Paramount+ Unveils Release Dates and Renewals for Several ‘Star Trek’ Series

It looks like Paramount+ is about to boldly go into the next year, as the official Star Trek Twitter account shared quite a few announcements in one major wave. The new year will see the release of Discovery‘s fourth season as of February 10th, followed by Picard‘s second season on March 3rd, Strange New Worlds then on May 5th. That is quite the line-up of heavy hitters one after another. The Nickelodeon series Star Trek: Prodigy also will have new episodes from the first season through February 3rd with new ones announced for later in the year. It also looks like the third season of Lower Decks will return in the summer of this year.

That is not all, as the announcements also include quite a few renewals. Lower Decks will get a fourth season, Discovery will also make a return with a fifth season while Strange New Worlds gets a second season renewal. Picard, surprisingly, did not get a renewal which may hint at it potentially ending in the second season, but they may also want to be keeping the door open to catch viewers by surprise. Still, it’s a massive move to renew three series on the same day, but they announced it with a set of great visuals highlighting each series, which you can check out here:

It’s crazy to think just how many shows are currently running that explore different corners of the Star Trek universe. Lower Decks takes a comedic look at what it’s like living in a ship that travels through the galaxy to explore undiscovered parts of the galaxy. Discovery was part of the current revival of the franchise through TV series, which had mainly expanded in cinemas. It’ll be interesting to see if they have other projects cooking to further expand their franchise.

  • Netflix Developing New Animated Comedy ‘Bad Crimes’, Nicole Byer and Lauren Lapkus to Star

Netflix Developing New Animated Comedy ‘Bad Crimes’, Nicole Byer and Lauren Lapkus to Star

Netflix is bringing in some powerhouse talent for its latest foray into animated comedy. The popular streaming service has ordered a new series titled Bad Crimes from television veterans Greg Daniels, Mike Judge, and Nicole Silverberg. The show, which will star Netflix mainstays Nicole Byer and Lauren Lapkus in the lead roles, will center around the misadventures of two FBI agents who travel across the country to solve grisly murders while juggling their friendship, career ambitions, and a host of romantic suitors.

Bad Crimes will serve as the latest in a long line of successful collaborations from Daniels and Judge, who previously co-created the hit comedy King of the Hill for Fox. This is also not the first time Byer and Lapkus have worked side-by-side, as the pair currently host a podcast together called Newcomers. Every name involved with this project comes backed by an impressive resume.

Aside from the previously mentioned King of the Hill, Daniels is known for developing cultural phenomena on NBC with The Office and Parks & Recreation. Judge is a legend in his own right, having created both Beavis and Butt-Head for MTV and Silicon Valley for HBO and directing the cult favorite comedy film Office Space in 1999. Silverberg is a promising new writer on the scene, fresh off her work on TBS’ Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. As for the voice acting talent, Byer is perhaps most well-known for her hosting gig on Netflix’s Nailed It! while Lapkus gained notoriety for her long-running role on the service’s hit series Orange is the New Black.

  • ‘Moon Knight’ Trailer Includes First Look at Khonshu

‘Moon Knight’ Trailer Includes First Look at Khonshu

After a long wait, the first trailer has finally dropped for the upcoming Disney+ series, Moon Knight. Oscar Isaac takes the spotlight as the mentally broken man that is about to uncover his secret identity as the titular hero. In the comics, the character suffers from a multiple personality disorder, which made it difficult for readers to know if everything he witnesses is real. Included in that is his own heroic origin as the messenger for the Egyptian god known as Khonshu.

The 2016 comic run introduced a very eerie design, which saw Kohnshu wearing the Mr. Knight outfit but with a bird skull. It was uncertain if the Disney+ series was going to truly jump into that part of his mythology or keep it for the future. Yet, after the first teaser hinted at the inclusion of humanoid Jackals, it gave us some hope that he’d make an appearance in the series. Completely catching us off guard is the fact that Khonshu even shows up in the first trailer for the series.

    Image

While we don’t get a full look, we definitely see the iconic staff and the skull that adorned his face. He’s not wearing the white suit, as he is seemingly wearing the same outfit that Moon Knight is in throughout the trailer. As such, we might assume that once he appears it always reflects the costume. The Disney+ Day teaser included a reference to Mr. Knight, which could also lead to Khonshu wearing that outfit as well at some point. It’s exciting to see Marvel Studios fully embrace the character’s mythology and hopefully play with the viewer’s perception of reality.

You can check out the trailer right here in case you missed it:

  • Leaked ‘One Piece’ Photos Confirms Marc Jobst and DOP Nicole Whitaker’s Involvement

Leaked ‘One Piece’ Photos Confirms Marc Jobst and DOP Nicole Whitaker’s Involvement

It looks like some new photos have found their way online from the upcoming live-action adaptation of One Piece. We’ve been still anxiously awaiting when the series might start-up production, as hints are it may not be until spring or summer of this year. In the meantime, it seems that some new images have found their way online of the clapperboards that’ll be used during production. As shared by @OP_Netflix_Fan, who has been reliable in the past, the clapperboards include some details for the upcoming production.

