  • Taking a Closer Look at the Potential Origin of Ms. Marvel’s New Abilities

Taking a Closer Look at the Potential Origin of Ms. Marvel’s New Abilities

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has consistently looked to the comics for inspiration in its adaptations. We saw it with the Superhero Registration Act being turned into the Sokovia Accords or even recently having Marc Spector waking up in an institution. Some adaptations are straightforward, while others are altered slightly to fit an overarching story. Carol Danvers, to give an example didn’t get her powers from the Space Stone in the comics. With Phase 4 seemingly being all about legacy and the responsibility that God-like beings hold, it shouldn’t be a surprise then to see more connections bringing these themes together. Perhaps they are already planning the seeds with Kamala Khan’s new powers.

In the first trailer for Ms. Marvel, we got to see how Kamala’s powers are being adapted for Disney+. It revealed that she was going to become a more cosmic-powered superhero similar to the two other “marvels” that now exist within the MCU rather than the traditional Embigenning abilities from the comics. Yet, it opens up the question of where exactly these newfound powers come from. As mentioned previously, Captain Marvel received her powers from the Space Stone. The other member of The Marvels, Monica Rambeau, also was given abilities indirectly through an Infinity Stone. Could we see the same with Kamala?

The trailer may be the key to finding out just how she gains her abilities. We see her put on bracelets of some kind and are surrounded by a mysterious energy. Perhaps there’s a chance that what she is wearing is the MCU’s version of the Quantum Bands? In the comics, the cosmic entity and Eternal known as Eon would acquire these mysterious artifacts from Kronos, the father of Zeus, who was just recently teased in the first Thor: Love and Thunder trailer.

In the comics, Eon was originally trying to find ways to counteract Thanos’ plans. He gave Mar-Vell the knowledge and weapons needed to attempt to stop the Mad Titans. Perhaps something similar happened in the MCU. At the time, we all wondered how Carol Danvers arrived back on Earth at precisely the right time in Avengers: Endgame, and this could easily be how. As we see more and more godly entities within the MCU, it wouldn’t be too out there that Eon also has found his place within the cinematic universe and through Carol Danvers’ travel to earth, she brought them with her.

As their name implies, they pull their energy from the Quantum Zone, which we were introduced to in the Ant-Man franchise as the Quantum Realm. So, there are already enough elements within the MCU to build up the connection of her abilities being based on the Quantum Bands. They might change the origin, as even the Tesseract was originally the Cosmic Cube and had no relation to the Infinity Stones in the comics. So, they could even have a connection to an Infinity Stone similar to keep the connective tissue between Marvel’s abilities. Perhaps upcoming trailers might help solidify that very connection as we near its June release.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ Receives the MCU’s First TV-PG Rating

‘Ms. Marvel’ Receives the MCU’s First TV-PG Rating

While there has been plenty of discourse on whether or not Marvel Studios should be tackling darker and more violent stories, the MCU’s home on Disney+ has made that more contentious than it has been in the past. With the recent re-homing of Marvel properties such as Daredevil and The Punisher to the streaming service, there has been some discussion on whether Disney+ should be sticking to more “family-friendly” offerings. The currently-running MCU series, Moon Knight is being hailed by many to be Marvel Studios’ most violent to date.

Those looking for an MCU installment that is geared to younger or more wholesome audiences are in luck. Disney+ revealed that the next MCU series, Ms. Marvel, will be rated TV-PG, making it the first time that any Marvel Studios movie or series has received a rating this low. All MCU movies to date have been rated PG-13, and every Disney+ MCU series to date has been rated TV-14, which is the television equivalent of a PG-13 rating.

    Ms. Marvel Rating

Ms. Marvel recently unveiled its first trailer and set up a story focused on Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan. It is perhaps not too surprising that a series about a teenage girl set in a high school-type setting would be the first series to nab a PG rating, though the MCU has dealt with similar ages and setting in its Tom Holland-led Spider-Man trilogy.

The battle over the streaming service’s ability to provide a family-friendly service while also showcasing its incredibly successful range of more mature properties will surely rage on. Recently, some fans spotted shots in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that had been edited to be less violent, but Disney+ quickly retracted the altered scenes. At the very least, it does not look like Ms. Marvel will pose much of a challenge for the streaming service on that front.

