At one point, the voice actor of the main character, Solid Snake, David Hayter, submitted a script that did not get accepted. The project finally gained some momentum in 2017.

Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts joined the production in 2017. Columbia Pictures is producing the film with Jay Basu attached as the screenplay writer. They have currently not cast anyone.
