As shared by Knight Edge Media, Daniel Richtman teased that Charlie Cox is scheduled to start production later in May. He couldn’t offer any details but it does look like he’ll definitely have a larger role in this series than he did in No Way Home, which was mostly just a cameo appearance. We don’t know if he already has a history with Echo and how they might set up some elements from the original Daredevil series, if at all. As productions can always change, there’s always a chance that something in their schedule may shift.
There are rumblings we might see him in another Disney+ series and that he also has his own on the way at some point in the future. It’ll be interesting to see if Echo may act as a set-up for the spinoff Disney+ series. It does seem like we will get a lot more from Charlie Cox, who was the flagship actor of the Netflix spinoffs and catapulted the character of Daredevil to new highs. Here’s hoping that he may become just as important to the MCU’s future.
Only a few weeks after the Marvel Netflix series left their original service, they found. new home on Disney+. Yet, international viewers sadly missed out as some select markets didn’t receive the update. Some believed that it could be due to the Star branding becoming the go-to for most of Marvel’s more mature offerings like Logan or Deadpool. So, we’ve been anxiously awaiting any news on when we might expect these series. Luckily, it seems that a new e-mail from Disney+ Netherlands, as shared by Twitter user @heli5m, hints that the Netflix series are getting a June 29th release after all.
When we first learned about the Disney+ series getting added to the service in the US, it came through an e-mail provided by Canadian subscribers. It’s unsure why exactly there’s such a delayed release for specific markets, as they also have access to the Star branding. There’s a chance that some song licenses had to be renewed for those markets, or there were some aspects of the international markets that made the complete transfer of the rights a bit more complicated.
We can’t fully take this as a confirmation, but it is our first hint at a release within those markets that has been sorely lacking. When the first news dropped for the US release, there was radio silence on their expansion, especially with something that seemed like an easy thing to release worldwide. Still, we might get an official trailer or announcement in the near future to confirm.
Alongside Kate Bishop, Echo was one of the characters introduced by Hawkeye into the MCU. Played by Alaqua Cox, the character is slated for a self-titled spin-off in the near future. Information on the show has been kept under wraps but a new listing indicates that there are some major MCU appearances waiting to happen in the show. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are two of the names listed on the resume of the show’s costume designer Stacy Caballero.
Those two names shouldn’t come as a surprise given their character’s history in the comics. With the way Wilson Fisk’s stint in Hawkeye abruptly ended at the hands of Maya Lopez, it makes sense to see the character make a return. As for Daredevil, where there’s Wilson Fisk, there’s Matt Murdock.
This isn’t the first time some key information has been accidentally revealed through a personnel’s resume. Avengers: Endgame was infamously listed on the film’s cinematographer’s online resume which fans thought dubious at the time of the leak. Of course, there’s a slim chance this could be conjecture on Caballero’s part but all evidence points otherwise.
Just earlier today, we’ve reported that Marvel’s official website has added a new section called “On Screen Full Report” which details a character’s story from any adaptation. In the case of Matt Murdock’s Daredevil, everyone noticed that not only did it explore the Netflix series’ storyline for CharlieCox‘s take on the character, but even referenced that his return in Spider-Man: No Way Home took place “sometime later” after the events of Daredevil‘s Season 3. Now, the site has been updated and the MCU connection has been completely removed.
Orginally, the section had a reference to his time after Mysterio had Peter Parker’s identity outed and setting up his future return. It was swiftly followed by the mention of him, Karen and Foggy reforming their original law firm. Now, while that later bit is still included they’ve completely removed the Spider-Man: No Way Home section altogether. On the left you’ll see the original version while on the right the one missing the entire section on his time in the MCU.
It’s unclear what exactly has lead to them choosing to delete it once again, but the update and removing the MCU reference is definitely suspicious. It’s unclear why they’d change it right after publishing it, but the fact that the topic is making the rounds and the team behind it would like to avoid anyone making the connection. We’ll likely have to wait until Murdock’s return in a future project to get a better grasp on what story elements remain from the Netflix series, especially now that it has been added to Disney+.
The quest to discover whether or not Marvel Television’s Daredevil series is canon to the MCU has been a long and winding road. The show went from presumably canon during it’s run to losing it once it was canceled by Netflix, and the subsequent folding of the studio that created it. With little to no confirmation from Marvel Studios or the creatives behind the MCU, the question remained up in the air for years. Evidence was conjured up on both sides of the argument to prove their own theories. Then, late last year, Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox reprised their respective roles as Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock in two major MCU projects, opening the doors for speculation wider than ever before.
After the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Marvel website added Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s alternate universe wall-crawlers to their official character index. They were specified as non-MCU characters, and where the only non-MCU characters on the site to have their own “on screen” pages. All major characters officially under the MCU canon have separate tabs profiling their live-action appearances separately from their comic book history. However, there are no such pages for characters in films or television shows produced by a studio that is not Marvel Studios. Even the cast of Agents of SHIELD are reduced to quick video breakdowns. Yet, a recent addition to the site includes Daredevil, along with the rest of his Defenders co-stars, receiving their own “on screen full reports”.
