‘Ms. Marvel’s Head Writer on the Khan Family’s Importance

Family is everything, especially when it comes to teenage superheroes. They are their moral support and help them ease into any challenge that they might face. In the Ms. Marvel comics, Kamala Khan’s family played that role as they also help center her as she navigated the challenging life of being a Pakistani-American. Keeping that alive and also bringing in personal experiences to make them feel like our own family. Head Writer Bisha K. Ali had set out to ensure that remains the same in Ms. Marvel‘s Disney+ series, especially as she wanted to ensure that the Khans are a “realistic, non-stereotypical, Muslim family“.

We know [what] we don’ want to see because we live it. So the intention is always to come from a place of like, ‘Oh, what’s aspirational and beautiful? What don’t people get to see about us?”

    Bisha K. Ali

If there’s one place that truly represents us as people, it’s our family and how we interact with them. Being able to show the beauty and aspects that others don’t get to witness, or those with similar backgrounds get to relive is important to convey in a series like this. The Khans were an important aspect of Kamala’s story in the comics and it’s great that the Disney+ Ms. Marvel series will also stick to that. The last trailer highlighted her relationship with her mother and we’ll see how the rest of her family may influence her evolution as a hero throughout the six-episode series.

  • Iman Vellani on the How Filming ‘The Marvels’ was Different From ‘Ms. Marvel’

Iman Vellani on the How Filming ‘The Marvels’ was Different From ‘Ms. Marvel’

As Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness continues to dominate at the box office, Marvel Studios is already looking ahead to its next release. Ms. Marvel will debut on Disney+ next month, introducing one of Marvel Comics’ brightest heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Starting as Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, is Iman Vellani, who has already wrapped production on yet another MCU project with The Marvels. That film is set to introduce Kamala to her hero, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). While talking about her role as Kamala, Iman teased what it was like working on The Marvels and how it differed from filming Ms. Marvel.

It was absolutely amazing, a completely different experience. You have the same amount of filming time almost to film a lot less content, so everything was more relaxed. And Brie and Teyonah were the most amazing support system, just to have people who have the same pains from doing stunts. We were just crying together. It was awesome.

    Iman Vellani

It remains to be seen how Vellani’s Kamala will make the jump to The Marvels, but it’s clear she enjoyed the filming process. After all, being the lead in a television series can be stressful. In this instance, though, she had support in both Larson and Parris.

Ms. Marvel will debut on Disney+ on June 8th, while The Marvels will hit theaters on July 28, 2023.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ Co-Creator on Iman Vellani’s Casting and Adapting Her Story to the MCU Timeline

‘Ms. Marvel’ Co-Creator on Iman Vellani’s Casting and Adapting Her Story to the MCU Timeline

Moon Knight and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have been dominating the last few weeks, but now it’s time for Marvel to set their eyes on the next release, Ms. Marvel. There’s been some concern with the adaptation, as while the character seems mostly intact from the comics, her abilities have gone through quite the change. The character’s co-creator Sana Amanat talked to Entertainment Weekly to not only talk bout that massive change but also to highlight just how excited they are that Iman Vellani is taking on this role.

There is so much of Kamala in her because I think Kamala has the same type of view of the world. She looks at the world with eager and hopeful eyes, and I think Iman does that, too. You can’t help but root for her and be drawn to her. There are just so many similarities that it felt like such a natural fit to see her put on the costume for the first time [or] see her go into the Khan house for the first time. It just made sense. There’s no other Kamala than Iman Vellani.

    Sana Amanat

That’s not all, as she also discussed how they’ve adapted the project to fit the MCU by remaining true to Ms. Marvel’s storyline from the comics.

The comic was very much a guiding light for us. We needed to make sure that it worked in the MCU, of course, but we wanted to make sure that we had that quirkiness and the stylistic distinction that the comics did so well. We wanted to find our own MCU version of it. So, we’re doing things in this show that we don’t really do anywhere else in the MCU. It’s kind of told through the lens of Kamala’s experience and her wild imagination. I think the brightness and the colors and where we go in the Marvel universe and in Kamala’s universe is really what makes it stand out, tonally and stylistically, from everything else.

