Oscar Isaac on the Challenges of ‘Moon Knight’

Marvel Studios Moon Knight has captured the attention and imagination of fans, many of whom aren’t entirely familiar with the character’s struggles with dissociative identity disorder. The character, first introduced in 1975, has evolved over the years into one or Marvel Comics most complex heroes and, according to star Oscar Isaac, who will bring the character to life in the upcoming streaming series, it was that taking on the challenge of that complexity that attracted him to the role.

What I love most about this thing is that it’s an exploration of a mind that doesn’t know itself. A human being that doesn’t know his own brain. I found that really moving: what the mind is capable of as far as survival. But the workload was massive: the technical challenge of embodying these different characters, physically, the way I manifest my body… It required a lot of energy.

So far, through a trailer and the Super Bowl TV spot, we’ve seen Isacc inhabit the role of Steven Grant most of the time, with only a quick mention of the character’s original identity, Marc Spector. The series, however, promises to see “Grant” unravel the mystery of his true identity in what Isaac called “the first legitimate Marvel character-study since Iron Man“, and the many twists and turns that it’ll take along the way are sure to keep fans engaged from week to week. While the character has existed for more than 40 years in the comics, it seems as though Marvel Studios has created a rather original take on the character, meaning that even long-time comic readers may find themselves guessing, which seems to be exactly what Isaac hoped for because, as he said himself, he saw it as a chance to do “something really fucking nutty on a major stage” and there is no stage more major than the MCU at the moment.

  • New ‘Moon Knight’ Screenshot Further Hints at Disney+ Series’ Villain

New ‘Moon Knight’ Screenshot Further Hints at Disney+ Series’ Villain

Moon Knight‘s trailers have mainly focused on our protagonist and his shattered mind, but the biggest question still remained on who Ethan Hawke was playing. The first teaser trailer hinted at him having a role similar to a cult leader, but it’s unclear how he may connect to the overarching narrative and Egyptian mythology present in Moon Knight’s. Well, a new set of photos as the Super Bowl spot has finally dropped may have given a much clearer connection in the form of his staff.

In one of the images, you can clearly see Hawke’s character holding a staff with two alligator heads on it. Now, for Egyptian mythology, this is quite the big reveal and now the first time we’ve seen the visual. The first teaser included a crocodile on Marc Spector’s phone. Sobek is commonly connected with a crocodile head but there’s also Ammit, better known as Ammut. The latter is probably the likeliest candidate, as the Devourer of the Dead had a big role in Moon Knight‘s comic storylines.

    Image

In the comic, Ammut took over the body of Doctor Emmet, one of the characters Hawke was theorized to be playing. Yet, the captions from the initial trailer seemingly confirmed him to be playing Arthur Harrow. So, they may be combining multiple characters in this case. We also have the humanoid jackals that were featured in the comics from the initial trailer, which adds to the theory that the character may turn out to be the actual villain in the story that’s been using Hawke‘s character as a vessel to do their bidding. It’s uncertain though if she is working alongside Khonshu or against, which could make for an interesting turmoil for our unlikely hero to face.

  • Disney+ Adds New ‘Moon Knight’ Visual to Disney+ Alongside TV-14 Rating

Disney+ Adds New ‘Moon Knight’ Visual to Disney+ Alongside TV-14 Rating

Just recently, we’ve heard from Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige that Moon Knight will be quite a bit different from what came before on Disney+. The family-friendly platform may mature with this new project, as it was promised to be “brutal” and a game-changer fo the tonal shift the MCU has been holding up to this day. In a way, it could be close to what the Netflix shows offered, which coincidentally are also leaving the platform. Yet, it seems that the series got the same rating as the other Disney+ series with people noticing a TV-14 rating on Disney+ alongside a great-looking new visual of Moon Knight’s crescent moon.

