  • First Look at Luffy’s Devil Fruit in Netflix’s Live-Action ‘One Piece’

First Look at Luffy’s Devil Fruit in Netflix’s Live-Action ‘One Piece’

One Piece Day gave us the live-action One Piece’s first full trailer. While we still have some time to wait for the actual release, it was an overall big day for Eiichiro Oda’s baby. He’s been working on it for 26 years and has been very open about his involvement in the project. So, the One Piece Day event wasn’t just about Gear 5 and the anime but also gave us quite a few first looks for the series.

Not only did an image surface give us a first look at the franchise’s Den Den Mushi, but @newworldartur has also surprised us with another piece of their prop showcase. Now just anything, but the iconic Gum-Gum Fruit, or Gomu-Gomu no Mi for those that prefer the Japanese dub. It looks like a one-to-one adaptation of the original with a rather curious detail.

The detail of it being part of a Marine case stands out, as that is a revelation that wouldn’t become relevant until 20+ years later. Yes, they considered a detail that wouldn’t really pay off for many years to come, which highlights that those involved with the project are big fans of the original series. We’ll have to wait and see how it comes together, especially if they even hint at how the Red-Haired Pirates get their hands on it before Luffy ends up eating it.

  • Live-action ‘One Piece’ Director Teases Upcoming Trailer Release is “Not Long Now”

Live-action ‘One Piece’ Director Teases Upcoming Trailer Release is “Not Long Now”

It’s finally here: One Piece Day. A celebration of one of the longest-running Shonen Jump series is almost here as Eiichiro Oda celebrates 26 years of Monkey D. Luffy’s journey. This year, however, is a bit special as we also have a live-action series on the horizon. On August 31st, the world will see how showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda worked hard to bring this classic to life.

While the first teaser still had some skeptical about the series’ potential; mostly a result of past iterations not quite living up tot he standard of the material they adapt, there’s a lot of excitement given how much Oda has been involved with this project. Now, we’ve only been waiting for a full-fledged trailer to finally release and it seems the wait isn’t long anymore.

Director Marc Jobst has teased that we can expect the full trailer quite soon; many speculating it’ll be release tomorrow once One piece Day is in full swing. After today was just a pre-show with a screening of One Piece Film Red, it does seem likely they might release something tomorrow. Not only that, but the Straw Hat Grand Fleet fan website also added a new function perfectly timed ahead of the weekend.

    https://twitter.com/marcjobst1/status/1682379698884554752

That’s not all, as Netflix Japan’s official Twitter page also promoted the event just the other day, which continues to add more relevance to something Netflix-related happening during the event. Given the studios are still not paying writers and actors what they are owed, it’s unclear if any of the non-SAG cast will be attending or if they have another pre-recorded video message like with Anime Expo.

It’s still not a full confirmation, but it would be surprising if we didn’t get any kind of trailer this weekend. If not, there’s still the chance we might get some character posters to tie us over. It’s not uncommon or the full trailer to drop around a month before release for a Netflix series, which makes the timing match even better. Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait long for the reveal.

  • Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Teaser Trailer Passes 10M Views on YouTube

Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Teaser Trailer Passes 10M Views on YouTube

TUDUM was the big unveil for the first trailer for Netflix’s live-action One Piece series. A short teaser gave us a first look at what is to come and was our first real look at the cast in their costume, especially since they were teased with posters in January. Half a year later, we not only got to see the main cast in action but even a release date of August 31st.

After around two weeks, the show hit its first milestone as the teaser trailer passed 10 million views on YouTube, which was also shared by the official @Eiichiro_Staff Twitter account. Even on Twitter, the trailer has reached around 32.2M impressions and was retweeted up to 74.2K times.

Even the recent Anime Expo video of confirming that the live-action series will be dubbed by the original Japanese voice cast has already hit 3.2M views on Twitter. Though, it currently has managed to pull in 595K viewers within the last five days as of writing this article. Though, that is higher than other trailers or videos from the same event such as Zom 100, PLUTO, Pokémon Concierge, and Delicious in Dungeon.