    Sana Amanat

The biggest change will also come in the form of how she looks up to Captain Marvel. Carol Danvers never had the identity of Ms. Marvel in the MCU. So, it’s a very different relationship when she takes on that role while still growing into her hero moving forward.

I think that is very, very similar to the comics. Obviously, in the Marvel comics, the story was different. [Carol] was Ms. Marvel in the Marvel comics, and she’s been around for much longer. But in this case, what’s unique is Captain Marvel is one of the few really well-known, big-time female Avengers, if you will. She had a pretty significant save in the battle against Thanos, and I think if someone who was young and looking out at the world, and she sees this really powerful, badass woman almost take down Thanos, what does that do to you? How do you internalize that? I think that is a really important story to tell, not only about who your heroes are, but who are your heroes when you’re a young person of color? What does that do to your sense of self?

    Sana Amanat

It’s great to see that the creators of the character were also heavily involved with the project to ensure that their vision remains intact even in its translation to live-action. She highlights that she was on set and had an active role in bringing the character to life, which just highlights how collaborative the Marvel Studios environment truly is for creators of any kind.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ Co-Creator Sana Amanat Talks on Disney+ Series New Take on Kamala Khan’s Abilities

‘Ms. Marvel’ Co-Creator Sana Amanat Talks on Disney+ Series New Take on Kamala Khan’s Abilities

There has been a lot of debate on the changes made to Ms. Marvel’s abilities. The upcoming Disney+ series by the same name will mostly follow the character of Kamala Khan, who was first introduced back in 2014. Marvel’s first Muslim-American superhero had a very specific ability that many called Embiggening where her body stretches in creative ways or even just grow entirely. Yet, the Ms. Marvel trailers teased she’ll have some crystal and cosmic-inspired abilities. People were concerned about what it might mean for her moving forward, but Ms. Marvel co-creator Sana Amanat has now opened up about the change from the comics.

Amanat played a vital role in bringing the character to life together with writer G. Willow Wilson, artist Adrian Alphona, and editor Steve Wacker. She highlights the adaptation and says she’s also actively discussed the changes with fellow creator Willow highlighting they agreed with the direction the project took with her abilities.

Obviously, so much of the show is an adaptation, and we thought it was important to make sure that her powers are linking to larger stories in the Marvel universe. We wanted to make sure there is a little bit more story to tell after this series. Obviously, she goes into The Marvels. The powers do look different, which is very controversial. I know people are like, “How dare you change the powers!” I know people are upset about it, but as someone who’s probably one of the closest people to this character from the inception, and having spoken to Willow about this as well, I think Willow and I have always felt that this made sense. This was the right move because there are bigger stories to tell.

    Sana Amanat

One might argue that sacrificing her original abilities for “bigger stories” to tell, but that may further hint that we’ll get a better view of why the changes were made once the series releases on Disney+. It also seems like Amanat confirms that the metaphorical and visual standpoint of the abilities will remain even with their more cosmic direction.

It’s really fun to give Kamala different kinds of powers that feel big in scope and cinematic in a different way. We can do a lot of fun things with her. I don’t want to spoil too much about how she uses her powers, but they’re fun and bouncy. At the same point, the essence of what the powers are in the comics is there, both from a metaphorical standpoint and from a visual standpoint. We’re doing the embiggened fist. We’re doing the elements that make her feel and look kind of crazy, but also really cool. I think it’s going to be familiar to people, but at the same time, different in a fresh and unique way.

    Sana Amanat

The powers haven’t been highlighted too much in the trailers. So, we’ll see how exactly it might tackle these themes that made the character stand out in the past. Many that have been worried about the adaptation point out that it takes away from her character, but it seems that is something they’ve definitely going to remain while promising it’s simply just a “fresh” perspective on something comic readers have come to love over the years.

  • Kevin Feige Discusses the Changes to Ms. Marvel’s Powers

Kevin Feige Discusses the Changes to Ms. Marvel’s Powers

With Moon Knight having concluded, we can further turn out attention to Ms Marvel premiering at the beginning of June. Being such a new hero in the Marvel Universe at large, there has been a lot of fan discussion about how Kamala Khan might be adapted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kevin Feige has been speaking to Empire and confirmed some details about Kamala’s powers in the Disney+ show.