As the Direct points out, this rating has been shared by every other MCU series on the platform, but that doesn’t mean it might still embrace darker elements. Curious enough, while European shows usually share the same rating, the series is currently still at an age restriction of 12 in the German/Austrian account.

It’ll likely get updated later on, but the description with “Mild-mannered Steven Grant has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with a mercenary” is a really curious addition. In a way, it’s trying to make us think that Grant is the dominant personality and not Marc Spector, like in the comics. So, perhaps the take on the character might be quite a bit different, especially with Mr. Knight appearing in the character’s premier series. There’s still a good chance we get a new teaser in today’s Super Bowl and the success of this series might push Disney+ to overall accept more adult content moving forward, which is still holding it back.

  • Kevin Feige Promises ‘Moon Knight’ Will Be a “Tonal Shift” for the MCU

Kevin Feige Promises ‘Moon Knight’ Will Be a “Tonal Shift” for the MCU

There have been many questions on what we can expect from the next live-action Marvel show starring Moon Knight. The franchise is seemingly exploring new corners of its universe, but it seemed unclear if the family-friendly content so far might truly reach the likes that Daredevil or Jessica Jones offered. Well, it seems that March upcoming release of Moon Knight may accomplish exactly that, as, alongside the reveal of an amazing looking Mr. Knight, Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige promises that the upcoming Disney+ series

It’s been fun to work with Disney+ and see the boundaries shifting on what we’re able to do. There are moments [in the series] when Moon Knight is wailing on another character, and it is loud and brutal, and the knee-jerk reaction is, ‘We’re gonna pull back on this, right?’ No. We’re not pulling back. There’s a tonal shift. This is a different thing. This is Moon Knight

    Kevin Feige

Most of the promotion has teased that Oscar Isaac’s take on the comic character won’t shy away from getting his fits bloody, especially as you can clearly see it on his “moonarangs” and fists. Feige even highlights that “he’s brutal” and we can expect a lot from the project.

Even in the comics, he was more on the darker side of the franchise. So, we might see a completely unhinged Fist of Khonshu which also promises that future entries in the franchise may not shy away from darker storylines and offer visceral action, even if they are on a more family-oriented streaming service like Disney+.

  • Bob Chapek Hints That ‘She-Hulk’ Won’t Release Until After ‘Ms. Marvel’

Bob Chapek Hints That ‘She-Hulk’ Won’t Release Until After ‘Ms. Marvel’

There have been some interesting small mentions from Disney’s Earnings Call that give us a clearer hint on what we can expect from Marvel Studios’ planned 2022 Disney+ release schedule. Not only did we uncover when exactly we can expect their next cinematic release to hit the streaming service, but we also got a hint at when we can expect the other series. So far, Moon Knight’s March 30th release is the only one confirmed, but it looks like we have a clearer picture of the future.

At one point during the call, he revealed that She-Hulk won’t release until after Ms. Marvel hit the streaming service. It further confirms the Marvel Japan schedule that leaked back in late January where we also saw She-Hulk as the last Disney+ release for the year. There was no mention of the animated project I Am Groot, but it seems very likely that this was the intended schedule, especially as it follows 2021’s schedule.

Marvel Studios may be focusing on releasing three live-action shows a year with an animated shortly after the summer. So, we might expect I Am Groot around the same release window that What If…? had. Of course, it won’t be the exact same structure especially as She-Hulk isn’t a holiday-themed project. So, it may release in the early Fall rather than closer to the Holidays. Plus, there’s still the question if we might expect The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special this year, which makes sense given the release of the third film in 2023. Still, it’s great to have a clearer picture of what to expect moving forward.

  • Disney Latino Hints at a New ‘Moon Knight’ Ability in the Disney+ Series

Disney Latino Hints at a New ‘Moon Knight’ Ability in the Disney+ Series

Disney Latino released a page discussing Moon Knight’s origin and abilities in the upcoming Disney+ series. It included a reference to his abilities that change depending on the moon cycle but included a reference to something that might be new to even comic readers. In the article, there’s a reference to the Fist of Khonshu having the ability to have “prophetic visions about future events.”

