfaced saying that Wolverine and Daredevil games were in the works. And because it’s been confirmed that there is a Wolverine game happening, fans think there might be credence to the Daredevil side of the rumor.

Let’s assume there is a Daredevil game and it happens to be the “narrative-driven, blockbuster, action-adventure” that Hennig described, just what kind of game does Daredevil need to have? What kind of game could it be?

Looking at the numerous video games based on comic books within the past decade paints a picture of what it could look like. The Arkham and Spider-Man games have their open-world and traversal. Square Enix’s Avengers has its co-op feature with multiple characters and builds to choose from. The new Guardians of the Galaxy game has a choice-driven narrative. The upcoming Midnight Suns is a deck builder. The Batman Telltale games are point-and-click detective adventures.

The most obvious one that comes to mind is the Arkham series. Given how that game pretty much serves as the gold standard for your defacto open-world game that has an emphasis on button-mashing combat makes it a very canvass to imagine Daredevil in. After all, Daredevil and Batman do share a lot of similarities; both were written by Frank Miller (but Miller turned Daredevil into Batman first a few years before he wrote Year One); both are trained ninjas; both rely on their physical acrobatic prowess; both use some form of radar sense (Bruce has his tech while Matt has his ears).

Combat-wise, Daredevil could certainly use some cues from the Arkham series but a system that automatically lets you snap to an enemy by mashing feels incredibly shallow and boring. The 2018 Spider-Man game really does a good job of taking the free-flowing fluidity of the Arkham-style combat while keeping the skill ceiling somewhat high. You also don’t want Daredevil to be a battle tank that runs over goons like Batman but you want a system that shows his graceful precision in taking down squads of enemies. You want his skills to have their limits and not feel unstoppable every step of the way.

A lot of people forget just how much of a traversal-heavy character Daredevil is. He’s a skyscraping acrobat that goes on joyrides with Spider-Man using his billy club. The 2018 Spider-Man has one of the most satisfying open-world experiences thanks to its freeing traversal system. While Daredevil is no Spider-Man when it comes to zipping through New York at 50 mph, you want a game that lets players use the billy club to explore to verticalities of whatever location he’s in. Amy Hennig‘s work on the Uncharted franchise could lead to some really robust platforming and traversal mechanics.

Thematically, a Daredevil game would benefit from some form of morality system. Be it one that changes the course of the story or one that has smaller changes in gameplay. Part of any Daredevil story are themes of faith and ethics so it’s a mechanic that would fit like a glove for any potential game. Should you beat this goon to a pulp or knock him out to get information? Should you stop Bullseye from assassinating a congressman or save the civilians he has hostage? Dilemmas like this should inform what happens to Daredevil.

Daredevil is a creature of the night, trained in the art of ninjutsu. So as a huge stealth game fan, I definitely would like to see a really effective stealth component in it. I know stealth mechanics aren’t a lot of people’s cup of tea but I especially love it when games offer the stealthy sneaky route as the more efficient solution. Games like The Last of Us had great stealth aspects that when utilized, tipped the scales to your advantage, as opposed to Ramboing your way out of an infected encounter and having your ass handed to you. You don’t have to sneak but sneaking makes everything a lot smoother.

Quite possibly the most important aspect is Daredevil’s signature radar sense. It’s his defining ability and a game that doesn’t take advantage of it would be a huge blunder. It’s a feature that should be incorporated in every aspect of the game including combat. It’s a mechanic so crucial unto itself that mechanics akin to the radar sense have served as cornerstones of certain games (LA Noire famously incorporated an interrogation mechanic that had players read whether a character was lying or not based on their facial expressions).

Having a radar sense mechanic leads to more varying gameplay opportunities such as branching dialogue trees and the like. It’s not unreasonable for a Daredevil fan to expect gameplay incorporating Matt Murdock’s lawyer life. Imagine a minigame where the player gets to work a witness on the stand during a high-profile court case by using your radar sense and other investigative abilities. It’s a no-brainer.

