  • ‘What If…?’ Wins Best Animated Series at the Critic’s Choice Awards

‘What If…?’ Wins Best Animated Series at the Critic’s Choice Awards

It looks like it was a big night for Marvel Studios at the Critic’s Choice Awards, as they managed to take in one win during the event with What If…? nabbing the Best Animated Series award. In a strong year for animation, it’s a big win for Marvel Studios especially with it being their first venture into animation. Some might question why Arcane isn’t nominated, but the Netflix series sadly wasn’t eligible due to the cut-off date for the awards. What If…? was going up against other titles which include Big Mouth, Bluey, Bob’s Burgers, The Great North, and Q-Force.

Dune. WandaVision was nominated for Best Limited Series but lost against Mare of Eastwood. Paul Bettany, Elisabeth Olsen, and Kathryn Hahn were both nominated for Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress respectively but didn’t take the win home. So, it’s great to see Marvel studios manage to take home at least one award after also mostly being kept out of the Oscars again in their go-to visual effects category.

Of course, we recently heard that What If…? will return this year with a new season, which adds further credence to their plans of this animated project being a yearly release. It’s unclear if future seasons will unshackle itself from having to forcefully follow specific set storylines, but it does seem like the Guardians of the Multiverse maybe something from the past. Of course, they may also find a recurring villain breaking the multiverse to call them to action once again. We’ll see once we learn more about the next season.

  • First Look at Amazon Prime’s ‘Undone’ Season 2

First Look at Amazon Prime’s ‘Undone’ Season 2

One of 2019’s most unique series is back for another round on Amazon Prime, and the streaming service has just unveiled its first official look at the show’s second season. Undone, an adult comedy-drama series from Bojack Horseman creators Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy was released almost three years ago to critical acclaim but to little social fanfare.

The series, the first episodic project to use rotoscope animation, focuses on the life of Rosa Salazar’s Alma Winograd-Diaz after a near-fatal car accident allows her to experience time differently than everyone else. Undone‘s first season followed Alma as she sought to uncover the truth behind her father’s death and get a handle on her newfound abilities.

The second season will finally premiere on April 29th after an extended hiatus. In the next set of episodes, Alma realizes there are deeper mysteries at play in her family’s past. Unfortunately, nobody is interested in helping her dig up uncomfortable truths until she’s able to convince her sister Becca to assist. As they search for answers, they will unravel a complex network of memories and motivations that have shaped who they are today. Furthermore, they’ll learn just how powerful it can be to truly heal family trauma.

Alongside Salazar, Undone stars Constance Marie, Angelique Cabral, and fan-favorite actor Bob Odenkirk. Amsterdam-based animation studio Submarine and artist Hisko Hulsing return to bring the characters to life using a variety of mediums. These include oil painting on canvas for the backgrounds and animating over live-action performances.

  • ‘Echo’s Location Manager Teases ‘Hawkeye’ Spinoff’s Story and Scale

‘Echo’s Location Manager Teases ‘Hawkeye’ Spinoff’s Story and Scale

While most of our attention is on the upcoming releases, Marvel Studios is already preparing to start production on their next projects. It wasn’t until Disney+ Day that we got the official confirmation for the Echo series, which was rumored long before Hawkeye even released. We still know very little about the story and how it may build-out of the finale from that series, especially in her confrontation with Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Kingpin. A small piece in the Newnan Times-Herald may offer our first tease t the scope for this story.

A production titled “Grasshopper” has been confirmed to start production there which so happens to be one of the production titles used for Echo. It was initially known as “Whole Branzino” but the company tends to use a multitude throughout productions nowadays. It seems that the film has gotten their hands on permits to film in Grantville Supposedly the production will prep in May with the backdrop being used for establishing shots.

The interesting part here is that Ryan Schaetzle, the location manager for this production, has offered a few minor details on the production. First off, the previously mentioned dates are seemingly only intended for two episodes. So, they may return for more permits as the rest are still being written. According to Schaetzle, the story will focus on a small town that Grantville will be a part of.

Hawkeye' Directors Bert & Bertie on Bringing Echo to Life Onscreen With Alaqua Cox

In a way, it hints that Alaqua Cox‘s take on Maya Lopez might flee the city after the events of Hawkeye. After taking a shot at the Kingpin, she tries to follow her roots and could be returning to her family that lives outside of New York City. It seems rather implied that Kingpin will survive the confrontation, and he might try to take her back by sending people after her threatening the local town. As the series is still being written, there’s a chance that this may also only take up a few episodes before she returns to the city for a final confrontation.