What sticks out is that it confirms our story from September that Daredevil director Marc Jobst is involved with the series. It also includes the “Project Panda” title, which was confirmed some time ago. It also includes the director of photography, which is Nicole Hirsch Whitaker. She’s previously worked on projects like Jupiter’s Legacy and Truth Be Told. The only other detail that sticks out is that the unit using these clapperboards is called the “Paramecia Unit,” which is a nice nod to the manga’s naming of a specific Devil Fruit type.

It certainly seems like there’s a lot of movement happening behind the scenes, and we might get a confirmation of their production start similar to other Netflix series, which tend to do it through the Netflix Geeked Twitter account. We did get a short message during Jump Festa from the main cast, but we still have no insight into who the supporting cast might turn out to be. Here’s hoping the wait isn’t that much longer.

  • Murphy’s Team-Up, Volume 14: Reviewing ‘Peacemaker’

    Murphy’s Team-Up, Volume 14: Reviewing ‘Peacemaker’

    Anthony Canton III

The first three episodes of Peacemaker are an energetic whirlwind of wild. James Gunn’s fingerprints are all over this in the best way possible. From the opening scene to the can’t skip opening credits, it’s a tour de force of fun. John Cena was born to play this role, and Danielle Brooks is a revelation as Adebayo. Having the intricate knowledge of The Suicide Squad makes this show already feel lived in, but you can totally watch it fresh. I’m anticipating episode 4 already to see what’s next from this wonderful cast and crew. P and V!

Peacemaker Trailer Reveals First Look at Judomaster

Peacemaker’s first 3 episodes were a ride! This is the role John Cena was born to play. While he’s otherwise never really stood out to me in any of his other projects, Cena’s work as Peacemaker has been fantastic. And while’s he’s still pretty much just an asshole who works well as the punchline of pretty much every joke, if you’re paying attention you’re seeing something more from Cena in these episodes. James Gunn’s strengths as a writer and director are magnified here with more time to spend on the interpersonal dynamics that he always manages so magnificently and the members of the core team are all doing great work both fitting in and getting their chances to shine. Gunn’s also done a great job taking characters that nobody has given a shit about for decades and making them fun. Vigilante has been hilarious to date and Judomaster’s fight scene was a riot. Robert Patrick has caused a lot of feelings in his limited time as Peacemaker’s piece of shit father and it’s clear he’s got a bigger role to play yet. To be fully honest, I don’t even care to learn more about Project Butterfly or who is behind it. I’d be fine just watching these people go through their day.

    Mary Maerz

Peacemaker delivers on its promise to be a parody-like take on the more traditional superhero genre. It’s funny, it’s raunchy, and it confuses the boundaries of hero and anti-hero more than most takes on anti-heroes. John Cena really is perfect as Peacemaker–without that, Peacemaker might have been a non-starter–and the casting overall is phenomenal. Freddie Stroma’s Vigilante is the best part of the whole series, though. I thought the first three episodes had some pacing issues and didn’t quite capitalize on its strongest elements, so to me they felt a bit more flat than I would have liked. But they consistently improved as they went along, and I am pretty confident the series is going to keep getting stronger.

The Unexpected Relationship That DC Fans Are Loving In Peacemaker

Even though Peacemaker debuted to mostly wonderful reviews across the board it didn’t quite grab me in the same way. Even so, I absolutely understand how it being R-rated helps to take such a show to a new level, making it feel, at times, a bit more real and not as squeaky clean, to a fault, as many others. Especially because that angle fits so very well with the bonkers worldbuilding set up in The Suicide Squad by James Gunn. The episodic format does allow us to spend more time in said world, and it’s perhaps the repetitiveness and the double downing on many jokes that comes with that extra runtime, making them the norm and not the exception, that makes them feel a bit odd. As such, the humor has been sort of hit-and-miss but I don’t hold that against the series as its best moments still seem to overshadow its lowest. With just three episodes out so far it’s expected that the best is still yet to come as the script matures alongside the characters in it.
The highlights have been, without a doubt, John Cena and Danielle Brooks’ performances. While Cena seems to have been born to play this role and shines in every chance he gets, Brooks exudes such humanity in every single line spoken that you can’t help but root for her every step of the way.
Above all, it’s palpable how everybody involved had a great time making this show. Even if it might turn out not to be my favorite thing ever, there isn’t much more one can ask for from such a talented cast and crew.

    Joseph Aberl

Peacemaker is peak James Gunn, as you see him truly embrace the wackiness of a post-The Suicide Squad world. Not only do we get some good comedy to ease us into understanding these characters quite easily, but they also build up a rather intriguing mystery surrounding its main antagonists. We’re put into Peacemaker’s shoes as we try to find out what exactly he is going up against, as it slowly unravels throughout the episodes. What sells the show are the performances by Freddie Stroma and John Cena, whose attitude completely counteracts the more serious nature of what they are going up against. Cena is also all-in with the wackiness and quite a raunchy continuation of his character, which fits perfectly into the R-rated and brutal world we were introduced to.