  • Closer Look at Iman Vellani’s ‘Ms. Marvel’ Costume Revealed During New Marvel Event

Closer Look at Iman Vellani’s ‘Ms. Marvel’ Costume Revealed During New Marvel Event

It seems that there was a new event held on Marvel Studios’ upcoming projects in Thailand, as a fan account titled @marvel_thai shared some photos from the event. Long time Marvel fan and Thai actor Nanon Korapat was promoting the event where they teased some of their upcoming new live-action projects. Among them was a short panel teasing their Disney+ seires with a closer look at Ms. Marvel’s design alongside Moon Knight. It offers a better look at Iman Vellani‘s take on the character.

Most of her costume was hidden away in the initial trailer, but the high quality image taken does offer a chance to zoom in on the details. What is noticeable right away are the shoulder pads and the addition of some texture on her arms. Commonly characters get more details added to their characters once they enter live-action, as it makes them stand out more than a simpler color scheme outfit.

Sadly, they did not include a new look of Tatiana Maslany for She-Hulk’s upcoming series, but there was also a showcase for the upcoming film releases and only Doctor Strange was showcased. It’s unclear if they announced or teased anything, but it seems mostly like a general Marvel event for fans to talk about current projects. I will say, I do quite love the way they displayed the characters and wished they would use that over here as well.

  • New ‘Ms. Marvel’ Merch Teases New Jersey Avengercon

New ‘Ms. Marvel’ Merch Teases New Jersey Avengercon

While we have gotten a few teases in the first Ms. Marvel trailer, merchandise has found its way online featuring a print that confirms the event all about Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. It also seems to tease various events that visitors can try out during their visit like Hulk’s Rage Room, which are actually real things that you can visit–just without the Hulk branding. Of course, as it is Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel also gets highlighted as the “Cosmic Avenger.” The other posters also offer a better look at her new costume for the series, highlighting some doodles we saw from her active imagination in the trailer. The photos were found by @TimmyTakout.

It’ll be interesting to see what other merchandise might find its way online, as something like Avengercon seems like the perfect idea to build creative merchandise around. It’s ironically not the first time such an event was used to introduce Ms. Marvel’s transformation into a superhero, as Marvel’s Avengers used a similar concept with A-Day. It’s funny to see two creative teams build a similar concept for their adaptation of the character.

The first trailer has teased an exciting slice-of-life meets superhero series that’ll explore what it’s like to be a teenager wanting to become a hero. We still don’t know if any Avenger will make an appearance in the series, as you’d think one would appear during an event called Avengercon. Maybe they include some fun Easter eggs, like an actor that voices Iron Man or Captain America on an animated series to poke fun at the many Variants that are out there. We’ll see if the next trailer might offer a closer look at Avengercon.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’s Trailer May Hint at Kamala Khan’s Ability to Polymorph After All

‘Ms. Marvel’s Trailer May Hint at Kamala Khan’s Ability to Polymorph After All

There has been quite a bit of a heated debate when it came to the upcoming Ms. Marvel series and the handling of her abilities. Most of the trailer highlights that she has a new take on her powers that seem to be powered by bracelets rather than her Inhuman genes. Even the first promotional photo seemed to hint that she is just creating a crystal fist out of energy rather than polymorphing her own. Yet, if you look closely, the trailer might actually reveal that she has the ability to polymorph after all and it might even tie into her story arc.

The trailer has this odd trend of teasing Kamala shooting out her crystalized fist but doesn’t really show us the full movement of the ability. We either see her fist jet out in the corner of a frame against Red Dagger, or just her already retracting it. There’s this odd sense of the trailer purposefully keeping elements hidden from the viewer. We rarely see Kamala in action fighting. Yet, some scenes do hint at her having the ability to polymorph, especially when we see her leaping in the air.

At first, I believed that it was just an energy field expanding on her body, but if you take a close look, her limbs are stretching out during her leap. While the focus has been on the ability to create crystal lily pads to jump off from, her body is definitely being warped as she moves closer and clenches her fist to hit whatever she is aiming for. We don’t linger on this shot long enough to really get a good look, and it might connect to a later scene as she faces off against a SWAT team protecting someone from their shots, as she has her full costume on.

Of course, one visual isn’t a confirmation just yet if it weren’t for one more moment in the trailer that shows her limbs stretched out. Towards the end, there’s a brief sequence with a shockwave pushing various cars into the air. It’s only a few seconds long, but if you look closely in the corner, it’s Ms. Marvel creating the shockwave. Yet, what stands out is not only the pose that many might recall from the comics and even the Marvel’s Avengers game, but her body seems to be stretched in a similar manner as well. You can see that her legs are quite a bit longer and her body seems proportionally off in a way that you’d see when she does a ground pound attack while embiggened in other media.

