  • Netflix’s ‘Locke & Key’ Will End With Season 3

Netflix’s ‘Locke & Key’ Will End With Season 3

Another fan favorite comic book show is coming to an end on Netflix. The streaming service has revealed that the upcoming third season of Locke & Key, a supernatural thriller series based on the IDW comic of the same name, will be the show’s last. However, fans shouldn’t worry about being left on any sort of cliffhanger, as Deadline is reporting the creatives behind the production always planned on finishing the story with a three-season arc.

After the successful launch of Locke & Key‘s first season, showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill were reportedly approached by Netflix with the idea of a complete three-season run. The duo agreed that two more batches of episodes would be enough to tell their story, and from that point conceived the plot of the eight-episode third season to give the series a proper conclusion. They explained to Deadline:

Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion. As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s incredible story exactly the way we wanted. We’re keeping the magical keys, though, for our own personal use.

Statement from Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill

Locke & Key is based on the comic series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, and followed the adventures of the young Locke siblings after their father is murdered under mysterious circumstances. The three children, alongside their mother, move into the family’s ancestral home, which they find to be full of magical keys that may unlock the answers they’re looking for. Unfortunately, their exploits also awaken a powerful demon, who will stop at nothing to steal the keys for himself.

Locke & Key‘s third season does not currently have a release date.

  • Marvel Backtracks on ‘Daredevil’s MCU Connection with Latest Update

Marvel Backtracks on ‘Daredevil’s MCU Connection with Latest Update

Just earlier today, we’ve reported that Marvel’s official website has added a new section called “On Screen Full Report” which details a character’s story from any adaptation. In the case of Matt Murdock’s Daredevil, everyone noticed that not only did it explore the Netflix series’ storyline for Charlie Cox‘s take on the character, but even referenced that his return in Spider-Man: No Way Home took place “sometime later” after the events of Daredevil‘s Season 3. Now, the site has been updated and the MCU connection has been completely removed.

Orginally, the section had a reference to his time after Mysterio had Peter Parker’s identity outed and setting up his future return. It was swiftly followed by the mention of him, Karen and Foggy reforming their original law firm. Now, while that later bit is still included they’ve completely removed the Spider-Man: No Way Home section altogether. On the left you’ll see the original version while on the right the one missing the entire section on his time in the MCU.

It’s unclear what exactly has lead to them choosing to delete it once again, but the update and removing the MCU reference is definitely suspicious. It’s unclear why they’d change it right after publishing it, but the fact that the topic is making the rounds and the team behind it would like to avoid anyone making the connection. We’ll likely have to wait until Murdock’s return in a future project to get a better grasp on what story elements remain from the Netflix series, especially now that it has been added to Disney+.

  • Marvel’s Latest Site Update May Further Hint at ‘Daredevil’s MCU Canonicity

Marvel’s Latest Site Update May Further Hint at ‘Daredevil’s MCU Canonicity

The quest to discover whether or not Marvel Television’s Daredevil series is canon to the MCU has been a long and winding road. The show went from presumably canon during it’s run to losing it once it was canceled by Netflix, and the subsequent folding of the studio that created it. With little to no confirmation from Marvel Studios or the creatives behind the MCU, the question remained up in the air for years. Evidence was conjured up on both sides of the argument to prove their own theories. Then, late last year, Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox reprised their respective roles as Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock in two major MCU projects, opening the doors for speculation wider than ever before.

After the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Marvel website added Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s alternate universe wall-crawlers to their official character index. They were specified as non-MCU characters, and where the only non-MCU characters on the site to have their own “on screen” pages. All major characters officially under the MCU canon have separate tabs profiling their live-action appearances separately from their comic book history. However, there are no such pages for characters in films or television shows produced by a studio that is not Marvel Studios. Even the cast of Agents of SHIELD are reduced to quick video breakdowns. Yet, a recent addition to the site includes Daredevil, along with the rest of his Defenders co-stars, receiving their own “on screen full reports”.

Even more curious, Daredevil’s character page includes a full description of the character’s Netflix history, including all three seasons and his time with the Defenders. Yet, what stands out is that it ends with a sequential paragraph describing his role in No Way Home as happening “sometime later”. As for Fisk’s page, it includes a similar history but does not reference the events of his appearance in Hawkeye, despite using an image from the show as the web page’s header. The information is weirdly non-specific and doesn’t technically confirm anything, as it’s not clear who is updating the Marvel website or if it was some sort of mistake. Disney+ doesn’t help matters by simply grouping the former Netflix shows as The Defenders Saga in the streaming service. For now, it’s just an interesting detail that may give fans a hint at where Daredevil lies in the Sacred Timeline’s history.