It’s certainly a curious addition, but there’s a chance that the “visions” are tied directly to his multiple personality disorder. Perhaps the show will use this concept to play with us and Steven, who is unsure about who he truly is. The first trailer teased that his reality is falling apart, especially as he uncovers his actual background as the mercenary Marc Spector.

If he has the ability to see the future, it makes you wonder if they tease his main antagonist and end of the series throughout its runtime. We could even get a post-credit sequence of a vision that hints at where we’ll see Oscar Isaac again after his time on the Disney+ series.

  • Oscar Isaac Confirms ‘Moon Knight’ as a Limited Series

Oscar Isaac Confirms ‘Moon Knight’ as a Limited Series

As Marvel Studios isn’t following the usual TV format, you never know which of their new series may end up getting a sequel season or not. So far, the only confirmed series to get a second season are Loki and What If…? but everything else is pure speculation. It looks like their latest Disney+ series, Moon Knight, might just be a one-and-done, as during Variety’s Actor on Actor

I’d never heard of “Moon Knight” before, and I collected comics when I was younger. I’d heard of “Morbius,” but I’d never heard of “Moon Knight.” I don’t know how the process was for you because it’s a feature film, we’re a limited series. There was a lot of room to try stuff because there wasn’t the pressure that we got to make sure we make however many hundreds of millions of dollars on the opening weekend.

    Oscar Isaac

It makes sense that they might approach Moon Knight as a limited series, especially with how the initial trailer teases it like an analysis of Marc Spector’s psyche. So, a potential Season 2 might fall too much into a typical action storyline that the actor might not be interested in tackling. Of course, we don’t know if his fractured mind would truly come back together by the end of the story.

Marvel Studios also has the freedom to potentially renew it at a later point, as they don’t have to make a direct second season shortly after but explore the character once they figure out a new take on the character. It’s also uncertain how active Oscar Isaac wants to be in an interconnected franchise, but it seems likely he’ll re-appear after the mini-series premieres on Disney+ on March 30th.

  • Latest ‘Moon Knight’ Promo Art Offers Full Look at Oscar Isaac’s Costume

Latest ‘Moon Knight’ Promo Art Offers Full Look at Oscar Isaac’s Costume

There’s been a lot of hype surrounding the upcoming release of Moon Knight, which may become Disney+’s darkest story yet. Marvel Studios is venturing into new territory and the first trailer certainly sold us on the potential of this new franchise. Plus, the character may have one of their best costume designs yet, which we got a closer look at through a promo image around a week ago. Luckily, it seems a new piece has found its way online with a full look at his entire costume, as shared by @MKnightNews.

The design is still quite impressive, as they utilized a mummy-inspired design with how his costume is made of white bandages. It fits into the Egyptian theme the character has and that was highlighted in the trailer. Plus, it adds some nice detailing to a pure white design, which may have otherwise been quite difficult to adapt in live-action. The moon symbol being golden also adds a nice detailing.

The interesting surprise is how the cape is drawn. Instead of being a full piece of cloth, it’s also made of stitched together wraps, which may add to the fact that the costume isn’t a physical thing he wears but something that magically wraps around him, as seen in the trailers. Of course, it would be an interesting twist if he’s actually wearing his Mr. Knight costume and just imagines the full costume due to his fractured personality disorder.

  • ‘Moon Knight’s Ethan Hawke Teases His “Terrifying” Villain

‘Moon Knight’s Ethan Hawke Teases His “Terrifying” Villain

Many were surprised when Ethan Hawke revealed he was joining the upcoming Marvel Studios’ series, Moon Knight. It just didn’t seem like the usual project he would tackle, but his involvement offered a glimpse of hope that this project might make the iconic character stand out from the rest. We got our first true glimpse at his character in a poster, as he was showcased seemingly as a leader of some kind of cult – and with him out during daylight, there went our Dracula theories. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he talked about how psychiatrist Carl Jung and the infamous cult leader David Koresh were the inspirations of his character, as he also wanted to avoid the boring clichés you expect from a villainous character.