It’s difficult to say what Netflix considers a healthy sign and viewership on YouTube doesn’t always equate to viewership on Netflix. So, we’ll still have to see if Netflix can keep up this strong promotional run for the series as we close in on its August release. While a mixed reception is expected for any live-action adaptation of a popular anime, this series has a big chance of potentially reaching a new audience that wouldn’t give the manga or anime a chance. So, here’s hoping the passion of everyone involved translates to the finished product.

  • First Reactions of New ‘One Piece’ Footage from Anime Expo

First Reactions of New ‘One Piece’ Footage from Anime Expo

Anime Expo dropped quite a bit for One Piece, as not only did we get a little trailer for the latest volume of the manga, but even a new video for the live-action adaptation. Netflix’s Japanese dub will feature the original voices, as Inaki Godoy got to meet Mayumi Tanaka. As it turns out, some influencers also got a sneak peek of a few clips from the series, which gives us a better indication of what the series is going to look like.

@newworldartur, who also revealed they also contributed to the lore of the adaptation, shared a few insights into what the series was like. We got a glimpse of what’s to come in the teaser trailer but they go on to praise that what the show does well is it’s “goofy and fun-loving” just like the original series.

Some negative remarks were that there was some cheesy or “cringe” dialogue but still praises the script. So, perhaps only a few lines here or there are a bit more awkward than others especially not uncommon with shows finding their footing early on. There were some comments about the CG but does highlight it works for what the show is going for, but also has some time to finish work on.

They do highlight that they are faithful to the original, but they still tweaked some of the characteristics to make them a tad more “realistic.” One of the bigger changes seems to be that Nami seemingly joins Luffy and Zoro in Shells City, as hinted at in the teaser. They do highlight that the changes give it a better flow which matches the later storylines.

One highlight seems to be that they believe there are small instances that come from Eiichiro Oda, like Luffy being able to “hear something from the Merry“. Overall, seems they quite enjoyed what they saw and it gives us a little sense of what we can expect from the series next month.

They weren’t the only ones, as YouTubers Volume One also shared their reaction to a scene, which seems ripped straight from the manga, where Nami tricks members of Buggy’s crew. They highlight that her costume seemingly ripped from the early Nami concept art, but also highlighted that the show feels “piraty” and highlights the scale. Seems that seeing more of the character also greatly helps how the characters come to life, with even praises of the cinematography which was criticized in the trailer.

  • ‘One Piece’ Lore Analyst Contributed to Netflix’s Live-Action Series

‘One Piece’ Lore Analyst Contributed to Netflix’s Live-Action Series

We all know that the upcoming One Piece series heading to Netflix has a big challenge. Not only do they have to tackle one of the most popular manga out there, but there is also 1,000+ chapters worth of world-building that would need to fit into a live-action setting. Showrunner Matt Owens is a long-time fan of the manga and would likely know what elements would fit into the East Blue to tease what future seasons could explore.

A big plus that Owens also brings to the project is that he’s very involved in the online One Piece community. As it turns out, he also wanted to make use of the knowledge that people have gathered throughout the many years of the manga’s run and had analyst and One Piece influencer Artur – Library of Ohara (on Twitter as @newworldartur) to support the production.

They took to their Twitter account to share that they contributed to the live-action series by helping with references to the franchise’s lore, Easter eggs, and even timeline. They do highlight that they weren’t directly involved with the production but it’s definitely great to see the production team also involve the community to ensure that every bit fits into the franchise many have come to love over 25 years.

They aren’t the only influencer that has been involved, as @RogersBase even openly confirmed he got a chance to visit the sets of Netflix’s One Piece series. @RandyTroy has even hosted Owens in his streams after the trailer dropped to discuss some of the details that were revealed. The showrunner is showcasing the potential of this series by having those that’ll share it with the wider community involved to create a stronger sense of authenticity.

  • ‘One Piece’s Original Japanese Voice Cast to Dub Netflix’s Live-Action Version

‘One Piece’s Original Japanese Voice Cast to Dub Netflix’s Live-Action Version

Here’s a rather great surprise, it looks like the original voice cast of the Japanese One Piece series will return for the live-action adaptation heading to Netflix later in August. In a cute video revealed during this year’s Anime Expo, Inaki Godoy met with the original Monkey D. Luffy voice actress, who has been playing the character since 1999, Mayumi Tanaka. In a way, it also acts as a “passing of the torch“, as she also praises Godoy for his work as the character.

