    ‘WandaVision’ Episode 7 Primer

Note:  Arlyn Murphy will be back on the job next week!

Last week’s episode of WandaVision, The All-New Halloween Spooktacular, was highly anticipated by fans and it didn’t disappoint. From the great looks at characters in their classic costumes to the interesting and informative chat between Wanda and “Pietro”, to the twins beginning to use their powers, to the crazy last few minutes that saw Vision get “House of M’d” and hex expand to include S.W.O.R.D. headquarters and turn it into a circus, fans got a lot packed into a short time. Fans were also left, as usual, with more questions than answers but with only 3 episodes left, we know the answers are coming soon!

One of the biggest questions still out there is who exactly is doing this. In last week’s primer, Arlyn speculated that while we are being led to believe that Wanda is in charge, she might be under someone else’s control similar to how Doctor Doom manipulated her in The Children’s Crusade. There are no shortage of fan theories out there as to who that someone could be, but after Episode 6, Agnes seems to be the prime suspect. As we discussed on the podcast, Episode 6 seemed to confirm that while everyone in Westview is being controlled, only the residents who are part of the main plot of each of Wanda’s “episodes” seem to be active. It’s sort of like a video game where there’s a whole world out there, but the game only renders what needs to be on screen. During Vision’s exploration of Westview, Agnes was the only “non-active resident”  of Wanda’s fantasy who seemed to be able to speak and be aware of what was happening. With only 3 episodes left, it’s growing increasingly unlikely that there’s enough time to introduce an entirely new antagonist and get their story told in a reasonable amount of time, so Agnes stands out as the best choice for the one pulling the strings. Of course, there’s still the growing threat of Tyler Hayward’s stubborn ignorance and after Wanda’s hexpansion, it’s almost certain that he’s bound to overreact.

    Assumptions

Episode 7 is rumored to be another shorter episode, with a runtime of 38 minutes. That means the last 2 episodes would be a little bit longer, so 7 is likely to serve as our last “setup” episode before we really get down to that big Marvel Studios action film Kevin Feige promised us when he introduced WandaVision at SDCC ’19. With that in mind, we have to think about what would get us from “here” to “there” in a short episode. It’s grown apparent to me that the twins are much more integral to the plot of the series than I originally thought, so it seems like a safe bet that something is going to happen to them very soon that will push us down the path towards resolution. We’re also likely going to see Monica finally come into her powers, Hayward make one, last desperate attempt and then the realization that this is a threat that can’t be handled by the clowns at S.W.O.R.D. With Wanda’s hex threatening reality, there’s only one guy for the job: the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth!

Episode 7 of WandaVision will stream tomorrow!

  • ‘Stargirl’ John Wesley Shipp To Guest Star in Season 2

‘Stargirl’ John Wesley Shipp To Guest Star in Season 2

Production on Stargirl has been going on for quite some time now and should be wrapping quite soon. The show’s upcoming sophomore season still has no release date but will move from DC Universe to the CW network. Not much is known about this season aside from the fact that we will see an ever-expanding Justice Society with the likes of Jade and Jakeem Thunder joining their ranks. One thing that fans have been dying for is a better look at the past by getting to see the original Justice Society in action before their eventual demise at the hands of the Injustice Society. Well, it seems fans will be getting a blast from the past from this upcoming season, with at least one episode set to feature a throwback to the team in their prime.

Entertainment Weekly has exclusively learned that John Wesley Shipp is set to reprise his role as the golden age Flash in the upcoming second season of Stargirl. Shipp has been a staple in The Flash since the show’s early days, having played Barry’s father, Henry Allen to playing Jay Garrick from Earth-2 and even suiting back up as his original character from the 90’s series. Shipp is set to appear in episode nine of this upcoming season. Garrick will officially be established as the Flash of the past JSA, the first taste of the Arrowverse crossing over into Stargirl. Reportedly Shipp will only appear in this episode, as it’s described as a “Pivotal flashback episode”.

Stargirl season 2 will see the return of Brec Bassinger as the titular star-spangled hero as well as Luke Wilson as S.T.R.I.P.E as they face off against this season’s big bad, the angel of vengeance himself Eclipso, played by Nick Tarabay.

  • First ‘Mortal Kombat’ Promises R-Rated Action

First ‘Mortal Kombat’ Promises R-Rated Action

It has been a long wait but finally, the first trailer to Warner Bros.’s latest adaptation of the iconic Mortal Kombat franchise has been released. Originally the film was going to debut in January but was postponed, while the production company tried to figure out how to approach the upcoming year. Now, it is included in WB’s new hybrid strategy, where they premiere their entire 2021 line-up simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters.

    https://twitter.com/MKMovie/status/1362432505236783105?s=20

The trailer starts with a bank, as we see poor Jax’s defeat at the hands of Sub-Zero. It includes teases of the film’s impressive cast of characters from the game. Lewis Tan is also playing an original character that will be introduced as the viewer’s surrogate. It also looks like Kano might have a very different role once the film starts, as we see him on the side of Earthrealm. He is famous for betraying people, so they might have some larger plans moving forward.

