    Review: ‘FLORA AND ULYSSES’

When Disney Plus launched in November 2019, it did so with surprisingly little original content to offer, relying on the strength of the company’s impressive catalog of films and the hope that fans would subscribe for The Mandalorian and stick around as content caught up. That plan took a big hit when the COVID-19 pandemic halted production on all of Disney’s 2020 projects and complicated the post-production work on those that had been filmed. However, the studio was able to find innovative ways to complete their projects and 2021 looks to be the year that Disney Plus makes its biggest move yet in the streaming wars. With over 90M subscribers already on board, Disney Plus has surpassed its 4-year goal in 14 months just in time to roll out an impressive release slate or original content. This coming weekend, the service will debut its first original feature film of 2021, Flora and Ulysses, an adaptation of the 2014 Newberry Award-winning book of the same name by Kate DiCamillo. Aimed at younger viewers, Flora and Ulysses offers enough laughs to keep parents along for the ride as it effectively conveys the book’s messages of hope, love, friendship and family through the perspective of star Matilda Lawler’s Flora. While it might not have opened to huge numbers in theaters, Flora and Ulysses serves as a reminder that Disney Plus has more to offer subscribers than Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios projects and should do very well on the service.

Directed by Lena Khan,Flora and Ulysses follows self-proclaimed cynic Flora as she navigates through the world amid the separation of her parents, played by Alyson Hannigan and Ben Schwartz. Both Flora’s parents are artists struggling with their work (mom is a romance novelist and dad is comic book creator) and in their struggles have gone their separate ways, leaving Flora feeling rather hopeless and alone. A fateful and relatively ridiculous accident caused by an out-of-control vacuum and an unfortunate squirrel set the course for the main plot of the film. After resuscitating the squirrel, Flora soon comes to find out that her newfound pal isn’t your garden variety squirrel: somehow the accident imbued Ulysses (named for the vacuum that took him out) with superpowers…and the gift of poetry. As Ulysses and Flora discover exactly what the super squirrel is capable of, his presence threatens to widen the rift between her parents and, once he accidentally outs himself to the world, invites an even greater threat into Flora’s life: animal control!

While you might initially find the idea of a super-powered squirrel to be an entirely absurd premise, the film honestly underutilizes it, sometimes relying on Flora to remind Ulysses to “flare up like a flame” in order to unleash his awesome powers. Though Lawler brings Flora to life wonderfully, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth’s William Spiver steals most of the scenes on the human side of things. If there’s a true weakness to the film, it’s honestly the overdependence on the adults. Schwartz and Hannigan often overdo it, but if anything it highlights the importance of Flora. While the adults certainly serve their purpose (I always wondered what kind of parents let Dora and Diego on adventures with wild animals), 90 minutes of Flora, William and Ulysses might just be perfect recipe.

While the film’s reminder of Flora’s motto, “Do not hope: instead, observe”, from what appears to be her life’s handbook, Terrible Things Can Happen To You, seems a little heavy-handed at times, it’s so integral to the core of her character and her journey that its repetition is understandable. As the story develops, Flora finds it more and more difficult to keep hope buried at the expense of her cynicism and the true heart of the film is learning that there’s room for a healthy balance between the two. Of course, as is always the case with superheroes, it isn’t Ulysses superstrength or ability to fly that makes the biggest impact on the story: it’s his ability to teach a family that’s lost its way that it’s ok to hope and that it’s never too late to turn back to the ones you love.

Flora and Ulysses streams this Friday, February 19th, on Disney Plus.

  • UPDATE: Disney Will Not Recast Gina Carano’s Cara Dune

UPDATE: Disney Will Not Recast Gina Carano’s Cara Dune

UPDATE: The moment we dropped the news, it seems that THR has updated their article and states that they won’t be recasting Cara Dune moving forward.

    Source: THR, DiscussingFilm

It was only a week ago that Disney fire The Mandalorian star Gina Carano from her role in the galaxy far, far away. It came after months of scrutiny from fans. Carano has been divisive due to her questionable social media posts. The final straw for Disney was an Instagram post that many viewed as anti-semitic, but the former MMA fighter maintains it was a call for unity. Whatever the case may be, the future of Cara Dune is in doubt. According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Carano was to headline a Disney+ spin-off series. As such, their insiders claim they are considering a recast of Cara Dune for a story and merchandising reasons.