As far as the story goes, Hennig teased a completely new original story and take on the Marvel Universe. It’s hard to tell what she could mean by that but if I had to imagine a Daredevil story that was a completely new take, I would start with the setting. A Daredevil game set in Asia that looks visually looks like Ghost of Tsushima sounds too good not to imagine; picture Daredevil quietly infiltrating a Yakuza highrise in Madripoor. A story where Daredevil has to deal with a lot of occult Hand mysticism also sounds good; have him deal with the influence of the Beast as the player makes more corrupt choices.

Whatever the case is, whether it’s a Daredevil game or not, the idea that an industry legend like Hennig is working on a big Marvel game is more than exciting. We’re finally in an age where we have current-gen video games based on comic books that we can be proud of. For the longest time, it felt like the opposite.

    But please be Daredevil.

  • Charlie Cox on Possible ‘DD’ Return: “A reimagined, upgraded version of the character”

Charlie Cox on Possible ‘DD’ Return: “A reimagined, upgraded version of the character”

Charlie Cox continues to be a gentleman as the press endlessly asks him about his return to his famed take on Daredevil while promoting his new show Kin. In an interview with Sirius XM, Charlie was unsurprisingly quizzed about a hypothetical return to the role, to which he responded interestingly:

What happens in the comics is a writer and an artist will team up for a run of a comic, so they’ll do 10 issues, 20 issues. If there was an opportunity for me to come back as Daredevil, whatever that would look like, I imagine it would be a reimagining of the character and the show. If they choose me to do it, there are going to be some elements that are of course the same. But I imagine it would be like the upgraded version of the character.

It’s no secret that while the Daredevil Netflix show was excellent in quality, it had certain limitations with how they could push certain aspects of the character such as the suit and the radar sense. In addition to Spider-Man: No Way Home, Daredevil is rumored to appear in Disney+ shows Hawkeye, Echo, and She-Hulk, all of which have substantially larger budgets. Charlie openly talking about his hypothetical, upgraded return is indicative of the talks he’s had with Marvel Studios about a Daredevil reprisal.

  • ‘HAWKEYE’ May Reboot a ‘DAREDEVIL’ Season 1 Premise

‘HAWKEYE’ May Reboot a ‘DAREDEVIL’ Season 1 Premise

One big question fans have as they anticipate the return of familiar Marvel TV characters like Daredevil and Kingpin is: “Will they be soft rebooted for the proper MCU?” Both characters have an elaborate backstory inclusive and exclusive of each other in the three seasons of Daredevil we got and a good amount of fans want those stories intact when we see them butt heads with movie characters.

While we won’t get a clear answer until we see these stories onscreen, Avengers producer Trinh Tran had some very interesting things to say about Hawkeye’s premise. In an excerpt from TV Guide, her quote reads:

The six episodes take place after the events of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, when the five-year disappearance of half the population – including Clint’s wife and kids – was reversed. “The city has, in many ways, recuperated and continued thriving. But the same can’t be said for all its citizens.

Let’s put things into perspective. That premise sounds uncannily the same as the first season of Daredevil, where the destruction from the first Avengers film left New York and Hell’s Kitchen in an unfortunate spot. All that damage to the economy and infrastructure essentially allowed people like Fisk to take over people’s lives.

Now, this isn’t a novel idea. Most transitional stories about a status quo change deal with some sort of fallout from that said change. Hawkeye dealing with the economic effects of the snap on a micro-level makes a ton of sense. But what makes this premise really fascinating is the reported involvement of Kingpin in the show. Vincent D’Onofrio is said to make his proper MCU debut at some point in the first season, presumably the big bad pulling the strings. With that and Tran‘s premise in mind, it seems like Marvel Studios is doing a full retread of what the first season of Daredevil did, with the OG villain behind the scheme.