Of course, while the rest of the voice cast did not appear in the video, they have confirmed that everyone is set to reprise their iconic roles in the adaptation. Godoy and Taz Skylar also confirmed that they will be reprising their roles in the Spanish dubs as well, which is a great touch given their own cultural background and just adds a little fun. Funny enough, the German voice cast of the anime has also been teased as part of the live-action adaptation.

What a great little surprise to come out of Anime Expo, plus we also had the cast of the live-action One Piece together once more. Cowboy Bebop’s live-action adaptation also featured the original cast but it didn’t have this much of a push besides a short confirmation on Social Media. Netflix seemingly knows what this show is all about and is using the dynamic of this cast, and now having the voice since 1999 of the iconic lead passing on a straw hat. Hard to deny, there’s a lot of hope to see this show succeed.

  • First Look at Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Merchandise for Luffy and Zoro

First Look at Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Merchandise for Luffy and Zoro

Just a few days ago, there was the announcement that S.H.Figuarts would be doing a collaboration with Netflix for the upcoming live-action One Piece series. It’s certainly a step further for them actually pushing merchandise before the series released, as Cowboy Bebop was more of a wait-and-see approach before it got rushed out. Luckily, they hinted that we’ll likely get our first look during the Anime Expo 2023 and the first images have already found their way online.

YouTuber @DesnesCitrus shared an image, which initially came from Kaboom Kollectibles, from the Anime Expo that unveils a first look at two figurines from this new series line. We get a good look at Mackenyu Arata’s take on Roronoa Zoro and Inaki Godoy’s Monkey D. Luffy. While we don’t know if all the main Straw Hat members are getting their own figurines, it does seem fitting given the big push of the cast as the live-action series’ big selling point.

The figurines look great and are quite detailed. It’s still crazy to think that Netflix is already going all-in to bank off of this series. One Piece is a franchise that managed to even outsell Batman’s entire lifetime comic sales and likely has a chance to surpass Superman by the time it eventually ends in the coming years. So, it has quite a massive audience built-in and if they manage to draw in a strong audience for the live-action series, they might be able to also build a strong base for additional sales.

This is a way how Marvel Studios’ various projects are far more than just their box office revenue. If people buy merchandise, they end up generating additional revenue with Intellectual Property that also gives them a reason to keep it around longer. So, we’ll see if this strategy might end up reflecting what Netflix saw with Squid Game and Stranger Things, which could carry this series for many years to come.

  • Emily Rudd Shares How She Got Into ‘One Piece’

Emily Rudd Shares How She Got Into ‘One Piece’

Netflix just recently unveiled the first teaser trailer for One Piece, which is their next major release besides the return of The Witcher. With 3 Body Problem and Avatar: The Last Airbender postponed until 2024, it’s their last major push for the year. And, they went all out during TUDUM where Decider’s Raven Brunner got a chance to interview the actress Emily Rudd, who plays Nami in the series.

She got the chance to sit down and talk to the actress about the dream opportunity of playing an iconic character like Nami. In the interview, she shared how she ended up meeting showrunner Matt Owens and how he was a big part of her getting into the series. also, he seemingly set his mind on getting One Piece to Netflix when he pitched it for her to check out.

I’ve always known about One Piece – it’s a massive IP – but I didn’t start watching [the show] until I met our showrunner, Matt Owens, who has been my best friend for the last six years. We are with the same agency and they said, “Hey, you’re both nerds – go have coffee, chat it out.” And we did. He was like, “Yeah, I think I’m going to bring One Piece to Netflix. You should watch it if you haven’t.” And I was like “Okay, yeah, I’ll dive into 1000 plus episodes.” But I did.

    Emily Rudd

She goes on to highlight that she hasn’t quite caught up with the anime, she definitely read all the manga. Rudd also highlighted how different it is for her reading the iconic journey of the Straw Hats compared to the anime.