Initially, it seemed as though we’d seen the last of Dune. After a recurring role over two seasons led her character to the ranks of New Republic officer, it did not appear that any future appearances were vital to the series’ plot. However, the news that Disney is considering a recast would indicate that they have big plans, which may correlate with the recently announced Mandalorian spin-off Rangers of the New Republic. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Carano was supposed to be part of the Disney Investor’s Day roll-out that revealed the show to the public. However, the backlash over previous Twitter comments led to her getting booted from the event. If Carano was to play a role as Dune in any of the projects announced that day, New Republic would have been the one that made the most sense.

Hasbro has halted the production of Cara Dune-based toys. Even Amazon has removed almost all of its merchandise for the character. A recast would most likely allow the companies to salvage some of the potential losses from any toys they’re currently unable to sell with a new face and re-branding. There are no details given if Carano also gains a licensing fee for their use of her image through the toys, so there might be some legal discussions are happening behind the scenes. It will be interesting to see how it develops as Star Wars rolls out their future Disney+ slate.

  • Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy Still in Development

Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy Still in Development

Star Wars has entered a new era. After the new trilogy has ended, the franchise tested new forms of storytelling with its first Disney+ series, The Mandalorian. Its success led to the announcement of a slew of various titles that will premiere on the streaming service. Among them, we got the reveal of a live-action Ahsoka Tano show. They also revealed two brand new films, an unnamed project by Taika Waititi and Rogue Squadron by Patty Jenkins. However, there was one absent film announcement. The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was originally going to work on a spin-off trilogy, yet we haven’t heard anything about it in a long time. Many believed it could have been canceled as Johnson moved on to working on the Knives Out franchise. Plus, Disney seems to have a stronger focus on its streaming service moving forward. USA Today’s Sariah Wilson took to Twitter to confirm that he is still actually working on it.

    https://twitter.com/sariahwilson/status/1361502613728948230

It seems that he is getting the time he needs to iron out the details. We never got any insight into what his trilogy would explore. The Star Wars franchise has many histories to draw from, may it be the Old Republic or explore the galaxy after Rey defeated Palpatine. There have been some discussions on his take on the iconic franchise. Either way, if he has full freedom to tackle his take on an overarching storyline in a galaxy far far away, he could offer a unique story that we haven’t seen yet in this galaxy. I would love to see more of the daily life of Stormtroopers. The Mandalorian offered us a look at the potential of exploring stories beyond the Jedi that we’ve come to know and love.

  • Marvel Studios to Launch BTS Series ‘ASSEMBLED’ March 12th

Marvel Studios to Launch BTS Series ‘ASSEMBLED’ March 12th

Marvel Studios will launch a new documentary behind-the-scenes show, Assembled, on March 12th, launching with an episode about the production of WandaVision. News of the BTS episode for WandaVision was first reported by Murphy’s Multiverse in November.

Lucasfilm’s Gallery, a BTS documentary for The Mandalorian, proved that the audience was hungry for this type of program and Marvel Studios is smart to follow suit. Based on the tweet, it seems that we can expect one episode of Assembled to air for each upcoming Marvel Studios project, both films and TV series, in the near future. Fans will certainly have a lot to look forward to in the first episode of the series which is sure to go into depth about how Marvel Studios pulled out all the stops to make the experience of filming WandaVision as authentic as possible to the time periods they were playing in.

Assembled: The Making of WandaVision is set to stream on Disney Plus on March 12th.

  • Limited Edition ‘WandaVision’ Billy and Tommy Funko Pop! Revealed

Limited Edition ‘WandaVision’ Billy and Tommy Funko Pop! Revealed

Earlier today, we got the first reveal of WandaVision‘s new “Pietro Maximoff” Funko Pop. It was great to finally see the real deal after many fake leaks made us wonder if Quicksilver would show up in the Disney+ show. At first, it was strange that we didn’t see any Funkos for the twins, who have a prominent role in the show. Well, it looks like the reveal was going to follow shortly after, as our first look at their figurines has been revealed. Just like Evan Peter‘s Funko, we get them both in their Halloween costumes from the latest episode.