  • Baratie Has Been Sighted on Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Set

Baratie Has Been Sighted on Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Set

The team behind Netflix’s One Piece series has been quite busy, as they have been not only filming but also recreating some of the iconic ships from the series. While the Going Merry has gone through the biggest change, most seem quite accurate to their manga counterpart. Luckily, some eagle-eyed passerby have noticed another iconic ship from the series in the distance, the Baratie.

While we don’t get a close look, that’s definitely the famous fish mouth of the Baratie. The shape of the ship is a bit different from Eiichiro Oda‘s design, as it does have more ship-like qualities in its base structure. Yet, they could still add on to build the rest of the ship. The mouth being open as it is may even tease the little battleship making its way out.

Zeff’s famous ocean-going restaurant is the main location for the Baratie Arc. While most of the stories take place on islands throughout the manga, Luffy’s fight against Don Krieg took place on the boat and the shipwreck surrounding it. Given his weakness of easily drowning once he’s in sea water, it made for an intense backdrop against one of the strongest foes he’s ever taken on.

Plus, this ship is also famously where Sanji joined, as he was Zeff’s adoptive son and learned his iconic kicking techniques from him. Taz Skylar, who will take on the role of the character, has already started production not too long ago as they seemingly were skipping to Loguetown in their production. If they are still working on the ship, it may be one of the last sequences they film. Especially if you consider that most of it takes place on the water, it may be the most difficult project to tackle.

  • New ‘One Piece’ Set Photos Offer Best Look Yet at Going Merry’s Redesign

New ‘One Piece’ Set Photos Offer Best Look Yet at Going Merry’s Redesign

There’s always some kind of change we have to consider when translating a medium into another. It’s one of the reasons there were some nervous about the live-action adaptation of their favorite anime. Yet, it also opens up the possibility to expand or build upon new elements, especially in ambitious projects like Netflix’s One Piece adaptation. We’ve gotten a tease in the past from set photos that some classic designs will get adapted, and a new look at the Going Merry confirmed it.

While the first ship to be revealed was a classically designed Going Merry, the Straw Hats classic ship. It was in the early days before they started production but a new look at the ship revealed some surprising changes, such as the goat figurehead seemingly screaming its way through the East Blue Saga. Some more set photos shared by @OP_Netflix_Fan has unveiled the best look yet and the Merry is definitely keeping its mouth open for the upcoming live-action adaptation.

There’s a lot of added detail to the ship, especially with the side arms that connect to the ship. The head with a constantly open mouth is certainly a curious direction, but they also added some more realistic ears to the design. It would be funny to find out the inspiration for the ship head was a sheep that just constantly shouted at the builders. Still, it’s a different experience seeing it on the set and then in the series. So, we’ll see how it looks once it releases on Netflix.

  • ‘Detroit’s Kathryn Bigelow Returns to Direct David Koepp’s ‘Aurora’ for Netflix

‘Detroit’s Kathryn Bigelow Returns to Direct David Koepp’s ‘Aurora’ for Netflix

Kathryn Bigelow, the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director has been on hiatus since her work on the 2017 drama Detroit. Now, she is set to make her return to tackle an adaptation of David Koepp‘s Aurora for Netflix. Koepp was the screenwriter behind countless blockbuster projects such as Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, Jurassic Park and many more. He will also return to write the screenplay for this project, which sees Greg Shapiro and Gavin Polone in producing roles. They have worked with the writer for quite some time, and also have a history with Bigelow since her work on Stir of Echoes and Secret Windows.

The story explores a solar storm that blackouts the entire world. In this hard time, a divorced mother tries to protect her kid and her estranged brother, who is a wealthy Sillicon Valley CEO. There’s no word if it’ll be a direct adaptation of the story’s themes of people living in a power crisis but it’s not uncommon for changes to happen in translation. The book won’t release until June 7th and has already received praise from Stephen King and screenwriter Scott Frank, the mind behind The Queen’s Gambit.

Further details according to The Hollywood Reporter are that the deal happened over the weekend. It’s likely Bigelow‘s next project and has quite the budget, which is suspected to go beyond $100M. So, Netflix is once again jumping in with all they’ve got to make this project a reality. There’s no set release date currently.

  • First Set Photos of Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Leak Online

First Set Photos of Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Leak Online

While we’ve gotten quite a few set photos from Netflix’s live-action One Piece project, it took quite some time until something leaked online for Avatar: The Last Airbender. The production started last year and has been moving forward at quite the pace. And now, @AvatarNews_ has shared the first set photos with that hint at it potentially being part of the Fire Nation given the architecture and its overall design. They don’t giveaway much and sadly we don’t have a shot of any of the actors on sets in their costumes, but it’s great to finally get a glimpse what they are working on.