The continuity of Marvel’s comics and films and shows storyworlds move at different paces and are on different journeys. The difference between these storyworlds at the time Kamala joined both has led to a slightly different kind of adaptation of Kamala’s powers and their aesthetic Feige tells Empire:

We adapt the comics; it’s not an exact translation. [Kamala] came about in a very specific time within the comic-book continuity. She is now coming into a very specific time within the MCU continuity. And those two things didn’t match. […] She’s interested in knowing, ‘Great, does that mean I’m an Asgardian? Did I get hit with gamma rays?’ No, it’s seemingly none of those things. It goes to her own past and her heritage and lineage.

    Kevin Feige

Continuing, Feige suggests Kamala’s awareness and integration with the superhero media industry will point her in the direction of learning more about her powers as the show unfolds:

What we will learn about where those powers come from, and how they come about, is specific to the MCU. You will see great comic splash panels in some of our action sequences. If you want big, giant hands and arms, well they’re here in spirit, if not in stretchy, plastic-type ways.

    Kevin Feige

Finally, Feige gives a clue as to why this adaptation of Kamala is altering her powers somewhat:

It taps into the future of her story as it connects to her other friends that she will meet in the upcoming film The Marvels

    Kevin Feige

It seems like lots of thought has gone into the context in which Kamala Khan will appear in the MCU. Feige’s mention of lineage is also particularly intriguing when we think about the lineage and origin of her powers in the comics. It strikes me that Feige and the Parliament might be playing the long game with revealing exactly where Kamala’s powers come from, perhaps. Without a weekly Marvel Studios Disney+ show on right now, the anticipation for Ms Marvel is building, and it will be exciting to see Kamala’s story start to play out in early June.

  • Farhan Akhtar Confirmed to Appear in ‘Ms. Marvel’

Farhan Akhtar Confirmed to Appear in ‘Ms. Marvel’

Moon Knight only recently finished up its six-episode season and the focus is already on the future, as Deadline just dropped a confirmation that Bollywood star Farhan Akhtar has joined the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series in a guest-starring role. They do not know which role exactly he will tackle, but that he’ll have a smaller role as part of the Disney+ series that follows Iman Vellani‘s Kamala Khan, who ends up receiving mysterious powers and may finally have an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of her favorite superheroes.

It’s interesting to note that Akhtar was already announced to have joined the project back in April of 2021 by India Today, who stated that he was filming in Bangkok at the time. He may be playing a relative of Kamala’s, as they were filming in that location as a backdrop for a family visit from the Khans. Though, it’s also possible he’s playing someone they meet during their time there.

Ms. Marvel is only a little over a month away and will be our second story within the MCU that explores a young superhero trying to find their place in the world. Unlike Spider-Man, she’ll have no one to truly guide her and will be shaped by the people around her. Here’s hoping the storyline focuses on the support system surrounding Kamala and how important they are to shaping her as a hero, even more than the ones she looks up to.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ to Release in Pakistani Theaters as 3 Parts

‘Ms. Marvel’ to Release in Pakistani Theaters as 3 Parts

Disney and Marvel Studios have something special planned for their upcoming release of Ms. Marvel. While it’s still planned as a weekly release on Disney+ worldwide, it seems like there will be a special release in Pakistan. Ms. Marvel will release in theaters across the country. Not only will they create a special format for all six episodes, but it’ll be made available in three parts.

As revealed by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy on her official Instagram account, the six episodes will release in batches of two, which are set to find their way to Pakistani theaters on June 16th, June 30th, and finally on July 14th. It’s a way to celebrate the first Pakistani Marvel superhero and offer it to the country that doesn’t yet have Disney+ access.

This move is definitely a great showcase of respecting the cultural background of the character and making it easier to access for those that don’t have the service. It wouldn’t be too surprising if this new theatrical release model becomes a standard for those countries that don’t yet have access to the streaming service. If the film manages to pull in an audience over the course of all three releases, it might definitely also offer a great alternative for those countries that may otherwise not have any access to the service moving forward.

