  • ‘STAR WARS’: Roles Thought to be Bound for a New Series are Instead Set for ‘The Mandalorian’

‘STAR WARS’: Roles Thought to be Bound for a New Series are Instead Set for ‘The Mandalorian’

Late last year, before there was any sort of official confirmation regarding The Mandalorian spin-offs, reports came out announcing a couple of roles that were supposed to be destined for one of those shows. The roles, labeled “Drash” and “Skad”, were both for British-sounding supporting characters, one male and one female, both in their late teens/early twenties, both members of a street crew.

In what can only be assumed as either as a small mistake made in the initial reports or as a natural evolution of the writing process of these shows, we can now confirm that these two characters will instead be appearing alongside Pedro Pascal‘s Din Djarin in the third season of The Mandalorian, in what seem to be the first additions to the cast after the record-setting season 2. With Grogu having left the show (or did he?) to be trained by Luke Skywalker, both “Drash” and “Skad” might turn out to be two characters that will try to fill that gap, as Din Djarin will need someone close to interact with.

After a cameo-filled second season that paved the way to several spin-off announcements by introducing to live-action Star Wars characters like Bo-Katan, Cobb Vanth, Ahsoka Tano and bringing back Boba Fett, The Mandalorian’s third season might be returning to the template used on season one, by focusing mostly on new characters, created specifically for the show.

The Mandalorian season 3 will begin filming shortly and is set for a 2022 release. 2021 should still bring us its first spin-off, as the Boba Fett and Fennec Shand centered The Book of Boba Fett, staring Tamuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen, is set for release this December, only on Disney+.

  • BREAKING: Disney Sticking to ‘Black Widow’s Theatrical Release

BREAKING: Disney Sticking to ‘Black Widow’s Theatrical Release

The Walt Disney Company’s 2021 Annual Meeting of Shareholders was held today. Among the topics approached was, once again, the possibility of Marvel’s Black Widow being made available to its global audiences through Disney+ Premier Access in the coming weeks. Following the Mulan‘s and Raya and the Last Dragon’s simultaneous theatrical and Disney+ release, the idea of the first MCU movie since Spider-Man: Far From Home, which debuted over 20 months ago, being made available through Disney’s streaming service has been gathering fans ever since it’s first release date wasn’t met, back in May 2020. Now, Disney CEO Bob Chapek had the following to say on its upcoming release:

Next up is Marvel’s highly anticipated spy thriller Black Widow featuring an All-Star cast that includes Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson currently set for release in theaters on May 7 I know Marvel fans have been looking forward to this film for a long time and I promise you it’s well worth the wait it’s absolutely fantastic.

As such, Disney has made no changes to what is still expected to be a theatrical-only release, this coming May 7th. With theaters planning on reopening in several cities across the US, even if at a lower capacity rate than before, Disney seems confident that audiences, perhaps driven by the growing number of COVID-19 vaccines being administered, will show up. They hope that it will make the nationwide theatrical release a success. This news doesn’t mean that we will be returning to business as usual, as the movie’s run may probably be shortened, being made available at home earlier than movies of this magnitude usually are.

We still have a couple of months until Black Widow is set for release, and as with almost everything these days a lot can change in eight weeks. We’ll see if this bold strategy pays off.

  • Where ‘WANDAVISION’ Excelled

    Where ‘WANDAVISION’ Excelled

Eight weeks have passed since the WandaVision premiere and we’re now finally able to look back at the show as a whole. Being the first Marvel Studios production to use the more traditional television episodic format we knew from the start that its end product would differ from the usual theatrical releases, and we got exactly that. What audiences would probably not be expecting, especially coming from the MCU, was that the show would pack such a huge emotional punch.

Marvel movies have always been characterized by the brilliance of the action pieces, the larger-than-life characters, and the growing spectacle that’s been developing in every single theatrical release for over a decade. We’ve certainly have had our share of emotional moments throughout, but the biggest ones have always been towards characters that have been developed in several movies, with an immense amount of screentime at their disposal. When this is the case, it’s easier to connect with audiences for the simple fact that those characters have been there for the amount of time that they have, and attachments are naturally created.