Even more curious, Daredevil’s character page includes a full description of the character’s Netflix history, including all three seasons and his time with the Defenders. Yet, what stands out is that it ends with a sequential paragraph describing his role in No Way Home as happening “sometime later”. As for Fisk’s page, it includes a similar history but does not reference the events of his appearance in Hawkeye, despite using an image from the show as the web page’s header. The information is weirdly non-specific and doesn’t technically confirm anything, as it’s not clear who is updating the Marvel website or if it was some sort of mistake. Disney+ doesn’t help matters by simply grouping the former Netflix shows as The Defenders Saga in the streaming service. For now, it’s just an interesting detail that may give fans a hint at where Daredevil lies in the Sacred Timeline’s history.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a long history of building towards team-ups. After crafting its entire first phase around slowly forming the Avengers, the franchise doubled down and began to rapid-fire its groupings. Since 2012, fans have been treated to live-action versions of nearly everything, fromclassic assemblies like the Guardians of the Galaxy to original creations like the Revengers. Now, after years of speculation, fans are gearing up for what looks to be the next Marvel super team to transition from page to screen – the Midnight Sons. With all the supernatural projects currently in development at Marvel Studios, it seems like a give-in that the company will eventually bring its mystic heroes together for a grand battle against the dark arts. The only real question still lingering is who might make the final roster.
One character that seems like an obvious choice is Oscar Isaac‘s Moon Knight, whose titular Disney+ series is set to debut at the end of this month. The character is a longtime member of the team in the comics, and has strong ties to the worlds of mythology that the team’s stories often pull from. Isaac confirmed his interest in a hypothetical Midnight Sons project during a recent interview, in which he listed other members of the team he’d like to interact with as Blade, Ghost Rider, and Daredevil. This all sounds fine and dandy at first glance, but becomes more interesting upon a further look. While Blade and Ghost Rider are both founding members of the group in the comics, Daredevil has never once actually been part of the roster. Also, it’s sort of up-in-the-air if it even makes sense for him to play a role on the team in the first place.
It’s entirely possible that Isaac, a relative newcomer to comics, made a mistake in assuming Matt Murdock would join the line-up. After all, the character often operates in close proximity to many of the team’s famous faces, and has come into conflict with supernatural forces before. A more intriguing option, however, is that Isaac has been briefed on an unannounced Midnight Sons project and accidentally let slip that Daredevil will be involved. A longshot, of course, but not a total reach. Daredevil has become massively popular with fans since his Netflix (now Disney+) series began in 2015, and was just formally introduced to the MCU with a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Marvel Studios will likely want to include him on some sort of team in the future, and something like the Midnight Sons would make a much better fit for the Avocado-at-Law than the highly public, large-scale Avengers.
Daredevil has spent time with the Avengers before, most notably as a member of the early 2010’s New Avengers, but his time with the team never felt permanent or overly characteristic. The Man Without Fear is traditionally a “street level hero”, dealing mostly with local threats that wouldn’t even hit the Avengers radar. For the most part, aside from the occasional team-up with Spider-Man or former flame Black Widow, Murdock operates as a lone vigilante. Marvel Television attempted to reconcile this local hero concept with their desire to pull off a crossover event by making Daredevil a central figure in a new “street hero” iteration of the Defenders. While the limited series flopped with critics and the team dissipated after a single outing, it did do something sort of interesting. It proved that Charlie Cox‘s take on Daredevil, the one we will continue to see in the MCU going forward, is actually pretty darn charming in a group setting.
So, if anyone was wondering if MCU Daredevil can exist on a team, the answer would be yes. As both a constituent and a leader. The next step in over-analyzing Isaac‘s verbal slip is determining if Daredevil can function as a member of the Midnight Sons, specifically. For those who are still confused, the Sons are a group of Marvel heroes and anti-heroes who came together to fend off dark, powerful, supernatural threats that regular heroes are ill-equipped to handle. Typically consisting of characters like Ghost Rider, Blade, Man-Thing, Hellstrom, Werewolf by Night, and even Doctor Strange, the team has done battle with villains like Lilith, Mother of All Demons, Zarathos, and Mephisto. One might consider these baddies out of Daredevil’s paygrade if he hadn’t had a history with his own mystic threats, often coming out of conflicts with The Hand, or if the Midnight Sons hadn’t successfully recruited fellow “regular vigilante” The Punisher in the past.
Ultimately, whether or not Daredevil works as part of the MCU’s Midnight Sons feels like it might depend on what sort of story Marvel would like to tell when the time comes. If they’re going with a massive, world-ending Darkhold tale, then it might be best for them to focus on their heroes with magical powersets and supernatural expertise. However, if they go back to the realm of Defenders-level threats, a la resurrected assassins and shadowy martial arts figures, then Daredevil would be a welcome addition to the crew. The horned do-gooder was once famously part of a collective that was somewhere in-between the Midnight Sons and Defenders, known as the Marvel Knights. This group was made up of existing MCU heroes like Shang-Chi, Spider-Man, Moon Knight, and Blade, and an adaptation could be a good Midnight Sons offshoot further down the road, should Marvel really want to make Daredevil a team player again.