This feels like an indication of a soft reboot in some way in that it’s Marvel Studios cherry-picking the good ideas from the Netflix shows and spinning them in a new way that involves the larger universe. We know that Echo is going to be in Hawkeye and given her ties to Kingpin, the rumors regarding D’Onofrio’s inclusion in her upcoming Disney+ show make sense. It’s also sound to think that Daredevil may appear in that show as well, in addition to his rumored stint in She-Hulk. Looking at the big picture, there’s a through-line that links all these street-level stories that a soft reboot would serve perfectly.

“Kingpin’s gonna kingpin,” you might say. Just because Marvel Studios is redoing the Daredevil Season 1 premise doesn’t mean it’s a reboot. For all we know, Kingpin could just be redoing what he did all those years ago after the Battle of New York. While that’s certainly a possibility, the premise of him getting out of jail after his definite imprisonment in Season 3 and reattempting the thing that jailed him in Season 1 in a show where there are Avengers around to stop him sounds too reckless for a twice-convicted felon.

    But who knows?

  • UPDATE: Deborah Ann Woll Denies Photos With Kirsten Dunst In Midst of Reported ‘NO WAY HOME’ Reshoots

UPDATE: Deborah Ann Woll Denies Photos With Kirsten Dunst In Midst of Reported ‘NO WAY HOME’ Reshoots

UPDATE: It looks like it may be a look-a-like of Deborah Ann Woll, as the actress took to Twitter to state that it isn’t her in the photos shared by @Peli_Comic.

Additional photography for Spider-Man: No Way Home is ongoing in Los Angeles as fans are still anxiously awaiting their first look at the upcoming film. Rumors and plot leaks have run rampant over the last year and all point to the film including characters from not only previous live-action Spider-Man franchises but also Netflix’s Daredevil. Today, a fan may have caught a glimpse of those worlds colliding as actresses Kirsten Dunst, who played Mary Jane Watson in the Sam Raimi trilogy, and Deborah Ann Woll, who played Karen Page in Daredevil, were spotted together in Los Angeles.

The photos, shared by Twitter user @MaguireDunst, seem to have caught the two actresses out for a walk together. It could just be a coincidence that the two are out together in Los Angeles, but it could also point to even more characters joining the cast. Dunst has been rumored to be a part of the film for months now and a recent IMDB listing indicated that a personal costumer for the actress was part of the crew. Woll, on the other hand, has not previously been associated with the Spidey threequel, but with Cox rumored to be working as Peter Parker’s lawyer in the film, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Karen Page make an appearance given that she was part of the Nelson, Murdock and Page law firm established in the final episode of Season 3 of Daredevil.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’ Continues Marvel’s Exploration of Father Issues

‘Shang-Chi’ Continues Marvel’s Exploration of Father Issues

Finally, the trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings dropped. We got our first look at Simu Liu in the titular role, as he tries to live his own life out of the shadow cast by his father Tony Leung‘s Wenwu. After a ten-year rest, his father calls upon him to take over the leadership of the Ten Rings. His return into the world he tried to leave behind will re-awaken some dormant issues between him and his estranged parent. Now, producer Jonathan Schwartz highlighted the focus

The core of Shang-Chi’s arc in the comics is really a family drama. That was something that Destin keyed into really early on in our conversations, the idea of taking this broken family and this really dark, even abusive family background and seeing what that does to a child over time.

This story isn’t the first time that Marvel Studios has explored a dark and abusive relationship like this. Avengers: Infinity War put quite a bit of focus on how Thanos turned his adoptive daughter into the perfect killing machine. Of course, it pushed her away from him, as his warped view of the world left a deep rift between them. Let’s not even get started on his abusive behavior towards Nebula and how that even destroyed any chance for his daughters to bond.