But WandaVision manages to accomplish the same thing with characters that were either just now added into the MCU or that have had limited screentime ever since their introduction, which is hardly easy. Many fans already had a soft spot for both Wanda or/and The Vision and that obviously helped, but the writing on the show was competent enough to take that to a whole new level, as they brought both Billy and Tommy along for the ride.

The show was always, at the core, about family. About the family we lose, the family we gain, the family we cherish, the family that makes us who we are, and perhaps most importantly, the family that makes us want to be better, something Wanda ended up doing by the end of the show. WandaVision was brilliant in the way it showed us just how much family truly means, how far we’re willing to go to bring happiness to the ones we love, even if sometimes in a somewhat (to put it mildly) selfish manner. Wanda and Vision’s love for each other and their children became as real as it gets, with them always wearing their hearts on their sleeves regarding the twins. They were always the first thing on their minds whenever danger was looming, and even Wanda’s immediate reflex when seeing that both would be gone if she released everybody from the Hex was to save them, not the entire town even if she knew that was what needed to be done. She showed us that she would put everything on the line just the keep them beside her. But as soon as she understood what needed to happen, she left them with words that only enhance their importance to her, and that quite possibly are even a small hint of events still to come:

You know… a family is forever. We could never truly leave each other, even if we tried.

If WandaVision was about Wanda discovering a new family that filled her need for one, we’re sure to be getting Wanda searching for her lost children as the following chapters of her MCU story unfold. It appears that she hasn’t quite given up on it, and bringing back the twins seems like quite the priority, as the post-credit scene seems to suggest. The seeds of this newfound meaning to her journey were planted in the season that just ended, in what is perhaps the greatest achievement of the entire show.

  • A Thing isn’t Beautiful Because It Lasts: Why Marvel Studios Should Not Recast T’Challa

A Thing isn’t Beautiful Because It Lasts: Why Marvel Studios Should Not Recast T’Challa

It’s never easy dealing with tragedy. Even when the path that presents itself afterward turns out to be a pretty straightforward one, there are always doubts, people second-guess themselves and insecurities creep in making the simplest of choices often overbearing. The personal aspect should always remain the main focus when addressing loss, as dealing with all the intricate complexities of human emotion is often its own struggle. But in the past few months, as the world still dealt with the loss of such an incredible talent and such a singular person in Chadwick Boseman, the professional side of things, his legacy as Marvel’s live-action Black Panther, a role that was long overdue in the dignity it brought to the character, to its nation and its people, came to a crossroad. Should the role be recast? How should the studio deal with his passing? Besides the egregious choice of going the GCI route to artificially keep his likeness assigned to the role, I’m sure there isn’t a right or a wrong choice to be made. But on a personal level, being asked to make a decision, either way, recasting really should not be considered as to further imbue both his name and his performance in the role with the dignity he too presented us with.

First of all, we should take notice of how and why certain iconic roles have been recast in the past. You can find several examples of studios making this choice, ranging from superhero movies (BatmanSupermanSpider-Man) to literary adaptations (Jack RyanMilleniumJames Bond), from Oscar winners (Silence of the LambsLord of the Rings) to some of the biggest franchises ever (Star TrekStar Wars). But what most of them have in common is that when something radical like this happens it’s usually because we’re either talking about a reboot of the property or the story’s timeline itself doesn’t allow for the actor to return to the part for being the wrong age. Other than that it’s mostly unheard of to change a leading actor with someone the same age while trying to maintain continuity. So being, there is little precedent to something like this happening on as big of a role as T’Challa’s, especially for the reason of his possible recast. And there seem to even be a few particulars, considering both the part itself and the MCU as a whole, that should make Marvel Studios not even consider a recast of the part.

    The Cinematic Universe

Being that reboots are the main reason most roles of this magnitude are recast, it would certainly be easier for that to happen if the Black Panther franchise were not such an established component of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The interconnectivity of Marvel Studios’ serialized storytelling has a lot of advantages but also a few drawbacks, and if certain IP’s success might spread to other less known ones to their benefit, a problem with one of the movies could easily affect the entirety of the project. So being, to keep playing with the character and to keep making it a central focus of its own movies, you would need to straight-up reboot of the franchise, something that isn’t going to happen. Recasting the role, something Marvel has done it before (Rhodey, Bruce Banner) and will do again (Cassie Lang), has never been done on this scale, since none of those performances were close to being as iconic as what Chadwick delivered. It would be almost impossible to do it justice and in the case of the MCU, and with no reboot on the horizon, one would probably just need to accept the role to be gone.