Well, I read all the manga. I’m still working on the anime. There’s something about reading where I feel like the information is going into my brain in a very healthy way, and then with the anime, I was getting distracted.

    Emily Rudd

The big selling point of this show is the way the cast interact with each other. Many of the cast members seem to just be the characters they will portray in the live-action sequence. Rudd highlights that they spent a lot of time together, but highlights she was with Inaki Godoy quite a bit due to seeing him like a little brother.

We all kind of spent time with each other equally, but I spent a lot of time with Iñaki [Godoy] and we definitely developed this older-sister-younger-brother dynamic. He’s 19 and I am not, so I felt a little protective of him. But, also he’s so energetic, so playful — it’s infectious. We created silly little bits that we just milked to death.

    Emily Rudd

It definitely sounds like they had a lot of fun behind the scenes. Going by a lot of the promotional material so far, the group’s dynamic is quite infectious. One can see that Netflix also saw the potential and is definitely not holding back with promoting the show with videos of them just hanging out. Here’s hoping the wait for the next trailer isn’t too far off so we can get a good look at how they are together on screen.

  • Netflix Unveils ‘One Piece’ Collaboration with S.H.Figuarts

Netflix Unveils ‘One Piece’ Collaboration with S.H.Figuarts

Early on during the production of the live-action One Piece series, Netflix hinted that they want it to become their next major Stranger Things. Of course, they hope the show becomes a major player on the app that makes good use of the original stories’ many years worth of story to tell, they also had a different hope which is seemingly coming true.

Tamashii Nations’ action figure brand S.H.Figuarts has unveiled that they are working on a collaboration with the live-action One Piece series. That means we’re getting some high-quality figurines based on the iconic take of these live-action takes. The timing is also perfect, as they also revealed our first look will be available at the upcoming Anime Expo 2023 this weekend.

This collaboration is likely just the first, as YouTooz who already hinted at a figurine based on Inaki Godoy’s Monkey D. Luffy. So, we might expect an announcement soon or perhaps they are still trying to build up the reveal ahead of the weekend. Who knows if this also expands to potential figurines based on the iconic ships or various landmarks from the live-action take. Netflix is certainly all-in for this project to work.

As mentioned previously, One Piece wants it to be the next Stranger Things and that means they want it to sell merchandise. A lot of major projects don’t just live off of their viewership, similar to how Squid Game became a massive success with the various merch even though it has only released a single season so far. If there is any project that has the potential, it definitely is One Piece.

  • New ‘One Piece’ Website Teases Netflix’s Take on the Marines

New ‘One Piece’ Website Teases Netflix’s Take on the Marines

Netflix has been heavily promoting the upcoming live-action One Piece series. They invested a lot and are not holding back on promoting it, which gave us some posters early in the year leading up to a trailer reveal during TUDUM. Shortly after the event, with a release in late August on the horizon, we got a new special website for those wanting to join the live-action Straw Hats on Netflix. The biggest addition is that it also includes some rather curious teases for the series.

The website strawhatgrandfleet.com gives you a chance to sign up and become a “Nakama” of the Straw Hat’s Grand Fleet (a great reference to the manga). In the background, you can see various posters that are likely part of the show with a showcase of some curious references. ‘s backgrounds. They paint a good picture of how this pirate-infested world is living and that perhaps the Marines aren’t as much of our friends as one thinks.

The biggest tease is that the “World Government” is included by name with a Big Brother poster. Those eyes even include little swirls that might be a reference to a recent reveal. They are warning many pirates throughout while also highlighting “Absolute Justice,” which is an iconic tagline of a major character we don’t meet until much later in the storyline. It looks like we’ll see a lot of propaganda throughout the series which also feels like a fitting way to adapt the Marines in a Western live-action adaptation that has similar experiences with police.

The best little inclusion is the Tangerine Juice poster that has the name of Belle-Mère, who is an important character for Nami. If you look closely, there are also some Wanted posters for unknown characters. Though, the posters are quite close to the ones we see in the manga, which is a great little touch. You can even see the Berry symbol in the left bottom corner. Here’s hoping we have more to see in the coming weeks.