The trailer certainly promises some great-looking action sequences. It also stayed true to Mortal Kombat traditions by having Sub-Zero and Skorpion fight each in the first trailer. It also confirms that they will embrace the R-rating that made the franchise so iconic and controversial back in the day. The moment Sub-Zero turns blood into a frozen dagger was a really impressive showcase of what is possible with these characters. We also got a variety of character posters some time ago, which highlighted the film’s massive cast. I cannot wait to see it when it premieres on April 16th.

  • Danny Elfman to Score ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

Danny Elfman to Score ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

According to a report from Inverse, Danny Elfman has confirmed that he has begun working on the score for Marvel Studios Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This marks a return to the MCU for Elfman, who scored 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and a superhero reunion between Elfman and director Sam Raimi as the two collaborated on the first two Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man films.

Elfman will now have made his mark on 5 decades worth of superhero films, having scored 1989’s Batman, 1990’sDarkman, the aforementioned Spidey films in the 00s, Age of Ultron in 2015 and now the Doctor Strange sequel in 2021. The gig also sees him once again at work with Raimi, with whom he’s collaborated many times in the past. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has mentioned that the sequel will tie into the upcoming third MCU Spider-Man film and with abundant rumors that the film will feature Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man via some multiversal shenanigans, Raimi and Elfman’s collaboration seems more than coincidental. It looks like the doors are about to be blown open on the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse!

  • Reality Starts to Crumble in New ‘WandaVision’ Clip

Reality Starts to Crumble in New ‘WandaVision’ Clip

Episode 7 of WandaVision is almost upon us and with only 3 episodes left to go, the other shoe is about to drop. The new clip shows us that Wanda’s dream reality is beginning to fall apart and that her son Billy’s powers are starting to grow. After expanding the hex, it appears that Wanda is having trouble controlling the reality right around her. After last week’s demonstration of what’s happening to those not directly involved in each “moment”, it’s terrifying to think what’s happening to those folks now that Wanda’s unable to control the things happening around her. The clip also showcases how the episode makes great use of Modern Family’s faux-documentary style ahead of what is likely the last “sitcom” episode.

Could Billy’s comments that his head feels weird because of all the noise be linked to those inside the hex who are suffering because of what Wanda’s doing? What will the boys do about it? We’ll start to learn the answers tomorrow when Episode 7 of WandaVision streams on Disney Plus.

  • Donald Glover Leaves FX For Multi-Year Contract with Amazon

Donald Glover Leaves FX For Multi-Year Contract with Amazon

Fans of superstar Donald Glover often find themselves discussing his long list of accomplishments. It looks like they can add another multi-year contract to that list. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Glover has exited his previous arrangement with Disney and FX to enter a contract with Amazon, which is reportedly worth eight-figures. The deal includes multiple projects, which will air as part of a content channel that is dedicated to Glover. His brother Stephen Glover, frequent writing partner and co-creator of Atlanta, also signed over to Amazon as part of the deal. The first content to come out of the signing will most likely be a new Mr. and Mrs. Smith reboot, which was announced via Instagram only days ago. Glover will be joined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who skyrocketed to stardom with Amazon’s hit Fleabag.

In addition to starring in various projects, the actor-musician will also produce several new series. One of these is in early development, which will go by Hive. The show will center around a Beyonce-like figure and includes former First Daughter Malia Obama as part of the writing staff. Hive‘s showrunner will be Janine Nabers, who is best known for her work on HBO’s Watchmen.

Luckily for fans, this move will not affect the fan-favorite show, Atlanta. The Emmy-award-winning FX series already got renewed for two more seasons. The third season will enter production in March. It’s been almost three years since the second season aired in 2018. Luckily, Glover took to his social media recently to ensure viewers that writing for the future of the show is going very well. The next seasons are aiming to air back-to-back.

  • ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s Pyra and Mythra Join ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’

‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s Pyra and Mythra Join ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’

I really did not expect that announcement for the latest fighter joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The latest Nintendo Direct started with a drawn-out cutscene from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It build-up to a sudden revelation that the character Pyra has officially joined the Super Smash Bros. game’s second character pass. Not just that but the trailer also confirms that you will be able to play as Mythra. You have the ability to switch between both characters at any time during combat, so they aren’t just separate skins.

A long time ago, the game’s director Masahiro Sakurai did confirm that they originally wanted to include a character from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 as the original game’s roster. So, it looks like he was finally able to accomplish that task. It is a bit strange to follow-up Sepiroth with another anime-styled sword fighter. Their addition has been a long-running joke for many that enjoy the iconic game.

Still, she looks like a fun addition and could bring something unique to the table, especially as you can switch between two unique characters throughout the combat. Here’s hoping that the leftover fighters will embrace more of gaming’s history. I hope to see Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Ninja Gaiden’s Hayabusa join the fray at some point. There is a wide variety to choose from in gaming history that it must be difficult to choose the right characters to include. Let’s be honest, at this point anything is possible with the iconic Super Smash Bros. franchise.