It looks like it will be a limited edition so you’ll only have to be fast to get your hands on them. Billy has a Halloween-inspired version of his original costume while his brother has a copy of Pietro’s. It doesn’t look like we get Tommy’s running ability showcased like with his uncle, but Billy does have the blue glow in his hand that was only briefly teased in the latest episode. It’ll be interesting if they will age up again as the show continues with the next three episodes. If so, we might get some more Funkos from them, which could explain why these are limited edition. If anyone wants to get the Maximoff-Vision family together, these will certainly be a must purchase for fans of the show.

  • ‘WandaVision’: An Error in Reality

    ‘WandaVision’: An Error in Reality

As WandaVision has proven time and time again, sometimes, things are not always as they seem. Even outside of Westview. Over the course of Marvel Studios’ hit show, we’ve seen a number of things that seem to be out of place here and there. An American sitcom through the ages starring two Avengers. Two characters that somehow have been revived, one of them bring in the wrong face from possibly another universe. People with suppressed personalities and Wanda inside everyone’s head. As Vision would say, it seems that something is clearly very wrong inside of Westview. But that doesn’t exclude the outside world as well. Recently a small mistake was pointed out to our fellow contributor Lizzie Hill by Twitter user @Cameron16549707.

The image and tweet refer to Episode 5 of WandaVision; “On A Very Special Episode…”. The detail mentioned by this fan truly is interesting. When we go to analyze the scene, as we can observe below, for just a split second, we can see Dottie’s name on the S.W.O.R.D. document in the Alias section.

In the next shot, when Monica pulls back out, we can see the information written on it and we can notice very blurrily Dottie’s name and the checkmark for the Sex on “Female”, which corroborates that the sheet does indeed belong to Dottie (or at least, it’s what was intended). What makes this all the odder is that the image of the person on Dottie’s sheet is Dennis the Mailman, not Dottie per see.

    Why this is important

The devil is always in the details and that certainly includes Marvel Studios. Now, let me just shoot down those Dennis is secretly Dottie theories because I don’t think that’s what’s happening here. This certainly seems to be a case of Marvel Studios making a small mistake, hoping fans might not notice, and it’s almost certainly what was going to happen. It’s been nearly a week since Episode 5 aired on Disney+ and no one seemed to notice until very recently but it makes it all the more interesting.

If anything, it convinces me even more that Dottie may have a much larger role to play in this show than we previously thought. If we analyze Dottie’s sheet for a second, she doesn’t have a legal name, similar to how Agnes doesn’t have one either, and the fact that Marvel Studios went out of their way to CGI Dennis’ image and ID onto the sheet so fans wouldn’t notice makes Dottie’s role in WandaVision all the more mysterious and intriguing. I had previously hypothesized that Dottie may have actually been the sorceress known as Arcanna Jones, given that her husband in the show was known as Phil Jones, a character that already has some history in the comics. But given that Phil Jones was just his alias and that he’s actually Harold Proctor, that theory may have been washed away. Nonetheless, I still believe that Dottie may still serve this series as a sort of antagonist to Wanda who has yet to reveal herself. Who she might be whoever, remains to be seen.

  • ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ To Premiere With First New Original Disney Animation Short Since 2016

‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ To Premiere With First New Original Disney Animation Short Since 2016

We are only a few weeks away from Disney’s first big film premiere of 2021. Raya and the Last Dragon will release simultaneously on Disney+’s Premier Access and in theaters. It will be their major test if this hybrid model will determine their future release plans. They went all out advertising it during the Super Bowl with a brand new trailer. Now, it looks like they have one more little incentive for people to check it out in theaters. Disney has just revealed a brand new theatrical short titled Us Again. It is the first one in over five years by the famous studio. It will premiere alongside Raya and the Last Dragon in theaters worldwide as of March 3th. It will premiere on Disney+ in June. Check out the first official image of the upcoming short here:

The upcoming short is about an elderly couple. One magical night, they rekindle their forgotten passion on a magical night. It will not feature any dialogue, as the couple’s love for dance will transport them back through time. Executive producer and Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer Jennifer Lee shared her excitement for the new short and teased a future for more animated shorts:

One of my priorities has been to bring back theatrical animated shorts and to give artists at our Studio an opportunity to explore new ideas.  ‘Us Again’ has so much spirit and energy, and pushes the boundaries of our short form storytelling

The upcoming short was directed by Zach Parrish, who is the first to attempt one since 2016’s Inner Workings. Parrish is n stranger to Disney’s work, as he was the director of the Short Circuit film Puddles and served as the head of the animation on Big Hero 6. The short will combine dance, music, emotional storytelling, and animation with the help of Award-winning choreographers and dancers Keone and Mari, who worked with Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish. Their performance is given new life through the help of composer Pinar Toprak. Brad Simonsen, who has worked as associate producer on Big Hero 6, Zootopia, and Ralph Breaks the Internet, is set as a producer. The first visual already promises a heartfelt story of how dance and music connect us through the ages.

  • How WandaVision’s Halloween Episode Explains Anachronistic Imagery in Westview

How WandaVision’s Halloween Episode Explains Anachronistic Imagery in Westview

WandaVision has been pretty good about keeping the sitcom elements of each episode true to the era they take place in. As I noted in my first piece analyzing the changing eras of Westview, the only thing that’s truly bothered me about it so far is the 1950’s episode being modeled largely after The Dick Van Dyke Show, which didn’t premiere until 1961. I bring this up because I’ve seen a decent amount of criticism and confusion surrounding the era Westview is supposed to be set in during Episode 6, and the answer to all of this explains the timeline not only for this episode but the one I myself complained about a few weeks back.

    Explaining the Eras
By starting in the 1950s, WandaVision had seven decades to cover to reach the “present-day” given that the late 2010s and early 2020s in the MCU are kind of fuzzy due to the Blip, and people like Wanda who were snapped away haven’t experienced anything beyond 2018. But with only six era-themed episodes, it wasn’t exactly clear how they’d handle that matter. There was a lot of speculation that the 2000s and 2010s would be covered together in the same episode, or that we’d only see the Westview characters in the present-day once the sitcom bubble burst.
The answer to this little conundrum turned out to be neither of these scenarios, as we found out during this week’s “All-New Halloween Spooktacular!”. The episode had elements of both the late 1990s and early 2000s, and the final sitcom era (which will presumably be covered in next week’s episode) looks to be focused on the late 2000s and 2010s. This sectioning off of time periods explains the things that some viewers have pointed out as anachronistic, like the cinema showing 2004’s The Incredibles and what is most likely the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap starring Lindsay Lohan.

Why A Little Bit of Anachronism Works
Admittedly, this episode does lean more into the early 2000s than the late 1990s as evidenced by things like the Malcolm and the Middle theme song homage, characters – particularly kids – breaking the fourth wall, cheesy sound effects that accompany certain movements, and even the claymation-style “Yo Magic” commercial are all hallmarks of this time period much more than the ’90s. But some things could be seen as fitting with both “sides” of this era, like the Dance Dance Revolution-style game the twins played that first debuted in 1998 but became even more popular in the 2000s. And we did get one shot of what was most likely the actual 90’s in the form of the Halloween flashback of Wanda and Pietro as kids (assuming it was a real flashback).
Ultimately, Westview seems to operate under similar rules to ABC sitcom The Goldbergs. That show is set in the 1980s but doesn’t make an effort to introduce technology and pop culture touchstones in the order they debuted in real life. Every episode is introduced as taking place in “1980-something” and anything that was around in the ’80s is fair game to show up at any time, and WandaVision is doing the same with each era it covers.