The only element that seems to be pure crystal is her fists, but if the previous image of her leaping is an indicator, her body might be changing underneath that layer. So, the trailers do make a case that she has the ability to polymorph, but it’s not the focus of what’s being shown. Keep in mind, Ms. Marvel’s ability to polymorph is a bit more complicated than just stretching her body. In the comics, she is exchanging mass with herself at a different point in time. So, she technically travels through time on a molecular level every time she changes her form. So, the crystals might be a visual representation of that ability.

There’s a chance that it’s connected to the Quantum Realm, as it is how the Avengers traveled through time back in Avengers: Endgame. If they still want to build up her Inhuman background, perhaps the crystals in the gauntlet are Terrigen that activate her dormant abilities to tap into the time traveling-realm. The visual addition is due to it temporarily acting as a conduit as long as she is wearing it. While it doesn’t explain the lily pad and shield abilities, it may be that she’s using the gauntlet as a way to siphon the energy from the Quantum Realm into reality. Her imagination is a big focus of the trailer and it could be how she brings them to reality.

I’d even argue that she might lose the gauntlets by the end of the season, and it may result in her realizing that she doesn’t have to depend on them. It would make for a great story arc for her character, and could still build up towards her inherent Inhuman nature. The comics had the advantage of a Terrigen bomb going off and creating a world filled with Nuhumans. There was the promotional material that did tease the crystal fist with a smaller one underneath, which hasn’t changed, but they could’ve adapted it going into the reshoots to add the polymorph ability after seeing some of the feedback online. We’ll have to see if a new trailer might give us a better look at her new abilities and if she is polymorphing after all. My only wish is that she actually shouts Embiggening.

  • First ‘Ms. Marvel’ Trailer Offers First Look at Disney+’s Take on Her Embiggening Powers in Action

First ‘Ms. Marvel’ Trailer Offers First Look at Disney+’s Take on Her Embiggening Powers in Action

The first trailer has finally arrived for Ms. Marvel, which will release earlier than expected with a June 8th premiere. Not only did we get a release date, but it also finally gave us our first full look at her new abilities, which are quite the departure from her comic origins. Instead of stretching her body, her abilities seem to be strongly based on creating constructs based on energy. We see her wear gauntlets that activate her powers, echoing Captain Marvel gaining her own in the 2019 film. Luckily, we later did get a visual inspired by the Embiggening powers that she had in the comics, but the giant fist is made of crystal.

It does seem like she won’t be just creating constructs, as we also get teases of her being able to use it in creative ways. We briefly see her using her new abilities to close her door before her father walks in. She doesn’t seem like she is wearing her gauntlets in this sequence though.

    Image

We also briefly see her using the abilities like additional armor over her arms and legs. So, we might expect a lot of creative uses of these powers even if it’s a shame they are moving away from her polymorph abilities from the comics. They seemingly wanted to build a stronger connection between her and the hero she looks up to.

    Image

the trailer does look great and it does seem to take a lot of inspiration from modern high school series, like Netflix’s Never Have I Ever. It’ll be interesting to see if she has to struggle with her abilities even if she is no longer Inhuman seemingly. Of course, who knows if they also take a different direction with her character to build up towards that development. For now, you can watch the full trailer here:

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ Adds Anjali Bhimani in a Recurring Role

‘Ms. Marvel’ Adds Anjali Bhimani in a Recurring Role

With Ms. Marvel originally eyeing a release last year, we didn’t quite expect any casting announcements for the series, but it looks like there were still some surprises. Deadline has shared that Anjali Bhimani has a recurring role in the upcoming Disney+ series. As is par of the course, any details regarding her character remain under wraps. is taking on the role of the Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey, who first made her debut back in 2014.

This isn’t the actress’s first Marvel series, as she also previously worked on Marvel TV’s Runaway series. She played an employee at Wizard named Mita Nansari, and it’ll be interesting to see what role she’ll tackle in the Disney+ series. She also had roles in series like Special Station 19, Modern Family, as well as Grace and Frankie. She joins a cast consisting of Laurel Marsden, Rish Shah, Saagar Shaikh, Matt Lintz, and Aramis Knight.