It’s only speculation based on the little information that has been provided, but it focusing on a small town does seem fitting for the character. Lopez is a more grounded character, especially in how we were introduced to her in Hawkeye. So, it makes sense that they’d take that approach. perhaps it even plays into classic stories featuring small towns rising up against corporate people trying to buy it out. Given her Native-American heritage, there’s an important story to be told here through her eyes.

  • Leaked ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Set Photos Tease Sith-Themed Mandalorians

Leaked ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Set Photos Tease Sith-Themed Mandalorians

The continuation of Din Djarin’s story has been highly anticipated after The Book of Boba Fett gave us the reunion of Baby Yoda and Djarin. While it felt a bit sudden shortly after they separated, it did open up a lot of possibilities on what The Mandalorian Season 3 might explore. It’s almost impossible to predict what direction they might take, but a slew of set photos have leaked online that may offer a glimpse into what they’re planning.

What stands out in the images are the bright red Mandalorian-like helmets. They seem to share the same color as the Sith Troopers that we see in the sequel trilogy, but with the overall design used for Mandalorian helmets. The split in the middle is the only oddity in its design. The third image does hint at another empire base being visited. Perhaps a group of rogue Mandalorians has aligned themselves with them. The material also seems to be closer to Trooper armor rather than the usual Beskar. Plus, don’t have any horns, which excludes a connection to Darth Maul’s time as the ruler of Mandalore. It’ll be interesting to see how these factor into the series whenever it premieres.

The Empire is probably still after poor Grogu, who still has an affinity for using the Force. Perhaps his action son Tatooine might have put him back on their radar, as he and his father are on the run. The Mandalorian also set up an eventual battle for Mandalore, as Djarin would become the person to wield the Darksaber. So, we’ll see if these helmets are from those hunting him down.

  • Michael Giacchino Confirmed to Direct Marvel Studios’ First Halloween Disney+ Special

Michael Giacchino Confirmed to Direct Marvel Studios’ First Halloween Disney+ Special

It’s been quite some time since we first heard about Marvel Studios working on a Disney+ Halloween special. the idea is exciting, as there are a lot of characters to choose from with rumors going crazy that it’ll be focused on Werewolf by Night. A recent interview on The Batman‘s score even added more hints that composer Michael Giacchino was taking on directing duties. for an unnamed Marvel Studios project Now, we finally have the official confirmation that he is indeed tackling the Halloween special.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed his involvement with the project, which is eyeing a production start at some point this month in Atlanta. Laura Donnelly and Gael Garcia Bernal are involved with the project; castings we’ve heard about for some time now. The article does add that Bernal is very likely taking on the role of a werewolf in the project. They also mention that music played a key part in the recent revamp that helped the character control his abilities. Perhaps that was also an inspiration to have the composer tackle the project.

The project still remains untitled and hasn’t been officially announced what it’s about. It’s interesting they are introducing a character initially introduced in Moon Knight #32, but it doesn’t seem like there will be a connection with his upcoming series. Though we still have some time until it releases and perhaps we’ll get a post-credit announcement for the spinoff with Moon Knight facing off against the unlikely foe in the special.

‘One Piece’s Iñaki Godoy Shares What it Means to Play Luffy

Netflix is taking a deep dive into live-action adaptations of popular anime and manga franchises. While Cowboy Bebop sadly got canceled after only one season, all eyes are on the One Piece series to hopefully manage what the previous project couldn’t. Young actor Iñaki Godoy will take on the daunting task of bringing Monkey D. Luffy to life in the upcoming series and shares his excitement about taking on the role in an interview with Vanity Teen.

To portray a character like Luffy is one of the greatest honors of my career and I know that this experience will stay with me forever regardless of the outcome.

    Iñaki Godoy

The actor is aware of the fact that taking on this role is nothing to take lightly, as he talks about his hopes that the fans enjoy the series they are putting together.

I hope fans will enjoy the live-action just asmuch as I’m enjoying working on it. This show is making me grow as both an actor and person. I’m nervous, but I’m way more excited.

The creative team behind the project has been sharing their love for the franchise and adding a lot of hope for fans of Eiichiro Oda‘s manga series that they’ll faithfully recreate the series in live-action. We’re slowly seeing more from the set and while we’re still far away from the release, it does build up some anticipation. What helps is seeing the dedication of the cast that are all-in for this new franchise.

  • RUMOR: ‘Secret Invasion’ May Continue Production in Canada for a Single Day

RUMOR: ‘Secret Invasion’ May Continue Production in Canada for a Single Day

We’ve been closely following the production of Secret Invasion, especially after their shoot in London led to a bunch of set photos finding their way online. We still know very little about the production, which is great considering there will be quite a few surprises throughout but we have learned that now as the production wrapped production, it seems they have one more location planned.

the Midgard Times has shared that the Disney+ series has one last one-day shoot planned in Toronto, Canada. While it’s a very brief shot, it seems that preparations have already started and whatever it may end up being is teased as something massive. While no information is shared beyond the additional production day, the set tease may hint at an indoor shot to hide some elements for Secret Invasion. It could also be for the potential post-credit sequence.