  • More ‘Ms. Marvel’ Promo Art Teases Her Iconic Line from the Comics

More ‘Ms. Marvel’ Promo Art Teases Her Iconic Line from the Comics

It looks like more Ms. Marvel promo art is finding its way online. The last time we shared it, we noticed it offered the best look yet at Red Dagger. Most of it just highlighted Iman Vellani in her Ms. Marvel costume, which ironically is our best close-up of her design. Yet, @MsMarvelUK has shared a few more with one standing out for including an iconic line that she’s said in the comics and even in Marvel’s Avengers game. The line became famous as the original comic storyline saw her say this as she made her own costume.

Because sometimes you need superhero quotes to push through a year and make it to the next, and because sometimes...bees. | Comics, Superhero quotes, Marvel

There are two visuals highlighting the line which also keeps the fun design aesthetic they are seemingly going for with Ms. Marvel. The latest trailer drop also included this design aesthetic which made for a unique design to stick out from the rest, while highlighting her teenage fan mentality.

It does seem unlikely that she’ll say the line early on, but it seems clearer that they could use this as the emotional climax before she faces whatever threat that’ll make her life a living hell in the series. We surprisingly still know very little about who the enemies will end up being for her adventure, especially with the Inhuman elements seemingly removed. Yet, they may use this chance to slowly build up that part of the universe, especially with the upcoming appearance of Mutants as well. So, they might reinvent their mythology to avoid too many comparisons between the two. For now, it’s just speculation but we’ll know more once June rolls around.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ Co-Creator on Iman Vellani’s Casting

‘Ms. Marvel’ Co-Creator on Iman Vellani’s Casting

With the premiere Ms. Marvel coming at the start of June, we’re starting to hear a bit more about the show. Sana Amanat, who co-created the character, is working on the show as an executive producer. She has been talking to Total Film about Iman Vellani’s audition as the titular character and Kamala Khan’s place in the Marvel Universe. Amanat describes Vellani’s acting prowess in her auditions in parallel to how she views Kamala Khan:

She just had this energy, and this innocence, and this quirkiness to her […] In one of her auditions, she really went from being very nerdy and quirky, to emotional and almost like she had this understanding of a world that someone beyond her years should have.

    Sana Amanat

Similarly, Amanat describes Kamala’s place in the Marvel Universe as one going from a fan to a powerful person in her own right:

She’s this young character who is very much a fan of the bigwigs of the Marvel Universe like the Avengers, and she doesn’t feel necessarily like she can stand toe to toe with them. But I think, ultimately, she can, and she does.

    Sana Amanat

Ms. Marvel is the second Marvel Studios Disney+ this year to introduce us to a new character in the MCU. Kamala Khan is more instantly connected to the universe around her as a fangirl. The multitudes of identities she embodies as a superhero, fangirl, teenager, and Muslim will be fascinating to see play out. Similarly, Iman Vellani’s career will be fascinating to watch as she takes off from Ms. Marvel and into The Marvels.

  • New ‘Ms. Marvel’ Promo Art Offers loser Look at Red Dagger’s Design

New ‘Ms. Marvel’ Promo Art Offers loser Look at Red Dagger’s Design

While we’re focused on that amazing fifth episode of Moon Knight, it still looks like promo art has found its way online for Ms. Marvel to add a little extra to the Marvel day. As shared by @CineGeekNews, some more promo art continues to put the focus on our titular hero Kamala Khan with a great visual inspired by the comics. There are also her drawings of Captain Marvel, Wasp, and Valkyrie that we saw in the initial trailer. Yet, there is one that stands out the most, it’s our first look at the MCU’s Red Dagger.

Aramis Knight joined the Disney+ series as the vigilante known as Red Dagger and we did get a tease of his look in the series during the first trailer, but it was a bit difficult to fully make out. Luckily, the new promo art not only confirms he’ll retain his superhero name but offers our best look at his design with the iconic red scarf and even his iconic daggers.

His design is quite faithful to the version we saw in the comics. We don’t know if his story will also follow a similar beat to the storyline that inspires the Disney+ series. They will definitely make some changes if her new abilities are anything to go by, but they are seemingly trying to keep the original spirit of the character alive. She’s a teenager and will probably struggle quite a bit with her new role, especially as she also has to somehow keep up with her school work and home responsibilities.
