    REVIEW: ‘The Last of Us’ Leaves Nothing Behind In Ellie Showcase

    Ellie is, without a doubt, the strongest character in The Last of Us. A complex, endearing, multi-layered, endlessly interesting survivor. She is, and always has been, the true protagonist of the entire post-apocalyptic franchise, from the original video game to all of its sequels, spin-offs, and adaptations. Without her, there is no The Last of Us, so it’s about time HBO’s acclaimed series finally took the dive into what makes her tick. Based on and titled after the celebrated downloadable expansion Left Behind, this week’s episode steps away from the mainline narrative to explore a bit more of Ellie’s backstory, and give some much-needed context heading into the season’s backend stretch. The result is another beautifully heartbreaking stand-alone outing and the perfect showcase for Bella Ramsey‘s immense talent.

    Ramsey has been incredible from the start. Their portrayal of Ellie, a beloved personality so distinctively brought to life by Ashley Johnson in the video games, has been joyfully spot-on since they first charged Pedro Pascal’s Joel with their signature switchblade and found themselves eating drywall. Left Behind, however, was always going to be their toughest challenge, with its looming presence in the series teased for months via trailers and other promotional materials. The story told in this chapter, yet another rooted in love, is Ellie’s character thesis. It explains almost everything about her constitution, and informs every decision she’s made, or will make, from here on out. Ramsey needed to nail their performance, for the sake of Ellie and the series at large, and unsurprisingly, they pull it off with what seemed like spectacular ease.

    It is important that the audience feel what Ellie is experiencing throughout the hour. To not just see it, but to become immersed in the story and really understand its characters. Of course, this feat can’t be achieved with handholding. It has to be subtle, and it has to appear real. Furthermore, viewers aren’t slow, and they’re likely to recognize Left Behind is leading toward a clear ending. As such, it becomes critical that the episode not do the same thing. The entirety of the entry’s runtime is building towards something tragic, but the final moments of the episode are only effective if the people watching forget what they know is coming. They need to perceive hope and they need to get it from the faces on screen. This is potentially the most difficult task an actor can come up against, which is why it’s so impressive what Ramsey and special guest star Storm Reid are able to accomplish through even the most minor of glances.

    The chemistry shared between the performers is impeccable. In terms of casting, The Last of Us struck gold. Ellie and Reid‘s Riley spend most of Left Behind talking about everything except what they’d actually like to say, yet the actors are still able to convey the rest through hopeful eyes and nervous glares. It makes for a wildly compelling, and far more convincing, exploration of their relationship, something that becomes absolutely essential when the episode swaps out action set pieces for more character-driven conflict. Even if the audience is aware that Riley is bound for death, they still want to believe the same fairytale whimsy that Ellie is clinging to.

    For most of Left Behind, that lie is sold through the ghostly dreamscape of the mall and the soothing winsome with which the leads find ways to interact with it. Though weighted by heavy questions, much of the episode is bolstered by a childlike innocence, used in large part to make the ending pack a harder punch. People often remember Left Behind for its devastating conclusion, but HBO’s take should serve to remind them it’s actually a pretty fun, smile-inducing journey for the large majority. It’s a continuation of what makes The Last of Us, as a whole, so addictive. A dangerous combination of enchanting, heartwarming, fantastic love with the soul-crushing reality of imperfection and consequence. An upper and a downer. The human condition.

    Ultimately, Left Behind is yet another example of television at its best. Ramsey and Reid are flawless, working magic across more gorgeous set design. Thought-provoking ideas bouncing between the walls of a neon-lit cavern, acting as a parabolic playground for emotion. The Last of Us continues to be more of an experience than something simply observed, which may sound dramatic or hyperbolic, but has come to be apparent in its manner of affecting those who view it so drastically. Perhaps this is because, as Left Behind so efficiently demonstrates, The Last of Us taps into something so incredibly human it becomes difficult to deny. People see themselves in Ellie, and thankfully, they’ll get to see more down the line.

    ‘The Umbrella Academy’s Final Season Adds Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally

    One of Netflix’s biggest releases is about to wrap up with its final season, as The Umbrella Academy is gearing up to start filming soon. The series made quite a splash for the streaming service as it continued to grow with big-name IPs. Sadly, we’re about to see it come to an end but it seems like they are going all out with the final season.

    ET has shared that Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman have joined Umbrella Academy. The actually married couple is set to play “a mild-mannered married couple named Jean and Gene, who are college professors” in the upcoming final season. Mullally revealed it to ET during the premiere of Party Down’s third season though she also highlights that “the deal’s not quite closed but let’s just pretend it is.”

    It’s quite a power move to just reveal that you’re cast in a big-budget show without having finalized the deal, but the power couple certainly can. Nick Offerman was just recently in the spotlight for his mesmerizing performance in The Last of Us and it’s great to see him already eyeing his next project. Mullally also revealed that she was the one o convince her husband to take on the role, as he almost would’ve passed on it due to being so busy.

    ‘Wonder Man’ Reportedly Adds Lauren Glazier, Werner Herzog to Growing Cast

    As Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series Wonder Man prepares to enter production over the coming months, the cast is beginning to round out. Just days after reporting that Demetrius Grosse had signed on, industry insider Daniel RPK broke the news on a pair of castings. According to RPK, Lauren Glazier (Takes of the Walking Dead) and Werner Herzog (The Mandalorian) have joined the cast.

    No details were given concerning the roles either actor would fill, Glazier does seem to fit a the bill for the female lead of the project. While it’s possible Herzog could have been cast in a role that was previously rumored to be offered to Bob Odenkirk, the former is significantly out of the age range Marvel Studios was reported to have identified for the role.

    The project, written by Andrew Guest and created by Destin Daniel Cretton, is set to enter into production in April. Wonder Man will introduce long-time Avenger Simon Williams, played by Yaha Abdul-Mateen II, to the MCU and is said to be a Hollywood satire. Given the mandate by Bob Iger that Marvel Studios slow the wheels on its production machine, it seems unlikely that Wonder Man will be headed to the streaming service any time soon, with eyes on a possible late 2024 or early 2025 release.

    ‘Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet Joins Disney+’s ‘The Santa Clauses’

    Modern Family‘s Eric Stonestreet is joining the cast of Disney+’s original series, The Santa Clauses. Stonestreet will play Magnus Antus, a 14th-century ruler aiming to take down Scott Calvin, played by Tim Allen, and reclaim the North Pole. He was known as the Mad Santa, which matches his rather cruel ambitions.

    The Santa Clauses is returning after the series captured viewers’ attention last year. It was among the top five most-watched series during Disney+’s Seasons Streaming campaign and is very likely to dominate the next HOliday season once again. Stonestreet is a great addition to the cast, as he made quite an impression with viewers during his time on Modern Family as Cam. So, he’ll likely bring the same charm to this new role and add a new iconic character to the Holidays.

    The second season promises a return to the North Pole after Santa’s retirement plans unravel. Scott Calvin will focus on training his son to take over the “family business.” Though going by this new casting, it seems that his path forward is going to remain a bumpy one as he won’t be able to leave the red suit behind any time soon.

    Fans should expect series regulars Elizabeth Mitchell, Elizabeth Dick, Austin Kane, and Devin Bright to return. Matilda Lawler will lead the slate of guest stars, including newcomer Marta Kessler who will play Olga, a feisty gnome. Reports also indicate that Tim Allen will serve as executive producer with Jack Burditt, the showrunner.

    HBO Max Returning to Derry With ‘IT’ Prequel Series

    It looks like Pennywise the Dancing Clown will return to our homes, as HBO Max has ordered a full series order for the prequel series based on Stephen King’s novel IT. The duo that created the latest iteration for theaters with the two IT films, Andy Muschietty and Barbara Muschietti, are on board alongside Jason Fuchs to bring the series to life.

    It currently has the working title Welcome to Derry and is seemingly going to take place in the same universe as the latest adaptations, as Andy Muschietti is also set to direct multiple episodes alongside the pilot. His work on The Flash certainly made this project a must-order for HBO Max and it’ll be interesting to see how they tackle an expansion of Stephen King‘s iconic novel.

    As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s IT until the thick paperback fell to pieces. IT is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our IT movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humor, humanity and horror.

    Fuchs will write the pilot episode and is also set to showrun the project alongside Brad Caleb Kane. The details are scarce on how they’ll tackle this project and there’s now ord if Bill Skarsgård will return as the iconic horror clown. If it does take place in the same universe, it would make sense to see him tackle the role once more.

    ‘Hawkeye’s Original Musical Number Heading to Disneyland

    There have been many theories that we may see more of that iconic musical piece from Hawkeye titled Rogers: The Musical. After visitors of D23 got a little piece from the musical, many wondered why they wouldn’t make use of it to have a live feature at one of the Disneyland Resorts. Well, it seems it was only a question of time as Marvel has finally announced that Disneyland Resort will indeed start showcasing the one-act version of Rogers: The Musical starting this summer.