The production is likely going to not be released until 2023, especially with its ties to The Marvels. We don’t know if we might expect Carol Danvers to potentially have a role in taking down the Skrulls. We might have to wait quite a bit longer until we get any additional information on the series, but perhaps we’ll get a tease during D23 which finally returns this year. Here’s hoping we find out what the future has in store for Marvel Studios by then.

  • ‘Daredevil’ & Co.’s Addition to Disney+ Draws Criticism of Supposedly Destroying the Disney Brand

‘Daredevil’ & Co.’s Addition to Disney+ Draws Criticism of Supposedly Destroying the Disney Brand

Disney+ made quite the headlines when they announced that shows like Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and more from the Netflix era are making their way to the streaming service. While these projects have an older demographic, the service will include parental control. Mature content isn’t new to the service, as specific markets include it through the Star branding, but it seems that this move has gotten the attention of the Parents Television Council, who have slammed Disney for their decision. Its President Tim Winter had made the following statement:

For more than 98 years, the Walt Disney Company has been synonymous with the words Family Friendly, and I can think of no other corporation in American history that has been built more squarely on the backs – and on the wallets – of parents and families. The company’s eponymous platform Disney Plus logically marketed itself as a family-friendly streaming service, and parents have placed their trust in Disney to deliver just that

    Tim Winter

He goes on to make false comparisons, such as Disney World “adding live striptease performances in Fantasyland” to make its point. Parental control is also mentioned, but they believe that the mere existence of R-rated content violates the trust of families. It’s curious considering that What If…? actively promoted episodes featuring zombies that are also killed throughout the episode.

There is no need for Disney Plus to compete with the explicit content on other streaming platforms. Disney is already at a competitive advantage with a streaming platform that is the safest one out there for families. Its foray into TV-MA-rated fare will forever tarnish its family-friendly crown

While many could argue that the addition of more mature content only benefits their growing market by also offering something for older parts of the family to enjoy the content. Who knows if they might add additional elements into allowing a more family-friendly setup for users of the streaming service, similar to Netflix’s Kids function. We’ll see how or even if Disney reacts to this statement at some point and how they might tackle the concerns.

  • ‘The Boys’ Spinoff Loses Aimee Carrero and Shane Paul McGhie

‘The Boys’ Spinoff Loses Aimee Carrero and Shane Paul McGhie

We’ve long waited for any information or update on the next spinoff for The Boys. While the animated Diabolical anthology series has just recently found its way to Amazon Prime, there’s been surprisingly little on the college-focused series that would adapt the comics’ parody of the X-Men. Cast members Aimee Carrero and Shane Paul McGhie have left the project.

Carrero has now joined another dark comedy titled The Consultant, where she’ll star opposite Christoph Waltz and soon will be seen in the upcoming Paramount+ series on the making of The Godfather. It’s unclear what project McGhie may have signed on after leaving the project or if he has at all, but one of the reasons mentioned on their departure is the long-production process.

That is not all, as while the series had all its characters cast, there were seemingly major changes happening behind the scenes that may have led to McGhie leaving the project. For now, both roles will be recast moving forward and we’ll see when they might finally pick up production and find replacements for the roles.

It’s been curious how long the project has dragged out up to this point, but it’s not uncommon. With most of the focus being on the third season of The Boys, the creative team might still be trying to find its place in the overall timeline, especially with whatever the consequences might be from the upcoming third season.

  • ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’: Kathleen Kennedy Hints at Talks for a Potential Season 2

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’: Kathleen Kennedy Hints at Talks for a Potential Season 2

After a long wait, we finally got the first trailer for the next Star Wars Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi. For quite some time, the project was described as a limited series but it seems that something may have changed at some point. Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy has hinted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that there have been talks for a potential Season 2 to further explore the character’s time before the events of A New Hope.

It’s certainly something we talk about… We’d have to really answer the question why?

    Kathleen Kennedy

There’s still some time until the series releases on Disney+, but if there are already talks now we’ll see if the story keeps the door open once it wraps up its episode count. The introduction of the Inquisitors into live-action does open up a lot of different storylines, and we might get some connective tissue between Obi-Wan Kenobi and his eventual return in Rebels to face off against Darth Maul for one last time. As we still have to wait until the end of May, we’ll have to wait for an official confirmation.