Avengers: Endgame fan theories that could be true

Now, Thanos wasn’t the only father leaving a long-lasting scar on his child. Tony Stark’s journey was haunted by the sins of his father early on. The second entry in his trilogy highlighted that very legacy weighing down on Stark, who translated that into some rather destructive behaviors. Learning to overcome his issues allowed him to embrace his mentor role for Peter Parker. Now, unlike Gamora, he was able to make amends with his father in Avengers: Endgame even if Howard Stark had no idea he was talking to his son from the future. Still, it offered a more positive ending for Tony to take away and push him towards his final decision.

Marvel Studios wasn’t the only live-action adaptation in the Marvel family exploring family ties as a core anchor for their storytelling. Marvel TV gave us the ever-expanding family in Agents of SHIELD. The relationship between Phil Coulson and Daisy Johnson, especially during the second season while being hunted by her biological father. We witnessed her even sacrifice a potential relationship with him to ensure he doesn’t have to live with the nightmares of his own actions driven by desperation to find her. Daisy carried that weight with her with Coulson taking on that role she was missing.

What Happened To Daredevil's Dad? This 'Defenders' Moment Brought Up The Past

Now, an episode that hit home with me was in Daredevil. The close relationship between the Murdocks before tragedy would eventually separate them was laid out in just a few episodes. We see a father struggling to meet ends meet by doing the only thing he believes he can do. The weight of trying to take care of his son and ensure he doesn’t repeat his mistakes will tear at anyone’s heartstrings. In a way, the story of parentage and how it defines the next generation will continue carrying an important role in the MCU, as younger heroes take over legacy titles. It looks like Shang-Chi is kicking off a new generation of heroes with father issues.

  • How ‘ECHO’ Can Bring Back Marvel’s Netflix Characters

How ‘ECHO’ Can Bring Back Marvel’s Netflix Characters

The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is ever-expanding, and Marvel Studios continues to keep fans on their toes when it comes to new projects. You would think we’d be ready for anything after announcements for movies like Eternals and Shang-Chi, but most of us were shocked once more when Variety broke the news of an unexpected Hawkeye spin-off earlier this week. The Disney+ series will center around the character Maya Lopez (a.k.a. Echo), who is set to be portrayed by newcomer Alaqua Cox in the Avenging Archer’s show. While the character’s name is probably unfamiliar to many, obsessive comic readers like myself will know it actually bares more in connection to the cult classic Marvel/Netflix shows than it does to the current MCU. In fact, it almost seems to me that a project focused on Echo’s story would be the perfect place for those two franchises, which may or may not be the same, to finally converge on a large scale. So, read on Macduff, and allow me to explain how Echo could bring back some of your favorite players from the era of Defenders.

    Connecting Echo to Netflix

A deaf Native American woman, Echo is traditionally depicted in the comics as an assassin with strong ties to Marvel’s criminal underworld. Actually, she was essentially born into it, because her father was an active enforcer for the Kingpin while she was still a little girl. And uh, yes, it was that Kingpin. Wilson Fisk (who Daredevil fans will most definitely remember as the bane of Matt Murdock’s existence for two-out-of-three seasons) eventually put out a hit on Lopez’s dad, which led to him dying tragically in her arms and imprinting his bloody handprint on her face. The malicious Kingpin saw potential in a young Maya and took her in, using her photogenic reflexes and some valuable footage of Bullseye to turn her into one of his best weapons. Many years down the line, he would send her hurtling in the direction of one Matthew Murdock, with her brain having been twisted to believe Daredevil killed her pop. This, of course, backfires for Fisk when Maya falls in love with Matt and learns the truth about her origin. Her relationship with Murdock doesn’t work out, but she does find a sense of liberation by cutting off ties with Kingpin.