  • ‘WandaVision’ Takes the Top Viewing Spot Worldwide

‘WandaVision’ Takes the Top Viewing Spot Worldwide

Disney+ has seen astounding growth throughout its first year. It already surpassed 90 million viewers, which was originally meant to be the streaming service’s four-year prediction. It is impressive if you consider that the only real high IP that was provided for the service was The Mandalorian‘s two seasons. Last month’s release of WandaVision did make people wonder if the first Marvel Studios’ original series would continue the service’s growth. Well, according to Parrot Analytics, the series has become the number one series worldwide.

The interesting aspect is that the show didn’t start as the most popular show. It seems the initial three episodes kept it between the seventh and the 35th spot. Once the third episode hit, it skyrocketed up to the third or second spot. Ever since the major twist at the end of the fifth episode, it has officially taken the number one spot and hasn’t left it since the episode aired. It shows the relevance of the weekly release model. Wade Payson-Denney, an analyst of Parrot Analytics, points out the difference between Disney+ and Netflix’s binge strategy:

They really pop up at first but quickly trail off. It’s a quick hit for these streamers. Whereas with weekly release, we see popularity gradually build over time, especially for a show like The Mandalorian and WandaVision

The Mandalorian actually didn’t peak until its season finale, as it just saw a continuous growth since its initial episodes. WandaVision still has three more weeks to go, so it is sure to stick to that top spot before Falcon and the Winter Soldier takes over in March. Netflix’s focus on releasing their shows in one burst means they have an early peak but fizzle out fast. It’ll be interesting to make a comparison between the Marvel shows. The next two shows will have shorter runtimes of six episodes, which may go through a faster viewer cycle. As Payson-Denney points out, these shows remain in the conversation longer and are able to grow their audience as a result of everyone sharing their viewing experiences and theories online. It’ll be interesting to see how far WandaVision goes in the coming weeks.

  • ‘WANDAVISION’ is Hexpanding

    ‘WANDAVISION’ is Hexpanding

WandaVision keeps growing in scope with each passing episode. It’s Hexpanding, in a way. Episode 1, where we spent (practically) its entire runtime in “Sitcom Mode”, seems so far away as the show enters its third act firing on all cylinders. It took a while to get to the point where the state of affairs within the show became clear but with Episode 6 ending the way it did, we’ll have an entirely new status quo to look forward to next week. Big changes might be around the corner, changes that can help propel the show to new heights.

The Westview Anomaly grew in size and the S.W.O.R.D. team stationed outside not only wasn’t enough to contain it, but it also managed to get itself trapped within its newfound limits. Wanda was underestimated and the outside world will have to find some new weapons to counteract her Hex. Random armed soldiers won’t do the trick anymore and, being likely that several other New Jersey residents have been engulfed by the anomaly, the event is sure to have been noticed by at least a few of the remaining Avengers, with a special focus on those who are more in touch with such…magical things.

But not all new players might come from the outside. Inside the Hex there are new powers brewing. The twins have finally displayed (some of) their abilities and, keeping in mind how Wanda seems unable to control them at will, they certainly emerge as new players that inevitably might stand either in Wanda’s way or beside her, as she looks to maintain her (each passing day a bit less) fairytale life with Vision. Tommy and Billy, even at such a young age, would surely give whatever S.W.O.R.D. throws at them a run for its money.

Also inside the Hex, we will now find several characters that are now down the rabbit hole. Much like Monica, they might experience light moments of clarity, breaking Wanda’s grasp on them. But this time, especially in Darcy’s case, with an increased amount of knowledge about what is occurring, how it might be happening, and how it might be hindered if not terminated. Darcy has a Ph.D. in Astrophysics, and with the world inside the Hex moving into the 2000s she can probably find the tools that may allow her to fight Wanda’s powers from the inside.

Another new player might show up in the form of Monica’s Aerospace Engineer friend. We’ve already developed a theory on who that might be, but even if that doesn’t pan out, the build-up towards her arrival has been significant to the point that it most likely won’t be just a random character, but instead someone that matters in what the overall story is concerned.

A single episode has now managed to present us with an entirely new playing field. With new players coming into the game from all sides, old players finding themselves in new situations, players switching sides altogether, the power struggle has just begun, and it will be even more fierce than initially expected.