It’ll be interesting if more set photos find their way online that offer a closer look at what exactly they are building. The fact they have an entire section of greenscreen highlights this might be the entrance to a palace of some kind. Perhaps the green field will also be replaced, and this is the location where we meet Zuko’s Blue Spirit disguise as he helps the team.

While there are always concerns with live-action adaptations, especially with a franchise that already had a critically panned adaptation, but Netflix is dedicated to these projects. the more they attempt it, the more they learn even if not everything will blow viewers away. Gaming has been seeing an upswing in better adaptations. So, here’s hoping.

  • Robert Rodriguez to Reboot ‘Spy Kids’ for Netflix

Robert Rodriguez to Reboot ‘Spy Kids’ for Netflix

Robert Rodriguez has been happily returning to some of his older franchises, as after reviving The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl with the sequel film We Can Be Heroes, he now sets his eyes on the Spy Kids franchise. Not only is he once again reuniting with Netflix to continue one of his classics, but he will focus on a new generation of Spy Kids, but while the script remains under wraps it’ll be a whole new family of spies.

It’s unclear if we might expect cameos by Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Daryl Sabara, or Alexa Vega in the project. He’s no stranger to seeing the return of veteran actors and we might get some callbacks to the family that kickstarted the original film back in 2001. Skydance Media alongside the rights owner Spyglass Media are on board. The last entry was back in 2011 with Spy Kids: All The Time in the World.

Robert Rodriguez will join the project as a director and also write the project. He just recently finished up work on The Book of Boba Fett and it seems that he’s already preparing for his next project. It’s unclear if he still has plans to return to the Star Wars universe at some point as well, but it seems he’ll have his hands full with rebooting his own franchises.

  • Leaked ‘One Piece’ Set Photos Offers First Look at Loguetown and Teases Gold Roger

Leaked ‘One Piece’ Set Photos Offers First Look at Loguetown and Teases Gold Roger

For a change of pace, we got some more set photos from the upcoming live-action adaptation of One Piece. So far, we’ve only gotten a glimpse of the boats from the production, but it seems we’ve gotten a new glimpse from one of the series’ most iconic locations from the East Blue Saga. Not only is it our first look at their take on Loguetown, but also a hint that this takes place during Gold Roger’s execution.

While there’s no confirmation that this is definitely Loguetown, the signs are the clearest hint. One proudly proclaims “Execution of Gold Roger the Pirate King” while another behind it seemingly states “Marine Hero Garp” and perhaps “Defeats Pirate King” but it’s a bit tough to make out. So, these signs hanging would imply they are currently busy filming the famous execution sequence.

Yet, there’s also a chance that these signs are still hanging there ever since that event, as the death of one of the greatest pirates who started an entire new era would still be felt years later. We recently learned that Taz Skylar and Jacob Romero Gibson joined production, but it’s strange they’d be involved with a flashback sequence. However, more photos have found tehir way online confirming this is Loguetown due to Gold Roger’s execution platform being constructed:

There’s a chance that they probably skipped straight to this episode to have the band together and then also film the execution while they’ve already built the set. Either way, the aesthetic for this town and the fact it’s a giant set as it is continues to show the production value of this project.

  • ‘One Piece’: How Netflix’s East Blue Saga Could Differ From the Manga

‘One Piece’: How Netflix’s East Blue Saga Could Differ From the Manga

We’ve still got quite some time ahead of us until the live-action adaptation of One Piece hits Netflix. The team has been hard at work bringing the manga to life, as we even saw some set photos find their way online. We’ve gotten glimpses at ships being worked on and even a first look at their take on the Marines’ design. They offered our first look at some of the tweaks and changes that will result from the new medium. Of course, it opens the question what else might change and I thought I’d give it a shot to theorize what aspects of the original East Blue Saga that might get adapted from the original manga.

    Nami’s Anime-Inspired Introduction

Just like how the live-action Cowboy Bebop introduced Faye Valentine in its first episode, we can probably expect the same with Emily Rudd‘s Nami. Alvida’s ship was one of the first to be spotted on set, and she was the first to share a photo from the set. Plus, her character arc is at the core of the East Blue Saga, as Arlong technically acts as the “big bad” before they set out to the Grand Line. Her early introduction alongside a potential set-up for the later part of the season would work to also establish a few plot points that you usually see introduced in the pilot episode

Ironically, this wouldn’t the first time that Nami gets an earlier introduction, as it happened in the anime. While in the manga we first meet her in Orange Town, the first animated adaptation took a different approach. We meet her earlier in the story, as she’s looting one of Alvida’s ships. There’s even a chance that we’ll see her lurking in the background in Shells Town, as Luffy makes his way to recruit Zoro and face Captain Morgan. Taking inspiration from the anime would work to switch up the opening of the manga, which was still finding its footing at the time with each island acting like a self-contained story.

