What to Expect from the Future of Video Game Adaptations and When to Expect It

TBD: TOMB RAIDER 2

The Tomb Raider video game series goes back to 1996 when the first installment was released and became an instant success in the gaming community. Lara Croft entered the cultural zeitgeist at the end of the century, becoming a more recognizable name than most celebrities, and with the subsequent release of a few more games that helped maintain that status, 2001 saw the release of the first Tomb Raider movie adaptation. The movie took advantage of Croft’s name in a way not even the games had, by putting it in front of the game’s original title. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life received mostly negative reviews, which led to the cancellation of the planned threequel.

Ten years later, with the Tomb Raider brand somewhat withering, a decision was made that ended up bringing new life to the entire franchise, games and movies alike. It was decided that the game series was to get a reboot, giving Lara a new look and background story. The success of the latest Tomb Raider game alongside its 2015 sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, was a big reason why the new theatrical release went into development, this time with Alicia Vikander as the lead. As the more recent games, 2018’s Tomb Raider provided a more grounded version of Lara Croft, less whimsical and a bit rougher.

The movie had been met with mixed reviews, but by managing to break even, an eventual sequel remained a possibility. With Vikander still open to returning to the role, the project finally got greenlit in 2019 with Ben Wheatley set to direct.