  • ‘WandaVision’: Brought to You By HYDRA

‘WandaVision’: Brought to You By HYDRA

At this point, I think everyone had a theory about something when it comes to WandaVision. We have only three more episodes to go and no idea what is going on. Hopefully, next week will signal the beginning of the end as all the mysteries surrounding this mini-series are unraveled. We’ve been theorizing ever since the first episode, which resulted in various ideas like a build-up to Secret WarsDottie’s role in the story, and Agnes’ involvement with the hex. At this point, it feels like everything got theorized, and nothing is left. There is still some time until the next episode drops, so why not just throw one more theory in for good measure. I believe that the story might not be as magical as we first thought it was. What if it is a plot by HYDRA to restore the Infinity Stones?

The main reason for this theory lies in Hayward’s strange behavior as of late. He seems rather angry towards powered individuals, which was a far departure from his first introduction. Once he took over, SWORD had a new focus on artificial intelligence. That was something that HYDRA put a lot of focus on when they developed for Project Insight. The Direct’s Liam Crowley had an interesting theory that the SWORD acting director may be Ultron in human disguise. It is possible, but the way the new Marvel Cinematic Universe organization seems to be echoing SHIELD’s Phase 2 plans could be a good hint something is afoot. After SHIELD fell in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, SWORD may have been overlooked in the chaos.

There is also the fact that Wanda’s origins got linked to the organization within this universe. Baron Wolfgang von Strucker had a big hand in activating her abilities through the Mind Stone. After its destruction at the hands of Thanos, they have been trying for a way to harness its power. Vision’s remnants were the perfect opportunity now that Wanda was snapped and couldn’t stop them. As there were no remnants left, they might’ve realized the best way to access the stone’s abilities was through Wanda. Once she returned, they had a golden opportunity. Why else was he laid out on a table like that after all this time?

There is also the loose connection that Agathe Harkness has with HYDRA. We still believe that Agnes turns out to be the iconic witch from Marvel Comics. There was a version in the Ultimate universe that was once part of a seven-headed Hydra. They could’ve taken inspiration from that aspect and made her part of the organization’s mythology that has gotten explored on Agents of SHIELD. It’s a bit of a longshot, but at this point, almost anything is possible with WandaVision. I couldn’t resist throwing in one more crazy theory into the batch.

  • First Look at HBO Max’s ‘Aquaman: King of Atlantis’ Revealed

First Look at HBO Max’s ‘Aquaman: King of Atlantis’ Revealed

In January of 2020, before the world descended into madness, HBO Max revealed a new original was in the works for the service titled Aquaman: King of Atlantis. The series will follow the new king of Atlantis, Arthur Curry, as he starts his reign of the underwater civilization. Aquaman is joined by his friends Mera and Vulko. They are there to help him learn the Atlantean ways so that he’ll become the best king he can be. He tries his best to gain the love and trust of his people. He will also have to face his evil half-brother, evil elders, and surface dwellers. After a long wait, a trailer for Cartoon Network’s rebranding gave us our first official look at the upcoming series.

We got our first look at the upcoming series, with no release date and no voice cast, its interesting to see that production on the series seems to have already ramped up. The short snippet gives us our first look at Aquaman and Mera, as the two seem ready for combat. The animation seems to be incredibly similar to Thundercats ROAR!, a CalArts-style reboot on the classic feline warriors from the ’80s.

The series currently has no release date but is set to release exclusively on HBO Max. It is unclear if Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, or Willem Dafoe will be reprising their roles from the film since it’s supposed to serve as a follow-up. The only real concrete creative information known is that James Wan is involved and s serving as executive producer. Hopefully, we will get a full trailer with more cast details soon to get a feeling for which direction the show is heading and how it may tie into the overarching DC Extended Universe.

  • ‘The Old Guard’s Marwan Kenzari Confirmed for ‘Black Adam’

‘The Old Guard’s Marwan Kenzari Confirmed for ‘Black Adam’

While Black Adam may have gotten removed from the studio’s release slate, nothing seems to be slowing down its production. Recently, news on the film has been scarce, as many fans were waiting on the edges of their seats to hear who else will join the film. It seems the most recent update is confirming a report we’ve known a few months back on the film’s villain. Hollywood Reporter has confirmed Illuminerdi’s story from October that Marwan Kenzari is joining the production.

While the official report states that Kenzari‘s role is still under wraps, we knew from just a few months ago that the studio was eyeing the actor to play Sabbac. He will be the main antagonist in the film’s ongoing story. The villain had three different comic iterations over the years, but the film will focus on Ishmael Gregor. He is the most well-known identity of Sabbac for those that read his short run. He was a Russian immigrant who made his way to New York, where he becomes a mob boss. Ishmael initiates a demonic ritual in which he sacrifices innocent people to gain the powers of the demon. His name is an acronym for Satan, Aym, Belial, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, and Crateis, the beings that give him his powers. This naming is quite similar to how Shazam’s name in the comic derives from six immortal elders. Those were Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury.

Black Adam currently has no set release date. Jaume Collet-Serra is directing the film, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will star as the titular character. Aldis HodgeSarah ShahiNoah Centineo, and Quintessa Swindell will round out the cast. We are still waiting on the casting for Doctor Fate.