The uber-rich villain mastermind isn’t interesting to me. I love the ones who believe that they’re a good person and that’s why they have to kill you. That, I find really terrifying.

    Ethan Hawke

It was the series star, Oscar Isaac, that convinced him to join the project after believing he might not be the right choice for a comic book adaptation, but after spending some time with the character, it seems he came to love the idea of tackling a character that doesn’T has as much baggage as others.

So it just became about the project, and it wasn’t an intellectual decision at all; it was like, ‘Oh, let’s do something cool with these guys.’ And the more I learned about the Moon Knight, the more turned on I got, because it’s so much better than trying to create something that the audience already has a big agenda with. Like, if you do Batman or Superman or Hulk, any of these famous ones, the fans have so many preconceived things that they want from it. It’s like playing Hamlet. […] And with Moon Knight, we get to create a world and a character. The fan in me always enjoys the first movie. I love learning about how the hell Captain America came to be — those are my favorite parts of the story.

    Ethan Hawke

He’s certainly a great addition to the project, and he definitely might add something special to make it stand out. Even the trailers were selling us on a more mind-bending adventure than what we are used to within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s hoping we spend quite a bit of time with his character and uncover what exactly his role is throughout the six-episode series.

  • The Appeal of ‘Moon Knight’: Disney+ Finally Matures

The Appeal of ‘Moon Knight’: Disney+ Finally Matures

Not too long ago, we’ve learned that Moon Knight may have become Disney+’s most anticipated entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only did it get the most likes of any series, it even managed to become its second-most-watched entry within 24 hours. It’s crazy to think how popular it is if you consider that Moon Knight has mostly been known either from a meme calling Dracula a nerd or many Batman comparisons. There’s a lot more to the character, of course, but there must be something about this series that appeals to viewers with its trailer.

I think its biggest selling point lies in the tonal change from the rest of the MCU. The Disney+ shows have been unique and offer different takes on what it means to be a hero, villain, and more. Yet, there’s something much darker at play with Moon Knight compared to the rest. It may be similar to why Loki and WandaVision were such darlings during their release, as they offered something truly unique. We’ve seen enough superheroes and now Marvel Studios has started to break the mold. And, on top of it all, they provided one of their best trailers that found the perfect mixture of intrigue, action, and character.

Their next Disney+ series feels like a psychological horror film that was combined into Christopher Nolan‘s Memento. The initial trailer offers so much intrigue that forces anyone to question what is real. Comic fans might fully grasp the many personalities of Marc Spector and the existence of Khonshu, but an everyday viewer will have no clue. All they saw, was this strange monster stalking him, and the way the first trailer implies it may just be in his head. It’s an eye-catcher in many ways, as you might question how real is Moon Knight as a hero in this universe.

Oscar Isaac‘s performance of a mentally disturbed man, fighting to figure out what is real or not would probably drag quite a few people into theaters if this wasn’t a Disney+ series. Throw in the possibility of him becoming a hero more in line with Punisher or Daredevil‘s Netflix run, you might reach an audience that has been clamoring for exactly that. The poster with a bloody crescent moon-shaped weapon certainly seems to promise that Marvel Studios isn’t holding back this time around.

Disney+ is a family-oriented streaming program at the end of the day, and there were concerns that it could hold back Marvel Studios’ expansion. If they can make this concept work within the perceived limitations of a Disney-owned streaming service, the future of Marvel’s darker characters, which includes Daredevil, Punisher, Ghost Rider, and more, seems – for a lack of a better term – quite bright. Moon Knight may be the point where Disney+ starts to mature and opens the floodgates to welcome in more stories like it.
