  • James Gunn is an Executive Producer for Disney+s ‘I Am Groot’

James Gunn is an Executive Producer for Disney+s ‘I Am Groot’

It’s been quite some time since we got the announcement of an animated special focused on the popular Baby Groot introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We didn’t know much about the project but heard it might go for a photo-realistic style, which was confirmed during the teases during Disney+ Day. Now, Guardians director James Gunn was asked if he is involved with the series. He has now confirmed that he is an executive producer on the project.

It makes sense that he’s an executive producer on the project. Not only did he introduce the world to the loveable version of the character, but is also actively working on the next entry in the Guardians franchise. He’s also busy preparing a Holiday special that’ll likely release at the end of 2022 ahead of the third film’s release.

It’s very likely that I Am Groot is closer to what Disney+ has released with projects like Dug Days or Olaf Presents. Rather than an actual series, it’s more small vignettes that feature the little tree in hilarious situations. It may still end up being canon, as we bridge the gap between the post-credit sequence from the first film until they are on a mission for the Sovereign in the second part.

  • Robert Kirkman Not Involved With Disney+’s ‘Marvel Zombies

Robert Kirkman Not Involved With Disney+’s ‘Marvel Zombies

Marvel Studios unveiled a number of new projects during the recent, massive Disney+ Day event. One of these projects was Marvel Zombies, a brand new animated series based on the comics by Robert Kirkman. The reveal came as a surprise to many fans, and it would seem that Kirkman himself was among the crowd of people with no prior knowledge of the show. The Walking Dead and Invincible creator dropped the news in a response to fans on Twitter:

As mentioned by Kirkman, it’s likely the new series will spin out of the fan-favorite episode of What If…?’s first season as opposed to adapting his comics directly. Although, it still seems interesting that the writer is not involved in any consulting capacity. Especially considering elements from his run was used for the What If…? episode, like the zombified heroes being able to use their abilities and Black Panther losing a leg. It’s possible Kirkman’s busy schedule played a role in his lack of involvement with the series. The creative remains hard at work on another animated adaptation of his work, Amazon Prime’s Invincible, as well as his current comics and multiple live-action versions of his previous work.

The Marvel Zombies concept was first introduced in Mark Millar’s run on Ultimate Fantastic Four, as an alternate Earth plagued by a nasty zombie infestation. The idea then became its own series, penned by Kirkman and illustrated by Sean Phillips. The popularity of the comic led to multiple sequel mini-series, and eventually an adaptation for the MCU. Hopefully, the new series proves to be just as popular with fans.

  • Artist Chase Conley Joins ‘X-Men ‘97’ as an Episodic Director

Artist Chase Conley Joins ‘X-Men ‘97’ as an Episodic Director

The Marvel section of Disney’s much-hyped Disney+ Day event came with plenty of exciting first looks and project announcements. Perhaps one of the most surprising announcements was the revival of the 90s X-Men: The Animated Series. It now received the new title X-Men ‘97. Unfortunately, aside from revealing the series’ existence, not much was made known about the creative team behind the big comeback outside of the original voice cast is making a return to bring these characters back to life. Luckily for fans, an Instagram post from artist Chase Conley has confirmed at least one episodic director for the show.

Conley recently made waves in the comic book community when he unveiled a new redesign for Miles Morales. Before that, the graphic designer and storyboard artist worked on projects involving The Death of Superman, Teen Titans, and Black Dynamite. Two years ago, Conley posted a workshop image of the iconic X-Men character Storm to his page. Depending on how long he’s secretly been attached to X-Men ‘97, the artwork could be an indicator of the revival’s style, but we did get the classic designs in the Disney+ special. So, we’ll see how they approached the revival of this iconic series. At the very least, it shows Conley has been a passionate fan of these characters for some time.

  • ‘Harley Quinn’s Liza Singer Working on Animated ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’

‘Harley Quinn’s Liza Singer Working on Animated ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’

Back in September, we covered the announcement by Harley Quinn‘s Liza Singer that they had joined Marvel Studios in an unknown project. They had worked on a variety of 2D series including Disenchantment, DC Super Hero Girls, and Paramount+’s The Harper House. They also worked on their own Netflix series High in the Clouds. At the time, we didn’t know what other animation projects they had in development. Luckily, Disney+ Day changed all that and we learned about the new animated MCU prequel Spider-Man: Freshman Year. They confirmed their involvement on Twitter.

    https://twitter.com/LaserSinger/status/1459204266246082561

Jeff Trammel is tackling the project as executive producer. In his announcement tweet, Singer joined in and shared her excitement working with Trammell on the project. Freshman Year, as the name implies, takes place during the time that Peter Parker turned into the hero we’ve come to love throughout the last few films. It’s quite an interesting surprise, as technically Spider-Man still belongs to Sony. So, it may be the reason it’s an animated project that means they aren’t dependent on Sony’s approval. There’s no word if Tom Holland might be involved with the project, but he also didn’t return for What If…?, which might still be connected to the way his contract works.

  • DISNEY+ DAY: ‘She-Hulk’s Zeb Wells To Write Animated ‘Marvel Zombies’

DISNEY+ DAY: ‘She-Hulk’s Zeb Wells To Write Animated ‘Marvel Zombies’

It’s time to find out a little more about the Marvel Zombies animated series just announced at Disney Plus Day 2021. The announcement was followed with a bit more detail on Marvel.com about the creative team working on the streaming series. It seems, fresh off his roles in the writers’ room for She-Hulk, that Hellions comic writer Zeb Wells will not only write the show initially but also be an executive producer alongside What If…? director Bryan Andrews. The Marvel Zombies are somewhat of a breakout from appearing in Ultimate Fantastic Four to a short run of their own in the Ultimate line before appearing in various comic sequels and most recently the What If…? episode. Marvel Studios’ approach to having creative talent be amongst the team on one project before leading another seems to have born fruit again! With the Marvel Zombies featuring flesh-eating versions of our famous heroes, it’s sure to blend well with Wells’ morbid humor!

  • DISNEY+ DAY: First ‘Moon Knight’ Footage Teases Mr. Knight

DISNEY+ DAY: First ‘Moon Knight’ Footage Teases Mr. Knight

We finally got our first look at the Disney+ series introducing the world to Moon Knight. Oscar Isaac will play the iconic hero that fights with multiple personalities. So, he’s taken on different roles throughout his many runs but one has been a fan-favorite since they first appeared in Secret Avengers before gaining even more popularity in the Warren Ellis‘ 2014 run, Mr. Knight. His all-white suit was a visual standout and it seems that the new footage released on the upcoming series may have teased its appearance. In a brief sequence, we see Marc Spector on a bus and he’s wearing white gloves and what seems to be an all-white suit. So, he likely will become Mr. Knight at some point going by this image.

DISNEY+ DAY: First Look at Samuel L. Jackson’ Nick Fury in ‘Secret Invasion’

There have been quite a few goodies coming out in Disney+ Day, but the tease of Marvel Studios’ future had quite a few interesting hints at what is to come. Not only did we get our first tease of the Moon Knight costume and She-Hulk in action, but Secret Invasion also got some representation with a new logo and our first look at Samuel L. Jackson’s return as Nick Fury.

    Image

He certainly looks a bit more grizzled from the last time we saw him and it’s interesting that he has left his iconic eyepatch behind. Of course, given the title, this might be a Skrull in disguise as Fury. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait too long until we get more from this series and what it has to offer.

There have been quite a few theories about when we might expect the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. Originally, it was announced to release in 2021 but as time went by there was a noticeable lack of news, especially when Hawkeye took June. Rumors had it heading for a Summer 2022 release, which has finally been confirmed during Disney+ Day.

We also got a new look at the series with one moment teasing the also long-rumored new origin given to the character, as it’s uncertain if Ms. Marvel will remain an Inhuman in the MCU.