Bisha K. Ali is the project’s head writer with a directing team consisting of Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Meera Menon. As mentioned previously, the Disney+ series was originally going to premiere in 2021 but ended up getting pushed back all the way to the summer of this year. We still don’t have an exact release date, but we do know that it’ll be the next release after Moon Knight and a premiere seem to be planned for early June. So, it’ll likely release around then.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’s Premiere Scheduled for June, May Hint at Disney+ Release

‘Ms. Marvel’s Premiere Scheduled for June, May Hint at Disney+ Release

We’ve been discussing back-and-forth when the next Marvel Studios Disney+ series may premiere. While we’re still waiting for Moon Knight‘s to release by the end of the month, it seems that we got more information on when Ms. Marvel‘s summer release might be. New information provided by Hollywood Partnership, who blocks off streets for Hollywood-related events may have given us our first hint at when the series will make its debut on Disney+.

They’ve shared information that Hollywood Blvd. will be closed down for a Ms. Marvel premiere from June 2nd until June 3rd. As these red carpet premieres are usually shortly before the release on Disney+, it may confirm a June release on Disney+. Yet, they might also have the premiere event a week or so ahead. As Obi-Wan Kenobi releases by the end of May 2022, it might be a bit later due to Disney+ generally avoiding overlaps for their series.

    Image

There’s still no official word from Disney on the release outside that She-Hulk won’t release until after its premiere on Disney+. We usually get it around two to three months ahead of its premiere. So, an April confirmation seems very likely if it is indeed going to release in June. Right now, Marvel Studios is focused on its release of Moon Knight and we’ll still have to wait just a little longer until we get an official word.

  • ‘She-Hulk’ Won’t Release Until After ‘Ms. Marvel’ on Disney+

‘She-Hulk’ Won’t Release Until After ‘Ms. Marvel’ on Disney+

Marvel Studios has announced quite a few series on Disney+, but it has not always been forthcoming as to the release dates of the MCU entries. While Moon Knight will premiere on March 30, we do not have dates for the other announced 2022 Disney+ projects. Most notably, the highly-anticipated She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel series are not officially connected to any dates at this time. But it looks like we finally have at least some update on those.

During Disney’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders, CEO Bob Chapek confirmed that Ms. Marvel will be the next series after Moon Kight. He also stated that She-Hulk would be released “later this year” after Ms. Marvel. While this is disappointing news for She-Hulk fans, it does give more shape to the MCU’s Disney+ 2022 calendar. Ms. Marvel has previously been confirmed to have a summer 2022 release date, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will likely drop late in the year. The leaves a late summer or fall release date wide open for She-Hulk.

The news will come as a bit of a surprise to MCU fans, as the Tatiana Maslany-led She-Hulk has been in the works for quite some time. The series is also expected to bring back big names like Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth in addition to fan-pleasing cameos. The series will also play a role in the lead up to Marvel Studios’ World War Hulk film. The news means that fans will have to wait a bit longer for She-Hulk than they may have been expecting, but they can rest assured knowing that the series is once more confirmed to be a 2022 release.

  • Bob Chapek Hints That ‘She-Hulk’ Won’t Release Until After ‘Ms. Marvel’

Bob Chapek Hints That ‘She-Hulk’ Won’t Release Until After ‘Ms. Marvel’

There have been some interesting small mentions from Disney’s Earnings Call that give us a clearer hint on what we can expect from Marvel Studios’ planned 2022 Disney+ release schedule. Not only did we uncover when exactly we can expect their next cinematic release to hit the streaming service, but we also got a hint at when we can expect the other series. So far, Moon Knight’s March 30th release is the only one confirmed, but it looks like we have a clearer picture of the future.

At one point during the call, he revealed that She-Hulk won’t release until after Ms. Marvel hit the streaming service. It further confirms the Marvel Japan schedule that leaked back in late January where we also saw She-Hulk as the last Disney+ release for the year. There was no mention of the animated project I Am Groot, but it seems very likely that this was the intended schedule, especially as it follows 2021’s schedule.

Marvel Studios may be focusing on releasing three live-action shows a year with an animated shortly after the summer. So, we might expect I Am Groot around the same release window that What If…? had. Of course, it won’t be the exact same structure especially as She-Hulk isn’t a holiday-themed project. So, it may release in the early Fall rather than closer to the Holidays. Plus, there’s still the question if we might expect The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special this year, which makes sense given the release of the third film in 2023. Still, it’s great to have a clearer picture of what to expect moving forward.
