  • PlayStation 5 Not Backward Compatible With PSX, PS2 or PS3

There has been much debate on how much backward compatibility will be possible for PlayStation 5. Microsoft proudly proclaimed that their next entry Xbox Series X would be able to play games as far back as the original’s 2001 Xbox library. So, it seemed like a perfect opportunity for its biggest competitor to follow suit. The thought of playing my original Final Fantasy VII or PS2’s Persona 4 on the same console sounded like a promising prospect. Sadly, it looks like that won’t be the case after all.

Someone asked a question over on Ubisoft’s Support page about upgrading from a PlayStation 4 to the next-gen console. In it, they may have accidentally confirmed that it will only support titles from the previous generation. This means any games from the original PlayStation up until PlayStation 3 will not be playable on the latest entry. We still have to keep in mind this isn’t a confirmation by Sony, so they may have some long-term plans potentially that production companies aren’t informed by yet.

This is a bit disappointing. Of course, the next-gen console is there to play the latest games. Still, it’s just a waste to not embrace the history that came before. After five generations of consoles, it’s the perfect time to pay tribute to the ones that started it all. Also, each new generation makes it difficult to keep older consoles around due to a lack of space or plug-ins on the TV. This would’ve been the perfect opportunity to remedy this issue and celebrate the past. Here’s hoping that at least the next-gen console will include the return of some classic franchises with new entries. I am still not losing hope on the return of Sly Cooper for the next generation.

  • Ubisoft’s ‘Gods & Monsters’ May Be Retitled

Ubisoft’s ‘Gods & Monsters’ May Be Retitled

Last year, we got the announcement that Ubisoft was working on a game titled Gods & Monsters. At the time, it was said to be a storybook adventure of the hero Fenyx trying to save the Greek gods. It would be from the team that brought us Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, so this is their second time exploring Greek culture and mythology. They did reveal some screenshots and tidbits since but nothing substantial. Well, looks like an upcoming announcement may have gotten leaked ahead of time.

The Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee has rated a game titled Immortals: Fenyx Rising. At first, there is no game that would match this description. That is until you realize that the character from Gods & Monsters was confirmed to be named Fenyx. So, there is a good chance the game will be retitled as such. Why would they go with this title change? Well, Immortals makes for a good franchise name. They might plan to expand it with other entries that aren’t tied purely to Greek mythology.

This confirmation comes from Taiwan, so there is also a chance that the localization team may have set their own naming. Still, the timing also seems to fit regarding Ubisoft’s upcoming event in September. Ubisoft Forward is their new format to reveal future lineups of games, so there is a good chance we get the title change confirmation by then. Hopefully, this will also be accompanied by some more footage of what seems like a The Legend of Zelda inspired game.

  • Gamescom: ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Reassemble in CG Trailer

Gamescom: ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Reassemble in CG Trailer

Next week, Marvel’s Avengers will finally be released. It has been quite the ride since its initial announcement back in 2017. Looking back, it didn’t say much but we did get the first tease of the game’s story about reassembling the team. Now, three years later we got a reveal trailer, two war tables with one on the horizon and three weekends of testing out the Beta. Now, it’s only a few more days before we can play as our favorite Avengers. To celebrate the launch, Crystal Dynamics will even hold an additional War Table to reveal our first look at what post-launch content we can expect. It doesn’t even stop there, as now during Gamescom weekend, they also released a short CGI trailer to promote the game one last time.

Almost wished they showed this trailer a while back. We get a great heroic shot with the team before Ms. Marvel interrupts Cap’s speech. Everyone’s quirks are highlighted with a brief addition of showcasing a few players experiencing the game. Eagle-eyed viewers might even notice that one girl is wearing a She-Hulk shirt, who is one of the leaked DLC characters for the game.

It all comes to a confrontation with M.O.D.O.K. before it ends. This is the first time we get to see him in action since they revealed his true form. This trailer teases a lot of action and I almost hope that each new story expansion gets a brief trailer like this teasing the main antagonist. Only drawback, it makes me even more impatient to get my hands on the game.

  • Data Leaks Reveal Spider-Man & Black Panther Coming to ‘Fortnite’

Data Leaks Reveal Spider-Man & Black Panther Coming to ‘Fortnite’

Once again we are diving into the world of data leaks. To add some variety, we are going to explore a different game. Today’s focus will be one of Twitch’s most popular games, Fortnite. Yes, even Epic’s game isn’t safe from data miners. They just entered their fourth chapter that was titled Nexus War. It is a massive crossover with Marvel that features characters like Thor, Iron Man, Galactus, and many more. The iconic Battle Royale map has also been completely overhauled for the event. Looks like there is still more to come, as a few data miners have uncovered achievements that hint at the addition of Spider-Man at some point.