    The Mantle

Unlike most other MCU characters, the Black Panther part has built-in characteristics, already explained in the movies, that would make it easy for T’Challa to pass the torch to another character, be it an already established one or not. Having presented the Black Panther as a mantle that’s passed on from one ruler to another, it would make in-universe sense for another one to don the title in T’Challa’s absence, allowing for the franchise to continue moving forward without major issues. You would still need a reason for why T’Challa would be gone but as his passing is something everyone is aware of, the most honest thing to do would be to address it as it is, in the most respectful way possible. Again, we can find several examples where this has happened in other franchises, Star Wars being one. So being, in-universe it would make the most sense to leave T’Challa behind but still continue with his legacy through a new Black Panther. Much in the same way that T’Challa was inspired by his own father to be a better man, and a better king than he ever was, this new Black Panther would keep his predecessor close, guiding him on his journey.

    The Setting

You don’t need T’Challa to explore the Wankandan world and its way of life, so that is something that wouldn’t go to waste even if Marvel doesn’t feel comfortable with the passing of the torch. Most other earth-based MCU characters are pretty much living in familiar places, where exploring their surroundings won’t bring us, as the audience, to anywhere new. But Wakanda is a completely different beast. If Marvel decides not to recast and at the same time, for some reason, not pass on the Black Panther mantle to another character, they’re still left with an incredible world to explore within the Black Panther mythos. Even if T’Challa and the Black Panther are such important parts of what made everybody fall in love with the Wakanda Ryan Coogler managed to bring to the big screen, you can still produce compelling and imaginative content without having to leave the fictional nation’s borders. That is indeed something that seems to be in the minds at Marvel Studios, as a Disney+ series with this premise seems to be on the horizon.

    The Source Material

Not recasting T’Challa would mean that we will have seen the last of the character in the MCU and that would obviously hurt as there are still many stories waiting to be told with the character at the forefront. But unlike other properties where leaving someone out of the movie/tv series would mean we would “lose” that particular character, the fact that the entirety of the MCU has been based on storylines developed in the comics that are still ongoing, you could easily follow a new iteration of the Black Panther on-screen but still connect with T’Challa every Wednesday when new comics are released. You’d miss Boseman‘s T’Challa as he wouldn’t be there to tell us its story on the big screen, perhaps even accentuating his legacy attached to the character, but the character would be allowed to live on through the medium where it has thrived for decades. This way you would keep the MCU’s T’Challa as Chadwick‘s alone while allowing the character to live on and still be appreciated by new generations of fans through the comics, all while a new Black Panther rises in the MCU. The same has already happened with both Iron Man and Steve Rogers. We didn’t get to explore their entire back catalog and those stories will now only be available to audiences through comics.

    Whoever comes next

I understand the T’Challa part is now probably coveted by several remarkable actors that would do the part justice. But if we’re honest about it, the part, in what live-action is concerned, is forever Chadwick‘s. Any actor would probably be more reasonable if they looked to honor him through the reverence paid to his performance in the actions of their own character, as they took the Black Panther mantle upon themselves, from their predecessor T’Challa. The pressure to take the role and not try to emulate Boseman, but to give audiences a new take on the character would be hard to handle as there is no right way to do it. It would probably be best to allow whoever gets to be the next Black Panther, to be given free rein on their performance by staying away from T’Challa’s shadow.

As I said right at the start of the article, there’s hardly a right way to approach this going forward. But with Ryan Coogler already discussing his Black Panther 2 ideas with the sequel’s cast, it shouldn’t take long until we figure out what his approach will turn out to be. Let us support it no matter what it ends up being.

‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ Set Photos Reveal Miek’s New Power Suit

Following set photos depicting a brand new Asgardian play featuring Matt Damon and Luke HemsworthMelissa McCarthy’s cameo, and Sam Neill’s return, we now continue the deluge of leaked pics from the fourth Thor installment with new looks at Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder as well as big hints on the brand new look Miek might have on the upcoming movie.

    https://twitter.com/Marvel_TH/status/1367038578664960001?s=19

The new photo seem to take place around Thor arriving at New Asgard via his goats, Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, and a glimpse of the new look Miek will be sporting in the film. Both goats had already been sighted a few weeks back, but we now get much clearer looks at the animatronics production is using to depict them on set, to make it easier for actors to interact with what are sure to be mostly CGI characters when it’s all said and done. The goats are heavily featured in Jason Aaron’s Thor run, which is also being referer to in two other major ways in Thor: Love and Thunder: The introduction of the villain Gorr, The God Butcher (Christian Bale), and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) wielding Mjölnir and thus becoming The Mighty Thor.

These new set photos also give us a look at Miek, reminding us of an old Taika Waititi statement during an Instagram live broadcast where he watched Thor: Ragnarok along with fans, that Miek would feature brand new exoskeletons in the following movie, including one clearly resembling a female figure. He then went on to share a few of the looks his team had been working on, and one of them seems to have been now caught on camera.

Thor: Love and Thunder is currently filming in Australia with a release date of May 6th, 2022.

  • ‘WANDAVISION’: Meet Wanda Maximoff

    ‘WANDAVISION’: Meet Wanda Maximoff

All the initial weirdness surrounding its approach to storytelling hasn’t stopped WandaVision from coming through with a big part of what the MCU Disney+ shows set out to accomplish: Substance-filled deeper dives into each character they decide to focus on. Something that the runtime of the movies never seemed to allow. At least not at this scale.

Even with the hexposition-heavy episode we got this week, that some might not enjoy, it’s hard not to acknowledge that every sequence was carefully set up so we, the viewers, got the payoff of all those years of either only getting glimpses or only hearing about Wanda’s tragic youth, and not less painful adulthood. But for that to happen it took slowing things down, spending time with the character every week, seeing her go through a somewhat mundane hexistence (I’ll stop)living her life, as we took it all in, sometimes not even fully understanding that what initially might have seemed to be holding back the plot of the show, is what made it even more meaningful in the end.

We all got to know characters like Tony Stark or Steve Rogers pretty well. Each had its own trilogy of films and was the central focus of more than one Avengers movie. As for Wanda and Vision, like most other MCU characters, they seemed to inhabit a smaller space where their own interests were rarely under the spotlight, where context was often lacking and their paths seemed to follow along with the story being told have little say in which steps to take next. But WandaVision, in that regard, is a gamechanger, to a point where one could argue that Wanda has now become one of the most examined MCU characters, something that served her well. We were given the chance, and the time, to follow her most profound life experiences that are just now culminating in was is sure to become a character-defining season finale, propelling The Scarlet Witch into Phase 4 of the MCU.

Taking into account how the character-study WandaVision ultimately became, making it clear how Wanda now has the potential to be one of the most interesting and complex inhabitants of the MCU, it’s perhaps safe to assume that other shows might follow its lead. Previously established characters that weren’t given the time to be properly presented to audiences, in all their intricacy, may get that change down the line, and new ones will use the combined runtime of their own show’s episodes to make the usual MCU origin-story something of the past, turning it into something bigger.

All it took for us to get here was for audiences to allow themselves to take things slower, not to rush to the end, and not to seek that every single question should be answered as fast as possible. Just like some great meals, if you leave it simmering you might just end up getting the best out of each ingredient. In Wanda’s case, we can now safely say we got to meet the real her, and not just the flashy Avenger we had grown accustomed to. Here’s hoping that the streaming side of the MCU lets us continue to do the same with others.

  • UPDATE: ‘Star Wars: The Bad Batch’ To Premiere on May the 4th

UPDATE: ‘Star Wars: The Bad Batch’ To Premiere on May the 4th

UPDATE: It looks Collider was indeed right after all since less than two hours after the initial news came out, LucasFilm confirmed the May 4 release date for the upcoming series.

On StarWars.com there was further information regarding the release schedule. It was made clear that the unusual release day (for Disney+), a Tuesday, is due to the fact that May 4 is, as we all know, Star Wars Day. The following episodes will be released on Fridays as The Mandalorian, with the first one being made available on May 7th.