Peacemaker Show Footage Reveals First Look At Vigilante

Peacemaker is a wonderful, mixed bag. The show simultaneously feels like something born out of the early 2000s and something that could never have existed before now. It is a glorious celebration of the weirdness of comic books while also tearing their self-righteousness apart at the seams. It’s not a show for everyone, but it was never advertised that way. John Cena is a surprisingly capable leading man, the action is great, and when the humor lands, it really lands. It’s James Gunn tapping into his Super days, with a much larger budget. It may not be the most nuanced comic adaptation we’ve ever gotten, but if you’re looking for a good, raunchy time, it doesn’t get much better. I dig it.

    John Sabato

Peacemaker has been everything I’ve wanted it to be and more. John Cena shines brighter than his helmet in this series. He’s really acting his ass off here and is becoming such a phenomenal actor. His supporting cast is just as good with Harcourt, Economos, Murn, Vigilante, and Adebayo each bringing something special to the show and just working so well with each other. Of course this wouldn’t be a thing without the maestro himself, James Gunn, who continues to create of the best comic book media in the genre. The way he’s able to bring such emotional weight to the silliest and most outlandish ideas is something to behold. Gunn just knows what he is doing here; he’s a giant nerd in the best way possible and makes some really deep cuts and provides some fantastic world building in the series. There’s some seriously great character work here with Christopher Smith, peeling back those layers yet still letting him be the douchebag we all got to know in The Suicide Squad. I truly hope Gunn continues to build on his corner of the DCEU because this stuff is GOLD.

  • HBO’s ‘The Last Of Us’ Adds ‘Euphoria’s Storm Reid as Riley

HBO’s ‘The Last Of Us’ Adds ‘Euphoria’s Storm Reid as Riley

The Last Of Us has been busy filming for its release on HBO. The video game adaptation will retell the story of Joel and Ellie, as they travel across the post-apocalyptic United States to potentially find a cure to the disease turning people into fungal zombies. They have found most of their cast, but it seems that they had one more announcement ready as Storm Reid, known for her work on Euphoria and A Wrinkle in Time, has joined the project in the role of Riley.

The series is created by the game’s original creator Neil Druckman and Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin, as Pedro Pascal takes on the role of Joel with Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Reid will have a guest role in the series as Riley Abel, an orphaned girl from Boston. She doesn’t feature in the main storyline but was part of the game’s first DLC titled Left Behind. She’s part of Ellie’s backstory before she ends up meeting with Joel. It’s uncertain if intertwining these storylines or we spend some time with Ellie before she ends up meeting with her reluctant father figure.

  • RUMOR: Pakistani Actress Mehwish Hayat May Have a Role in ‘Ms. Marvel’

RUMOR: Pakistani Actress Mehwish Hayat May Have a Role in ‘Ms. Marvel’

As fans wait for a release date for Ms. Marvel (and the rest of Marvel Studios 2022 Disney Plus slate), it seems another member of the cast may have been discovered. Actress Mehwish Hayat, described as one of Pakistan’s leading actresses in her IMDB profile, seems to have joined the cast of the series alongside fellow Pakistani actors Fawad Khan and Nimra Bucha.

The rumor comes way of the Express Tribune, which clearly stated that the casting is not confirmed at this point. According to the Tribune, they were able to deduce that Hayat had a role in the series after first mistakenly believing that one her co-stars on Punjab Nahi Jaungi would be in Ms. Marvel. Once that was cleared up, they site made the connection to Hayat and went from there.

While Khan’s role in the series is unknown at the time, it’s been speculated that he might be playing one of the villains of the series, the Clan Destine, so it’s possible that Hayat may be joining him as one of the family.

Ms. Marvel is set for a streaming debut in Summer of 2022.

  • ‘Santa Clause’ Revival Series Heading to Disney+, Tim Allen to Return

‘Santa Clause’ Revival Series Heading to Disney+, Tim Allen to Return

We know that Disney+ is obsessed with reviving classic IPs to attract new viewers to its streaming platform, but this is quite an interesting surprise. It looks like the Christmas classic Santa Clause starring Tim Allen is making a return. It’ll be the third time the actor takes on the role of Scott Calvin after his last appearance in the 2006 threequel. He originally took on the role back in 1994, where the unknowing Scott ended up leading to the death of Santa Clause and would take on the role. It seems the series will explore his time to pass on the role, as revealed in the following series description:

Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa forever. He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole. With a lot of elves, children, and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the pole.

The mastermind behind Allen‘s last comedy series Last Man Standing, Jack Burditt, is on as showrunner and executive producer. Kevin Hench, Richard Baker, and Rick Messina will also join in the executive producer role alongside its star. With Hocus Pocus 2 on the horizon, it really seems like the House of Mouse is quite excited to revive cult classics for a new generation of viewers.