    Morgan’s Expanded Role

Speaking of Captain Morgen, I do believe he’ll likely have a bigger role in the live-action adaptation. Not only did we get a glimpse of Garp’s ship, where he was arrested and then fled from, but it’s not uncommon for adaptations to combine characters. Morgan has ties to Kuro and was one of the reasons the former pirate captain was able to pull of his scheme. Yet, he doesn’t really factor into the story after that, but there is one potential role expansion he could get. We later meet a Marine captain named Nezumi during the Arlong Park Arc. It was a new character that pretty much also solidified the corruption within the Marines.

Even after fleeing, Morgan could still be in his uniform with some corrupted soldiers that stuck by his side. Perhaps he tries to find refuge at Arlong Park, where the Fishman uses the opportunity to make use of the fleeing Marine. As Nami wasn’t directly involved with his arc, she might have no idea who he is. So, him arriving and taking her treasure away, forcing her to start over, would fit within story and add an extra layer of connectivity between the East Blue. Plus, we won’t need an additional character introduction while also further fleshing out what was once a one-sided villain.

    Garp’s Increased Role

Garp’s ship being built is a potential tease that we’ll get Coby and Helmeppo’s training arc sprinkled throughout the series. It’s unclear how much time it’ll take up, but there’s a potential to include them as a showcase of the aftermath that the Straw Hats leave in their wake. We get a few more moments with characters otherwise would’ve left behind and see how this pirate crew influences the world around them. Lieutenant “Double Ironfist” Fullbody could even be part of his Marine group that ended up going ahead to the Baratie, which might even work as a little reference early on if Garp shows up in the pilot episode.

We also learn in the manga that he wants Luffy to join the Marines. So, it wouldn’t be too surprising for him to arrive in Windmill Village hoping to recruit him before he goes his pirate ways only to be too late. It isn’t until later that we find out that’s the only reason he’s in the East Blue to begin with, as everyone is confused why he’s so focused on a small-time pirate. Plus, his inclusion is a great move to also show the two-sides of the Marines. We want to root for Coby joining the group, but mostly meet very corrupted captains throughout the East Blue. In a way, he a perfect counter balance that there is more to this group, especially to set up Smoker’s apperance in Loguetown.

    Less Islands, More Ships

This change is something I thought off during our recordings of Den Den Murphy, which you can listen to the latest episode by clicking here. We’re seeing a lot of big ships being built and it would seem strange to do so if they are only set dressing. Just like in the anime, I do believe that Alivda’s storyline will be directly on her ship rather than a random island. It works well for the story and adds a nice flair to the series, as it’s odd how little we spend on boats given it’s a pirate story. Yet, I do believe it’s not the only time and would even argue they’d cut one of the bigger islands in addition to the one Gaimon is stuck on, and move it to a ship.

I went back-and-forth on this a lot, but my theory would be that we might skip Straw Hats’ time in Orange Town. Not the storyline, but them taking on Buggy on the island. The only important landmark is the pet store protected by Chouchou. The Buggy pirates could have already destroyed it in the series, and the little dog is trying to retrieve the only thing that remains of his owner. As such, he chased the the circus-inspired crew to their ship where the story takes place. Recent set photos by the South African President revealed a circus tent, which was part of Buggy’s ship named Big Top. It would work as a creative backdrop and mix the story up as we mostly traveled from one town to another in the original.

    More Foreshadowing

As you’ll likely notice, most of my theories on the changes are based on building more connectivity. The East Blue Saga is the most “independent” storyline as each arc doesn’t necessarily built into the next. Seeing them interweave some minor plot points that build or or connect to later makes a lot of sense to grab viewer’s attention across its first season. Morgan referencing his capture of Kuro before we realize what truly happened, people discussing Don Krieg being the first in a long-time to attempt the Grand Line, and so much more could be sprinkled throughout to add some foreshadowing.

Yet, I’d also go one step further and say that I do think they might add elements from later storylines that are hinted at before they even enter the Grand Line. References to Sanji’s real backstory and the Germa 66 would make sense as a small indication, even if it’s just him reading the comic “Sora, Warrior of the Sea.” Zoro being confronted by a member of Baroque Works makes sense, as it is referenced in the manga but never got to see it happen. Even just thinking about the infamous execution of “Gold” Roger opens up so many possibilities.

With still some time until we even get a trailer for the adaptation, it’s fun to speculate and theorize how they might adapt Eichiiro Oda‘s famous manga. There’s a whole community that has built around this series and if you’re interested you can check out the Discord by clicking here to share your thoughts on the project.