    Source: StarWars.com

According to Collider, The Star Wars Clone Wars spin-off The Bad Batch is now set for a May 4th premiere on Disney+. However that same report ended up getting deleted shortly after, and the link is no longer available. Luckily, The Direct was able to quote the article before it got taken down, announcing a May 4 release date. Announced in July 2020, the animated series will follow the Clone Force 99, which is also known as the titular Bad Batch. They were the focus of The Clone Wars‘ last season’s first storyline. It will take place in the post-Clone Wars era, which will see the uniquely skilled clones take on mercenary work as they transition into a new life. It was during Disney’s Investor Day back in December that when we found out that the series will premiere in 2021. They also released the first footage, so we were hotly anticipating the actual release date.

The Bad Batch is yet another Disney+ exclusive that will expand the Star Wars franchise after The Mandalorian‘s success. If this debut date proves true, it looks like the streaming service is experimenting with different release schedules for its shows since both The Mandalorian and WandaVision was released on Fridays. The animated show would then break the mold with a Tuesday premiere as the service starts to expand, showing us that Disney is looking for ways to release multiple episodes every week without them cannibalizing each other. The May 4th release would set The Bad Batch to premiere right before Black Widow hits theaters and a couple of weeks before Loki will have its first episode made available. It will be interesting to see if the release of Collider’s article was just an accident or if it was released early, ahead of a scheduled official announcement.

  • ‘ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA’: Evangeline Lilly Confirms Summer Production Start

‘ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA’: Evangeline Lilly Confirms Summer Production Start

We’ve been getting a lot of first looks at various Marvel Studios productions. We got our first look at the Thor: Love and Thunder set as they are ramping up production in Australia. Now, we were wondering if any other films might also be slowly starting, such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The Wasp herself, Evangeline Lilly, was surprisingly candid when addressing the Ant-Man threequel’s upcoming shooting start. It looks like we’re pleased to see that it won’t take long for the project that will feature Kang the Conqueror, and that is likely will give yet another Young Avenger in Cassie Lang’s Stature. If you scroll through the following Instagram post, you can see her confirm a potential summer production start.

This revelation confirms our own report from June 2020, that principal photography is set to begin this summer. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will once again have Peyton Reed in the director’s seat. He will be the second Marvel Cinematic Universe director to have a complete trilogy under his belt. He is following Spider-Man‘s Jon Watts, who is currently directing his still-untitled third installment. Stars Paul Rudd and the aforementioned Evangeline Lilly will be returning alongside Michael Douglas and Michelle PfeifferJonathan Majors and Kathryn Newton will be making their franchise debuts in the threequel. It will be interesting to see how this film connects to the last entry in the franchise and potentially build upon the current rumors of a multiversal storyline.

  • RUMOR: Mena Massoud is the Front Runner to Play Live-Action Ezra Bidger

RUMOR: Mena Massoud is the Front Runner to Play Live-Action Ezra Bidger

Kessel Run Transmissions report has been released that places Aladdin‘s Mena Massoud as the main choice to play Star Wars Rebels‘ Ezra Bridger in the upcoming Ahsoka Tano live-action series. This series will continue where Ahsoka’s The Mandalorian cameo left off, with Ahsoka searching for Grand Admiral Thrawn as he is the one who may lead her to Ezra after he disappeared in the animated show’s finale. Mena Massoud has worked with Disney before in the aforementioned Aladdin, so it seems Disney should be pretty sure about their choice to play the Lothal native.

Besides Rosario Dawson who will be playing the titular character, this is the first major casting news regarding the show, one of the two The Mandalorian spin-offs, the other being Rangers of the New Republic. The show was announced during the Disney Investor Day on December 10, 2020, and will be developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. If they are already casting the show’s main characters, it could be a sign that they are already eyeing a production start. Star Wars may try to replicate Marvel Studios’ formula of releasing a new show so that most of the year is filled with content. We could also see them switch between each show to better spread it out throughout the year. Either way, Massoud would be an amazing choice to play the iconic character from the Rebels animated series. It could also be a clue that we might get some casting information on Admiral Thrawn in the coming months.