    It’s fun to see this unique take on the first Avengers film make its way to real life after its popularity during the airing of Hawkeye on Disney+. While Clint Barton was a bit embarrassed by the project, it definitely became a fan-favorite, especially when we got the musical as the final post-credit sequence. For now, it seems they don’t have any exact details just yet for the project but it will debut on the Hyperion Stage in California Adventure Park.

    Many have wondered what the biggest advantage of Disney has been and that was its synergy. Not only do they have strong box office performers, but they also profit from having their properties get featured at Disney parks, the various merchandise released for the projects, and more. Who knows if they might also get inspired for a full-on musical inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe that could also become a Disney+ original eventually. At this point, anything is possible.

    ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Won’t Release Until Summer 2024

    Game of Thrones returned in style with its first spinoff, House of the Dragon. It took a step back into history long before John Snow even took his first steps and explored the Targaryen’s heritage upon the throne. While we still haven’t seen the man who would eventually become the Mad King, we got the beginning of the end for the Targaryen reign.

    It looks like the continuation of this story will take a bit more time, as Variety shared that production on the second season has just started but the Content CEO of HBO and HBO Max Casey Bloys hinted that a 2024 release “is a good guess.” Variety added that it won’t be eligible for that year’s Emmy season, which has a cut-off date of May 31st, which hints at a potential Summer release.

    So, it seems we’ll have to wait a while before we see the return of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and her husband/uncle Daemon (Matt Smith). The first season jumped through quite a few different times in their lives but the upcoming second is likely to take a more focused direction similar to the original Game of Thrones, as we explore the aftermath of the war started by a prank gone wrong.

    It’s a shame these time windows between seasons seemingly grow with each new high-profile entry. Stranger Things last season only started its writing room after the fourth season was released, which means the wait is also not until 2024. A lot of high-budget projects need time and it’s becoming more and more evident that they’re not spreading out as frequently as normal network series do. So, we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see those dragons soar once again.

    ‘Agatha: Coven of Chaos’ May Be Facing an Indefinite Delay

    Kathryn Hahn‘s Agatha Harkness quickly became one of Phase 4’s most beloved characters despite her villainous role in 2021’s WandaVision. In late 2021, an Agatha-centric spinoff show was announced to be in development by Jac Schaeffer and at SDCC ’22, Kevin Feige revealed plans for that show, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, was slated for a late 2023/early 2024 release. Now it looks like that might not be the case.

    According to insider KC Walsh, Agatha: Coven of Chaos may be facing a delay in its release as Marvel Studios slows down its Disney Plus production machine.

    Walsh’s information lines up with Version 4 of our Hypothetical 2024 Marvel Studios Release Calender in which we suggested that the series may end up moving “through no fault of its own.” Walsh’s report suggests that the new time for the release of Agatha: Coven of Chaos is to be determined which indicates an indefinite delay in the release of the series.

    Despite the delay, there are no concerns about the project being taken off Marvel Studios’ upcoming slate. It looks set to introduce Billy Kaplan, aka Wiccan, to the MCU and given the push towards the Young Avengers assembling in the MCU and Wiccan’s prominent role on the team, the project seems incredibly important.

    RUMOR: ‘Secret Invasion’ Eyeing May Release

    There’s been a lot of silence on Marvel Studios’ future with its next Disney+ series, Secret Invasion. So far, it seems like we’ll only get two this year which is quite the departure from the last two years that saw an onslaught of various projects that further expanded the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yet, as we wait for any news, it seems the next Disney+ series won’t be with us for quite some time.

    Geeks Worldwide KC Walsh has shared an interesting detail in regards to what we can expect from the upcoming Secret Invasion Disney+ series. While he doesn’t offer any insight into when exactly, he claims that the series is currently eyeing a May release. Of course, this may change, as he points out, especially with the tie-in film The Marvels getting pushed back to November.

    Of course, May is also when we’ll get our hands on the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and if they are hoping to spread out the projects more, they may push it back into the summer. Still, if they were eyeing a May release, it would match with the original release window for The Marvels. That also would hint at Loki potentially being a later release though depending on how far along these projects are, they could also be switching to have a closer tie-in with Kang’s arrival in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Whatever series gets released this summer, we’re likely to get a trailer that’ll confirm it.