We’ve shared some evidence that might hint at Marvel Studios fast-tracking a new Daredevil project. Now, it seems almost certain as IGN has just shared some information from the latest Production Weekly issue that includes a reference to a project simply titled “Daredevil Reboot.” It is listed as a Disney+ series and includes Marvel’s Behind the Mask producer Chris Gary as a producer alongside Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige. The interesting thing to note is that it’s included as “currently in development” but doesn’t include any more information.
There have been quite a few hints that they are moving forward with the Man Without Fear, especially after the return of Charlie Cox in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While it seems logical now that the character might be on par with big names like Spider-Man, it wasn’t until the Netflix series that catapulted the character even higher to stardom. He was quite popular in the comics but was one of Netflix’s leading series. Some might even argue that it would set the tone for their future projects at the time.
The original series has now found its way to Disney+ alongside others in specific markets. With the title “reboot” included, there’s a chance that it was taken due to the discourse surrounding the project. Production Weekly has a tendency to pull some information based on what is making the rounds, but there’s enough evidence that this project is moving forward and it seems that Marvel Studios has quite a few plans for Daredevil in the future of this franchise.
After a long wait, the now titled Defenders Saga has found its way home to Disney+. The various Netflix series including Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher have gotten added to the Disney-owned streaming service in select countries. Yet, many may have noticed that they’re only restricted to HD/SDR. Well, it turns out that Disney+ will add 4K and UHD versions at a later date, as revealed in a tweet by the Disney+ Help Twitter account on an inquiry.
Hello, Ryan! In an effort to make this highly-anticipated content available to Disney+ subscribers ASAP, we opted to launch in HD/SDR to start, but UHD versions will be available soon. Stay tuned!
They might’ve considered some limitations in providing the amount of content they did. In addition to the Defender Saga, certain markets also got Agents of SHIELD on Disney+ which adds around seven seasons’ worth of content. With such a massive addition to the library, the 4K UHD version may have overloaded the server. It’s safe to assume that they’ll release the updates through batches moving forward, but don’t worry, you’ll get access to them.
It’s still uncertain about their international plans moving forward, as some markets like my own have not received the series just yet. So, there’s still a lack of an official word on when the rest of the world can expect the Netflix projects, as Agents of SHIELD was already available since the streaming service launched. We’ll see if the coming weeks come with updates on their addition.
Disney+ made quite the headlines when they announced that shows like Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and more from the Netflix era are making their way to the streaming service. While these projects have an older demographic, the service will include parental control. Mature content isn’t new to the service, as specific markets include it through the Star branding, but it seems that this move has gotten the attention of the Parents Television Council, who have slammed Disney for their decision. Its President Tim Winter had made the following statement:
For more than 98 years, the Walt Disney Company has been synonymous with the words Family Friendly, and I can think of no other corporation in American history that has been built more squarely on the backs – and on the wallets – of parents and families. The company’s eponymous platform Disney Plus logically marketed itself as a family-friendly streaming service, and parents have placed their trust in Disney to deliver just that
Tim Winter
He goes on to make false comparisons, such as Disney World “adding live striptease performances in Fantasyland” to make its point. Parental control is also mentioned, but they believe that the mere existence of R-rated content violates the trust of families. It’s curious considering that What If…? actively promoted episodes featuring zombies that are also killed throughout the episode.
There is no need for Disney Plus to compete with the explicit content on other streaming platforms. Disney is already at a competitive advantage with a streaming platform that is the safest one out there for families. Its foray into TV-MA-rated fare will forever tarnish its family-friendly crown
While many could argue that the addition of more mature content only benefits their growing market by also offering something for older parts of the family to enjoy the content. Who knows if they might add additional elements into allowing a more family-friendly setup for users of the streaming service, similar to Netflix’s Kids function. We’ll see how or even if Disney reacts to this statement at some point and how they might tackle the concerns.
A likely new Marvel Studios production LLC formed a little less than two weeks ago seems to be a hint of just that. Its title, “Blind Faith Productions LLC”, feels like a perfectly condensed summary of two of Murdoch’s most defining characteristics, both physical and spiritual. But this does not mean that a new Daredevil project will debut any time soon as there’s no way of telling if the LLC is indeed for a Marvel project. As for the character of Matt Murdock, and quoting Charlie Cox himself, “expect to see him everywhere” while we wait for him to lead his own project.
Following the take on the character seen in the Netflix shows, there is still a lot to get to in terms of Daredevil storylines. The biggest selling point might be getting to witness his interactions with so many of the characters that have now become available to explore, from Echo to She-Hulk just to name a couple. But smaller details like having him don his iconic yellow suit may very well come into play. Yellow is obviously not the best color to wear while trying to remain unnoticed in the middle of the night while battling criminals (even if you can make the case for it being a great hoodie color) but bringing into the picture how it is meant as a tribute to his late father, besides a cool new look, it will certainly give us yet another layer for the character to expand and grow out from.
Limited liability companies are created to mitigate risk and keep the accounting for each project separate. More often than not, once the LLCs are established, the next step will be finding writers and eventually directors and/or showrunners, so we can only hope that that news will be coming out in the next few months.
