What to Expect from the Future of Video Game Adaptations and When to Expect It

TBD: FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S

The indie game took the Internet by storm in 2014. The horror game saw you trapped in a pizzeria with sentient animatronics. Five Nights at Freddy’s that are out to kill you. It was going to be Scott Cawthon’s final game before leaving the industry, but its success led to seven sequels with one more confirmed for 2020. In 2015, Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights to adapt the franchise. Gil Kenan signed on to direct the film. In 2017, Cawthon revealed that the film was in development hell. Later that year, Blumhouse Productions has acquired the rights.

Gil Kenan left the project with Chris Columbus (Home AloneHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) attached as of 2017. Cawthon and Jason Blum will produce with Cawthon writing the script. The film got slated for a 2020 release, but the original script got scrapped.

In late November 2020, Scott Cawthon offered an update on the movie’s script, stating that the team had finally decided on the route the story would be taking. Whatever route was chosen it proved not to be the right one, at least in what concerns director Chris Columbus, as he left the project in late September 2021.