    New Listing May Hint at a Potential ‘One Piece’ Season 2

    Only a few weeks ago, we got our first look at the upcoming live-action adaptation of One Piece that is set to get released on Netflix at some point this year. We’ve had rumors that the series is eyeing a late August release, which would work with a strong promotional front during this year’s Geeked Week, which is very likely going to arrive in June. The adaptation spearheaded by showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda has been hinted as one of Netflix’s big hopes to have a new Stranger Things on their hand, which isn’t too surprising given just how big of a seller the manga is.

    Now, we haven’t heard much about their future plans for this adaptation, as Netflix tends to wait quite a bit before giving any renewals or updates for their projects. The Witcher might be the only real exception where we got a renewal for a second season ahead of its launch. Yet, we know that some projects are written before they’re even renewed such as The Sandman and even the canceled Cowboy Bebop. Now, a new listing on the Writers Guild of America West may have hinted that script work may already have started for One Piece‘s potential second season.

    First things first, this is not a confirmation that Netflix already renewed the show for a second season. As mentioned previously, we’ve had cases where they worked ahead of time hoping to jump into the next production cycle without losing time to prepare the scripts; something ironically Stranger Things didn’t do for its last season, as their writing room didn’t come together until after the release of the latest season. Still, it’s an interesting inclusion for not just one but multiple writers that were already listed on the WGA directory to be involved with a second season.

    One Piece showrunner Matt Owens‘ WGA page has an interesting addition that states he’s acting as Executive Producer on One Piece with a “Season Count” of two. He’s only mentioned as a showrunner for one season, but the addition of a second season for his role as Executive Producer is quite a curious addition, especially as he’s not the only one to have this season count.

    The only oddity is the time window of 2022 to 2024 not matching with the showrunner designation of 2023 to 2024. Comparing it to co-showrunner Steven Maeda, the time window is given from 2022 to 2023. So, it’s odd that the production year is missing as when compared to other writers it normally is included in the timeframe. It should also be noted that Maeda does not have a second season mentioned on his WGA writer’s page as of now.

    Now, what makes this so interesting is that Owens isn’t the only writer from the first season with a second-season count included. Ian Stokes, who wrote the second and seventh episodes, also has a season count of two for his role as co-Executive Producer. Fellow Episode 7 writers Lindsay Gelfand and Allison Weintraub also have two seasons included for One Piece with their shared title of Executive Story Editor.

    The reason this is worth noting is that unlike IMDb not anyone can just sign up and add information to the WGA directory. As pointed out by the site, this is either verified independently by the WGAW as well as the WGAE (Writer’s Guild of America East), or information uploaded by the writers themselves. Not just anyone can make an account and upload information, which adds a little something to this inclusion but still is not a full confirmation. There’s a chance that is added accidentally or just in preparation for a potential second season if given the renewal, as they may have started at least mapping out the Alabasta Saga, which would be the focus in a second season after the East Blue.

    To also contrast it, Wednesday has officially been renewed and that is something the WGA has added directly to the main site of the show with a production window of 2023 to 2024 (very likely just a temporary addition as we have no official production timeline). We don’t know if they’ve already worked on the scripts for a second season ahead of time, but curiously staff writer April G. Blair, for example, does not have a writing credit for the second season while Executive Producer and co-writer Kayla S. Alpert does.

    So, it’s unclear if Blair may have returned for the second season’s writing room or generally moved on to a different project. There’s a good chance that these additions are mainly for producing credits and showcasing that work on the second season’s overarching plotlines may be worked on rather than singular scripts per episode. We still don’t have the credit for One Piece‘s fourth episode even though most have been uploaded in January.

    Another comparison to highlight how WGA works is that Lauren S. Hissrich, the showrunner for The Witcher, is listed for a season count of four, which has been confirmed and they haven’t even released the third season yet. At the moment, it is still eyeing a Summer 2023 release, which will mark the final appearance of Henry Cavill in the iconic role of Gerald of Rivia but would match with them starting work on the scripts for the next season ahead of its release.

    If there ever was a show that had a good chance to pull in a big viewership for a second season, it is One Piece. We’ve seen more of this project than even the other two major players rumored to release this year, the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Three-Body Problem. It doesn’t mean anything definite but if they are starting to map out a second season, they can jump into production as soon as they can once a renewal is given to avoid an issue like Stranger Things having way too long breaks between seasons. Maybe it’s a little hopeful but the potential is there.