Suffice to say, Lopez was already steeped heavily in the world of Daredevil before she was even able to make connections to Hawkeye or the bigger Marvel Universe. When she finally does start mingling with the Avengers, it still sends her straight back to Daredevil’s corner of the world. Upon leaving Hell’s Kitchen, Lopez travels to Japan and begins operating against mystical ninja clan The Hand and their leader, fellow former Fisk assassin and Murdock-lover Elektra Natchios. She does so under a new mantle, Ronin, which would eventually be used by Clint Barton as well, and was introduced to the MCU in Avengers: Endgame. That conflict would end with Maya’s death at the hands of Elektra (later revealed to be a Skrull), until her eventual revival by The Hand, something that group is kinda well known for. So, if you’re keeping track at home, that connects Echo to Kingpin, Daredevil, Bullseye, and Elektra before Hawkeye ever puts on her Ronin suit. The enormity of space that the previously-owned-by-Netflix characters take up in Lopez’s personal storylines almost makes one wonder how Echo could exist without using at least some of them. Obviously, Echo’s story will differ in live-action, but I do have some ideas as to how Marvel Studios might use her solo series to honor her comic roots and introduce Marvel’s street-level cast to the mainstream MCU.

Wilson Fisk, Elektra Natchios, and Bullseye in Marvel Studios’ Echo

What we know about the MCU’s take on Echo could be described as very minimal. We know that Maya Lopez will feature in Hawkeye, played by the previously mentioned Alaqua Cox. We also know her father will appear, with the role taken on by veteran actor Zahn McClarnon. This information, combined with exclusive footage from the set of Hawkeye, seems to indicate that Lopez’s father will live much longer into her life span than in the comics. That would make Lopez too old to be potentially manipulated by Kingpin in the same way she was on the page, but it doesn’t mean she can’t end up working for him in a similar manner. When Echo begins, Lopez will presumably already be an assassin or be on the verge of becoming one. Her father will most likely be freshly dead or about to die. With the rights to the Netflix characters back in their pocket, Marvel Studios could pull off a late-stage reveal that Wilson Fisk was behind some of the criminal activity in Hawkeye, including the death of William Lopez.

Echo could then be a revenge story, where Maya goes after Fisk either through his bodyguards or by infiltrating his organization and becoming one of them. Now, if Fisk is going to have an assassin by his side, it might as well be Bullseye. Much like the comics, watching him during combat could lead to Maya becoming a better fighter. She could also slip into Elektra’s role for the classic story in which she is pitted against Bullseye for the position of Kingpin’s top assassin. Speaking of Elektra, she could appear working for Fisk as well. Or, Marvel Studios could use her to re-introduce The Hand properly, making her their leader (as teased in Defenders) and adapting her conflict with Maya from the comics. Whatever the case, it feels apparent that Echo has the potential to be the MCU Daredevil revival so many fans have been clamoring for since its cancellation, and who knows, maybe the Man Without Fear himself could show up at some point. After all, he’s scheduled to make his comeback sooner than later.

  • ‘Hawkeye’ Spin-Off Focused on Echo In Development for Disney+

‘Hawkeye’ Spin-Off Focused on Echo In Development for Disney+

It looks like Marvel Studios is already planning some spin-offs for their major series well in advance. In a recent exclusive by variety, they have unveiled that Marvel Studios is already developing a series that focuses on Echo. The character will be first introduced in the upcoming Hawkeye series. Alaqua Cox has been cast in the role of the deaf Native American, Maya Lopez, who might have a bigger role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward than we first expected. It seems that they also have already found their writers, as Etan Cohen and Emily Cohen are attached. Of course, Marvel Studios will return to produce the series.

Now, this is interesting as it opens up the floodgates to many other characters introduced on Disney+ getting their own series at one point. It also means that Marvel Studios has some big plans for the character. We don’t know how large her role will be in the upcoming Disney+ series. Of course, the knowledge of her spin-off makes us keep an even closer eye once Hawkeye premieres, as we will see how its ending might keep the door open for her story to continue upon.

It’s a great surprise, to say the least, and I cannot wait to see what other spin-offs might be in some form of development moving forward. The MCU will continue to grow from here and it is obvious that a lot of fate has been put into the development of their long-form storytelling.