It all started when it was uncovered that a variety of costumes are included in the game from Marvel that has yet to be confirmed. Not too long ago, it was leaked that a potential Silver Surfer outfit would be added at some point. Most of the design already seemed ready to launch.

These were confirmed by data miners ShiinaBR and HYPEX, who then also shared the visuals of the in-game bundle in action. These users have been actively sharing details on the massive crossover event. It doesn’t end there, as they also found unique sounds that would also confirm the appearance of a Black Panther skin.

Now, let’s get to the big reveal with the least evidence so far. The inclusion of Silver Surfer and Black Panther does confirm some credibility to what they found within the game’s data. In addition to these reveals, there was a curious inclusion of achievements for Spider-Man. Most notably, one that includes his iconic logo. There is also data that suggests that Carnage is also a potential skin within the game’s code.

Unlike Silver Surfer, we have no idea what designs these characters will have. Still, Fortnite art design is great in translating these characters into 3D models. Iron Man, She-Hulk, and Doom look great in-game already. So, these additions are going to fit right in. This season has been a massive event with countless new characters being added to the game. It will be interesting to see just how big this will end by the time Marvel and Epic have revealed all their plans.

  • ‘Resident Evil’ Netflix Series to Explore Wesker Legacy

‘Resident Evil’ Netflix Series to Explore Wesker Legacy

Netflix, in the midst of a run of dominance in the Streaming Wars, has not been afraid to dabble in original content that has been tried and failed at before. Their team has been quite successful with their adaptation of Castlevania, and this success even led to the announcement of a series based on Devil May Cry. Now, it looks like they are eyeing one more gaming franchise to adapt, as they have confirmed that a Resident Evil series is currently in development. Not only do we have that, but we also got a tease of what we can expect from the adaptation that will explore two separate timelines. Supernatural‘s Andrew Dabb and The Walking Deads’ Bronwen Hughes are attached as showrunners. It will consist of eight episodes with an hour runtime. We got the following description for the show:

In the first timeline, fourteen-year-old sisters Jade and Billie Wesker are moved to New Raccoon City. A manufactured, corporate town, forced on them right as adolescence is in full swing. But the more time they spend there, the more they come to realize that the town is more than it seems and their father may be concealing dark secrets. Secrets that could destroy the world. Cut to the second timeline, well over a decade into the future: there are less than fifteen million people left on Earth. And more than six billion monsters — people and animals infected with the T-virus. Jade, now thirty, struggles to survive in this New World, while the secrets from her past – about her sister, her father, and herself – continue to haunt her.

    RE

Off the bat, it is an odd choice to explore the current day with a brand new Raccoon City and what sounds like the post-apocalypse, but the franchise has been interpreted in many different ways across many different gaming generations. After Resident Evil 4, the games started to embrace a more action-oriented approach, but the seventh entry flipped the script by returning to its roots while adding a first-person perspective. Capcom has even started remaking the classic games, with some exceptional twists, that focus more on the Zombie horror and jump scares that made us fall in love with the franchise so many years ago.

This series, at least initially, sounds like it will take a lot from the Resident Evil games AND films. Paul W. S. Anderson reinterpreted the franchise and only loosely based it on the games with only the zombie designs and names of characters carrying over. The confirmation that the series will star a pair of Wesker twins named Wesker already alludes to the iconic villain from the games. However, he also had a recurring role in the film franchise when he first appeared in Resident Evil: Extinction. Constantin Film, who produced the films, is also returning for this project. They do confirm this will be a brand new story but it wouldn’t be surprising to see even more elements from the films carried over. Whatever it may end up being, it will certainly be a wild ride.

Gamescom: ‘Twelve Minute’ to Star Willem Dafoe, James McAvoy & Daisy Ridley

It’s always the small surprises that really grab your attention. Last year’s E3, we got a look at a game that will feature a man trapped in a time loop. It was a small indie game that looked quite intriguing as you have to find a way to break the loop. We get teases of a couple, as their life gets more and more twisted with each repeat. This year’s Gamescom gave us a major reveal for what seemed like just a small indie title. Daisy Ridley and James McAvoy will voice the titular characters. Not only that but none other than Willem Dafoe is the narrator of the story. It is uncertain if he will also constantly narrate each loop but it is an exciting prospect. This casting might have put this once small game on everyone’s radar. Check it out right here:
