What to Expect from the Future of Video Game Adaptations and When to Expect It

APRIL 8, 2022: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2

Sonic the Hedgehog was a film in development for quite some time. Sega wanted to make their icon a movie star way back since 1993. It wasn’t until Paramount Pictures tackled the project in 2017 that it finally came together. The film went into production slated to release in November 2019, but the reaction to the initial Sonic design pushed Paramount to delay its release date by three months. As such, Sonic got redesigned to be more faithful to the games. Its success before the pandemic led to the sequel announcement in May.

Ben Schwartz, an avid fan of the video games, was hired to voice the blue blur with James Marsden joining as the human Tom Wachowski. Jim Carrey joined the film as the villainous Dr. Robotnik. Rounding out the main cast, Tika Sumpter played Tom’s wife.

Matt Fowler made his directorial debut with the 2020 release. The film’s script was penned by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller. The team behind the original will return for the sequel that s scheduled to be filming from the 15th March until 10th May 2021. The project’s release date and logo were disclosed in February 2021.

In late May 2021, further details regarding the plot of the movie were released, in what seems to be an extended synopsis of the project. Idris Elba was confirmed to be joining the cast playing Knuckles the Echidna, in August 2021.
